The place was packed, as guests to the exclusive event came to enjoy “a breather,” as the invitation said. The media organization’s partners, old and new, came to wish the Daily Tribune more success and long years ahead. Gratitude filled the air for all the triumphs and lessons of the past year, which culminated with a 170-page anniversary supplement. This was meaningfully put into words in a prayer that said, “We are grateful for the vision, commitment and steady leadership of our president, Willie Fernandez, and the dedication of our entire team to propel Daily Tribune to where it is today. “Bless every member of the Daily Tribune family with renewed strength and inspiration to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. Forgive us for any transgression committed as we carried out our tasks. “Fill our hearts with compassion for all that we’ve gone through and everything that we hope for.” Acoustic music by Ace Yabut entertained early arrivals before ace host Kevin Lapeña led everyone through quick review of how the Daily Tribune had grown through the past five years under the new management. Indeed, “crossing its second decade in the Philippine media industry was a turning point for Daily Tribune, as a global pandemic demanded a wider approach to delivering news and views to an ever-developing market of readers. The company took a challenge and soared with it — never stopping for a minute. This year, the Daily Tribune continued to grow its reach. From print alone in 2000 to print with online presence some years after that, Daily Tribune in 2018 beefed up its website and added social media channels like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The times called for a change in the way the company delivered its content, challenging it to step up its game. Daily Tribune led the way in developing content for Facebook and YouTube, creating different shows that expanded and synergized with stories in its print medium. Its tie-up with broadcast company RJ completed the circle to make it an Omnimedia company. Still, the print medium is not left behind. The newspaper is going from strength to strength — with anniversary issues getting thicker and thicker each year. Daily Tribune’s much-talked about tabloid Dyaryo Tirada is going from purely online to having print copies soon. From trending reels on Tiktok to Threads, and who knows what’s to come, Daily Tribune continues its journey to the peak! PBA expansion? Not right now says former Commissioner
The shocking news of the planned sale of the Blackwater franchise some weeks back triggered a number of topics in the PBA. For one, if the team were to be sold, who are the possible buyers? What new team, or teams, could we possibly see in the PBA? For two, the topic of expansion can also be tackled as Blackwater was one of the two teams that entered the PBA when the league last expanded from 10 to 12 teams in time for the 2014-2015 season. Can interested parties just buy a separate franchise in another PBA expansion? For former Commissioner Chito Salud, who was in charge of the league when Blackwater and Kia joined some six years ago, the PBA should refrain from adding any more teams for the time being. "Maybe the league needs more time, to make sure the additional teams garner enough clout and fans," Salud said on Power & Play hosted by fellow former PBA Commissioner Noli Eala. Blackwater, and Terra Firma (Kia), should have decent following, especially with some notable players in the respective lineups. However, both franchises have little on-court success since entering the league. Both are yet the advance in the semifinals in their minimal playoff appearances. "At this time, I think we have the perfect number [of teams]. Comm. Willie [Marcial] has the perfect conferences and format for these members," Salud added. Salud is not totally opposed to adding more teams, he did supervise the entry of two new ones after all. The prospect of expansion means that the PBA is doing great but the timing has to be right as well. "To have an expansion, that means the league is thriving. I don't see it right now," Salud said. "Anytime you have a party that's interested to come in, magandang senyales yan. But for this time, let's keep it as it is," he added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
PBA: COVID-19 presents toughest test for Commissioner Marcial
When Willie Marcial was promoted to become PBA Commissioner, the league was not in a good place. The PBA Board was divided into two separate factions following a rather controversial end to the tenure of Commissioner Chito Narvasa. Nevertheless, in less than three years, Commissioner Marcial has helped bridge the divide and restore some of the PBA's lost glory. Marcial has been so good that he's been rewarded with a fresh three-year term before his current deal expired. When his extension ends, Marcial would have the third longest stint for a Commissioner in the PBA. [Related: PBA: Willie Marcial gets 3-year extension as Commissioner] Before that happens though, Marcial has to deal with his toughest challenge on the job: the COVID-19 pandemic. "Mahirap, mahirap talaga," Marcial said on the recent Philippine Sportswriters Association forum as he deals with the pandemic. "Nataon sakin tumama ito, ang hirap paano gawin, paano kausapin yung task force, paano kausapin ang players, lahat," he added. The PBA has been shut down for over four months now due to the effects of COVID-19. Before the league stopped play last March 11, the 2020 Philippine Cup only managed one match. If the PBA never returns for this year, the whole 45th season would have gone to waste. As such, a restart is in the works, with return to practice pegged this week. Still, the pressure on Marcial as Commissioner will only rise when the PBA attempts to return while the pandemic is still ongoing. "Mas mahirap pag umandar na to, kasi kakabahan na ako kasi baka may mag-positive. Baka may mag-text sakin, yun pala trade lang o may tanong. Mas kakabahan ako eh," Marcial said. "Lahat ng sisi, pero sana wag naman, sakin. Pag nag-outbreak to, wala PBA, sakin tatama eh. Minsan talaga di ka makakatulog, lalo na pag nag-umpisa na," he added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
