Colombians in spotlight over Ecuador, Haiti assassinations
Two years after a Colombian squad allegedly shot dead the president of Haiti, authorities in Ecuador have accused a group of Colombians of being behind the assassination of a top presidential candidate, pointing to the export of a culture of political hit jobs. Colombia has a long history of politicians being assassinated by opponents, drug traffickers, or paramilitaries, and even its president, Gustavo Petro, campaigned before his election from behind a wall of bulletproof shields. After the shock assassination of Ecuador journalist and anti-corruption crusader Fernando Villavicencio on Wednesday, authorities released pictures of six Columbian suspects, one of them splattered with blood. A seventh suspect was killed in a shootout at the scene of the crime. The country's main newspaper, El Universo, reported Villavicencio was assassinated "hitman-style and with three shots to the head." Police said the suspects were arrested in a series of raids in which they also found a rifle, a machine gun, grenades, and ammunition. In a message of support to Ecuador, Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro drew a direct link to the murder of Haitian president Jovenel Moise in his home in July 2021 by a group of 17 Colombian mercenaries. "A gang of Colombian hitmen, mercenaries, went to Haiti to assassinate a president," he said during an official event. "These criminal gangs of hitmen are unfortunately taking this Colombian model of political assassinations outside of its borders." Jorge Mantilla, a Colombian investigator into organized crime, said that the arrests showed the "specialization among Colombian criminals in the use of violence" after six decades of armed conflict between the state and guerrillas, paramilitaries, and drug gangs. He said the two assassinations "show the capacity that these violence professionals have of connecting with transnational crime networks." Cross-border ties Villavicencio said last week he had received several threats from Los Choneros, one of Ecuador's most powerful criminal groups which the Insight Crime thinktank said became the armed wing of a Colombian drug cartel. It also has ties to Mexico's Sinaloa cartel. Late Friday Villavicencio was buried in Quito during a private ceremony after hundreds of people paid tribute at an exhibition center, where his coffin was draped with the flag and a symbolic presidential sash with the words "My power is in the constitution." While there has been no clear claim of responsibility, the murder has highlighted the once-peaceful nation's decline into a violent hotbed of drug trafficking and organized crime. Wedged between the major cocaine producers Colombia and Peru, Ecuador -- seen as having laxer controls -- has in recent years attracted foreign drug cartels that have linked up with local gangs to move drugs through the country to the United States and Europe. Mantilla explains that Ecuador's drug gangs "acquired their power from working with Colombian organizations and later became independent" and grew stronger. On Thursday, Ecuador's Interior Minister Juan Zapata referred to the detainees simply as "foreigners," saying they were "members of a criminal group" that assassinated Villavicencio in an "attempt to sabotage" snap presidential elections due on August 20. Colombian media said the suspects had criminal records in their home country, including for arms manufacturing and trafficking, drug trafficking, murder, or domestic violence. Colombia partly 'responsible' After the Haiti assassination, a US investigation revealed that two men at the head of a Miami security firm had devised a plan to kidnap Moise and replace him with a Haitian-American citizen. In March this year, dual Haitian-Chilean citizen Rodolphe Jaar pled guilty in the United States to housing the Colombian commando team and giving them weapons. That same month Colombia's president Petro said his country was partly responsible for Moise's assassination. "Colombia has a co-responsibility... it was Colombian mercenaries who went to kill the president of Haiti, unleashing a crisis even worse than the one they were already going through," he said. Petro has not commented on the Ecuador assassination. The post Colombians in spotlight over Ecuador, Haiti assassinations appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Sangalang to press charges vs accuser
Magnolia slotman Ian Sangalang is set to take appropriate legal actions against the Singaporean businessman who claimed that he was a central figure in a game-fixing incident during the 2018 Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup finals. Sangalang strongly denied knowing Koa Wei Quan, who is now facing 14 counts of graft charges in the State Courts in Singapore for influencing games played in the PBA and the Thailand Basketball League from April to July in 2018. In a report by Singapore-based The Straits Times over the weekend, Koa alleged that he offered Sangalang a bribe of $5,000 – or roughly P280,000 – just to influence the outcome of Game 5 of the title series between Magnolia and San Miguel. The Beermen won the game in double overtime, 108-99, to clinch the title. Sangalang met PBA commissioner Willie Marcial on Monday to personally deny any knowledge on Koa’s accusations. “It’s not true. I don’t even know him,” Sangalang, who is now mulling legal charges against the Singaporean businessman. “Hindi ko ipagpapalit ang career at dangal ko sa ganung bagay.” Marcial said he was convinced with Sangalang’s explanation and will support him in his bid to clear his name. “He doesn’t know anything in that issue and he will sue the person who dragged his name,” the PBA chief stressed. Court documents showed Koa, who used to own transportation firm Koa Motor, also worked with former PBA player Leo Avenido and a man identified as Sergei Bien Orillo in fixing the outcome of the Philippine Cup finals as well as games featuring Blackwater, Columbian Dyip and Phoenix Super LPG. Aside from the PBA, Koa admitted that he also ran his match-fixing racket in the TBL, where he influenced the game between Provincial Electricity Authority and Thai General Equipment through an offer made to Filipino guard Almond Vosotros. Vosotros now plays for TNT Tropang Giga in the PBA 3x3 event. Two other games in the TBL involving PEA against Mono Vampire and Hi-Tech Assumption Thonburi were also mentioned to have been influenced by Koa while he was in Singapore. He, however, did not specify if the players or teams he mentioned agreed to accept his bribes. Marcial said the league will continue to investigate the matter. CJ Perez happy to help out as driver-slash-model for wife s business
The year 2020 has actually been good to CJ Perez. Along with winning Rookie of the Year in the PBA, the top overall pick in the 2019 Draft officially tied the knot with now-wife Sienna and the newlyweds are expecting their second child. Aside from baby Tanisha and her soon-to-be sibling, though, the Perezes apparently have another baby that needs looking after. A month ago, CJ and Sienna opened an online store selling handmade crafts for the home - and of course, they had to name it after their firstborn. For the cornerstone of Terrafirma Dyip, he has no worries whatsoever about having a new business in the face of the continuing COVID-19 crisis. "Business partner ko asawa ko e so ang dali lang ng trabaho. Yung trust tsaka yung suporta ko, nasa kanya lang lagi," he said. He then continued, "Kung saan siya masaya, dun din ako. I-try lang namin 'to, malay natin, lumaki." Tanisha's specializes in rattan baskets, drawers, hampers, planters, organizers, racks, trays as well as pots made by locals in Nueva Ecija. One thing the startup has going for it is its driver-slash-model. "CJ is my driver, delivery guy, kargador, and model all at the same time," Sienna said, with a laugh. He then continued, "His positivity keeps me going. He believes in me so I promised myself I wouldn't let him down." Yes, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Gilas Pilipinas member CJ Perez may very well be seen bringing over their goods to Balintawak where delivery services would then be the ones to take them to clients. While the 6-foot-1 playmaker, for sure, is the main man in Tanisha's, just as important are the Nueva Ecija craftsmen who make it all possible. "We decided to go home to my province as we thought it would be safer. Once we were here, I started redecorating my bedroom and found myself fascinated with our local products," his wife shared. She then continued, "I asked a local craftsman if they can do the designs of baskets, organizers, wall decors, and hanging lamps I wanted and they did them. I fell in love with each of them and posted them on social media. It gained so much attention so I thought maybe I could make this my business." Deciding to push through with it once and for all was far from easy, of course. "I was hesitant at first. I asked him, 'What if walang bumili?'" Mrs. Perez narrated. She then continued, "But CJ was so supported. He told me na, 'It's okay. If nobody buys it, then it's not for us. We'll just try another business." And so, with funds from his first year in Columbian (now Terrafirma) as well as all his games for Gilas Pilipinas and winnings from individual awards, the Perezes launched Tanisha's. Just a month into its launch, the online store has nearly two thousand followers. And the newlyweds are nothing but hopeful that this is just the start for them in business. "For now, taga-support muna ako sa gusto ng asawa ko. Sana nga, magkaroon pa kami ng malaking business," the husband said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
No penalty but SBP tells Go and Thiry not to embarrass themselves after viral game
While they ultimately escaped PBA sanctions, Isaac Go and Thirdy Ravena didn't necessarily get off scot-free from their basketball game while Metro Manila is still under quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, a video on social media showed Go and Ravena, among others, engaging in a scrimmage at a gym in San Juan. Go, who is Columbian's top pick from the 2019 Gilas draft, escaped with just a verbal warning from PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial. The same pretty much goes for Thirdy, who is headed to Japan to play for San-en NeoPhoenix in the B.League. [Related: Thirdy Ravena signs with San-en NeoPhoenix in Japan’s B.League] Both players will likewise not any penalties from Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, but they were reminded by the SBP bosses not to embarrass themselves and the national basketball federation by violating government-mandated health protocols. Not only are they both Gilas prospects, both Go and Thirdy are widely seen as key pillars for the national team's future. "Wala kaming iniisip na penalty o fine," SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios said about Go and Thirdy during the recent Philippine Sportswriters Association forum. "Definitely napag-sabihan sila ni President Panlilio at ni sir Butch [Antonio] na itigil na yung ginagawa niyong hindi ayon sa regulasyon. Nakakahiya tayo," Barrios added. Aside from Go and Thiry, Ginebra star Japeth Aguilar and Rain or Shine rookie Adrian Wong were also seen on video playing in the said viral game. [Related: PBA: Japeth, Wong fined P20,000 for viral basketball game under quarantine] Aguilar and Wong have been fined P20,000 each by the PBA Monday and will be subject to 30 hours of community service. The pair are also directed to undergo swab testing for COVID-19 before and after a required 14-day quarantine period. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
