Elite face biggest Philippine Cup test against Ginebra

If Blackwater is truly serious about being a true PBA contender, then passing a crucial test Friday is going to be big for the Elite. Fresh from winning their fifth game last week, their most in one conference and only two short of their entire total last season, the Elite battle Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel with a chance to go for a top 2 finish on the line. With one playoff bonus still up for grabs, a win by Blackwater certainly gives the Ever Bilena franchise an inside track especially since eight teams basically remain in contention to join defending champion San Miguel Beer at the top. Being one of those eight teams, the Gin Kings would like to further their own campaign by notching what would be their first winning streak for the season. Through eight games so far, the reigning Governors' Cup champions have stumbled to an even 4-4 mark but the team is coming off a huge win over rival Meralco back in Iloilo City. Gametime is set at 7:00 p.m. from the Cuneta Astrodome. Also one of the eight teams in contention for a top 2 spot, Rain or Shine takes on a free-falling Meralco Bolts in the first game at 4:15 p.m., looking to bounce back from a sorry loss at the hands of the Beermen. Armed with a 5-3 record, the Elasto Painters are out to make sure they maintain solo second place for at least a day while the Bolts simply want to arrest a six-game slide. The Bolts are currently tied for last place with a woeful 2-7 card. .....»»

Durant dazzles against former Thunder team anew

em>By Janie McCauley, Associated Press /em> OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Kevin Durant dazzled against his old team once again with a season-best 40 points, and the Golden State Warriors beat Oklahoma City 121-100 on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time) despite Russell Westbrook's 21st triple-double for the Thunder. Westbrook had 27 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists in an improved showing from his 20-point outing on 4-for-15 shooting when OKC first faced Durant in the other jersey here 2.5 months ago and watched him dismantle the Thunder from every which way. In his two games against OKC, Durant has scored 79 points on 28-for-50 shooting. He hit seven three-pointers in the first meeting, a 122-96 Warriors rout Nov. 3 (Nov. 4 PHL time), also at Oracle Arena. Durant also had 12 rebounds Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time). Stephen Curry added 24 points and eight assists, and Klay Thompson had 14 points after he arrived back in the Bay Area just in time to play after a short absence dealing with a personal family matter. This one had tension, which just might be the norm from here on out when Durant faces the Thunder. There were words exchanged and stare downs, and of course a few hard fouls -- then an occasional smile to balance things out, like when Durant missed on a driving tomahawk jam and the ball shot back to midcourt. This atmosphere wasn't that much different from two days earlier when the champion Cavaliers visited Golden State's home floor and left with an embarrassing 126-91 defeat. Enes Kanter added 22 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Thunder, who missed center Steven Adams for a second straight game with a concussion. Tied at 63 after the game was also even at halftime, the Warriors scored eight unanswered points with three’s by Thompson and Durant. Thompson scored five straight points during the exact kind of scoring flurry Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan described before the game as what makes these star-studded Warriors so dangerous. It wasn't that long ago Donovan could only watch as Golden State rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat OKC in the Western Conference finals last season. Westbrook shot just 8-for-23 this time and missed all but one of his six three-point tries, but made 10-of-11 free throws. With 4.4 seconds left in the first half, Zaza Pachulia collided with Westbrook and clobbered the OKC star in the face as the Warriors center went with his man as Kanter set a screen on Andre Iguodala. Westbrook went down and grabbed his face in obvious pain and Pachulia glared at Westbrook as he stood over him. The play went to official review before Pachulia received a flagrant 1 foul, drawing boos from the sellout crowd. Golden State outscored Oklahoma City 37-22 in the third to turn the game into another blowout on the way to wrapping up 9-1 stay in Northern California over the past 3.5 weeks. Durant posted his 11th game with 30 or more points and fifth with at least 30 points and 10 boards. As dominant as KD has been against the Thunder, the Warriors still must go to Oklahoma City on Feb. 11 and March 20 (Feb. 12 and Mar. 21, PHL time). strong>TIP-INS /strong> em> strong>Thunder: /strong> /em> Oklahoma City is 5-11 on the road against Golden State and hasn't won on the Warriors' home floor since Dec. 18, 2014. Beermen clinch playoff bonus on their day off

As proof of their dominance so far in the Philippine cup, two-time defending champion San Miguel Beermen clinched a twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs despite doing nothing Sunday. Following their seventh straight win just two days before to improve to a league-best 8-1, there was still a slight chance that the Beermen would actually fail to finish in the top two. But with both Alaska and TNT losing their respective games Sunday at the Big Dome, there's no doubt now about San Miguel heading to the playoffs to defend its title with some perks. Head statistician Fidel Mangonon III confirmed that the champs got the first of the two twice-to-beat advantages in the quarterfinals. As for the rest of the field, eight teams are currently separated by one game in the standings. Globalport and Rain or Shine currently share second place with identical 5-3 cards while Blackwater sits alone at fourth with a 5-4 record. TNT, Star, Ginebra, Phoenix, and Alaska are all stuck in the middle at 4-4 while Mahindra, NLEX, and Meralco complete the list with two wins each. Only eight teams advance in the Philippine Cup with the top-2 seeds earning a twice-to-beat advantage. Teams ranked 3rd-6th figure in a best-of-3 series and all ties are to be broken by the quotient system.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8 .....»»

Struggling Ginebra and Meralco battle in Iloilo City

PBA conferences sure aren't created equal. The first meeting of Ginebra and Meralco since their epic Governors' Cup Finals showdown should be epic but instead, with both teams struggling in the All-Filipino, the anticipation is tamed. Nevertheless, both squads should deliver a show in Iloilo City Saturday as the Gin Kings and the Bolts fight for their respective playoff lives in the 2017 Philippine Cup. Meralco is in a worse situation currently as a five-game losing skid, tied for the longest this conference, has crippled a once promising campaign for the Bolts. As it stands, Meralco sits at the bottom of the standings and the Bolts' climb to one of the lower playoff seeds starts agains their recent Finals tormentor. Speaking of said Finals tormentor, Ginebra hasn't fared that much better with the Gin Kings still struggling with an up-and-down conference after winning their first title in eight years. Ginebra has been stuck in the middle of the pack so far, failing to establish a winning streak halfway through and is just barely surviving with a 3-4 card. .....»»

Ginebra struggling with life without Justin Brownlee

Safe to say, Brgy. Ginebra is missing a familiar figure in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup. A familiar figure that wears jersey no. 32 and goes by the name Justin Brownlee. Struggling to put together a winning streak in the All-Filipino after winning their first championship in eight years during the Governors' Cup, the Gin Kings are longing for their prolific import as they consistently stay inconsistent in the new PBA season. 'Maraming adjustments kasi unang-una, dati si Justin [Brownlee] nandun para sa amin,' Scottie Thompson said after Ginebra lost to San Miguel, dropping its record to 3-4. 'Ngayon wala na si Justin so kailangan namin mag-take over. Siguro yun yung medyo magulo sa team ngayon, yung role namin sa isa't-isa,' he added addressing the locals. Still below .500 with only four games left in the regular season, confidence hasn't left the Ginebra side entirely. Especially with the way they played the champs Sunday night, holding them down to only 72 points and marking three-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo to single digits. 'Actually, si coach Tim [Cone], sabi niya sa amin kung ganito lang lagi lalaruin namin, siguro darating din ang mga panalo. Okay naman siya, siguro kailangan lang namin yung finish sa bandang huli,' Thompson said.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8 .....»»
