PBA: Brownlee, Ginebra turn lights off on Meralco anew

Justin Brownlee continues to be a thorn on the side of Meralco, even now in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Stuffing the stat sheet with 36 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and three steals, Brownlee led Ginebra’s super surge in the third quarter to run away from the Bolts, 104-90, on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum. Just like he has been in the last two Finals of the Governor’s Cup, the Gin Kings’ American reinforcement was an unsolvable riddle for Meralco. He definitely wasn’t working alone, though, as the crowd darlings had five different players contributing in an 18-2 run bridging the second and third quarters that increased a one-point lead to a 71-56 advantage. “We were able to come out and throw our punch in the third quarter,” a much more gleeful than usual head coach Tim Cone said. Of course, the Bolts didn’t quit and back-to-back threes from Baser Amer and Chris Newsome pulled them to just within 81-87 inside the last five minutes. Yet again, however, Brownlee had the answer for Ginebra and his assist to an LA Tenorio triple followed by a dunk from a Tenorio dish re-established a 92-81 edge for them. “It really came down to that LA shot in the corner. We were on our heels until that big shot,” Cone said. That double-digit lead would stay the rest of the way, cementing the crowd darlings’ sweep of the best-of-three quarterfinals against Meralco. In the end, Tenorio had 11 points and five assists to his name while Greg Slaughter also added a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double. The Gin Kings now await the winner in the do-or-die matchup between Rain or Shine and Globalport on Thursday. For the Bolts, Arinze Onuaku was atop the scoring column with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Newsome and Amer chipped in 17 and 11 points, respectively, in the losing effort. BOX SCORES GINEBRA 104 – Brownlee 36, Slaughter 14, Tenorio 11, Aguilar 10, Mercado 9, Devance 8, Thompson 4, Ferrer 2, Caguioa 2, Mariano 0, Manuel 0. PBA: LA being LA is reason why Ginebra is in the semis

Already having figured in two Finals series that went the full seven-game distance, Ginebra and Meralco were once again pitted against one another in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Quarterfinals. The Bolts registered a record of 7-4 in the elimination round and claimed the fourth-seed while the Gin Kings weren’t that far behind with a 6-5 standing and clinched the fifth-seed. Safe to say, just like their meetings in the last two championship rounds of the Governor’s Cup, not much separated the two teams. Ginebra floor leader LA Tenorio had to admit as much. “Talagang we expected that this series is not going to be easy especially against Meralco,” he told reporters on Wednesday. Indeed, Tenorio and company lost an 18-point lead early in the final frame and saw their new-age rivals come as close as 81-87 inside the last five minutes of the second game of their best-of-three quarterfinals series. Justin Brownlee and Tenorio connived for the answer for the crowd darlings, though, as Brownlee’s assist to a Tenorio triple followed by a Tenorio dish to a Brownlee dunk re-established the double-digit lead they would protect for the remainder of the game. “When they were making that run, LA made the shot in the corner for three and got the steal to toss it back to Justin for the dunk,” a much more gleeful than usual head coach Tim Cone said post-game. “That was the game for me.” That is exactly why, for the nth time, the multi-titled mentor had nothing but high praise for his court general. “(That’s) LA just being LA. He’s such a big moment guy and that was a big moment shot,” he said. For his part, though, Tenorio said he was just doing his job. As he put it, “Siguro, pamatay-sunog lang talaga after their big run. Sa akin, sana nga ‘di na umabot sa ganun e.” He then continued, “Pero actually, to be honest, during the game, ‘di ako kumportable e kasi alam kong babalik sila. They did.” Yes, the Bolts did battle back, but at the same time, Tenorio was there to meet them and turn them back. And in the end, the Gin Kings swept the series up against their new-day rivals. The player who made it happen is only hoping that, unlike their previous conquests of Meralco, this is not yet the end for Ginebra. “We still have best-of-five semis na lalaruin and hopefully, we still have Finals to play. Hopefully, ang peak talaga namin is more pa,” he shared. He then continued, “Medyo nagka-climb pa kami (ngayon) ang hopefully, makuha namin in the right timing.” --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Brownlee on Ginebra slump: ‘We have to play with sense of urgency’

Barangay Ginebra's 1-4 hole in the PBA Commissioner's Cup isn't exactly the stuff myths are made of. Brownlee, who won two Governors' Cups with the Gin Kings, thinks it's time for Ginebra push the panic button if it wants to turn its season around. "We got to be urgent about it, we can't be lackadaisical," said Brownlee Friday at Mall of Asia Arena. Gin Kings ride big fourth-quarter run to go up 2-0 against Bolts

For the second straight game, it was a big fourth-quarter run that served as the difference for the barangay. Defending champion Bgry. Ginebra flipped the switch in the last six minutes of Game 2 to take a 86-76 win over Meralco in the 2017 Governors Cup Finals Sunday at the Big Dome. The champs, after another strong performance, are now up 2-0 in the best-of-7 series. Down 69-75 with 5:56 to go, the Gin Kings went on a 17-1 closing run to sink the Bolts anew and are halfway there for back-to-back titles. Holding on to a 79-76 lead, LA Tenorio hit a booming three with 1:08 remaining for a six-point advantage. Tenorio then forced a steal on Baser Amer on the other end and buried the insurance free throws as the barangay extended its Finals streak over Meralco to five games dating back to last year. Before Tenorio s dagger three though, the Bolts had the chance to tie but Ranidel De Ocampo and Jared Dillinger missed three of four free throws in one play. Dillinger, in particular, muffed two charities after he drew a loose ball foul on Japeth Aguilar following RDO s earlier split from the charity stripe. 'We took a big punch from them early in the game and kind of survived that and we were able to kind of make it into a possession by possession game,' head coach Tim Cone said. 'Seeing that the opportunity was there for us to win that game. It was a struggle. They’re a tough mental team. They’re mentally very tough. They’re hard to crack. But I’m just truly happy with our guys, just hanging in there, hanging in there, battling and battling and finding a way,' he added. Game 2 was a far cry from Game 1 mainly because the Bolts didn t took one whole half before showing up. Both teams were engaged from the get-go but it appeared that Meralco had things under control following a huge effort in the third behind import Allen Durham. However, Ginebra would complete shut down the Bolts as Tenorio and Justin Brownlee finally got it going and the Gin Kings ended up outscoring Meralco by 15 in the fourth. Tenorio and Brownlee on their own beat the Bolts in the payoff period, 18-14. Brownlee finished with only 19 points but eight came in the fourth. He also had 13 rebounds and seven assists. Tenorio dropped 10 of his 14 points in the final 12 minutes while Japeth Aguilar, despite five fouls, came through for 16. Back-to-back Best Import Allen Durham once again carried Meralco with 25 points, 22 rebounds, and seven assists but his local support remains lacking as De Ocampo and Baser Amer were the only other Bolts to crack double figures with 10 points apiece. Game 3 will be on Wednesday also at the Big Dome   The Scores:  GINEBRA 86 - Brownlee 19, Aguilar 16, Tenorio 14, Devance 10, Thompson 9, Mercado 6, Caguioa 6, Ferrer 3, Slaughter 3. MERALCO 76 - Durham 25, Amer 10, De Ocampo 10, Hodge 9, Newsome 8, Lanete 6, Dillinger 5, Tolomia 3, Caram 0, Hugnatan 0. PBA: Gin Kings destroy no. 1 ROS to start semis

There's still no stopping Ginebra. The Gin Kings rolled past no. 1 Rain or Shine Sunday to start their 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup semifinals series, scoring a nice 102-89 victory at the Big Dome. With Jeff Chan firing at will in the fourth, Ginebra finally pulled away to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series. The win was also the eighth straight for the Gin Kings dating back to the elimination round where they had to climb out of a 1-5 hole to make the playoffs as the no. 5 seed. Ginebra got off to a fast start, firing a 22-7 run right out of the gate. Rain or Shine settled down after that initial storm from the Gin Kings, keeping things close until the fourth. However, led by Chan's 10 points in the final 12 minutes, Ginebra managed to break the game wide open again by firing a 16-0 blast to take its largest lead of the night at 24 points, 102-78. "Best part about doing this game tonight was being able to do it without Japeth. He's been out of practice since our last game against Meralco, he got hit in his Achilles so he had some significant swelling in his Achilles tendon area," head coach Tim Cone said. "We don't know exactly how long he'll be out, we're hoping he can suit up in Game 2, but we didn't want to risk him tonight with that swelling. He had an MRI, and the initial reading was a slight tear but after review it was swelling. We're being very cautious. We want to make sure he plays in this series. And also he's a national team player, so we don't want to mess with a national team player as well," he added. Import Justin Brownlee was his usual brilliant self to lead the Gin Kings, scoring 35 points on top of 14 rebounds and nine assists. Chan finished with 21 points for his best game for Ginebra so far while Greg Slaughter added another 20 points in a starting role. For ROS, Reggie Johnson carried the Elasto Painters with 30 points and 13 boards while James Yap scored 15 and had eight rebounds. Game 2 is set for Tuesday also at the Big Dome.   The Scores:  Ginebra (102): Brownlee 35, Chan 21, Slaughter 20, Devance 12, Tenorio 5, Thompson 4, Mercado 3, Aguilar 2, Caperal 0, Manuel 0, Ferrer 0, Mariano 0 Rain or Shine (89): Johnson 30, Yap 15, Daquioag 10, Tiu 7, Washington 6, Ponferada 6, Ahanmisi 6, Belga 4, Nambatac 3, Norwood 2, Almazan 0 Quarterscores: 31-27, 52-45, 76-60, 102-89   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
