The 19th Asian Games have yet to start, but Gilas Pilipinas is already winning the hearts and minds of Filipinos. Gilas coach Tim Cone swept local fans off their feet when he allowed them to watch their joint training session with the Gilas Women team last Thursday at the PhilSports Arena. After their workout, San Miguel Corporation director Alfrancis Chua gave the fans five minutes to have their pictures taken with their basketball idols. But when Cone approached Chua, he suddenly changed his mind and increased the allotted time to 15 minutes. Seeing Gilas — a collection of the country’s most popular and wealthiest athletes — go out of their way to mingle with fans is truly heartwarming. And it won’t be the last time they will see their basketball heroes as Cone has invited them anew to watch their friendly match against Changwon LG Sakers on Friday. But just a few weeks ago, this beautiful bond between Gilas and their fans was unthinkable. Gilas struggled to gain public support during the country’s hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup. At the same time, their head coach, Chot Reyes, was being bashed and heckled mercilessly due to their forgettable performance. Fans questioned Reyes’s integrity as a coach, especially when he benched Kai Sotto in their first game against the Dominican Republic. He was also criticized for relying too much on National Basketball Association star Jordan Clarkson, raising speculations that he was unprepared for the world’s biggest and most prestigious basketball event. The fans inside the Smart Araneta Coliseum made their presence felt. They booed Reyes during the player introductions against Italy, prompting some of his players, like Kiefer Ravena, Rhenz Abando and Clarkson, to rush to his defense. Even Reyes’s outfit didn’t escape the eyes of the public. Social media exploded with insults, adverse reactions, and comments after Reyes flaunted an ultra-expensive Thom Browne suit during their game against Angola. The money he spent, reportedly around P200,000, wasn’t worth it as Gilas suffered a 70-80 loss to the Angolans, dealing a major blow to their chances of advancing to the knockout stages. But his manner of coaching and posh outfit were not the only reasons Reyes struggled to deodorize his public image. When Gilas was preparing for the World Cup, Reyes shut the doors of their practice facility to fans and sportswriters. Instead of making the team available, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas assigned a media liaison who disseminated information and narrated what was happening through short videos and photos regularly posted on social media. That was the practice when Gilas trained at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, as well as when they were in Estonia and Lithuania. Gilas also played friendly matches against Ivory Coast, Mexico, and Montenegro at the PhilSports Arena with no one but a very few team staffers and federation officials in attendance. With the friendly matches being inaccessible, sportswriters had to resort to checking the social media pages of Gilas’s opponents and the SBP to get information and avoid the wrath of their editors. They jokingly called it “socmed journalism.” That’s why the appointment of Cone as Gilas’ head coach is a breath of fresh air. The 65-year-old Cone may be an American, but he knows the importance of gaining public approval. In fact, he started his career as a villain in the eyes of the masses after engaging with the charismatic Robert Jaworski in numerous coaching battles. But he let his coaching do the talking as he led Alaska to a grand slam in 1996 before winning another triple crown with San Mig Coffee in 2014. At Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, the most popular professional team in the country, Cone further cemented his reputation as a well-loved, well-respected coach when he turned the likes of LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar, Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee into fan favorites. Now, Cone is at the helm of Gilas Pilipinas, armed with a mission of not only winning an Asian Games medal but also bringing the national players closer to the public. It’s a tough order. But Cone is carrying it out to perfection. The post Our team appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Manila Council marks 122nd year
The Manila City Council celebrated its 122nd anniversary last Monday, highlighting the bestowing of awards to former and current members for their outstanding performance, dedication and colorful careers. Leading the awardees was Manila City Administrator Bernardito Ang, who had served as Manila Third District Councilor for the longest period of time — totaling seven terms or an equivalent of 25 years. He has also held the position of Secretary to the Vice Mayor before becoming Secretary to the Mayor during the administration of erstwhile Mayor Isko Moreno and is now the City Administrator under the rein of Mayor Honey Lacuna. Ang is known for his many achievements, among them, for having authored the Local Tax Code of Manila and principally authoring the city ordinance that created the then City College of Manila, now known as Universidad de Manila. In his speech, Vice Mayor Yul Servo expressed gratitude to his mentors and made special mention of Ang, Lacuna, Moreno, and former Vice Mayor Danilo Lacuna for helping him in his political career. Former Vice Mayor Danilo Lacuna, father of Mayor Honey, received the “Dangal ng Konseho Award” in recognition of his decades of selfless service both as member and Presiding Officer of the MCC and for his “compassionate leadership that steered the city council to greater heights, producing measures that redounded to the benefit of a great number of Manilenos and his exemplary performance worthy of emulation by future generation of public servants.” His children, Councilors Dr. Lei Lacuna and Philip and zoning chief Dennis, received the award in behalf of their father. Meantime, Representatives Ernesto Dionisio, Jr., Rolando Valeriano, Joel R. Chua, Edward V.P. Maceda, Irwin Tieng, and Bienvenido Abante, Jr., each received an award as “Distinguished Legislator of Manila” for serving the MCC with utmost distinction when they were Councilors, leading to their election to the House of Representatives where they continue to bring pride and honor to the city. The event was held at the Ayuntamiento de Manila located in the historic Intramuros and the seat of the Manila City Council during the Spanish era. Following its destruction during World War II, it was reconstructed and the building now houses the offices of the Bureau of the Treasury. Kathryna Yu-Pimentel’s success recipes: ‘Good partners, location, products, service’
There are no shortcuts to success, says entrepreneur Kathryna Yu-Pimentel. At the start of her career, the self-taught culinary artist was pushed into the extremes while running her now-defunct food services. Humbled by the lessons she’s learned from her initial ventures, she has moved on to team up with other partners for her current businesses and has been reaping in it with the Singaporean casual dining restaurant chain Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice and Alpina Lounge and Wellness. Entrepreneurship came naturally to Kathryna who started earning money in her elementary and high school days by making and selling polvoron and cookies. In college, she supplied 500 packed cookies a week to a classmate who owned a coffee cart in the school. After graduation, they became suppliers to lobby coffee shops and school canteens. Likewise, she ran her own catering business and an Italian restaurant. Shifted careers Kathryna shifted careers when she worked at the law firm of her future husband Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and at the Senate office upon his election. Six years ago, she came upon Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice restaurant while on a trip to Singapore. Its long name distinguishes itself from Tiong Bahru, Singapore’s oldest neighborhood and tourist destination. Located in the hawkers’ area, the restaurant attracted long queues of office workers. The come-on was the bite-size pieces of succulent Hainanese chicken on fragrant turmeric rice with ginger, chili and hoisin sauces. “It was a hearty meal yet you didn’t feel the guilt because the chicken was not fried,” says Kathryna. Chicken rice Whenever she visited in Singapore, she kept returning to Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice. In 2019, Kathryna and several partners, including the Singaporean owner established the local corporation, Tiong Bahru Philippines, which aims owns and manage its restaurants here. The restaurant opened at MET Live Mall in Pasay City followed by a branch at Easton Place in Makati. Lockdowns notwithstanding, the businesses flourished with its healthy offerings and efficient delivery. The famous chicken rice dish clicked because it offered top quality and value for money for less than P300 for a solo serving. Some customers kept ordering daily. Post-pandemic, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice now has seven outlets in the metropolis. The flagship restaurant was recently inaugurated at the Eastwood Mall. The eighth branch is slated to open at the Greenhills Shopping Center later in the year. Aside from the poached and roasted chickens, with their tender and juicy meat, the restaurant chain is also known for its tofu appetizer with sweet chili sauce, the sausage-like kikiam Singapore, and the beef and fish head curries. Cooked on-site A major advantage is that the food is cooked on-site to guarantee freshness. Before each restaurant opening, the Singaporean principal, Andrew Koh, trains the kitchen staff to ensure authenticity in taste. Customers seek fresh taste and healthy meals at pocket-friendly prices. Kathryna attributes Tiong Bahru’s success to her harmonious relationship with her partners. The investors, who come from diverse fields, offer their expertise. Kathryna and two other partners are foodies who conduct taste tests and visit the different branches to check consistency in quality. She adds that the location in malls and high-traffic areas help bring in customers. Meanwhile, Alpina Lounge and Wellness, a nail and brow salon cum spa, at Uptown Parade in Taguig City has been thriving. Kathryna is joined by her sister, Stephanie Yu Chua and Russian brow expert Maria Zhukova, as managing partners in this business. Aside from offering minimally invasive services, specialized blood tests and massages, Alpina doubles as a party place at night. Business is flourishing because it uses top quality machines and products executed by professionals who follow international standards in nail art, semi-permanent makeup and aesthetic procedures. Kathryna says her earlier ventures taught her to be resilient. Maturity, location and timing are important to success. Learning from her lessons, she follows the classic recipe for success, that is: “Good partners, good location, good products and good service.” The post Kathryna Yu-Pimentel’s success recipes: ‘Good partners, location, products, service’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

PBA dreams within reach at Letran, says ex-UST Tiger Rhenz Abando
RHENZ ABANDO (UAAP image) Rhenz Abando says that his transfer to defending NCAA champion Letran from embattled University of Santo Tomas is more than just a school-to-school move, but one that would likely benefit his career in the long run because of the opportunities he thinks he would get with the Knights. Abando – one of three former UST players who changed address from España to Intramuros – met Tuesday with Knights mentor Bonnie Tan and Alfrancis Chua, sports director of San Miguel Miguel Corporation, which backs the school’s basketball program. “May mga opportunities kasi sa Letran, mga coaches nila nasa PBA na din,” says Abando, referring to Tan – team manager of GlobalPort – and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel guard LA Tenorio, who is part of Letran’s coaching staff, in an interview Wednesday with Manila Bulletin. “Magiging malaking tulong sa improvement ko as a player, siempre goal ko is makatuntong din sa PBA. Saka ang Letran Dominican school din naman kaya mas pinili ko na doon lumipat.” Aside from Tan and Tenorio, there’s also Chua, who coached PBL Grand Slam champion Stag in the mid-90s and the PBA teams of Tanduay, Sta. Lucia Realty and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, also represents SMC, which owns Ginebra, Magnolia Hotshots and San Miguel Beer in the pros, and volleyball team Petron Blaze in the PSL. Chua, in an interview Tuesday, said that Letran players are well taken care of by SMC similar to what they do with professional athletes, exactly what was assured Abando, Brent Paraiso and Ira Bataller. “Siguro naniniwala sila sa system ng Letran at sa pag-aalaga ng San Miguel sa players. Alam nila kung paano kami magpatakbo ng team,” said Chua, also the governor of Ginebra in the PBA board. “Hindi sila nagkamali sa pagpili sa Letran, kasi kung paano kami mag-alaga ng players sa professional, ganun din sa collegiate level. Malaking karagdagan sila sa team, siguro mas sasaya ang mga ka-Arriba natin.” Abando begged off to comment when asked the other schools that sought his services, although sources said Letran’s arch nemesis San Beda University, as well as De La Salle University, tried to recruit the La Union native. He, however, may have indirectly answered questions of offers from a UAAP school when he said he doesn’t want to play in the same league where his former alma mater is a member. “Ayoko na din kasi maglaro sa UAAP dahil ayoko din makalaban ang UST,” said Abando. “Baka kasi kapag madinig ko yung “GO USTe” baka play ng UST gawin ko or depensahan ko mga kakampi ko. Kaya din mas pinili ko ang NCAA kesa sa UAAP ako maglaro,” Abando added in jest. The decision to leave UST was not an easy thing to do, according to Abando, but he thanked his mother Lorena for the guidance, saying: “Mother ko yung tumulong sa akin… hindi madali e.” Abando, Paraiso and Bataller need to serve one-year residency as per NCAA guidelines for transferees. After that, both Abando and Paraiso have two years to play while Bataller has three more. Although the addition of the 6-foot-5 Bataller and the 6-foot-2 Paraiso are considered important for the Knights, it was the recruitment of the 6-foot-4 Abando that really made the difference. After two seasons with the Philippine College Science and Technology in Calasiao, Pangasinan, Abando transferred to UST in 2019 and played one season – the 82nd UAAP where he helped the Tigers reach the final against eventual champion Ateneo Blue Eagles. i.....»»
Psychological tests help Calvin Abueva as he moves on from 'worst' part of career
Calvin Abueva is moving on. 2019 was not kind to Calvin Abueva at the slightest, as multiple incidents on and off the court turned his life and career upside down. Currently still suspended by the PBA, Abueva calls the past year as easily the worst of his career. "Totally mental block ako noong panahon na yun," Abueva told former PBA Commissioner Nolie Eala on Power & Play. "Di ko rin masabi sa sarili ko kung bakit ko ginawa yun. First time nangyari sa buong career ko yun, yun ang gulo na pinaka-malala, pinaka-worst," he added. After leading the Phoenix Fuel Masters to the no. 1 seed and a breakthrough semifinals in the Philippine Cup, Abueva's 2019 took a turn for worse in the team's opening weekend in the Commissioner's Cup. First, Calvin was caught on camera making lewd gestures towards the girlfriend of then Blackwater rookie Ray Parks late in a game Phoenix already wrapped up. Second, Abueva clotheslined TNT import Terrence Jones in a heated game that the KaTropa ended up winning in a blowout. The KaTropa game was the last appearance on the court for Calvin so far as total of P90,000 from the PBA and his own team, an indefinite suspension followed. It didn't help that marital problems soon struck Calvin as well though thankfully, he and his wife Sam have since made up and their relationship looks to be stronger than ever in 2020. In the midst of all this, Abueva has found solace in his psychological sessions. The sessions are mandatory for his PBA reinstatement but he plans to continue taking them on his own even after his suspension is lifted. "Laking tulong sakin yung psychology, the best part sa life mo. Kailangan mo rin makilala yung sarili mo," Abueva said. "Ako sa sarili ko, I want to go back kasi mas magiging peaceful ako na male-learn ko kung ano yung mga dapat ko rin makita sa ugali ko at sa katayuan ko," he added. In experiencing the worst, Calvin learned the value of taking cafe of your own mental health. As he moves on to possibly greener pastures, Abueva hopes to also showcase on new and better version of himself. "Hindi ko na po tino-throwback lahat ng nangyari sakin. Fino-forward ko kung paano ko sila makakalimutan at kung paano ko male-learn yung lesson ko," he said. "Ang sakin, gusto ko mapakita yung ako, hindi lang sa basketball, maski yung sa likod ng backboard na Calvin Abueva," the Beast added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Beast and Baby Beast together in Coach Topex s NCAA First 5
Topex Robinson has been calling the shots for Lyceum of the Philippines University from 2015 to present. Before this, the always amiable mentor was at the helm for San Sebastian College-Recoletos from 2011 to 2014. Through all of that, he has had a hand in the discovery and the development of young talent for his teams as well as the game planning for the opposing rising stars. Among all of those, who are the best of the best for him? Here is Topex Robinson's NCAA First 5, as he told ABS-CBN Sports: CJ PEREZ One phone call - one phone call was all it took for the tides to turn in favor of LPU. When Perez was looking to leave the nest of Ateneo de Manila University, he called one person and one person only - Coach Topex, who discovered and then developed him back in San Sebastian. The rest, as they say, is history as in the first year of their reunion, the 6-foot-2 guard was hailed as MVP all while the Pirates sailed to a historic Finals. CALVIN ABUEVA "The Beast" continued to be unleashed under the watchful eye of coach Topex. Already a force under then-coaches Ato Agustin and Turo Valenzona, Abueva stayed Abueva even as he did not replicate his MVP win in Season 87. And up until now, there is still no end-to-end force quite like one-third of the "Pinatubo Trio." IAN SANGALANG Another third of the "Pinatubo Trio," Sangalang had polished post moves from the moment he stepped into the collegiate ranks. He became an all-around player in his later years in San Sebastian, however, and much of that was thanks to the guidance of Coach Topex. The 6-foot-7 big man's MVP came in the season that went unfinished by Robinson, but there remains no doubt that the latter had a huge hand in the rise of the latter. ROBERT BOLICK LPU was woken up from its dream season in Season 93 by San Beda University - who else but dynastic San Beda University. In particular, it was Bolick who dashed their dreams, dropping seven of his 24 points in the last two minutes of Game 1 and delivering seven of his 22 markers in the last five minutes of Game 2. The only thing unfortunate about the Pirates' transformation into a powerhouse was that it just so coincided with the self-proclaimed bench player in De La Salle University's transformation into "Big Shot Bolick." RAYMOND ALMAZAN (Photo courtesy of Mark Cristino, ABS-CBN News) In the early 2010s, San Beda's challenger in the Finals was either San Sebastian or Colegio de San Juan de Letran. In the same time that Baste was the stage for the "Pinatubo Trio," Letran was home to tantalizing talents such as Kevin Alas, Rey Guevarra, and RJ Jazul. Among them, though, it was only the 6-foot-8 Almazan who stood out enough to be recognized as MVP - and his two-way impact throughout his collegiate career has most definitely not gone unnoticed by opposing coaches. --- Coach Topex did not go into detail as to why he went with these five players. In general, though, he said that these five are "for a fact, the best that the NCAA has produced in the last 10 years." Even better, Robinson said that all of Perez, Abueva, Sangalang, Bolick, and Almazan are, at present, keeping at proving his point as stars in the PBA. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
