‘Be BIDA ambassadors’: Abalos told Asiad medalists
Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos on Friday urged the 33 Filipino medalists at the recent 19th Asian Games in China to serve as ambassadors of the government's flagship anti-illegal drugs advocacy program "Buhay Ingatan, Droga'y Ayawan" (BIDA). The call was made by Abalos to encourage and inspire more Filipino youth to focus on sports and other healthy and productive activities and turn away from the scourge of illegal drugs. Abalos appealed as he joined President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during the "Gabi ng Parangal at Pasasalamat sa Bayaning Atletang Pilipino" ceremony held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. “Inaanyayahan namin kayo na makibahagi at tumulong sa programang BIDA bilang mga ambassador. Kayo ang magiging boses ng BIDA para himukin ang mga kabataan na maging aktibo sa sports at ayawan ang droga,” he said. Abalos said the 33 Filipino athletes who brought home medals from the recent 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China can serve as positive and effective role models for the Filipino youth, “as they have shown that engaging in sports can both be rewarding and beneficial for one’s health and well-being”. "One of the strategies of the BIDA program is to promote health and wellness activities to encourage people, especially the youth to lead healthy lives. At nakakasigurado ako na malaki ang maitutulong ng ating mga atletang Pilipino sa bagay na ito,” he said. For his part, President Marcos said that the victorious Filipino athletes made the country proud and boosted the morale of the entire nation. “To our hardworking coaches, the leaders of various sports associations, and of course, to our athletes, congratulations. On behalf of a proud and grateful nation, I salute and recognize the excellent performances that you displayed in the 19th Asian Games,” he said after conferring Presidential Citation Awards to the medalists. He also promised to increase the national government’s funding support for the athletes going forward, in pursuit of achieving better results in future international competitions. PBBM congratulates EJ Obiena for winning Phl’s first Asiad gold
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Sunday congratulated pole vault champion EJ Obiena on winning the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on Saturday night and taking home the nation's first gold medal. Marcos congratulated Obiena on X (formerly Twitter) after the pole vault king cleared 5.75 meters and later cleared 5.90 meters to clinch the gold medal. “Congratulations, EJ, on clinching our first gold in the men’s pole vault at the 19th Asian Games!” Marcos said. “Kudos as well to Patrick King Perez, Jones Inso, Gideon Padua, Clemente Tabugara Jr., Alex Eala, and Francis Casey Alcantara for their outstanding performances in Taekwondo, Wushu, and Tennis! Best of luck to all our athletes competing ahead!” he added. Obiena, for his part, said that he worked under pressure just to win the first gold medal for the Philippines. However, he felt the weight of the expectations, implying quietly that living up to those expectations did take a toll on him. "It's a privilege to be in this position where the whole country is literally expecting gold because of you guys, so good job, and thank God, I didn't crack," Obiena said during a media scrum moments after his first Asian Games conquest. Japan's Seito Yamamoto held the Asian Games record, jumping 5.70 meters. But Obiena broke that record with his jump. At 6.0 meters, the Filipino pole vaulter holds the record for all of Asia. Our team
The 19th Asian Games have yet to start, but Gilas Pilipinas is already winning the hearts and minds of Filipinos. Gilas coach Tim Cone swept local fans off their feet when he allowed them to watch their joint training session with the Gilas Women team last Thursday at the PhilSports Arena. After their workout, San Miguel Corporation director Alfrancis Chua gave the fans five minutes to have their pictures taken with their basketball idols. But when Cone approached Chua, he suddenly changed his mind and increased the allotted time to 15 minutes. Seeing Gilas — a collection of the country’s most popular and wealthiest athletes — go out of their way to mingle with fans is truly heartwarming. And it won’t be the last time they will see their basketball heroes as Cone has invited them anew to watch their friendly match against Changwon LG Sakers on Friday. But just a few weeks ago, this beautiful bond between Gilas and their fans was unthinkable. Gilas struggled to gain public support during the country’s hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup. At the same time, their head coach, Chot Reyes, was being bashed and heckled mercilessly due to their forgettable performance. Fans questioned Reyes’s integrity as a coach, especially when he benched Kai Sotto in their first game against the Dominican Republic. He was also criticized for relying too much on National Basketball Association star Jordan Clarkson, raising speculations that he was unprepared for the world’s biggest and most prestigious basketball event. The fans inside the Smart Araneta Coliseum made their presence felt. They booed Reyes during the player introductions against Italy, prompting some of his players, like Kiefer Ravena, Rhenz Abando and Clarkson, to rush to his defense. Even Reyes’s outfit didn’t escape the eyes of the public. Social media exploded with insults, adverse reactions, and comments after Reyes flaunted an ultra-expensive Thom Browne suit during their game against Angola. The money he spent, reportedly around P200,000, wasn’t worth it as Gilas suffered a 70-80 loss to the Angolans, dealing a major blow to their chances of advancing to the knockout stages. But his manner of coaching and posh outfit were not the only reasons Reyes struggled to deodorize his public image. When Gilas was preparing for the World Cup, Reyes shut the doors of their practice facility to fans and sportswriters. Instead of making the team available, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas assigned a media liaison who disseminated information and narrated what was happening through short videos and photos regularly posted on social media. That was the practice when Gilas trained at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, as well as when they were in Estonia and Lithuania. Gilas also played friendly matches against Ivory Coast, Mexico, and Montenegro at the PhilSports Arena with no one but a very few team staffers and federation officials in attendance. With the friendly matches being inaccessible, sportswriters had to resort to checking the social media pages of Gilas’s opponents and the SBP to get information and avoid the wrath of their editors. They jokingly called it “socmed journalism.” That’s why the appointment of Cone as Gilas’ head coach is a breath of fresh air. The 65-year-old Cone may be an American, but he knows the importance of gaining public approval. In fact, he started his career as a villain in the eyes of the masses after engaging with the charismatic Robert Jaworski in numerous coaching battles. But he let his coaching do the talking as he led Alaska to a grand slam in 1996 before winning another triple crown with San Mig Coffee in 2014. At Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, the most popular professional team in the country, Cone further cemented his reputation as a well-loved, well-respected coach when he turned the likes of LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar, Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee into fan favorites. Now, Cone is at the helm of Gilas Pilipinas, armed with a mission of not only winning an Asian Games medal but also bringing the national players closer to the public. It’s a tough order. But Cone is carrying it out to perfection. The post Our team appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Bong Go highlights significance of education in ensuring a brighter future
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, adopted son of CALABARZON, underscored the significance of education as a gateway to a brighter future during the 50th Commencement Exercises of Cavite State University - CCAT Rosario Campus on Tuesday, September 5. The graduation ceremony was also attended by other officials, such as Rosario Vice Mayor Bamm Gonzales and General Trias Mayor Jonjon Ferrer, among others. “Sa mga graduates, sa mga estudyante, kahit anong course po ang inyong kinuha, ishi-share ko lang po sa inyo ang natutunan ko sa buhay. Isa lang ang sikreto diyan, mahalin n’yo po ang inyong kapwa Pilipino, hinding-hindi po kayo magkakamali. Malay n’yo po pagdating ng panahon kayo rin po ang mamumuno sa bayan o magiging senador ng bansa. Totoo iyan. Kaya unahin ninyo ang interes ng kapwa natin Pilipino,” Go said in his speech. “Ako po hindi ko po akalain na magiging senador po ako. At nagpapasalamat ako sa inyo, sa Panginoon na dinala po niya ako rito. Kaya naniniwala ako na ang serbisyo sa tao ay serbisyo sa Diyos,” he continued. Go emphasized how education can open doors to countless opportunities as he commended the graduates for their dedication and perseverance, recognizing their hard work throughout their academic journey. He reminded them that their graduation marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with possibilities and challenges. “Ngayong araw, tayo'y nagkakaisa upang parangalan hindi lamang ang pagwawakas ng academic journey kundi ang pagsilang ng isang bagong yugto sa buhay ng 680 estudyante ng inyong unibersidad,” highlighted Go. “Half a century ago, this campus was founded with a dream to cultivate abilities and expertise in the realms of Industrial Technology, Engineering, Information and Communication Technology, Hotel and Restaurant Management, and Education. Now, that dream persists, and I am both honored and humbled to be part of this milestone commencement ceremony,” he continued. The senator also expressed his gratitude to the school officials, including University President Dr. Hernando Robles, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Ma. Agnes Nuestro, Vice President for Research and Extension Dr. Mary Jane Tepora, Vice President for Business and Resource Generation Ms. Lolita Herrera, and Campus Administrator Dr. Lauro Pascua, among others. “To the committed University Administrative Council, our distinguished campus leaders, honored deans, and the lively academic community that envelops us, I offer my sincere thanks for your unwavering dedication to excellence,” Go highlighted. “To the parents and guardians, your affection and encouragement have been the pillars of these graduates' achievements. Your faith in them has ignited their resolve, and today, we revel in your victory as well,” he added. In his speech, Go took the opportunity to discuss his legislative efforts aimed at fortifying the education sector. He expressed his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of Filipinos through various initiatives. SBN 1359 or the "No Permit, No Exam Prohibition Act," was co-authored and co-sponsored by Go and received approval on the third and final reading in March. This proposed legislation aims to put an end to the practice of denying students access to examinations or other educational assessments due to unpaid tuition or school fees. The bill ensures that no student's education is compromised due to financial constraints. In a bid to enhance access to tertiary education, Go co-authored and co-sponsored SBN 1360. This bill seeks to expand the coverage of the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) by amending Republic Act No. 10931, known as the Universal Access To Quality Tertiary Education Act. By broadening the reach of TES, Go expressed his confidence that more underprivileged students will have the opportunity to pursue higher education. In times of disasters and emergencies, students facing financial hardships often find it challenging to repay loans. To address this concern, Go introduced SBN 1864, known as the "Student Loan Payment Moratorium During Disasters and Emergencies Act." This proposed measure offers relief to students who have taken out loans but are unable to meet their repayment obligations due to unforeseen circumstances. It underscores the importance of compassion and support during trying times. Go also earlier authored and co-sponsored RA 11470, establishing the National Academy of Sports (NAS) in 2020 as part of his vision to ensure promising young athletes can further hone their talents while getting a quality education. NAS is a government-run academy aimed at developing the country’s future athletes by offering quality secondary education with a special curriculum on sports for gifted young Filipinos who want to enhance their physical and mental capabilities in sports. “To the graduates, remember that your education is not merely a ladder for personal success; it is a potent tool for uplifting our community and the broader society. Wield it with wisdom, and never lose sight of the values and principles that have been so lovingly instilled in you,” Go said. “As I draw to a close, I leave you with a philosophy that has steered me throughout my existence: ‘Ang edukasyon ay hindi lamang isang karapatan, kundi isang tungkulin na may kalakip na responsibilidad.’ Mabuhay ang Cavite State University – CCAT Rosario Campus! Mabuhay ang mga bagong graduates,” the senator concluded. Go also provided tokens to students who graduated with honors. He encouraged them to use their education to serve their community and the country. FIBA World Cup experience: Springboard to greater heights
Congratulations are in order for the whole Gilas Pilipinas Team for their monumental win versus China (96-75), ending our FIBA World Cup 2023 campaign on a hopeful note. I have always believed in the capabilities of our athletes who have shown their mettle in international sports competitions. As chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, I am rallying all Filipinos to support our long-term roadmap to elevate the standing of our athletes in the global arena in all sporting events. Filipinos have excelled in the global stage not just in basketball, billiards, or boxing which are relatively the more popular sports in the country. Take for example Carlos Yulo in gymnastics, EJ Obiena in pole vaulting, Hidilyn Diaz in weightlifting, the late Lydia de Vega in track and field, and, of course, the Filipinas Football team who made us proud during the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup. Our very own Alex Eala is also a rising star in the world of tennis. We have many talented athletes, and we should support them in their quest to give honor to the country. However, success in any sporting event does not come easily. Any athlete will tell you that sports entails discipline, many hours of hard work, and even years of sacrifices. Hence, our efforts to strengthen our chances on the global stage must start at the grassroots level. This is the rationale behind RA 11470 or the National Academy of Sports or NAS law, which I authored and co-sponsored, and signed into law by former president Rodrigo Duterte in 2020. The NAS System will provide scholarships to qualified student-athletes from all regions and will allow them to balance academics and sports training by utilizing the state-of-the-art facilities at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac. I am also advocating the approval of Senate Bill No. 423 or the Philippine National Games or PNG Act, to institutionalize the conduct of the PNG every two years as this will allow us to discover those with athletic potential at the grassroots level. We have talented athletes, but the government must invest in providing them with opportunities to compete if we want to produce champions on both the national and international stages. I am pushing for SBN 2116, which will amend Section 8 of RA 10699 or the “National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.” This will increase the incentives for para-athletes who will win medals in international competitions and make our approach more inclusive to all athletes regardless of their physical limitations. Our efforts to achieve victory in sports must reflect the diversity of our country. The government, together with the private sector and other stakeholders, must consistently provide all the support that our teams need to compete at the global level. Our focus must be on creating opportunities for all aspiring athletes, regardless of geographic or economic background, to excel in their chosen fields. Hence, we should bring our sports development programs closer to those who have the potentials and aspirations to represent our country and bring pride to every Filipino. More importantly, sports is not only a physical game but a means to uplift lives, keep our youth away from vices like illegal drugs, and strengthen camaraderie in our communities. Let us elevate sports as a viable tool in harnessing our citizens into disciplined, productive and patriotic individuals reflective of our Filipino pride. In the same way that we unite to support our athletes, let us also unite to support fellow Filipinos in need. That is why I have continued to engage with various sectors of society to listen to their concerns and help provide solutions to their daily struggles. Filipinos inherently have a “never say die” attitude, especially in sports which is reflective of our resilience as a society. But aside from this commendable trait, our resilience also stems from our inherent compassion for each other. Our “Tapang at Malasakit” must continue so that together, we can uplift the lives of Filipinos. As a Senator and public servant, I remain steadfast in supporting our athletes to reach greater heights while also exerting efforts to help bring government programs and services closer to those in need to provide them with opportunities for a better life. Kuya Bong drills integrity, leadership on Malabon grads
During the 28th commencement exercises of the City of Malabon University on Friday, 28 July, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go stressed the qualities of malasakit (concern), integrity and leadership as guiding principles for future undertakings. “Your time at the City of Malabon University has not only equipped you with the academic proficiency required for your chosen fields, but it has also molded you into well-rounded individuals who possess the virtues of compassion, integrity, and leadership,” he said to the graduating class. As the graduates prepare to enter a world of limitless possibilities, Go reminded them of their critical role: “Graduates, you are not merely leaders of tomorrow; you are leaders of today.” He also emphasized the importance of their prospective contributions and distinctive perspectives in a variety of fields, including business, science, the arts, and public service. The senator also challenged students to take advantage of every chance to positively impact others, noting that success is determined not only by personal accomplishments but also by the communities inspired and lives affected. Go’s statements also demonstrated his dedication to public service, even in the face of peril. He recalled traveling to the most remote parts of the country, including Basilan, Batanes and Jolo, to respond to disasters and emergencies. He emphasized his commitment to working for improved access to high-quality education. He stated that the Duterte administration made the enactment of Republic Act 10931, commonly known as the “Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act,” a law that exempts qualifying college students from paying tuition and other school expenses, a top priority. He also mentioned the approval of RA 11470 by the last Congress, which resulted in the founding of the National Academy of Sports, which provides world-class training and education to qualified student-athletes. Go, head of the Senate Committee on Health, spoke about his health initiatives, including RA 11463, the Malasakit Centers Act, which aimed to increase access to medical assistance programs. Go urged anyone in need of medical attention to visit any of Metro Manila’s Malasakit Centers, particularly those at the Ospital ng Malabon and San Lorenzo Ruiz General Hospital. The Malasakit Center aims to make medical assistance programs more accessible by bringing together all relevant agencies, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Health, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, under one roof. Along with this, Go mentioned the recent passage in Congress of the Regional Specialty Centers Bill, which he supported as one of the authors in the Senate. The bill, which is pending the President’s signature, intends to make specialty health services available in all regions of the Philippines. Go announced the construction of three Super Health Centers in Malabon, which will improve local health facilities. Database management, out-patient, childbirth, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: X-ray and ultrasound), pharmacy, and ambulatory surgical unit are some of the basic services provided by SHCs. Eye, ear, nose, and throat services, oncology facilities, physical therapy and rehabilitation institutes, and telemedicine are all provided. The senator expressed his sincere appreciation and gratitude to the City of Malabon University, while also praising its dedication to providing outstanding education and fostering graduates who will mold the future. He reminded students that education is a lifelong path of discovery, self-discovery, and progress, and he encouraged them to embrace it with open hearts and minds. During the event, Go and his crew presented tokens, such as gift packs and pencils, to 666 graduating students, with a special emphasis on those who received honors. He also commended local politicians for their dedicated commitment to the community, particularly Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval and Vice Mayor Bernard dela Cruz. PSL teams near training resumption
Training of Philippine Superliga (PSL) teams will resume as soon as the government lifts the modified enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila and nearby cities. PSL chairman Philip Ella Juico on Tuesday said they have formally received the green light to return to training through a memorandum from the Department of Health dated July 23. In the letter, DoH Assistant Secretary Nestor Santiago approved and made some recommendations on the health and safety guidelines submitted by the PSL regarding the conduct of physical activities and sports during the coronavirus pandemic. The DoH stated that practices of PSL teams would start under the general community quarantine, where only five players would be allowed with a skeletal workforce of up to 10 persons and non-contact sports limited only to strength training. Juico said the news was such a major development since they officially became the first women’s volleyball league to be given the go-signal to resume their training and conditioning sessions. “I am pleased to inform you that the health and safety protocols that we submitted to the Department of Health had been approved with some recommendations,” Juico said in a statement. “This is really a big development as we are the first volleyball league to be allowed to return to training. We assured the government that we will do everything to follow the protocols and make sure that training and conditioning sessions would be safe and healthy for everyone,” said Juico. A former chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission and currently the president of the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association, Juico said mandatory swab testing is no longer needed since women’s volleyball is not as physical as professional basketball, football and boxing, which were all given the approval to return to training through a Joint Administrative Order from the DoH, Games and Amusement Board and the Philippine Sports Commission. Instead, swab testing would in accordance to the discretion of all member teams. They, however, were required to coordinate with the various local government units, where teams would conduct their trainings, to ensure proper monitoring and compliance. Teams were also instructed to appoint a medical liaison that would monitor the movements of players and coaches and report it to Dr. Raul Alcantara -- the league’s head of the medical oversight committee -- to make sure that all DoH-approved guidelines would be followed. “Each team will have a medical representative or a liaison,” Juico said. “These liaisons would be the one who will monitor the movement of the players and log their observations in a time sheet that would be submitted to the league’s medical oversight committee. We will assure that everything will be kept in private in accordance to the confidentiality clause between doctor and patients.” The MECQ started Tuesday and will last until 18 August. “We will write again to DoH after one or two months of training to seek approval for the start of our competition, which is the All-Filipino Conference,” Juico said. “But for now, we have to make sure that all protocols would be followed and trainings would be safe for everyone, especially to the athletes.”.....»»

UAAP 2nd sem athletes celebrated as UST claims general title anew
For the fourth year in a row, there is no movement at the mountaintop of the UAAP. University of Sto. Tomas has been hailed as General Champion for the Srs. Tournaments once more as it ran away with the crown with 209 total points. The Growling Tigers were officially recognized as such in the Season 82 closing ceremony held online Saturday. They built their overall win on gold medals in men's and women's beach volleyball, men's and women's table tennis, and men's judo. All that was more than enough to grant them a more than 30-point lead over runner-up De La Salle University. And all that was more than enough to notch the 44th mark in Srs. General Championships for the black and gold. UST's high school was not going to be outdone as well as it rode its 159 total points all the way to the mountaintop of the Jrs. Tournaments. On the back of wins in boys' and girls' swimming, boys' baseball, boys' judo, and boys' taekwondo, the Tiger Cubs got the better of second-placer La Salle Zobel for their sixth straight Jrs. General Championship. Meanwhile, student-athletes whose campaigns were cut short by the continuing COVID-19 crisis were recognized in the event shown on ABS-CBN Sports' online platforms. Those include competitors in athletics, baseball, football, indoor volleyball, lawn tennis softball, and track and field which were all set to go, or even already underway, before the pandemic forced all second semester sports to end earlier than expected. That was exactly why the UAAP went out of its way to still give these student-athletes their shine. Even better for so-called super seniors from those second semester sports, the league has already reportedly discussed and deliberated the proposed one-year extension of their eligibility. According to outgoing president Em Fernandez, the proposal is just awaiting the approval of the league's Board of Trustees. That means that student-athletes such as Arlyn Bautista from Adamson University softball, Jho Maraguinot and Kat Tolentino from Ateneo de Manila University women's volleyball, Diego Lozano from De La Salle University men's baseball, Ricky Marcos from National University men's volleyball, and Miggy Clarino from the University of the Philippines' men's football have an option to play out their last year of eligibility next season instead. Next season will see De La Salle University taking over hosting duties from Ateneo. The formal passing of the hosting of baton officially wrapped up UAAP Season 83. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
PSC, NSAs conduct training protocol meetings
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has been conducting meetings with different National Sports Associations (NSA) to discuss training resumption guidelines for the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games hopefuls and qualifiers. Health professionals from the PSC-MSAS (Medical Scientific Athletes Services) unit has been discussing the updated protocol and minimum health standards of training venues with each concerned NSA since Monday. “The PSC recognizes that our Olympic hopefuls need to maintain momentum and they do that by going back to focused training,” explained National Training Director Marc Velasco. The briefings, according to Velasco, will help NSA leaders in plotting down their health and safety protocol. The PSC-MSAS will consolidate proposals from the sports bodies concerning training resumption, especially for Olympic sports, and submit a recommendation to the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for approval. “This is to brief them on how they will formulate their updated protocol. This is also for submission to the IATF to allow Olympic qualifying sports to start training,” said Velasco. Velasco underscored that "the IATF is always the last say and that these will just be recommendations." Secretary-General Attorney Edwin Gastanes represented the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) during the meetings with Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) Secretary-General Ed Picson, Philippine Fencing Association (PFA) President Richard Gomez, and Secretary-General Jercyl Lerin from the Philippine Rowing Association (PRA). NSA officials from World Archery Philippines, Inc represented by Secretary-General Rosendo Sombrio, Atty. Meeting with Philippine Judo Federation President Dave Carter and Gymnastics Association of the Philippines President Cynthia Carrion-Norton on July 23 followed. Headed by MSAS’ Dr. Randolph Molo, meetings with NSA officials from the National Association of Golf Philippines and Karate Pilipinas Sports Federation, Inc. were held Friday.
