Iloilo celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride this October
This October, the Western Visayan city of Iloilo in Panay Island is celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride with an array of different events, called Pride Pyesta, led by the organization Iloilo Pride Team with support from the Iloilo City government, Iloilo LGBTQIA+ Network, Youth Voices Count Inc. and Megaworld Lifestyle Malls. With the theme “Iloilo Embraces Hue,” this year’s celebration kicked off with an opening ceremony at the Sunburst Park on 1 October. The program included messages; unveiling of Layag Up, an LGBTQ+ landmark; SOGIESC Cup oath of sportsmanship; presentation of the contestants of the Rajah at Diwata sang Iloilo; and the official sashing of the contestants of the Search for SOGIESC Ambassador. [caption id="attachment_191688" align="aligncenter" width="525"] A biker group joined the Ride for hue. | photograph courtesy of Marshal Bikers[/caption] This was followed by the Ride for Hue: Pride Pyesta Pamukaw and Pride Ride, involving bikers going around the city center and making it more colorful. Also, on the same day, Iloilo Pride Team’s project Art x Pride opened its exhibit, “Kinaiya: A Red Rag to a Bull” at Festive Mall Iloilo, which runs until 22 October. According to the organization, “Art X Pride, which started back in 2021, is an initiative aiming to highlight the talents of LGBTQIA+ artists in the fields of literary writing and visual arts focusing on finding out how art became a movement to achieve change, promote equality, and, most importantly, acquire freedom as it focuses on the theme, “Celebrating myself through art, by art, and with art.” It has always been one of the advocacies of the Iloilo Pride Team to support the community through their many talents as well as provide living and local artists a spotlight on all possible platforms.” “This year, Art X Pride dives deeper into the nuances and subversiveness of queer art, and how it should not be subdued to conform to the societally accepted themes of today. Similar to a red rag irritating the bull, art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable,” they added. Other cultural events in the Pride Pyesta calendar include “#HowInequalityLooksLike,” which has been touring the country and which will be mounted from 8 to 22 October at Festive Mall. The exhibit features portraits of LGBTQ+ persons and their experiences of marginalization, discrimination and inequality. The Dakila Iloilo Collective will hold a poster making activity on 17 October, also at Festive Walk Mall. From 19 to 21 October, the Cinemakulay film festival will be held at Cinematheque Center Iloilo, screening LGBTQ+ films. Iloilo Pride Pyesta is also an opportunity to learn more and to facilitate discussions with its lineup of talks. A popular one is the Kalipayan Talks, which deals with sex, an often taboo subject. This year, it will be held on 16 October at Festive Mall Iloilo and will be tackling polyamory, asexuality, BDSM (bondage, discipline or domination, sadism and masochism), consent and experiences of persons living with HIV or PLHIV. On the other hand, the Gender and Safe Spaces Forum will tackle intersexuality, sexual and reproductive health and rights and HIV/AIDS on 7 October at the San Agustin University Auditorium. The Family Planning Organization of the Philippines will present TransHealth Talk on 13 October at SM City Iloilo mall. [caption id="attachment_191687" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Drag queen Avria La Veen will conduct a drag workshop. | photograph courtesy of Avria La Veen[/caption] In recent years, with its rise in popularity, drag has been a vibrant part of the celebration. On 14 October, The Queen Inside of Hue: Drag Workshop will be held at the B Lifestyle Complex. Drag queen Avria La Veen will give pointers on makeup, hair styling, runway walking, performance and stage presence. Other events include the SOGIESC Volleyball Tournament from 9 to 20 October at the Zamora-Melliza Uswag Gym; the official sashing of Rajah at Diwata sang Iloilo at SM City Iloilo on 13 October; and Libreng Gupit: A Ginhawa 2.0 Mental Health Resilience and Well-being Program on 27 October at Sunburst Park. The celebration will culminate on 22 October with a Pride march with street dancing from Iloilo Esplanade to Festive Mall Iloilo, where a program will held together with the Search for SOGIESC Ambassador Pageant, Laban Mamsh: A Lipsync Battle and Drop the Ball: A Drag Competition. More than 50 killed, dozens wounded in Pakistan blasts
More than 50 people were killed and dozens more wounded in Pakistan's Balochistan province on Friday by a suicide bomber targeting a procession marking the birthday of Islam's Prophet Mohammed, officials said. A second suicide attack by two men at a mosque hundreds of kilometers north in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province led to a roof collapse that killed four people, officials said. While the celebration of the Prophet's birthday is accepted by the majority of Islamic sects in Pakistan and elsewhere in the Muslim world, certain denominations view it as an unwarranted innovation. In southwestern Balochistan, officials said a suicide bomber detonated a device as rallies from neighborhood mosques converged on a meeting point in Mastung, around 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the provincial capital, Quetta. "My feet trembled and I was thrown to the ground," said 49-year-old Hazoor Bakhsh. "As the dust settled, I saw people scattered in all directions, some screaming while others called out for help." Local hospitals were overwhelmed by the number of wounded, and provincial authorities used social media platforms to appeal for blood donors. The death toll kept climbing throughout the day. "I can confirm that the death toll has increased to 52, with over 70 individuals injured," Munir Ahmed Shaikh, the deputy inspector-general of Balochistan's police force, told AFP. Every year, mosques and government buildings are elaborately illuminated with strings of lights, and people march in processions to mark the Prophet's birthday. On the same occasion in April 2006, a suicide bomber killed at least 50 people in the port city of Karachi after detonating a device at a gathering of Sunni Muslims. Surge in violence Friday's blast comes as Pakistan prepares for an election due in January next year -- while grappling with a political crisis, a crippled economy, and a surge in militant violence inspired by the return to power of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2021. Jan Achakzai, Balochistan's minister for information, announced a three-day mourning period. Balochistan, Pakistan's least populous province, is also home to several militant groups fighting for independence or a greater share of the region's mineral resources. Hundreds of kilometres north in Hangu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, four people were killed after the roof of a mosque collapsed following a suicide attack. "Two militants, armed with automatic firearms, hand grenades, and suicide vests attempted to breach the mosque's security," senior district police officer Nisar Ahmad told AFP. "They were intercepted at the main entrance leading to an exchange of gunfire. One of them detonated his vest, while the other managed to enter the mosque's hall through a window." Ahmad said most of those inside had managed to escape as the shooting started, but the detonation of the second bomber's vest brought the roof down, killing four people. In July, more than 40 people were killed in a suicide bombing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at a religious political party's gathering. Pakistan's Taliban have stepped up attacks against military and government targets since the return to power of the Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan. But the group said it had nothing to do with the Balochistan attack. The regional chapter of the Islamic State group, known as Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K), has also carried out attacks in the area in the past. "The attack on innocent people who came to participate in the procession... is a very heinous act," the interior ministry said in a statement. Separately, Pakistan's military said Friday four soldiers had been killed as they fought an attempt by TTP militants to infiltrate Balochistan from Afghanistan. PBBM lauds Filipino civil servants for quality service to fellow countrymen
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. thanked the Filipino civil servants for their dedication and commitment to delivering quality service to the Filipino people. In a video message posted on state-run Radio Television Malacañang on Tuesday, Marcos paid tribute to the country's 1.8 million public servants on the occasion of the 123rd Philippine Civil Service Anniversary. "Thank you for your dedication despite the numerous challenges that we experience in our respective occupations. Let us strive harder in achieving our united goal of providing a better future for our country," he said. Marcos also highlighted the importance of public service in nation-building. "Public service is a noble calling. It is an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of our fellow Filipinos," he said. "I urge all public servants to continue to uphold the highest standards of excellence and integrity in their work," he added. The President also recognized the Civil Service Commission for its steadfast commitment and continuous efforts to transform the Philippine bureaucracy into an agile and future-ready organization. "My appreciation also goes to the CSC for the steadfast commitment and continuously transforming the human resource and organization of the Philippine bureaucracy. In this way, we will hone agile and future-ready servant heroes," he said. Marcos' message comes as the country celebrates the Civil Service Anniversary, commemorating the CSC's establishment via Public Law No. 5 on 5 September 1900. The CSC spearheaded the observance of the 123rd anniversary of the Philippine Civil Service, in accordance with Presidential Proclamation 1050, which was issued in 1997 and designates September as Civil Service Month. In 2021, the CSC introduced a 10-year overarching theme, "Advancing Public Service in the Coming Decade: Enhancing Adaptability and Preparing for the Future among Public Servants." This theme reflects the shared experiences of government employees in adapting to the new normal and emphasizes the promotion of digital transformation and innovations to maintain high standards of public service and continuity. This year's Philippine Civil Service Anniversary celebration centers on the significance of nurturing dynamism among government personnel to promote sustainable management and reinforce organizational resilience. Bohol beneficiaries receive ‘happy homes’
In a gesture of compassion and community spirit, elderly Commissioners and Faith Corps from Tzu Chi Manila flew to Bohol on 18 August 2023 to help transform the lives of three beneficiaries of the “Happy Home” project in Bohol. This charitable initiative aimed to provide hope and stability to those who had their homes severely battered by typhoon “Odette” in December 2021. The volunteers set off from Tagbilaran City to Sagbayan to turn over new homes to their owners. [caption id="attachment_182279" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] The ‘Happy Home‘ turnover coincided with Gleceria Celades’ birthday, making it a double celebration for the 87-year-old recipient.[/caption] Fernando Navarez, 62, a bachelor from Katipunan, Sagbayan Bohol, faced paralysis and speech impairment when he suffered a stroke in 2012. After typhoon “Odette” destroyed his home, he tried to rebuild a shanty for his shelter located on top of a slope, while barangay officials supported him through monthly food rations. Upon learning of Tzu Chi Bohol’s “Happy Home” project, one of his neighbors sought help for him to have a liveable home. Navarez was most grateful for the home he received from the charity organization. Gleceria Celades, 87, from Canmaya Diot in Sagbayan, lived alone in home built from salvaged materials that was then destroyed by typhoon “Odette.” The “Happy Home” turnover coincided with her birthday, making it a meaningful double celebration for Celades, who said the moment was a turning point in her life. Finally, 64-year-old Felipa Gonzaga, a resident of San Roque in Sagbayan, turned to Tzu Chi Bohol for assistance following the devastating aftermath of “Odette.” Felipa and her family found refuge in their daughter's dwelling nearby, living off mainly on the senior citizen pension of Felipa and her husband. [caption id="attachment_182295" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] Felipa Gonzaga (left), 64, and her family can now rebuild anew in their new home.[/caption] But with the help of Tzu Chi, now she can rebuild anew and restore the safety and stability of her family's abode. Embo public school teachers will no longer enjoy Makati benefits
Teachers at the public schools located in the enlisted men's barrios or embo barangays will no longer enjoy the benefits they receive from the local government of Makati City starting this year after the disputed barangays became part of the territory of Taguig City. A teacher of a public elementary school in one of the embo barangays said, that apart from the financial aid that they receive from Makati City, they were also given hair salon gift vouchers to make themselves look beautiful during National Teachers' Day. "Even teachers have nothing to wait for during teachers' day. It's complete—with jacket and everything else. We were also given a voucher for David Salon to pamper ourselves and look beautiful," the teacher, whose identity was withheld, told The Daily Tribune. "Now, all of these benefits that we receive from Makati City are gone. We are not also included to receive the living allowance," she added. Aside from the P3,000 monthly incentive allowance, Makati City has also provided public school teachers with brand new laptops and internet load that they used for online classes during the pandemic. Public school teachers were also given teachers' kits containing a bluetooth speaker, wireless presenter, tumbler, teachers' plan, students data record, first aid kit, Makatizen pouch with school supplies, notepad, 64GB flash drive, voice amplifier, laptop bag and a Makatizen jacket, P500 worth of gift certificate for healthy foods and drinks, P700 worth of gift certificates for salon make-over, and P1,500 worth of gift certificates for groceries and vitamins given every World Teachers’ Day. During the 2021 World Teachers' Day celebration, the city government gave teachers digital teachers' kits that contained a jacket, boom microphone, numeric keypad, mini tripod, ring light, external sound card, backpack with UV sterilizer, tumbler holder, and pen tablet. There is also the possibility that the provision of instructional materials could be taken away from the teachers because they are no longer under the care of Makati City. "Definitely, one of the challenges is the provision of instructional materials for teachers. We just heard that the laptops, television sets, and projectors will be taken away from them," Alma Cayabyan Adona, principal of West Rembo Elementary School, told this reporter in an earlier interview. Adona also said they have already coordinated with the local government of Taguig City regarding the provision of instructional materials that they need for teaching. "They are now processing the requests of our teachers because they [teachers] need that. They are used to using it for how many years of teaching," she said. "But we can wait because we know it won't be given right away. It will really entail a lot of processes to procure that kind of equipment— the teachers were told to just wait because they will find ways to provide all these things to our teachers gradually." Legarda eyes expanded TESDA mandate in future
Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda today shared her vision for the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as it nears its third decade of existence. Legarda, a staunch supporter of the state agency, shared her desires for the agency, which has helped countless lives for almost three decades. “I want to envision TESDA expanding even further — where every Filipino has the opportunity to acquire the skills and tools they need to pursue their dreams and contribute to national progress,” said Legarda during her keynote address at TESDA’s anniversary celebration at SM Megamall. “Upskilling and reskilling must be an option that is available to all,” she added. “We must transform lives beyond the limitations of social and economic boundaries. TESDA has a large role to play in answering the demands of the labor sector and in shaping a labor force that is responsive, fit, and adaptive.” For her role in promoting various livelihood programs in her home province of Antique, Legarda was bestowed the National TESDA Kabalikat Award in 2021. Among the programs pushed were the Barangay Kabuhayan Skills Training Program (BKSTP), Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP), and Special Training for Employment Program (STEP), which has benefitted over 18,000 Antiqueño trainees since 2016. During the passage of the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, Legarda ensured that access to tertiary education included those in the technical-vocational sector. As one of her first pieces of legislation to open her fourth term in the Senate, Legarda pushed for the passage of Senate Bill No. 6, a proposed measure that seeks to create the Department of Technical Education, Training and Certification. Once passed, it will strengthen the role of the TESDA to serve as a leading partner in the development of the Filipino workforce. She also praised the agency for being at the forefront of web-based education through the TESDA Online Program, which has produced 3,220,912 course completions in 2022 alone. “The world is changing at a rapid pace — technology, automation, and digitalization are reshaping industries and demanding new skill sets,” remarked Legarda. “TESDA must be at the center of this. Our businesses and industries must connect with our educational institutions to assess, plan, and strategize our approach to providing quality technical-vocational education,” she continued. Phl-Korea FTA signed Sept.
The much-anticipated signing of a free trade agreement, or FTA, between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea will likely take place in September, the Department of Trade and Industry said on Monday. Trade Secretary Fred Pascual met with Minister Dukgeun Ahn of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of Korea last Sunday, 20 August 2023, during the 55th ASEAN Economic Ministers held in Semarang, Indonesia regarding the economic deal. “Both ministers welcomed the conclusion of the PH-ROK FTA negotiations and agreed to work for its signing, preferably at the sidelines of the 24th ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit in September 2023.” Supply chain deal In addition, “ the trade officials committed to working on a possible supply chain resilience cooperation to ensure stability and predictability of business operations, particularly in the manufacturing sector,” the DTI said. Further, the DTI said that in time for the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Philippines-Korea diplomatic relations, both ministers are also considering organizing a Business Forum to further boost trade and investment relations. The two sides first started negotiating the FTA in June 2019 before concluding negotiations in October 2021. But its signing was stalled several times. Under the Philippines-South Korea FTA, South Korea will lift tariffs on 94.8 percent of Philippine products, while the Philippines will cut tariffs on 96.5 percent of South Korean products. Other areas covered by the FTA include trade in goods, trade remedies, rules of origin, customs procedures and trade facilitation, economic and technical cooperation, competition, and legal and institutional issues. Taliban mark second year in power
The Taliban were to lead the celebration Tuesday of the second year of their ouster of the United States-led foreign forces despite the lack of international recognition of their so-called Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. A military parade in the Taliban movement’s birthplace, Kandahar, also marks their return to power after the fall of the US-backed government and exile of its former leaders in 2021. The parade includes scores of military vehicles and weapons left behind by international forces after a weeks-long chaotic withdrawal two years ago. Elsewhere, convoys of Taliban members are due to drive through the streets of Herat in the west, while in the capital Kabul, the education ministry will host a celebration at a school. But while some Afghans celebrate the end of fighting and Taliban rule, others see it as a grim anniversary. “All the girls and women of Afghanistan want their freedom back,” former student Hamasah Bawar said. In the two years since Taliban authorities have reimposed their strict interpretation of Islam on the country, women were banned from working and attending school. Afghan women ahead of the anniversary have expressed fear and despair over the loss of rights — a handful holding small demonstrations, many of their faces covered with masks. “Despite reassurances by the Taliban de facto authorities that any restrictions, particularly in terms of access to education would be temporary, the facts on the ground have demonstrated an accelerated, systematic, and all engulfing system of segregation, marginalization and persecution,” a group of United Nations experts said on Monday. The international community continues to grapple with how, and if, to engage with the Taliban authorities, with restrictions on women’s rights a key obstacle in negotiations over aid and recognition. Afghans also pointed to worry over an economic and humanitarian crisis in motion since the Taliban takeover, as aid dried up and sanctions were imposed. Kuya Bong reiterates push for accessible public health services
Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go has reiterated his commitment to promoting initiatives aimed at improving healthcare accessibility, such as the establishment of more Super Health Centers in the country. The lawmaker — during his attendance to the groundbreaking of yet another Super Health Center in Lala, Lanao del Norte — recognized the urgent need to address the basic health service requirements of Filipinos, particularly those residing in underserved areas. Go, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Health and Demography — emphasized that the idea of Super Health Centers stems from the need to bridge the healthcare gap that exists between urban and rural regions. He also cited that underserved areas often lack proper healthcare infrastructure, resulting in limited access to essential services such as diagnostics, treatment and preventive care as he pushed for the initiative in 2021. To address these challenges, Go envisions Super Health Centers as healthcare hubs that offer a wide range of services, including database management, outpatient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: X-ray and ultrasound), pharmacy, and an ambulatory surgical unit. Other services available include eye, ear, nose, and throat care, oncology centers, physical therapy and rehabilitation centers, and telemedicine, which enable remote diagnosis and treatment of patients. Meanwhile, Go acknowledged the commitment of all local officials, including Governor Imelda Dimaporo, Congresswoman Sittie Aminah Quibranza Dimaporo, Lala Mayor Angel Yap, and Vice Mayor Cesar Yap Jr., among others, for ensuring that those in grassroots communities get access to government health services. GM Also, in commemoration of Eid al-Adha, Go led a relief operation for indigents at the municipal evacuation center and provided relief items, such as grocery packs, masks, vitamins, and snacks to 1,000 struggling residents. The senator also gave away cellular phones, bicycles, shoes, shirts, watches, and balls for basketball and volleyball to select recipients. In addition, a team from the Department of Social Welfare and Development extended financial assistance. As vice chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go also supported several initiatives in the town, such as the construction of flood control and drainage structures and farm-to-market roads. He also helped in the completion of solar-powered street lights in some barangays. On the same day, Go visited Tubod and inspected the construction of a new legislative building, another infrastructure project he supported, and led a relief effort for 1,000 disadvantaged individuals. He was also in Nunungan where he joined the 64th Araw ng Lanao del Norte celebration and assisted more indigents. Go also joined the launch of the Mt. Inayawan Range Natural Park as an ASEAN Heritage Park. The post Kuya Bong reiterates push for accessible public health services appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Maggie Wilson explains choice of not having another child for now
Model-actress Maggie Wilson penned a lengthy message, explaining her choice of not having another baby for now, in an Instagram post on Thursday, 16 June. "I believe in resolving issues before bringing another child into this world," Wilson said in the caption. "I will only think about getting married again once the conflict is settled. I refuse until there is peace," she continued. Wilson's rift with her estranged husband has been highly publicized since they announced their split after 11 years of marriage in September 2021. The beauty queen also mentioned his son, Connor, in the post, who has been living with Consunji after the breakup. "I refuse to put my son through more trauma. He doesn't deserve that. I refuse to have him adapt without proper communication," Wilson said. "That is simply unfair to a child. I want my son to feel safe. To feel loved and to be able to love, feel and speak without fear," she wrote. Wilson ended her post with a message to all the fathers in time for the Father's Day celebration in the upcoming weekend. "So for Father's Day, teach your sons how to be compassionate, respectful, honest, accountable, and kind. Teach them how to communicate," Wilson said. "Teach them to be real men so their future partners can feel safe. Raise them to be good and be someone they can be proud of," she concluded. P240-M grant supports biodiversity conservation, local climate actions
In celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May, the United States government, through the US Agency for International Development, awarded P240 million ($4.3 million) in grants to help civil society organizations address the unique climate challenges faced by local communities across the Philippines. US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson joined Department of Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary Juan Miguel Cuna and Gerry Roxas Foundation Executive Director Glen de Castro to announce the 11 grants that will support efforts to conserve biodiversity, protect wildlife, and implement natural climate solutions. The grants were provided under USAID’s Investing in Sustainability and Partnership for Inclusive Growth and Regenerative Ecosystems Project. The recipient organizations are BaiAni Foundation, CBCP Caritas Filipinas Foundation, Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation, Diliman Science Research Foundation, Impl. Project Philippines, Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities, Mabuwaya Foundation, Surigao Economic Development and Microfinance Foundation, Tanggol Kalikasan, University of Santo Tomas Research and Endowment Foundation and Xavier Agricultural Extension Services Foundation. The Mabuwaya Foundation plans to use its grant to protect the intact forests of the Sierra Madre mountain range in Cagayan by addressing illegal logging and conversion of forest lands for agricultural use. The Xavier Agricultural Extension Service Foundation’s grant will strengthen community-based initiatives to restore and protect the mangrove forests and other marine ecosystems in Zamboanga Sibugay. “Through these grants, we are advancing sustainable local solutions that will help communities address the unique climate challenges they face,” said Carlson. “These grants contribute to our shared goal of a more resilient future where both people and nature thrive.” For more than six decades, USAID has partnered with the Philippine government and local organizations to conserve the country’s rich biodiversity and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Since 2021, USAID has provided more than P620 million ($11.7 million) to civil society organizations to amplify their efforts in achieving environmental sustainability and uplifting the lives of Filipino communities. The gold that mattered most
The sight of Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes pumping his fist in the air in midcourt while looking at the boisterous Cambodian crowd that supported their so-called national team peppered with naturalized players must have said it all. Redemption was written all over Chot’s face as the Filipinos finally slayed the ghost of their 68-79 debacle at the hands of the same team the first time they met last week in the basketball competitions of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games. The 80-69 revenge win over the host Cambodians came like a soothing balm for the wounded egos of the perennial regional champions who were roundly criticized after missing the gold two years ago and then again this year after bowing down to erstwhile doormat Cambodia. Less than 24 hours earlier, the gutsy Philippine five got back at Indonesia, the team that stripped them of the gold in the 2021 Vietnam Games, marking only the second time a Philippine squad failed to bring home the bacon in their favorite national pastime. “I know a lot of people doubted this time the first time we lost, what I didn’t tell you was that after the loss, I told them that ‘this is the loss that we could afford.’ We needed that loss, actually,” Chot said in the din of the celebration, marking the 19th time that the Philippines won the gold medal in men’s basketball. “The players did a hell of a job, they stuck together. We kept this Cambodian team of five, six Americans below 70 points,” he said referring to Cambodia’s naturalized players who surprised the Filipinos with a first-ever win last Thursday. The issue of naturalized players participating in the SEA Games, particularly in basketball, is a topic that has generated debates and differing opinions. While some argue that the presence of naturalized players undermines the integrity and spirit of the competition, others believe that it adds a new level of competitiveness and helps raise the overall standard of play. Critics argue that the inclusion of naturalized players creates an unfair advantage for certain countries. The disparity in skill and experience between naturalized players and those who have grown up within the country’s basketball development system can lead to lopsided contests, potentially diminishing the value of the competition. The increased reliance on naturalized players has reduced opportunities for local talents to represent their country at the Games. It has also hindered the growth and development of homegrown athletes who would otherwise have a chance to compete and gain experience on an international stage. Some contend that the essence of the SEA Games lies in promoting national pride and showcasing the skills of athletes who embody the spirit of their respective nations. The presence of naturalized players can dilute this sense of national identity and representation. In many international competitions, including the Olympics, the use of naturalized players has been a common practice. While adapting to this trend aligns the SEA Games with global sporting norms, it is probably still essential to find a balance that takes into consideration the perspectives of both sides. Establishing eligibility criteria and limitations on the number of naturalized players in a team could be a potential solution. This would allow for the participation of naturalized players while ensuring that local athletes continue to have ample opportunities to represent their country and develop their skills. Whether the presence of naturalized players has turned the SEA Games into a “sham” depends on individual viewpoints. It is therefore crucial for sports authorities to strike a balance between the inclusion of naturalized players and providing opportunities for local talents which we believe is key to maintaining the spirit and relevance of the SEA Games. e-mail:mannyangeles27@gmail.com The post The gold that mattered most appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
The Londoner Macao marks reopening of the city
The former Sands Cotai Central celebrates its rebirth as The Londoner Macao. Sands China Ltd. will formally launch its rebranded integrated resort, The Londoner® Macao, with a grand celebration on 25 May to be attended by David Beckham, the British soccer icon and Sands Resorts Macao global ambassador. With a theme of “The Journey Begins,” the gala event looks to the future as Sands China Ltd. renews its commitment to Macao through a new 10-year gaming concession. The Londoner Macao is comprised of five hotels — including all-suite namesake flagship, The Londoner Hotel. The integrated resort has been undergoing a rebranding process since 2021. “Now that pandemic restrictions have eased, we are delighted to finally give The Londoner Macao the unveiling it deserves and share its fabulous transformation with the world,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. “At the same time, we’re also celebrating the opportunity we’ve been given over the next 10 years by the Macao SAR government to help the city evolve into a fully diversified, global tourism hub.” [caption id="attachment_131546" align="aligncenter" width="525"] The hotel will have a British design aesthetic.[/caption] Integrated resort The integrated resort’s hotels offer nearly 6,000 rooms in total, complemented by three spas, four health clubs, more than 20 dining options, boutiques from 150 world-renowned brands and state- of-the-art conference facilities, including the new 6,000-seat The Londoner Arena. The refurbishments and additions have cost approximately $2 billion. Uniting much of the lavish complex is a British design aesthetic that conveys both prestige and playfulness. Designers have been inspired by various aspects of English style — from historic architecture and gentleman’s clubs to royal tradition and the Cool Britannia chic of a global Britain — creating an architectural (and highly Instagrammable) masterpiece even by Macao standards. “We feel so proud to be able to finally celebrate The Londoner Macao, one of the most ambitious hospitality projects in Macao to date and welcome guests from all over the world to experience this truly one-of-a-kind property,” said Dr. Wong. Describing the complex as “a tribute to the beauty and history of London,” he said the resort would “delight visitors with its large-scale reproductions, surprising experiences, spectacular dining and incredible attention to detail.” The post The Londoner Macao marks reopening of the city appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
DA to beef up monitoring on farming, fishing
The Department of Agriculture will intensify data-gathering on agriculture, fishing, and forestry as it creates ways to boost production, which declined to 8.9 percent share of the national income last year from 9.6 percent in 2021, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. “Our monitoring system was developed so we can assess the relevance of our interventions and their accessibility to our farmers and fisherfolks,” Agriculture Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban said Friday. He added, “The stories of farmers and fisherfolks on the effects of the various government support programs serve as our inspiration to improve our services.” Panganiban said agricultural production slowed last year as “the Philippine agricultural sector was bombarded by the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, agricultural pests and diseases, inflation, and many more.” In the fourth quarter last year, the lowest production levels were seen in corn which was down by 7 percent, fish by 3 percent and rice by 2.5 percent, according to the statistics authority. However, government aid for more than half of all agricultural sectors expanded, mostly for the sugarcane sector, followed by the tobacco and pineapple sectors. In celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolks' Month every May, Panganiban also vowed the agriculture department will also adopt technologies to boost production for domestic and foreign consumption. “This is the vision of the government for a modernized agriculture to support the Philippine economy that is dynamic, advanced, and internationally competitive.” Government data show 1.178 million rice farmers have benefited from the Rice Farmers Financial Assistance worth P5.8 billion as of last month, while a total of 19,486 piglets were distributed to over 8,000 hog raisers who were affected by the persisting African Swine Fever. Last Friday, the agriculture department also recognized 17 halal and organic agriculture enterprises for their economic contribution. Citing global data, the department says the Halal industry can grow from $1.6 billion to $2.2 billion by 2030. In the Philippines, at least 11 percent of its Muslim population eats Halal foods. Meanwhile, data from the National Organic Agriculture Board show at least 5 percent of the country’s agricultural land is used for organic farming. Pinoys among those evacuated as Sudan fighting enters 2nd week
Sudan's Rapid Support Forces said Sunday it had "coordinated with" American troops to evacuate Washington's embassy in the country, where fighting between the paramilitary group and the army entered a second week following a brief lull. More than 150 people from various nations had already reached the safety of Saudi Arabia in the first announced evacuation of civilians. Foreign countries have said they are preparing for the potential evacuation of thousands more of their nationals, even though Sudan's main airport remains closed. "The Rapid Support Forces Command has coordinated with the U.S Forces Mission consisting of 6 aircraft, for evacuating diplomats and their families on Sunday morning," said a tweet by the heavily armed paramilitary group. The RSF pledged "full cooperation with all diplomatic missions, and providing all necessary means of protection, and ensuring their safe return to their countries". The group previously said it was ready to "partially" open "all airports" in Sudan to evacuate foreign citizens. It was not possible to verify which airports the RSF controls. Fighting has left hundreds dead and thousands wounded, while survivors cope with shortages of electricity and food. On Saturday, Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry announced the "safe arrival" of 91 of its citizens along with nationals from Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Canada and Burkina Faso. As the kingdom's naval forces transported the civilians, including diplomats and international officials, across the Red Sea from Port Sudan to Jeddah, fighting resumed in Sudan's capital Khartoum after a temporary truce saw gunfire momentarily die down on Friday, the first day of Eid al-Fitr. Eid is normally a major celebration for Sudanese marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. This year it is marked by fear, grief and hunger. Earlier on Saturday, Sudan's army said its chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan had received calls from leaders of multiple countries to "facilitate and guarantee safety for evacuating citizens and diplomatic missions". It noted that the evacuations were expected to begin "in the coming hours", adding that the US, Britain, France and China were planning to airlift their nationals out of Khartoum using military planes. Burhan told Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya TV that the army was in control of "all airports, except for Khartoum airport" and one in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur. Urban warfare began on 15 April between forces loyal to Burhan and those of his deputy-turned-rival Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. Daglo commands the RSF, which emerged from the Janjaweed fighters unleashed in Darfur by former strongman Omar al-Bashir, drawing accusations of war crimes. The former allies seized power in a 2021 coup but later fell out in a bitter power struggle. On Saturday morning, heavy gunfire, loud explosions and fighter jets were heard in many parts of the capital, according to witnesses. The army announced Friday agreement to a three-day ceasefire. Daglo said in a statement he had "discussed the current crisis" with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and was "focused on the humanitarian truce, safe passages, and protecting humanitarian workers". Five humanitarians, including four from UN-linked agencies, have so far been killed. Two 24-hour ceasefires announced earlier in the week were also ignored. In Khartoum, a city of five million people, the conflict has left terrified civilians sheltering inside their homes. Many have ventured out only to get urgent food supplies -- stocks of which are dwindling -- or to flee the city. While Khartoum has seen some of the fiercest battles, they have occurred across the country. Late Friday, the army accused the RSF of attacks in the capital's twin city of Omdurman where they released "a large number of inmates" from a prison, accusations the group denies. Battles have raged in Darfur, where Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in the city of El Fasher said their medics had been "overwhelmed" by the number of patients with gunshot wounds, many of them children. More plans are being made to evacuate foreigners, with South Korea and Japan deploying forces to nearby countries, and the European Union weighing a similar move. The German ministers of defence and foreign affairs held a crisis meeting Saturday on a possible evacuation, after three military transport planes had to turn back Wednesday, according to German weekly Der Spiegel. The World Health Organization (WHO) said 413 people had been killed and 3,551 wounded in the fighting across Sudan, but the actual death toll is thought to be higher. More than two-thirds of hospitals in Khartoum and neighbouring states are now "out of service", and at least four hospitals in North Kordofan state were shelled, the doctors' union said. The World Food Programme said the violence could plunge millions more into hunger in a country where one-third of the population needs aid. Burhan and Daglo's dispute centred on the planned integration of the RSF into the regular army, a key condition for a deal aimed at restoring Sudan's democratic transition after the military toppled Bashir in April 2019 following mass citizen protests. In October 2021, Burhan and Daglo joined forces to oust a civilian government installed after Bashir's downfall. Daglo now says the coup was a "mistake", while Burhan believes it was "necessary" to include more groups into politics. Lionel Richie, Katy Perry to play Charles coronation show
Take That, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Andrea Bocelli will be among those performing at a concert to mark King Charles III's coronation, the BBC said on Friday. A televised Coronation Concert is being held in the grounds of Windsor Castle, west of London, on May 7 -- the day after Charles is officially crowned king. BBC chief content officer Charlotte Moore said the coronation was a "once-in-a-generation occasion" and called the concert line-up "world-class". But recent reports have said that a number of big-name stars have turned down the gig, including Adele, Elton John, Harry Styles and the Spice Girls. They are said to have declined because of scheduling clashes or touring commitments. But the Mail on Sunday said singer Kylie Minogue had refused given increased republican sentiment in her native Australia, where Charles is also king. Some 20,000 members of the public and invited guests are set to attend in person, with the live event also broadcast on radio and online. Other confirmed performers in the lineup include opera star Bryn Terfel, the singer-songwriter Freya Ridings and composer-producer Alexis Ffrench. Perry -- who performed for US President Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021 -- as well as Take That and Richie all have links to Charles's charitable foundations. Richie, who at 73 is just a year younger than the king, said the concert would be an "honor and a celebration". Bocelli has previously performed for Charles's mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September last year aged 96. He was among a star-studded lineup headlined by Diana Ross for the late monarch's Platinum Jubilee concert marking her 70th year on the throne last June. Further names for the Coronation Concert will be announced in due course, the BBC said. Despite the coronation being the first since 1953 and an event most Britons alive have never witnessed, public interest currently appears lacking. Coronation coins have been minted, special chinaware produced and even a crown emoji made to mark the occasion at Westminster Abbey. But a YouGov poll of more than 3,000 people published Friday indicated that just over a third (35 percent) "do not care very much" about the event. Just under a third (29 percent) said they "do not care at all", with apathy greatest among younger age groups. About a quarter (24 percent) of all respondents said they cared "a fair amount" and only about one in 10 people (nine percent) said they cared "a great deal". Nonetheless, 46 percent of Britons said they would likely watch or take part in celebrations, including street parties and community lunches on May 8, which has been declared a public holiday. Preparations were ongoing for the solemn religious ceremony, whose roots date back more than a millennium, and the guest list finalized. Charles's younger son Prince Harry is set to attend, despite his public criticisms of the royal family since moving to the United States in early 2020. The former British army captain's actress wife, Meghan, however, will remain in California with their two young children.
