Google’s new phone to run AI on-device
Google on Wednesday said its latest premium-priced Pixel phone would have powerful generative AI models running independently on the device, as the search engine giant seeks to lure buyers away from the latest iPhone. The announcement by Google caps the autumn release season for big tech hardware that saw Apple unveil the iPhone 15 series and Meta officially launch its latest VR headset. Running on a powerful chip, Google's Pixel 8 Pro would carry out certain AI functions on the device itself instead of relying on transfers from cloud data centers that require heavy bandwidth. At a launch event in New York, Rick Osterloh, SVP of devices and services at Google, said that the company's AI teams had figured out how to "distill" AI models "into a version efficient enough to run on our flagship Pixel." This would greatly enhance existing AI tools on Pixel phones, such as removing blemishes or unwanted intrusions in photographs. Later this on-device ability would expand to other AI features, Osterloh said. Pixel phones would also begin testing an AI-amped assistant that would bring many of the abilities of Google's ChatGPT-style Bard onto the phone. In time, the company said the AI assistant would provide real-time help such as choosing the best path for a hike, sifting through emails or planning a birthday party. This would be handled through either spoken word, on-screen prompts or by using images, in a similar way that the more powerful chatbots work already. "Assistant with Bard combines personalized help with reasoning and genitive capabilities," said Monika Gupta, vice president of product management at Google. Big tech's hardware release season has featured many promises of AI enhancements, including Amazon teasing an upgrade of its Alexa voice assistant to function in a more human-like and "smart" fashion. As with the other announcements, Google said that many of these AI powers were at an early phase and would be enhanced gradually. Google caught some by surprise with news that the Pixel 8 Pro would also come equipped with a temperature reader, with approval pending from US regulators to use it for measuring body temperature. Veteran broadcast journalist Mike Enriquez dies at 71
Award-winning television and radio newscaster and host Mike Enriquez, has passed on at age 71. This was announced at the closing minutes yesterday of 24 Oras, the primetime newscast on GMA 7 that Enriquez anchored for 19 years. His fellow anchors Mel Tiangco, Vicky Morales and Emil Sumangil couldn’t hide their sadness as they read the network’s statement announcing Enriquez’s passing on 29 August. Enriquez spent a total of 29 years on the GMA Network, as news anchor of 24 Oras and its predecessor Saksi, and as host of the long-running investigative docudrama Imbestigador and head of its regional and radio subsidiaries. He became a household name with his unique brand of delivering the news, which commanded authority but was not too formal, allowing him to inject casual remarks. Famous for the catchphrases “excuse me po” and “hindi namin kayo tatantanan,” his booming newscasting style became material for fond parodies and spoofs. Born Miguel Castro Enriquez on 29 September 1951, the multi-awarded broadcaster began his career as a staff announcer at the Manila Broadcasting Company in 1969. He went on to work as disc jockey, reporter, desk editor, program director and station manager in various stations, including Radio Mindanao Network where he steered to success DWKC 93.9 on FM radio as station manager and DJ. Enriquez left RMN in 1994 and joined GMA in the same year to lead its radio operations, but was soon convinced by his GMA bosses to be a news anchor. He first worked on-cam in the network’s coverage of the 1995 senatorial elections. The veteran radio-TV anchor went on medical leave in December 2021 to undergo kidney transplant. In a previous interview, Enriquez shared that aside from battling diabetes, he also underwent heart bypass surgery in 2018. After his medical hiatus, Enriquez headlined GMA-7’s Eleksyon 2022: The GMA News and Public Affairs’ Election Coverage with fellow GMA News pillars Mel Tiangco, Vicky Morales, Arnold Clavio, Howie Severino and Jessica Soho. Shortly after, he returned to his regular programs on GMA’s flagship AM radio station Super Radyo DZBB 594. Enriquez also hosted Super Balita sa Umaga and Saksi sa Dobol B. In addition to his on-air duties, Enriquez served as RGMA Network Inc. president and GMA Network’s consultant for Radio Operations. Among other awards in his five-decade career, Enriquez won the Most Outstanding Male News Anchor at the De La Salle Araneta University’s Gawad Lasallianeta Awards for four consecutive years. He is survived by his wife Lizabeth “Baby” Yumping. Kathryna Yu-Pimentel’s success recipes: ‘Good partners, location, products, service’
There are no shortcuts to success, says entrepreneur Kathryna Yu-Pimentel. At the start of her career, the self-taught culinary artist was pushed into the extremes while running her now-defunct food services. Humbled by the lessons she’s learned from her initial ventures, she has moved on to team up with other partners for her current businesses and has been reaping in it with the Singaporean casual dining restaurant chain Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice and Alpina Lounge and Wellness. Entrepreneurship came naturally to Kathryna who started earning money in her elementary and high school days by making and selling polvoron and cookies. In college, she supplied 500 packed cookies a week to a classmate who owned a coffee cart in the school. After graduation, they became suppliers to lobby coffee shops and school canteens. Likewise, she ran her own catering business and an Italian restaurant. Shifted careers Kathryna shifted careers when she worked at the law firm of her future husband Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and at the Senate office upon his election. Six years ago, she came upon Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice restaurant while on a trip to Singapore. Its long name distinguishes itself from Tiong Bahru, Singapore’s oldest neighborhood and tourist destination. Located in the hawkers’ area, the restaurant attracted long queues of office workers. The come-on was the bite-size pieces of succulent Hainanese chicken on fragrant turmeric rice with ginger, chili and hoisin sauces. “It was a hearty meal yet you didn’t feel the guilt because the chicken was not fried,” says Kathryna. Chicken rice Whenever she visited in Singapore, she kept returning to Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice. In 2019, Kathryna and several partners, including the Singaporean owner established the local corporation, Tiong Bahru Philippines, which aims owns and manage its restaurants here. The restaurant opened at MET Live Mall in Pasay City followed by a branch at Easton Place in Makati. Lockdowns notwithstanding, the businesses flourished with its healthy offerings and efficient delivery. The famous chicken rice dish clicked because it offered top quality and value for money for less than P300 for a solo serving. Some customers kept ordering daily. Post-pandemic, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice now has seven outlets in the metropolis. The flagship restaurant was recently inaugurated at the Eastwood Mall. The eighth branch is slated to open at the Greenhills Shopping Center later in the year. Aside from the poached and roasted chickens, with their tender and juicy meat, the restaurant chain is also known for its tofu appetizer with sweet chili sauce, the sausage-like kikiam Singapore, and the beef and fish head curries. Cooked on-site A major advantage is that the food is cooked on-site to guarantee freshness. Before each restaurant opening, the Singaporean principal, Andrew Koh, trains the kitchen staff to ensure authenticity in taste. Customers seek fresh taste and healthy meals at pocket-friendly prices. Kathryna attributes Tiong Bahru’s success to her harmonious relationship with her partners. The investors, who come from diverse fields, offer their expertise. Kathryna and two other partners are foodies who conduct taste tests and visit the different branches to check consistency in quality. She adds that the location in malls and high-traffic areas help bring in customers. Meanwhile, Alpina Lounge and Wellness, a nail and brow salon cum spa, at Uptown Parade in Taguig City has been thriving. Kathryna is joined by her sister, Stephanie Yu Chua and Russian brow expert Maria Zhukova, as managing partners in this business. Aside from offering minimally invasive services, specialized blood tests and massages, Alpina doubles as a party place at night. Business is flourishing because it uses top quality machines and products executed by professionals who follow international standards in nail art, semi-permanent makeup and aesthetic procedures. Kathryna says her earlier ventures taught her to be resilient. Maturity, location and timing are important to success. Learning from her lessons, she follows the classic recipe for success, that is: “Good partners, good location, good products and good service.” The post Kathryna Yu-Pimentel’s success recipes: ‘Good partners, location, products, service’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
