Tamayo, Abadiano complete ‘strongest’ Batang Gilas ever

The Philippine national basketball team is nothing but positive as it heads to Argentina for the FIBA Under-17 World Cup. “Hindi tayo pupunta dun na ‘di tayo tiwala na kaya nating manalo,” Batang Gilas assistant coach Josh Reyes said in their send-off dinner on Monday in Ortigas. The Filipinos booked a ticket to Worlds after reaching the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship. That team featured talented tower Kai Sotto, court general Forthsky Padrigao, streaky shooter Terrence Fortea, rim protector Raven Cortez, and scoring guard RC Calimag After that tournament, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas was nothing but proud that the boys have accomplished their mission. Now, Batang Gilas has also added heady guard Gerry Abadiano and versatile big Carl Tamayo. That is exactly why Batang Gilas is nothing but positive even as it has been grouped with eighth-ranked host Argentina, 10th-ranked Croatia, and seventh-ranked France. “This is the strongest U17 team that the country has produced. We’re very excited kasi ‘di na maliit ang Pilipinas,” Ronald Mascarinas, president of team backer Chooks-to-Go shared. Indeed, the country, ranked 34th in the world, now boasts of five players listed at or higher than 6-foot-5. Of course, fronting the effort is UAAP champion and Finals MVP Sotto. And for him, there is no doubt that the Philippines could go far in the Worlds. “Naniniwala ako sa team ko na kahit anong mangyari, nasa likod ko sila. Ako rin, lagi akong nandito para sa kanila,” he said. Rounding out Batang Gilas are Yukien Andrada, King Balaga, Kyle Bautista, Geo Chiu, Mac Guadana, Rafael Go, and Joshua Lazaro. They will be coached by UAAP Juniors champion coach Mike Oliver alongside Reyes and Gilbert Lao. They fly to Argentina on Thursday for the tournament running from June 30 to July 8. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Delos Santos to decide on final pool lineup

National women’s volleyball team head coach Shaq Delos Santos and his coaching staff will deliberate on Thursday the players that will compose the 20-woman pool lineup. Delos Santos conducted the national team hopefuls first training session led by Alyssa Valdez and Jia Morado. Also in attendance were Jaja Santiago, Aby Maraño, Maika Ortiz, Rhea Dimaculangan, CJ Rosario, Denden Lazaro, Mika Reyes, Mylene Paat, Ces Molina, Rebecca Rivera, and Myla Pablo, who left early to train with her club team Pocari Sweat. Delos Santos and his assistants Kungfu Reyes and Bryan Esquibel are expected to come up with a final list on Friday at the latest.   “Di kami makakapagbigay ng final time kung ngayon or bukas (ang lineup). Pero para sa amin kailangan naming pagusapang mabuti,” said Delos Santos, who replaced Ramil De Jesus as head coach after the multi-titled mentor resigned from his post just two months after his appointment. Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. gave Delos Santos the freehand to choose the number of players that will compose the pool. “Usapan kung papayagan 20 or 18 kung saan kami aabutin,” said Delos Santos, who steered Petron to the 2018 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix title last month.    From the 20-woman pool, Delos Santos will trim it down to 14 (12 regular and two reserves), which will be the country’s official entry to the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games in August.    “Mahirap kung sa mahirap (mamili) kasi ang timeline namin very short,” said Delos Santos. “Pero kahit papaano naman sanay kaming humarap sa mga ganyang situation basta guided kami ng mga boss namin kagaya ni (LVPI vice president) Peter Cayco.” The national squad will also see action in the AVC Asia Cup in Thailand in September and in the 2019 Manila Southeast Asian Games.   ---  Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

RDJ resigned because of conflict of schedule -- Cayco

Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. cited that conflict of schedule was the main reason of De La Salle University head coach Ramil De Jesus for stepping down from his post as the national women’s team mentor. Shaq Delos Santos was tapped by the country’s volleyball governing body as replacement for De Jesus in forming and handling the Nationals that will see action in two major tournaments this year and in the 2019 Manila Southeast Asian Games.      University of Sto. Tomas coach Kungfu Reyes and Bryan Esquibel of Letran men’s team were appointed as Delos Santos’ assistants. “Apparently, coach Ramil has his own reasons, one of them I think is yung kanyang commitment, yung schedule,” said LVPI vice president Peter Cayco on Tuesday during the national pool meeting held at the Arellano University-Legarda Gym. The 11-time UAAP champion coach is currently calling the shots for DLSU, F2 Logistics and the Baby Spikers – DLSU’s pool of recruits. “Kasi he is now coaching three teams. I respect his decision and we have to move on and I’m very thankful to Shaq na at a short notice,” added Cayco. “Sa selection committee kasi ng LVPI, we met, and it was unanimous na si Coach Shaq. So we got Coach Shaq. We wanted representation from the collegiate so kinuha naming si coach Kungfu from the UAAP and si coach Bryan from the NCAA to be his assistants.” LVPI named De Jesus as head coach last April where he conducted two tryouts for national team hopefuls. But after two months, the mentor, who steered the Filipinas to a bronze medal finish in the Manila SEA Games in 2015, suddenly resigned. “Actually before they left for Hong Kong, I think two weeks ago (siya nagsabi). We met in a party hosted by FilOil for the La Salle team. I told him, “Coach usap tayo” tapos he smiled tapos si Benson Bocboc na ang nag-inform sa amin na pass na muna sila,” Cayco said. “I mean I respect his decision kung yun ang decision nya, mahirap naman na pilitin natin.” “Baka nga mapabayaan niya (ang team) because of his schedule. In fairness naman kay Coach Ramil nagsabi naman siya through I think Mr. (Popoy) Juico. To me personally, hindi but it was relayed to me,” the LVPI official added. LVPI already submitted to the Philippine Sports Commission the names for the 24 slots for the entry by numbers. Delos Santos is expected to give the name of the players in that 24-player list by June 10. From that 24-player list, Delos Santos will choose 12 players who will represent the country in the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games in August and in the AVC Asia Cup the following month.       “We have to move on na kasi we’re short of time na eh. So we met and we decided na si coach Shaq nga so here we are now,” said Cayco.       --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Hell hath no fury like the Queen of All Media scorned. Kris Aquino went on a tirade against ex-husband James Yap over the weekend after his birthday message to Bimby irked Aquino. UAAP Volleyball: Bernadeth Pons: Probinsyana with a Superstar Soul

In a time where gadgets have pretty much taken over the lives of majority of the world’s population, Bernadeth Pons prefers to keep things simple. Instead of swiping her phone for the latest news on Twitter or organizing her feed on Instagram, FEU’s Team Captain and graduate of Financial Management would rather spend time inside the athlete’s dormitory to sleep. While that sounds boring, the 21-year old Pons reasons that she needs all the energy she can get to complete her Master’s degree in Business Administration and perform at the highest level in her final season in the UAAP. The 5’7” open spiker is currently the fourth best scorer in the league averaging 15.2 points per match. She is also ranked third in both digging and receiving. Because of her all-around brilliance, there is a fairly good amount of fans on social media who have been campaigning for Pons to be named MVP of Season 80. But, of course, Pons is oblivious to that. In fact, she didn’t even know that she was included in the 34-player wish list of new National Team Head Coach Ramil de Jesus. It took a text message from her younger sister, Melody, who lives in their hometown of Talisay, Negros Occidental for Pons to learn about the development. “Ha? Saan galing yan?” was her honest reply. To Pons, playing for the national team goes beyond her wildest dreams. And while she feels very much honored to have her name considered for a spot, Pons says her current focus is with FEU. After all, it was the school that provided her with a means to fulfill her goals and make her parents proud. From Softball to Volleyball Pons was born in Malolos, Bulacan where her father, Roberto and mother, Maryjen met. A year after her birth, the family moved to Talisay where Roberto started playing baseball recreationally. When his eldest daughter grew big enough to play, she also took a liking to the sport. Pons would even join the boys play catch during her elementary days at Efigenio-Enrica Lizares Memorial School. Unfortunately, there was no softball team for Pons to try-out for. That’s when her classmate, Allen Joy Esponilia invited her to try-out for the volleyball team. “Nung una, sobrang hirap kasi wala talaga akong alam eh. Kahit dig, dig lang, kung saan-saan pumupunta. Nahihiya ako sa ka-partner ko kasi syempre, alam na niya yung basics ng volleyball. Naiiyak na nga ako kasi palagi nalang tumatalsik,” recalled Pons, who was 10 years old at the time. But, the challenge of excelling at a sport where she had no background in challenged the young Pons. Eventually, she learned how to dig up powerful spikes and became a libero. In the fifth grade, she experienced her first major competition by participating in the Palarong Pambansa held in Palawan and representing Region 6 – Western Visayas where she teamed up with Kim Gequillana and Ayel Estraňero. It was the first of five Palarong Pambansa events she would participate in. In those competitions, Pons played against numerous future UAAP stars like Jia Morado, Desiree Cheng, Majoy Baron, Jhoana Maraguinot and a powerhouse Region 7 – Central Visayas squad that featured Sisi Rondina, Dimdim Pacres, Rica Rivera and CJ Saga. Leap of Faith As she got older, Pons began developing her spiking prowess and caught the eye of the legendary Roger Gorayeb, who wanted to bring her to San Sebastian College-Recoletos. But, she was reluctant to leave home. “Wala akong idea about life dito sa Manila. So, hindi ko alam kung tutuloy ba ako or hindi. Dumating sa point na nag-decide kami ng Papa ko na doon nalang sa amin ako mag college,” explained Pons. During her final year in high school in 2013, then FEU Head Coach Shaq delos Santos went to the Regional Meet in Roxas City, Capiz to recruit the reluctant Pons. Delos Santos was persistent in convincing her to come and be a part of his plan to revive the volleyball program of the university. The free education, food and accessibility to the training facilities finally convinced Pons to take a leap of faith.   “Naisip ko, pag doon ako sa probinsya, mamamasahe ako every day, mabigat din sa parents ko. So, yun talaga yung sabi ko, ‘O-oo na ako’. Nag-decide ako na mag go-go na ako sa Maynila,” recalled Pons. For someone who never imagined leaving her hometown, Pons didn’t have any trouble making her mark in the UAAP as she immediately led the Lady Tamaraws in scoring (11.8 points per match) as a rookie. She would become FEU’s leading scorer in each of her UAAP stints which includes Final Four appearances in the past three seasons. Last Stretch Now that Pons is approaching the last stretch of her collegiate career and with FEU in a good position to attain a twice-to-beat advantage in the post-season for the first time since 2009, she is more focused than ever on the task at hand. Should the Lady Tamaraws beat NU in their last elimination round game on Sunday and if Ateneo loses to La Salle, FEU will enter the Final Four as the number two ranked team. But, Pons knows it won’t be easy as the Lady Bulldogs will be out for redemption. “Kami kasi yung unang tumalo sa kanila sa first round. So, palagi namin rine-remind yung bawat isa na yung NU, pipilitin nilang bumawi sa atin. Tapos sila, nothing to lose kasi kahit ano mangyari, number four na sila. Eh tayo, may hinahabol tayo na number two. Hindi puwedeng magpabaya tayo kasi NU pa rin yan. Lalaban at lalaban yan,” shared Pons. It’s been a decade since FEU last won the UAAP Women’s Volleyball title. While Pons has already achieved her initial goal of earning a college degree, she still has that burning desire to give back to the school that gave her the opportunity to help her family and leave a lasting legacy in the process. “Gusto ko maalala nila ako bilang isa sa mga nakapagbalik ng crown sa FEU. Sobrang tagal nang nawala ang FEU sa championship. Yun yung gusto namin ibalik ulit,” declared Pons. All Pons ever wanted was to ease the burden on her parents by graduating from school. The game of volleyball has given her a means to accomplish that and so much more. She’s become one of the UAAP’s brightest stars and may wear the colors of the Philippine flag one day. But, no matter what happens, she will always be that same humble girl from Talisay, inspiring countless others like her to be brave and go for great. Catch Bernadeth Pons and the FEU Tamaraws take on the NU Bulldogs on April 15, Sunday, 12 noon LIVE on S+A, S+A HD, Liga, Liga HD and via livestream......»»

Petron begins quest for redemption

Games Saturday: (Ynares Sports Center) 2:00 p.m. -- Generika-Ayala vs Foton 4:00 p.m. –- Sta. Lucia vs Petron   Powerhouse Petron takes the first step back to the crown when it clashes with a souped-up Sta. Lucia Realty squad to fire off the 2018 Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix Saturday at the Ynares Center. Battle starts at 4:00 p.m. with the Blaze Spikers looking to come up with a roaring start in a bid to finally reclaim the elusive title. Foton and Generika-Ayala will also gun for their first victory when they clash in the 2:00 p.m. first game. Although the much-anticipated import-flavored conference already gets underway with its first two matches, it will have the formal opening ceremonies at the Sta. Rosa City Sports Complex on Feb. 24 where all eight teams together with their imports, team captains and head coaches featured in the traditional parade of colors. After losing in the finals for three straight years, the Blaze Spikers will be marching in this year’s Grand Prix with fire in their eyes, hoping to finally conquer the title in what is billed as the most prestigious, most competitive women’s volleyball tourney in the country. American spikers Lindsay Stalzer and Hillary Hurley and  Japanese libero Yuri Fukuda will be back to power the Blaze Spikers, who will parade the same core of Mika Reyes, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Frances Molina and Rhea Dimaculangan. The only additions, however, are middle blocker Luth Malaluan, setter Angelica Legacion and libero Pia Gaiser, who will be making her PSL debut after a suffering knee injury in her final playing year for University of the Philippines in the UAAP. “We will do our best to step up this year,” said Delos Santos, whose wards were on the verge of winning the title before completely fading against a tough F2 Logistics side in the best-of-three finals showdown of the Grand Prix last year. “Our goal is to finally win the title this year. We haven’t won the Grand Prix crown since 2014 and I can say that we’re all hungry and ready to win.” But emerging victorious in the first game of the season will not be easy for Petron. The Blaze Spikers will be up against the Lady Realtors, who will be bannered by head coach George Pascua, the architect of Petron’s clean sweep of the All-Filipino Conference in 2015. Pascua, who steered Cignal to the Invitational Conference title before joining Sta. Lucia, will be parading a mix of seasoned campaigners and young guns together with proven imports Marisa Field and Kristen Moncks of Canada and Bohdana Anisova of Ukraine. Veterans Rubie de Leon and Michelle Laborte were tapped to serve as mentors to rising stars Rebecca Rivera, MJ Philips, Pamela Lastimosa and Jonah Sabete. “We are a young team searching for identity. So having these two veterans on the team will surely boost the morale of the young players inside and outside the playing court,” said Pascua, who is coming in as Sta. Lucia’s fourth mentor after Sammy Acaylar, Michael Carino and Jerry Yee.  .....»»

Out of shape during the first window when the Philippins challenged the Japanese and hosted Chinese Taipei at home, Blatche has been working out in China where he plays for the Xinjian Flying Tigers. For the second window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, the naturalized Filipino showed in great shape and is ready to go. "I just worked out twice a day the whole time in China preparing for this," Blatche said Tuesday after practice. "The last time I was here, the last two games, I was way out of shape and I couldn't perform the way I wanted to and it bothered me and I was very frustrated and I dedicated myself to this window," he added. Whil Blatche is in better shape now compared to last time, Gilas head coach Chot Reyes says that his big man still has a lot to work on between no and next week when the national team takes on Australia in Melbourne. "Well, I liked his movement. You could see by the way he’s shooting the ball and his offense that he’s slowly getting in shape. But I think he still has to improve some more his ... he has to get his game legs under him, because before he came here, he was with his team in China but he was on the reserve list so he wasn’t really playing games," Reyes said of Blatche. "He was continuously practicing but he’s not in real game shape. We have a week before the Australia game to get him back into that. But the problem is we’re not able to play actual games, and the only way to get in game shape is to play actual games. That’s the dilemma that we’re facing," he added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

This is not your kuya s Gilas Pilipinas

Basketball continues to evolve and the Philippine brand is not exempted from it. With the release of the initial #23for23 pool for the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup co-hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, one thing is for sure: Gilas Pilipinas will look a whole lot different in 2023 compared to the one that's currently trying to qualify for the 2019 World Cup. The future Gilas will still have a ton of shooters since that's one of the national team's greatest strengths but the future Gilas will also have a higher ceiling than any other Philippine team ever assembled ever. Seriously, one quick look at the initial #23for23 list and you'll see 10 players listed at least 6'6". Five of them are listed at least 6'8". Kai Sotto is already a legit seven footer at 15 while AJ Edu is an ultra-athletic forward that stands 6'11". The wings and guard spots are also filled with guys who are listed at 6'4". Guys like Kobe Paras, Thirdy Ravena, and even CJ Perez all have decent size to play at those positions. In the current #23for23 list, the shortest player is Ateneo's Matt Nieto at 5'10". Oh and almost all of the players in that list, including the supposed towers and anchors of the team, can shoot from the outside. It's the time of the basketball unicorn and it's about time the Philippines caught up. "We have to start somewhere," head coach Chot Reyes on putting up his list of players for 2023. "That's our dream for Philippine basketball for the longest time. Now we're starting that with that vision in mind, to have tall players who can still play, run, and shoot at the same time," he added. Following Gilas' first practice for 2018 Monday, it appears that the future can live up to potential. The room for development is there of course but the foundation seems solid for now. "Somebody was mentioning in the shooting drills na lahat nakaka-shoot ah. That's the reason why they're here," Reyes said. "They were all chosen for their shooting ability and that's what we're looking for. The ones that can shoot the long ball and still have the height," he added.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
