Stakeholders work on cross-sectoral climate action plan
The Climate Change Commission concluded its second National Adaptation Plan multi-stakeholder consultation on Tuesday last week as part of efforts to formulate a comprehensive and effective NAP through the contributions of diverse stakeholders. The consultation engaged various stakeholders from the national and local government, academic and scientific institutions, civil society, private sector and development sector to share relevant experience and expertise to the NAP development process. In his speech, CCC Vice Chairperson and Executive Director Robert E.A. Borje underscored the importance of crafting a science-based, evidence-based and needs-based NAP, to strengthen the adaptive capacities of all Filipinos, particularly those in the most vulnerable sectors of society. “It's not only important that we have our experience and expertise at the table, it is also vital to make this plan genuine, needs-based, and a product of multi-stakeholder collaboration. Consultation is important because we need to make sure that the process reflects the different components of our society,” Borje said. The consultation included presentations on the National Adaptation Plan development, climate risk assessment and adaptation priorities. Breakout sessions delved into adaptation priorities and key enablers, covering critical sectors such as food security, agriculture, water resources, governance, stakeholder engagement, technology, financing and capacity building. “We hope that the inputs we receive from you today will not only significantly help us to develop a fit-for-purpose climate risk management for the country, but will also highlight the importance of collective action and a shared commitment to building the Filipinos’ resilience and adapting mechanism to climate change,” said CCC Commissioner Rachel Anne S. Herrera. The series of multi-stakeholder consultations are organized with the support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the British Embassy Manila. The first consultation took place virtually on 8 August 2023, bringing together representatives from various organizations to engage in discussions and contribute valuable insights on building a climate-smart and climate-resilient country. Top French photo fest shows unseen work by US legend Saul Leiter
A host of never before seen work by the late great US artist Saul Leiter is being showcased at one of the world's biggest photography festivals in France. Almost all of the paintings and drawings in the major Saul Leiter show at the "Rencontres d'Arles" festival in the southern French city have never been shown before. A former fashion photographer, Leiter -- who died in 2013 -- was a leading light of the New York school of photography of the 1940s and 1950s that included Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, and Robert Frank. Curator Anne Morin called him "one of the 20th century's most fascinating artist-photographers". "Everything is a matter of balance, exactitude, and humility in the works of this man, who nonetheless accorded great importance to imperfection," she said. In a short film presented at the show, Leiter said "You don't have to apologize" for looking for beauty. While summer temperatures outside soared well above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), the mercury hovered at around 20C in an underground exhibition space called the "cryptoportiques" where merchants once stored their wares in Roman times. Fittingly, it is hosting images of prehistoric caves at Arcy-sur-Cure in central France taken by French photographer Juliette Agnel. Drops of water occasionally oozed into the cryptoportiques, bringing to life the humidity pictured in the caves. The photos had to be covered with a fine film to protect them from the moist conditions, festival director Christoph Wiesner told AFP. Agnel illuminates only some parts of the caves in her photos, which show imaginary creatures and play on light and darkness in the manner of Old Masters like Rembrandt and Goya. The work "explores extreme environments, whose unsettling beauty provokes senses of wonder and feelings of the sublime", wrote curator Marta Ponsa. Scandinavian sisterhood In a nearby centuries-old cloister, the Camargue, France's largest wetland located next to Arles between the Rhone River and the Mediterranean, takes pride of place in an exhibition by France's Eva Nielsen with Marianne Derrien. "Insolare" captures the Camargue's reeds, marshes, the action of salt on the land, agricultural activity, and local architecture in paintings, silk-screen prints, and photography. Wiesner said the Camargue was "particularly exposed" to climate change, with Nielsen describing the location as "at once wild and fashioned by man". The sweltering temperatures of southern France take a dive into the chillier climes of Scandinavia with the exposition "Sosterskap" ("Sisterhood"), which highlights work by 18 women photographers who explore the welfare state from a feminist perspective. Fathers on paternity leave caring for their children, handcuffed women looking towards the future, and women of immigrant backgrounds, the latter by Nairobi-born Sweden-based artist Ikram Abdulkadir, feature in the displays. The curators highlighted the feeling of sisterhood in the work by young Finn Emma Sarpaniemi, whose self-portrait was selected as the festival's banner photo. Her portraits of groups of women in playful poses "embody a sense of togetherness and highlight the importance of fostering strong connections with those around us", they wrote. The festival with its 45 exhibitions runs until 24 September. The post Top French photo fest shows unseen work by US legend Saul Leiter appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Voltes V: Legacy is a homage to childhood long gone
Only at the end of Voltes V: Legacy’s second episode does one finally get to hear that old familiar end theme: “Chichi Wo Motomete” which means searching for father. There is a lot of pathos in that song – a nice touch on the instrumental version, by the way – playing as the characters are shown like you’re rifling through a scrapbook from your youth. For somebody who watched the original back in the late 70s (it was created in 1978 and probably released here a year after), watching GMA Network’s recreation is like revisiting the old neighborhood you grew up in. So you reserve judgment for the things they did differently here and there. Change is inevitable all these years, after all. But why did they have to put the “filler episodes” right on the first week? Episodes that introduced characters that didn’t play much in the original but would probably help the network extend the series and employ actors in its stable. It quickly became a teleserye wrapped in the Voltes V universe. When in the original series, drama unfolded as the action heated up. Like when Dr. Mary Ann Armstrong, mom of Steve, Big Bert, and Little Jon, sacrificed herself, harakiri-style, to help Voltes V burst from the Beast Fighter’s chains. Moments before that, Steve was in a dilemma whether to help their wounded mom (and risk the enemy breaching the Big Falcon force field) or continue fighting the lion-headed Baizanga. That kind of big drama, squeezed in between the action, was the subtlety missing in Voltes V: Legacy. At least in the first few episodes. Yet you cut it some slack. Hey, when you walk down memory lane, you look for the good things instead of the bad. As the 5th Dimension said: “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust It'll never be the same.” And some things indeed were different in a good way. Like the graphics. It’s got the Transformers vibe. The effects were a vast improvement, too. It makes you feel proud of how far the local TV has gone in that respect. The main theme song, sung this time by the network’s superbly talented princess Julie Anne San Jose, sounded too thin and lacked the fluffy, reverberating quality of the original. But somehow it worked. It almost brought the same feeling it did back then. I always relate that rousing main theme “Voltes V No Uta” (or song of Voltes V) to Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” every time Manny Pacquiao climbed the ring. Both songs, from the intro alone, tell you that your hero is on his way to save the day. The volt-in sequence is polished to near perfection. It evokes a sense of urgency and anticipation for this 70s kid whose highlight of the week was flashing before him from the screen of a black and white TV. Let’s just hope the writers take liberties from the original in trying to make it better. Because one complaint I had back then was why the Boazanian Empire – depicted as evil and wicked – deployed just one Beast Fighter at a time. Imagine the nemesis that gave Voltes V serious trouble, like Garus the dog or Bonzarus the butterfly. Why not unleash both of them and add a few more for good measure. That would truly achieve Prince Zardoz’s goal of global invasion in one day, as Zuhl wrongfully predicted. But of course that would require a little bit of work and imagination, which is the price you pay when you try to recreate a classic. MLS teams arriving in Florida, tournament schedule set
By ANNE M. PETERSON AP Sports Writer Major League Soccer will open its World Cup-style return tournament in Florida on July 8 with a double header. Orlando City will play expansion Inter Miami in the first match, followed by a game between the Chicago Fire and Nashville SC. The games will be the first time the league has been in action since play was shut down on March 12 because of the coronavirus. The all-Florida opener is a nod to the tournament’s host state. All games will be played without fans in attendance at the sports complex at Walt Disney World. The league released the schedule Wednesday, the first day teams could arrive at the complex near Orlando for the tournament. The San Jose Earthquakes, who were limited in practice by local restrictions, were the first team to travel to Florida. Earthquakes players will be tested upon arrival and then quarantined for 24 hours while awaiting the results. MLS will be the second pro team league in the United States to return to the field. The National Women’s Soccer League will play a tournament in Utah starting Saturday. The 26 MLS teams will be divided into six groups for the opening round of the tournament, which will be played over 16 consecutive days. Group matches will count toward the regular-season standings. Among the highlights of the group stage is a match between the LA Galaxy and LAFC on July 18, and a Canadian rivalry match between the Montreal Impact and Toronto FC on July 15. The defending champion Seattle Sounders open play against the Earthquakes on July 10. Sixteen teams will advance to the knockout round, with the winner of the title game on Aug. 11 earning a spot in the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League. The teams and select staff members will be sequestered during the tournament at two Disney resorts for the duration of the tournament......»»
ON THIS DAY: Philippine volleyball makes SEA Games return
On this day five years ago, the Philippines made its return in the Southeast Asian Games after a 10-year hiatus. The hyped PHI women’s team saw action for the first time in the 2015 Singapore edition of the biennial meet and faced Indonesia in a match that drew headlines even before the actual game at the OCBC Arena Hall 2. In a controversial move, the Philippines filed a protest against Indonesia, demanding a gender test for its powerful spiker Aprilia Manganang because of her masculine appreance and physique. The request was denied by the Singaporean SEA Games organizing committee, citing that the FIVB had already cleared Manganang in a previous FIVB-sanctioned tournament. [Related story: Philippine request for gender test on Indonesian player denied] The protest backfired for the Filipinas as they were given a rude welcome by the Indonesians, particularly Manganang. Manganang let the Filipinas know that no amount of distraction will get her out of her game as she banged in 13 points to power Indonesia to a 25-22, 25-20, 25-14, win. [Related story: PHI protest backfires as inspired Manganang waxed-hot] Alyssa Valdez, who was the Team Philippines' flag-bearer, paced the Pinays with 15 points, but the towering sisters Jaja Santiago and elder sibling Dindin Santiago-Manabat were neutralized and had only seven and two points, respectively. It was a big letdown for the Nationals, who were bracketed in Group B together with Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. That SEA Games edition format assured the top two teams from each bracket at least a bronze medal. However, it did mark the historic return of the Philippines in the SEA Games since winning bronze in the 2005 Manila edition. The Philippine women’s team that time was composed of Valdez, the Santiago sisters, Rhea Dimaculangan, Grethcel Soltones, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Maika Ortiz, Jia Morado, Rachele Anne Daquis, Aby Marano, Bea De Leon and Denden Lazaro under head coach Roger Gorayeb. In men’s play, the Filipinos found early success after beating Malaysia, 20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-19, in their Group A opener. The Philippines was bracketed with Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia. Marck Espejo led that PHI team together with John Vic De Guzman, AJ Pareja, Rex Intal, Josh Villanueva, Kheeno Franco, Edward Camposano, Ysay Marasigan, Sandy Montero, Peter Torres, Timothy Sto. Tomas and Ish Polvorosa with Oliver Almadro calling the shots. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
