Major airlines cancel dozens of flights to Tel Aviv
Major airlines have canceled dozens of flights to Tel Aviv this weekend after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise large-scale attack against Israel. American Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa, Emirates and Ryanair are among those pulling flights to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport. However, airport authorities did not stop commercial air links with Israel's second international airport at Eilat, a tourist destination on the Red Sea. And Israeli flag carrier El Al said Sunday that it was maintaining its Tel Aviv flights for now, though some flights operated by foreign partners had been cancelled. "We might cancel flights to places where we don't have a lot of Israelis to help other Israelis in other places," a spokeswoman told AFP. In a statement, El Al added that it was operating "in accordance with the instructions of the Israeli security forces", with all flights now departing only from Terminal Three at Ben Gurion airport. Like most other airlines, it said clients could change their tickets without charge. After Saturday saw a list of major carriers cancelling flights Spain's AENA airports operator told AFP four of nine flights scheduled to Tel Aviv on Sunday had been cancelled, two from Madrid and two from Barcelona. Another nine flights, from Tel Aviv to airports in Spain, have so far been unaffected, the operator said. Spain's Air Europa said it had cancelled its two flights scheduled between Madrid and Tel Aviv, while Iberia Express, the low-cost arm of national carrier Iberia, went ahead with a Madrid-Tel Aviv flight after suspending two on Saturday. Vueling, the Barcelona-based low-cost airline, said given the situation in Israel, "flights to/from Tel Aviv are affected and experiencing delays". A spokesman for Germany's Lufthansa on Saturday cited "the current security situation" to say it was cancelling all flights to and from Tel Aviv "up until and including Monday", adding it was monitoring the situation. Brussels Airlines, part of the Lufthansa group, also cancelled its Tel Aviv flights. Air France said it had halted Tel Aviv flights "until further notice", and the Air France-KLM group's low-cost carrier Transavia said it was cancelling all flights from Paris and Lyon to Tel Aviv up to and including Monday. Spanish airline Iberia announced that its budget subsidiary Iberia Express was cancelling its Tel Aviv flights. Italy's flag-carrier ITA airways cancelled its flight until Sunday morning at the earliest "to protect the safety of passengers and crew", while Polish carrier LOT also cancelled its flights from the Polish capital on Saturday. Other airlines suspending flights included Aegean, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Wizz Air and Air Canada. Horror, whodunit, action, inspiration
We are drowning in content from gazillions of platforms, and it’s hard to pick which movie is worth your time. Here’s a rundown of popular picks now playing in cinemas and on the streamers. ‘A Haunting in Venice’ (2023) If you are a fan of Agatha Christie and Christie’s fictional Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, then indulge yourself in A Haunting in Venice, the third installment in the Poirot cinematic universe and the sequel to Death on the Nile (2022). The first Poirot movie was Murder on the Orient Express (2017). Kenneth Branagh directs and reprises his role as the mustachioed detective in A Haunting in Venice, a stylish, dark, eerie whodunit mystery set in post-World War II Venice. I saw this at the luxurious Venice Ultra Cinema at the Venice Grand Canal — the perfect venue to enhance the movie’s Venice-canal mystery feels. Here, the retired Poirot is forced to solve a spooky murder by attending a séance at a haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, you’ll have fun solving the mystery with him. (Now showing in cinemas) ‘Immersion’ (2023) From Japanese filmmaker Takashi Shimizu, best known as the creator of Ju-on: The Grudge, comes another horror film, Immersion. Utilizing modern technology to incorporate into his supernatural tale, Shimizu takes viewers to a VR-reality research facility where all the horror takes place. Starring Daigo Nishihata, Noa Kawazoe Rina Ikoma and Yûta Hiraoka, Immersion uses grisly murder, rape, adultery, vengeance and redemption as themes in this modern tale of terror. (Now showing in cinemas) ‘The Equalizer 3’ (2023) [caption id="attachment_185049" align="aligncenter" width="525"] DENZEL Washington in ‘The Equalizer 3.’ | photograph courtesy of SONY PICTURES[/caption] As long as it’s Denzel Washington, the film is bound to be important. The vigilante action film directed by Antoine Fuqua is the action-packed sequel to The Equalizer 2 and the final installment in The Equalizer trilogy. Washington reprises his role as retired US Marine and DIA officer Robert McCall, who is now settled peacefully in a small town in Southern Italy. He’s made new friends, life is good, life is violence-free. But when McCall discovers that his new friends are under the control of the local mafia, then he has no choice but to unleash his government-assassin skills and wipe them all out. With action-man Fuqua directing and Washington’s star power, The Equalizer 3 makes for one hell of a finale. (Now showing in cinemas) ‘Tár’ (2022) [caption id="attachment_185046" align="aligncenter" width="525"] CATE Blanchett as Lydia Tár. | photograph courtesy of UNIVERSAL PICTURES[/caption] In Todd Field’s Oscar-nominated psychological thriller, Cate Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, a world-renowned conductor facing accusations of misconduct. The riveting, thought-provoking film delves on cancel culture and the #MeToo movement from a compelling angle. This film, one of the best from last year’s Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, also won Blanchett the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. Field’s superb film is restrained yet thick with tension. It’s for cinephiles who enjoy deep conversations and discussions on art versus artists, among other issues. (On HBO Go) ‘A Million Miles Away’ (2023) [caption id="attachment_185051" align="aligncenter" width="525"] MICHAEL Peña in ‘A Million Miles Away.’ | photograph courtesy of AMAZON PRIME[/caption] Inspired by a true story, A Million Miles Away stars Michael Peña as NASA flight engineer José Hernández. The biopic follows the life of the flight engineer from his hometown in Mexico to his life on the International Space Station. The stirring tale reveals to viewers how Hernandez started out as a farm worker before becoming an engineer, then an astronaut. If you feel that your dreams are impossible, then get your motivational shot from this movie. The post Horror, whodunit, action, inspiration appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Panelo: Resolve Maguindanao Norte predicament
Former Presidential Legal Adviser Atty. Salvador Panelo on Thursday has called on the provincial government of Maguindanao del Norte to resolve the problem of having two governors, saying that it stalls the basic public services that should be delivered to the public. “The law is very clear, you cannot have vacancy in government elected position, otherwise problems will occur like what is happening now in Maguindanao del Norte where it has Bangsamoro Ministry of Interior and Local Government-endorsed Governor Abdulraof Macacua and designated acting Governor Fatima Ainee Sinsuat who was the former Vice Governor,” Panelo said. He added that the Supreme Court also have already ruled “that the designation of Sinsuat is valid,” as the local government employees are also caught in the middle of controversy of having two governors for their province. Sinsuat’s spokesperson Atty. Samuel Divina earlier explained that the situation of the province is getting bleaker as the MILG continues to block the funds supposedly intended for the people of Maguindanao del Norte, as well as the plans and programs of the local government supposedly governed by the designated acting governor since Maguindanao was separated into two by the plebiscite last year. He added that Malacañang was not swayed by the prodding of the MILG and should now recall the appointment of Abdulraof Macacua, who was not even voted by the people of Maguindanao. “Recall the appointment of Macacua, for the basic services to the people to roll,” Divina said, pleading Malacañang to cancel or nullify the appointment of Macacua. Divina also stressed that the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao’s Bureau of Local Government and Finance, the MILG and the Land Bank in the province are allegedly holding the budget hostage because of the confusion it brought when they endorsed Macacua to Malacañang to be the governor. Divina said that the MILG was even a respondent to the Petition for Mandamus filed by Sinsuat at the Supreme Court which ruled on her favor. 91 BSKE candidates facing disqualification
The Commission on Elections on Sunday reported that 91 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections candidates on 30 October are facing disqualifications. COMELEC Chairman George Garcia, in a radio interview at dzBB, said the COMELEC has already issued the candidates show cause orders over their alleged election offenses such as premature campaigning. "There were no formal complaints. These were only the results of what we have seen or reported to us. What the COMELEC did is motu proprio investigation. This is the COMELEC’s own initiative," Garcia said. He added that the COMELEC has the power to investigate and file its own complaints against candidates who commit election offenses. COMELEC spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco also last Friday said they have over a hundred petitions for disqualification due to various election offenses, as of Thursday. At least 43 of the petitions are to declare certain candidates as nuisance bets, cancel certain certificates of candidacy (COCs), and disqualify over some issues. The rest have yet to be formally filed. The 91 candidates, on the other hand, were given three days from the receipt of the show cause orders to explain their sides regarding the accusations. For formal complaints, Garcia said, the COMELEC would issue subpoenas. The poll body has repeatedly warned against premature campaigning as the campaign period will run only from 19 to 28 October. Garcia said putting up posters and promoting themselves on social media before the campaign period starts may be considered premature campaigning. "The filing of show cause orders against 91 BSKE bets was just the beginning. There will be many more. We will do that daily," Garcia said. The COMELEC chair earlier encouraged voters to file complaints against BSKE candidates who will campaign even before the official campaign period starts. Around 1,414,487 COCs were filed across the country for the coming BSKE. The post 91 BSKE candidates facing disqualification appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Pirate politician: eyepatch-wearing Scholz sparks mirth
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday posted a photo of himself wearing an eyepatch after injuring his face while jogging, triggering a flood of pirate jokes online. Scholz suffered minor injuries after falling while out running at the weekend, forcing him to cancel some appointments. The chancellor posted a picture on X, formerly known as Twitter, showing him wearing a large black patch over his right eye, with red scrape marks visible around the edge. "Thanks for the well wishes. It looks worse than it is!" he wrote under the picture on his official account. "Excited to see the memes," he added. And there were memes aplenty, many comparing him to a buccaneer. They ranged from one featuring an eyepatch-wearing cartoon pirate brandishing a cutlass, to others showing a pirate at a ship's wheel, and Scholz wearing a hat with a skull and crossbones on it and holding a sword. There were also many messages wishing him a speedy recovery, with his tweet racking up over 31,000 likes and more than 6,000 comments by the evening. Despite the injury, Scholz -- who has been a regular runner for several years -- was in good form, his spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said. The German Chancellor was seen later Monday, sporting the eyepatch, at an annual reception at a Catholic Church in Berlin. He also planned to attend his scheduled appointments this week, including a tour of the IAA car show in Munich on Tuesday and a speech in parliament on Wednesday. "He's doing well under the circumstances," Hebestreit told a regular press briefing. "He was in a good mood this morning, although he still looks a little battered."
