Toxic? Britney tells of troubles in new memoir
Britney Spears, the dewy-eyed child star who became a global pop phenomenon and then melted down in full view of the world, tells her story Tuesday with the release of her already bestselling memoir. "The Woman In Me" is the pop princess in her own, unvarnished words, shot through with the anguish of a family she believes has failed her at every step of the way, in an industry that mercilessly devours its talent. From sharing daiquiris with her mother as a young teenager -- two years after she became a regular on "The Mickey Mouse Club" -- to the 13 years she spent as an adult in a conservatorship, the memoir details how she struggled to escape the influence of her controlling father. Until two years ago, when she got out from under the conservatorship legal relationship that she says dictated everything from her birth control choices to the set list at lucrative Las Vegas gigs. In the intervening months, Spears has married a former dancer, announced then lost a pregnancy, and is now on the road to her third divorce. The book, whose pre-orders catapulted it to the top of the Amazon best-seller list, was produced too early to include that coda with husband Sam Asghari. But readers will still have plenty to chew on. 'Harlot' Tidbits that have leaked ahead of publication include news of an abortion Spears says fellow Mickey Mouse Club alum Justin Timberlake urged her to have after she became pregnant while the couple was together. When the pair split, and his hit "Cry Me A River" appeared to be about the way he felt she had betrayed him, Spears was painted as the "harlot who'd broken the heart of America's golden boy," she writes. In reality, he was "happily running around Hollywood" while she was "comatose in Louisiana." Readers have also learned of a brief but intense affair with Irish actor and Oscar nominee Colin Farrell, what she calls "a two-week brawl." "Brawl is the only word for it -- we were all over each other, grappling so passionately it was like we were in a street fight." The noughties brought fame and notoriety to Spears in equal measure, with a passionate fan base eager for every last scrap of news about her. That collided with an aggressive paparazzi culture that delighted in capturing her partying alongside hell-raisers like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. Spears insists there were never hard drugs and that she did not have a drinking problem, but admits that she was taking Adderall, the ADHD medication. A publicly played-out bust-up with second husband Kevin Federline, and an ensuing custody fight over their two children, presaged the emotional low watermark: shaving her head and attacking a photographer's car. "Flailing those weeks without my children, I lost it, over and over again," she writes. "I didn't even really know how to take care of myself. "I'd begin to think in some ways like a child." A year later, the courts appointed her father Jamie Spears to control her money and her personal life. Over the next 13 years, she was told who she could see, and how much she could spend, and even ordered not to have more children. Yet under Jamie Spears, she would still perform as a pop icon. "Too sick to choose my own boyfriend and yet somehow healthy enough to appear on sitcoms and morning shows, and to perform for thousands of people in a different part of the world every week." "From that point on, I began to think that (my father) saw me as put on the earth for no other reason than to help their cash flow." Jamie Spears has always insisted that he had the best interests of his daughter at heart and was seeking to protect her from exploitation. The conservatorship was dissolved in 2021, but -- aside from collaborations with Elton John and will.i.am -- it has not heralded a return to creativity for Spears. "Pushing forward in my music career is not my focus at the moment," the now-41-year-old Britney writes. "It's time for me not to be someone who other people want; it's time to actually find myself.".....»»
Australian Indigenous rights vote fuels racism
A referendum aimed at elevating the rights of Indigenous Australians has instead triggered a torrent of racist slurs and abuse, with toxic debate spreading online and in the media. The October 14 vote will decide whether to finally recognize First Nations peoples in the constitution. Their ancestors were in Australia for 60,000 years before British colonial rule began in the late 1700s. The reform would give Indigenous communities the right to advise parliament -- a so-called "Voice" -- to help address entrenched inequalities including poorer health, weaker education, and higher rates of incarceration. But recent surveys indicate support for the referendum has plummeted over the past year and will likely fail. The debate has stirred uncertainty about the reform's scope and impact. It has also stoked racial tensions. "It has involved personal attacks, labelling of people as 'un-Australian' and perpetuating racially based stereotypes," Australia's Race Discrimination Commissioner Chin Tan told AFP. "I am disappointed that the way some people have engaged in the debate has stoked racial tensions and caused harm to First Nations peoples." Racist conduct had gone largely unchallenged in the public domain, he said. "Racism should never be accepted as part of the exchange of ideas in public debate." Voters have to choose one way or the other, and recent surveys indicate the "yes" camp is at just over 40 percent and the "no" side at nearly 60 percent. It is a near reversal of the situation a year ago. Opponents have criticized the proposal for a lack of detail and for creating unnecessary bureaucracy. But opposition leader Peter Dutton, one of the leading campaigners against the Voice, also warned it would "re-racialise" Australia. Referendum supporters accused Dutton of disinformation and scare-mongering. 'Catastrophic breakdown' Indigenous-related racism reports have spiked since July, according to University of Technology Sydney criminology professor Chris Cunneen, who leads a project that documents such incidents. The share of racism complaints in the "Call It Out" register related to the referendum had climbed to about 30 percent since July, he said. In previous months, the rate was eight percent. "We have also seen an increase in reports of racism online on social media and in the media during the same period," Cunneen said. "Combined these make roughly more than half of all reports." A national mental health helpline for First Nations peoples, 13YARN, painted a similar picture. It recorded a 108-percent increase in callers reporting abuse, racism and trauma from March-June compared to a year earlier, a spokesperson said. University of Queensland communications professor Timothy Graham examined thousands of Voice-related posts on X, formerly Twitter. He found a "catastrophic breakdown of public communication about the referendum across the entire Australian media ecology". "X/Twitter is overrun with confusion, misinformation, and incivility -- this occurs in what can only be described as a vicious feedback loop between politicians, partisan media, and social media," he told AFP. Online abuse Samala Cronin, an Indigenous woman of Butchulla heritage in Queensland, knows how it feels. In August, an old video of her went viral. It showed her in a heated row with an elderly couple about a parcel of land over which Aboriginal people have "exclusive native title". "I got about 3,000 notifications from Facebook and I thought: 'Oh my God'," she told AFP at the time. It has since racked up thousands more reactions on the platform. The comments were littered with racist insults. The country's online safety watchdog, the eSafety Commission, said it had recorded a small but noticeable rise in the proportion of adult cyber abuse complaints from First Nations people in the first half of this year. "We're also hearing from community stakeholders that online abuse is ratcheting up as we approach the referendum," eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant told AFP. She urged all Australians to "discuss and debate this issue respectfully, without stooping to slurs, racist remarks, hate speech or abuse". Native Aussies supporters urge ‘yes’ vote
Thousands of Australians rallied in major cities Sunday for a “yes” vote to the proposed indigenous rights reform that is facing strong opposition from other citizens in the land down under. The “Walk for Yes” marches were four weeks ahead of the 14 October referendum that the minority group and the government hope will address the marginalization of the natives. More than 200 years since British colonization, indigenous people — whose ancestors have lived on the continent for about 60,000 years — have shorter lives than other Australians, poorer education and are far more likely to die in police custody. A favorable referendum result would give them a voice in parliament, which supporters believe is long overdue. Supporters of the Voice, who also gathered in Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Brisbane, Darwin, Hobart and Alice Springs, say a “yes” vote would help address inequalities. Opponents, however, argue that it would confer special privileges on indigenous peoples while adding an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy. In the referendum, voters will be asked: “A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognize the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?” Voting is compulsory, with non-voters who don’t have a valid reason liable to a fine of 20 Australian dollars. Knife-wielding man arrested
A patrolling cop from the Manila Police District Police Station 1 prevented a brawl that could have possibly led to a stabbing after he arrested one of the two men involved in the fight, who was holding a bladed weapon, on Saturday evening in Tondo, Manila. MPD Chief P/Brig. Gen Andrei Dizon identified the suspect as Alvin Flores, a resident of Barangay 112 in Tondo, Manila. Initial reports disclosed that while cops were making a night patrol aboard their motorcycle, they chanced upon a commotion wherein two individuals were brawling. One of the men ran and the other, who was armed with a bladed weapon, chased his opponent. This caught the attention of the police, who also gave chase to the suspect in possession of a knife. After cornering him, they ordered him to drop his weapon and lie down on the ground. The suspect, after seeing uniformed police, yielded to the command and peacefully followed their instructions until he was arrested and handcuffed. Seized from the suspect was one sharpened screwdriver with a length of more or less 12 inches, including the handle. The suspect is currently detained at the MPD-PS1 station and will face charges for violation Article 282 of the Revised Penal Code or Grave Threat, Alarm and Scandal, Illegal Possession of Deadly Weapon and violation of the Omnibus Election Code at the Manila City Prosecutors Office. Thirty-five more people charged after fatal stabbing of Greek football fan
Greek prosecutors on Sunday charged 35 more people in connection with the fatal stabbing of a young Greek football fan before a Champions League game, taking the total to face charges over the incident to 105. Of that number, 102 are from Croatia and suspected of links with the 'Bad Blue Boys', hardline supporters of Dinamo Zagreb who traveled to Greece last Monday, the day before their side's Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens. The others are two Greeks and an Albanian. Authorities are hunting for another Greek national, also suspected of being involved in the fatal attack, according to the same judicial source. Michalis Katsouris, 29, died after being stabbed in a mass brawl that erupted on the streets of the Greek capital. Following his death, UEFA postponed Tuesday's third-round qualifier between the two sides until 19 August. Those remanded in custody have all denied involvement in the death of Katsouris. Charges they face include murder, involvement in a criminal organization, and illegal possession of weapons. ‘MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING’ REVIEW MISSION TO ENTERTAIN FAILS
It’s not that Tom Cruise has significantly aged in the seventh, and possibly the penultimate entry, to the Mission Impossible franchise that makes Dead Reckoning - Part One one of the worst films of the year. [caption id="attachment_158075" align="aligncenter" width="525"] TOM CruisePHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF PARAMOUNT PICTURES[/caption] The 61-year-old actor is still lithe and agile and runs like Speedy Gonzales. But it’s the eerily bad script that is rather painful here. You’d think ChatGPT — in its beta-testing phase — could probably generate a better screenplay. Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct his third MI installment, co-writing a story that understandably jumps into the realm of Artificial Intelligence, given it›s the popular thing these days. Here, Cruise’s superspy Ethan Hunt is embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with clowns to get hold of a powerful physical key that holds immense power and can be weaponized on an unimaginable scale. One of the enemies is a rogue AI called The Entity that looks like plain disco lights, or a generic animated desktop screensaver, when shown on a computer. AI, in real life, is a terrifying threat. But in this movie, you don’t experience the danger of its sentience. Except for a mildly interesting precognition from a cipher-locked explosive, the most “exciting” thing The Entity can do here are some CCTV tricks, which we have seen a gazillion times, even way back in the past with the famous bus scene from Keanu Reeves’ Speed (1994). The similarly rogue and sentient AI in two X-Files episodes in the ‘90s, The Ghost in the Machine and Kill Switch, are ten times more thrilling than Dead Reckoning’s plot. Nothing new The Targaryen-haired Vanessa Kirby returns as arms dealer Alanna, as well as Ethan’s usual IMF gang Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji (Simon Pegg) and Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson). A new major supporting female character is introduced, Grace (Hayley Atwell), a professional pickpocket that quickly (quicker than a Tinder swipe) becomes Hunt’s new love interest. The “biggest” human villain here is the laughable terrorist Gabriel (Esai Morales) who looks more like a bored dad who enjoys lame tricks to amuse his kids, such as hiding inside a coffin-like treasure chest or walking stiffly behind doors, furniture and airport facilities. Even more unintentionally hilarious is when Gabriel’s assistant, the cosplayer-like Paris (Pom Klementieff), opens doors for him or unlocks latches for him to give him some semblance of a grand entrance. You may argue that you’re in it for the stunts and the action set pieces. After all, MI is known for its spectacle — stunning intercontinental locations where Cruise does all his heart-stopping stunts. Sure. Yawn. Here, the action scenes are nothing new. Hand-to-hand combat on top of a train? We’ve seen a thousand versions of this already. A car chase in Rome? A similar sequence in the kiddie movie Madagascar 3 is way more thrilling. Unintentionally funny The fight choreography, too, is often lazy and too zippy, with quick cuts that deprive you of the power seen in Rogue Nation’s raw, organic bathroom brawl between Cruise and Henry Cavill. The action scenes are overstretched and uninspired that you can easily stand up for a bathroom break — heck, you can even do your groceries — and when you come back, it’s still the same stuff happening on screen. The famous motorbike scene? We’ve seen it go viral on TikTok already, so it doesn’t cut it anymore. The dialogue, too, is often unintentionally funny, with surprisingly hammy acting, even for Cruise. There is a scene, at a “dangerous” meeting at a Venice party, where Ethan and Grace, surrounded by their enemies, are using their eyes to communicate, yet they are being so obvious that the film feels like a B-movie, or a deepfake of Mission Impossible, or I am in a James Corden MI parody with Lalo Schifrin’s theme music just thrown in. The movie’s jaw-dropping score of 96 percent at Rotten Tomatoes, as of writing, feels like AI sabotage. Nearly three hours long, Dead Reckoning - Part One is a disturbing example that humans are no longer imaginative and that AI›s threat is becoming real, what with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. At this point, AI just might entertain us better. 1.5 out of 5 stars Now showing in cinemas The post ‘MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING’ REVIEW MISSION TO ENTERTAIN FAILS appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
