GREATEST PERFORMANCES: Arellano U’s sweep of thrice-to-beat SSC-R
Arellano University has been the dominating force in the NCAA women’s volleyball for the past three seasons. If not for the cancellation of Season 95 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Lady Chiefs would’ve made a strong case for a four-peat. But while the Lady Chiefs displayed great character to extend their reign, it was Arellano U’s impressive showing in Season 92 Finals series that built the solid foundation of its grand slam. Three years ago, the Lady Chiefs redeemed themselves from surrendering the crown the previous season by dethroning College of St. Benilde in the stepladder semifinals. Arellano U thus earned a return ticket to the Finals. However, the Lady Chiefs had to face an uphill climb in the championship series as they took on an unbeaten Grethcel Soltones-led San Sebastian College armed with a thrice-to-beat advantage. The Lady Stags handed Arellano U its only loss in the elimination round, before coming into the Finals with nine straight wins. Led by the graduating Soltones backed by a veteran crew, SSC-R looked poised to avenge its humiliating defeat the season before when they squandered the same series advantage. But the Lady Chiefs proved that they were the hungrier team. Using the death of head coach Obet Javier’s wife, Amy Marie, after a long bout with lung cancer as added motivation, Arellano U pulled off a shocker in the series opener. The Lady Chiefs swept the Recto-based squad, 25-18, 25-20, 25-16, with Rialen Sante, Jovie Prado, Andrea Marzan and Mary Anne Esguerra leading the way. Drawing first blood, Arellano U quickly shifted momentum to its favor. They played spoiler to Soltones’ third straight Most Valuable Player award in Game 2 when the Lady Chiefs survived a thrilling five-set match, 18-25, 25-16, 25-11, 26-28, 15-13, to inch closer to its second title since joining the league in 2009. Arellano kept its composure in a very tight fifth set breaking a 13-all deadlock with Regine Arocha’s off speed. SSC-R was the first top blink when Dangie Encarnacion committed an attack error that brought back the nightmare of the Lady Stags’ Season 91 Finals defeat. Then in Game 3, the Lady Chiefs celebrated Valentine’s Day by breaking the hearts of the Lady Stags, 25-15, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16. “Napakalaki sa amin ito kasi 'yung mga bata, pinaghirapan talaga namin ang taon na ito," Javier said then. "Noong first round, natalo kami sa Baste kaya nag-set kami ng goal na hindi na dapat mangyari ito. Nangyari naman." That feat set the tone for Arellano U’s next two conquests. From there, the Lady Chiefs established its current domination of the country’s oldest collegiate league. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
Paul Lee reminds fellow Tondo pride RK Ilagan to prioritize Baste
RK Ilagan is the deadliest gunner in all of college today. The pint-sized point guard is a threat from anywhere and everywhere and can put all of San Sebastian College-Recoletos on his shoulders. Now heading into his fifth and final year however, one dark cloud still hangs over his head. "One week before ng NCAA, naglaro ako ng ligang-labas, pero 'di ko po alam nun na kapag napasa na yung requirements, bawal na po pala yun," he said in The Prospects Pod last Friday. "Nakakaapanghinayang po talaga yung time na yun kasi magpapa-draft na dapat si Michael Calisaan nun tapos, kumbaga, nasama ko po siya sa ilalim." In NCAA 93, Ilagan was put under investigation by the league’s management committee for playing in a commercial league and was ultimately suspended for three games. As per league rules, a player is not allowed to see action in any other league during the season without the permission of his school. At the same time, the Golden Stags were forced to forfeit the two wins he had seen action in. When the elimination round ended, Baste found itself on the outside looking into the playoff picture - and that's how Calisaan's collegiate career came to a close. That cannot happen again - and it should not have even happened in the first place. "Bawas-bawasan mo muna yung pagliligang-labas mo," Paul Lee told Ilagan later in the episode. "I mean, hindi naman masama kasi nanggaling din ako dun, pero nung last year ko sa UAAP, I stopped playing sa ligang labas so mas na-priority ko yung UE." The two are both proud products of Tondo. As such, Lee knows Ilagan full well - just as much as he knows ligang-labas full well. And the former said that all that extra action makes it hard for a player to be at full strength. "Sobrang importante ng pahinga sa katawan. Kasi isipin mo, kunwari may laro ka ng umaga sa (PBA) D-League tapos may ligang-labas ka sa gabi," he shared. He then continued, "For sure, alam mo naman anong oras natatapos yun so wala kang pahinga para kinabukasan." As Ilagan enters his last year in college, though, the "Angas ng Tondo" reminded him to put his full focus on San Sebastian. As he put it, "Kung gusto mo talagang makamit yung dream mong maging player sa PBA, alamin mo yung priorities mo. Practice sa umaga, pahinga sa gabi, tapos marami pa rin namang pwedeng gawin like extra work." He then continued, "Priorities lang. Yung ligang-labas, hindi mawawala yan. Minsan nga, kapag dumating ka na sa posisyon ko, sa posisyon ni Kiefer [Ravena], mag-jumpball ka lang, babayaran ka na e." Sooner than later, Tondo may very send yet another great guard to the PBA - and Paul Lee is making sure that happens. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

CIT-U snaps three-game losing skid with a win over Verallo
CEBU CITY, Philippines— After three disappointing defeats, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats finally earned their first sweet victory in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball during their game against neophytes, the Felipe Verallo Foundation College (FVFC) Blue Dragons, 83-71, on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at the Cebu Coliseum. The Wildcats, who became viral for their 74-point loss,75-109, against the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters earlier this month, found their winning ways on Sunday with rookie John Rey Guinita leading them with 26 points. Guinita perfectly balanced his scoring after he tallied 13 points in each halves of the game. Edwin Charles Jao contributed 14 points, while Jim Brent Taala added 12 markers, nine of which came from beyond the arc. The victory improved the Wildcats’ record to one win and three losses, while the Blue Dragons of head coach Titing Manalili fell to a 0-4 (win-loss) record putting them at the bottom of the team standings. Francis Earl Solis scored 14 points for Verallo, while John Gellego added nine points in their losing efforts. CIT-U has a chance to grab a back-to-back win as they take on another newcomer, the Benedicto College Cheetahs, on October 21, while Verallo returns into action on the same date against the formidable USJ-R Jaguars. Ezekiel Zamora scored 12 points for CIT-U, while teammate Sam Kyle Aballe had eight points in their defeat. CEC improved to a 4-1 card to stay at the No. 3 spot in the high school team standings, while the Wildkittens dropped to the sixth spot with a 1-2 slate. USC 64, DBTC 57 On the other hand, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors ended their four-game losing skid by beating the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves, 64-57, in the other high school game on Sunday. The win improved USC’s record to 1-4 slate, while DBTC’s losing woes continued as they dropped to a 0-5 card. Kent Dave Chavez unloaded 18 points, while Bhenz Daug contributed 10 points for USC. Sultan Kudarat top insurgent falls
ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Joint Task Force Central on Tuesday reported that a high-ranking leader of the New People’s Army and one of the highly-valued targets of the military was killed during an encounter with state troops in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat. JTF-C Commander Maj. Gen. Alex Rillera said the leader of NPA’s Beijing Platoon of the Far South Mindanao Region died in the clash at Sitio Kalogkog, Badiangon, Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat shortly before midnight on Sunday. Rillera identified the slain NPA leader as Joseph Longan alias Michael, one of the remaining leaders of the NPA-FMR. “Due to the report earlier that NPAs are recruiting high school students in the Sultan Kudarat area, we have intensified the operation against these NPAs that resulted in the neutralization of Longan,” Rillera said. Meantime, 603rd Brigade commander Brigadier General Michael Santos revealed that a grenade, food and personal belongings were also recovered from Longan’s possession. “These NPA members have nowhere to go in our area (Sultan Kudarat) because we will continue to conduct military operations against them,” Santos said. Rillera also renewed his appeal to the remaining NPA members to return to the government. “We will give you a chance to change your life with your beloved families, your government is here to help you because no one wins by using force,” Rillera said. “We know that you were just a victim of the treacherous senior NPA members of the group who brought your colleague to such a terrible misfortune. We are ready to listen to your grievances,” he added. JTF-Central records showed that of the total 42 NPAs logged, seven were arrested, 12 were killed while 23 surrendered to the government since January this year. Law graduates told: Inspire justice
Supreme court associate Justice Ramon Paul Hernando is urging the new law graduates of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law to “live justice, breathe justice, do justice and inspire justice, at all times.” Hernando — who was also the 2023 Bar Exams chairperson — was the guest speaker at the 77th Annual Commencement Exercises of the held at Areté Ateneo’s Hyundai Hall on 23 July 2023. The SC associate justice previously taught at the AdMU School of Law from 2015 until 2018, when he was appointed to the High Court. “Wholeheartedly push yourselves successfully through the Bar Examinations and prepare yourselves for what is inevitably ahead, which is your life role, as lawyers,” said Hernando to the graduates. “If someday, somehow, you get lost, confused, or tempted, please allow yourselves to be guided by your moral compass,” he added. Emphasizing that “lawyering is a profession of compassion,” Hernando told the graduates that when written law falls short of compassion, “you, as soon-to-be members of the Bar, shall fill that void in the law with overt acts of compassion, in whatever capacity that you will find yourselves in, whether in the public or private sector. After all, compassion establishes trust.” Hernando urged the Ateneo Law graduates to approach people “of different standings in life, grips on power, and levels of principle” without prejudice, stressing that they should strive to be lawyers of equity just as courts of law are also courts of equity. They were reminded to be lawyers with empathy and to put emotional quotient over intelligence quotient. “You may have a great level of legal knowledge, but without a greater level of emotional intelligence, you will never be able to forge that trust with the people that you will serve,” Hernando said. Furthermore, he urged them to not stop at the logical bounds of the statute, especially when the realities are obviously and unreasonably unfair. “Do not falter in choosing to do the right thing, even if you are alone in doing so. Remember that silence and inaction in the face of unfairness makes you complicit and accessory to such unfairness,” Hernando said. Cakes for Dad
Father’s Day takes place every third Sunday of June, and this year it falls on 18 June, which is already this Sunday. It is that one special day of the year when the world honors fathers (and father figures) by recognizing the important role that they play in our lives. A celebration which started in Washington, United States, in 1910, Father’s Day has been observed in the Philippines since the 1980s. It is not an official public holiday, but since it falls on a Sunday, families are able to celebrate it without any problems. As it is with Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May, families usually celebrate Father’s Day with food. They go out and enjoy lunch or dinner together. They also gift Daddy dear with a cake or confection. Here are some of the options. Escudero: MIF bill a ‘leap of faith into great unknown’
Senator Francis Escudero is still contemplating the uncertainties in the return of equity threshold compulsory to the two state-owned banks as envisioned through the ‘Maharlika’ Investment Fund or MIF. Escudero has called on for more “earning guarantees” in the MIF bill, which the Senate intends to approve before the legislative break comes next week, saying that the seed money put by the Land Bank of the Philippines and the Development Bank of Philippines Maharlika Investment Corporation or MIC, must earn more than its current average investment yield of 6 percent. The senator warned that “without benchmark in yields”, the LBP and DBP will be earning less than 6 percent of their income threshold. “The idea is that the Land Bank and DBP should grow the money and not go bankrupt. Remember, the bill makes their equity compulsory. So in exchange, will there be guarantees as to their returns as well?,” said Escudero, who used to chair the Senate committee on banks, financial institutions, and currencies committee. Escudero said the bill, as presently worded, "is a leap of faith to the great unknown.” He added he has yet to hear a full explanation of how much the two banking giants will earn from their Maharlika investments. "Landbank and DBP, during the hearings, said they were earning on average 6 to 8 percent. So, let us average it up at 7 percent. You have to give Landbank and DBP a return of at least 7 percent per annum on what they invested in MIC. On top of that is the 2 percent administrative fee cap the MIC may use,” he pointed out. Senate Bill 2020 or MIF states that the total authorized P500 billion in capital stocks of the MIC, the initial P125 billion worth of MIC common stocks to be subscribed by the national government amounting to P75 billion shall be fully paid respectively—LBP for P50 billion and DBP for P25 billion. "Then we have to factor in inflation. So easily, the yield will be in the two-digit zone. In any investment pitch, the income output is the most important bottom line. An investment is made because one is convinced that it will make money. Not behest. Not something coerced through legislation,” Escudero pointed out. While the proposed measure allows the two banks to seek regulatory relief from the Central Bank if their position falls below standards, Escudero stressed: "This should not happen." “And to dangle this as the standard reply to issues validly raised is not the comforting answer we want to hear. Once a regulatory relief is sought "that means the banks already lost a lot of money," he said. Lady Bulldogs book semis seat
Games Sunday: (MOA Arena) 9:00 a.m. --- UST vs FEU (m) 11:00 a.m. --- UST vs FEU (w) 3:00 p.m. --- La Salle vs Ateneo (w) 5:00 p.m. --- La Salle vs Ateneo (m) Defending champion National University booked a Final Four seat after a cakewalk win, 25-5, 25-15, 25-13, over the hapless University of the East in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena. It took the Lady Bulldogs just 79 minutes to capture their fourth straight victory for a 9-3 win-loss record to climb to solo second spot in the standings. NU joined twice-to-beat league-leading De La Salle University (11-1) and Adamson University (9-4) in the next round leaving University of Santo Tomas (8-3) and Far Eastern University (6-6) scrambling for the last Final Four seat. Reigning Most Valuable Player and last year’s Rookie of the Year Bella Belen made a living on the service line, landing six of the Lady Bulldogs’ total 13 aces to finish with 21 points. Belen smashed 13 spikes and had two kill blocks while tallying six excellent receptions. Ten other NU volleybelles chipped in on offense as head coach Karl Dimaculangan had the luxury of fielding in all his available players. Alyssa Solomon had eight points while Vange Alinsug and Sheena Toring got six and five markers, respectively, for the Lady Bulldogs. NU opened its mauling with a 9-0 blitz in the opening frame, setting the pace for the clinical beating. The Lady Bulldogs outspiked the Lady Warriors, 34-17, and limited their errors to just 14. “We’re very happy we get to apply what we trained for, especially on service,” Belen said. “We minimized our errors and just stuck to our game plan.” The win also gave NU an added boost heading to its much-awaited rematch against UST, which snapped its 20-game winning streak in the first round, on Wednesday. UE remained winless after 12 starts. Van Bangayan led the Lady Warriors with seven points while Ja Lana had five. Meanwhile, the three-peat-seeking Bulldogs easily dismantled the Red Warriors, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20, to move within two wins from completing an elimination round for an outright Finals appearance. Buds Buddin and Nico Almendras led NU to its 12th win in as many games with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Ken Malinis got 10 markers. Owa Retamar tallied 22 excellent sets for the Bulldogs. UE despite the loss remained in contention for a semifinals berth albeit already on the brink of elimination with a 4-8 slate. Giles Torres had eight points while Joshua Pozas got seven for the Red Warriors. The post Lady Bulldogs book semis seat appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
