Rapper Drake says taking break from music over health issue
Canadian Rapper Drake said Friday he is taking a break from music, just hours after dropping his latest album, in order to focus on recurring stomach issues. "I probably won't make music for a little bit, I'm gonna be honest," he said on his SiriusXM radio show Table For One adding: "I need to focus on my health first and foremost... I need to get right." "I've been having the craziest problems for years with my stomach," he explained. The 36-year-old Grammy Award winner had just released his latest studio album "For All The Dogs." His five-year-old son Adonis was featured in a music video for a new single off the album called "8AM in Charlotte." It's unclear if the hiatus will affect upcoming concert dates, including Friday and Saturday shows in Toronto, where fans were already seen lining up. Drake mentioned that he would meet unspecified commitments. "I got some other things I need to do for some other people that I made promises," he said. Otherwise, he said, "I'm gonna lock the door in the studio for a little bit," Drake added. "I don't even know what a little bit is. Maybe a year or so, maybe a little longer." Ready for it? Belgian university offers literature course on Taylor Swift
A hubbub grips the class in the Belgian city of Ghent as university students eagerly discuss whether US pop star Taylor Swift is a "literary genius". The question elicits passionate responses from students, and it's an exercise their professor hopes will enliven their engagement with more traditional figures of the English Literature canon. The course is among a handful that have popped up at universities around the world as pop titan Swift has racked up hits and awards and as her Eras Tour is expected to set a record for the first billion-dollar tour. "To read her lyrics without the context of the song, it can feel like poetry," one student says, after the teacher opens the floor to discussion. Another student pipes up to suggest it's too soon to say Swift, 33, has had the same cultural impact as William Shakespeare, known around the world for many centuries. While Shakespeare wrote at least 38 plays, Swift has recorded 10 albums. Some will wonder what Shakespeare and his peers share in common with today's biggest US singer-songwriter. Well, they are all the subject of Elly McCausland's course called "Literature (Taylor's Version)" for Master's degree students at Ghent University, which will run until the end of the year. During the first class on Monday, assistant professor McCausland piqued the students' curiosity with controversial questions, including why certain authors and literature are considered timeless, while other books are not valued the same way. McCausland's goal? To make literature more accessible. "I'd like to get people excited about literature, thinking about literature in a new way and realizing that actually even literature from centuries and centuries ago still has something to add to our conversations," she told AFP at the class. 'Swift is a real poet' The 10-session course will use Swift's songs as references for themes and will focus on a series of historic texts including Charlotte Bronte's Villette, lesser known than Jane Eyre. The course has proved popular, with 61 students signed up, twice as many as usual. There are even students from other parts of Belgium. Zina Ringoot, 20, had learned just hours before that she could attend the course and made the 90-minute trip to Ghent from Antwerp in the northeast. "I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan," said Ringoot, an English literature Master's student. "I'm hoping to write my thesis on Taylor Swift's album 'folklore' and how it connects to romanticism. So I thought I would get a lot out of this class." Not everyone in the class is a Swiftie, as her fans call themselves. Joris Verschelde, 21, admitted he was "not that big of a fan" but wanted to "see the connection between the songs and what what we already learned" in the older texts. Laughter often fills the windowless auditorium, despite the fact that serious themes are on the agenda, including feminism, sexism and misogyny. When McCausland asks: "Who are the gatekeepers" of English literature, one student quips: "A bunch of old men!" Even if critics reject comparisons with the canonical greats, Swift has fans even among Shakespeare experts including British academic Sir Jonathan Bate. After attending a concert during Swift's record-breaking Eras tour, Bate wrote in the Sunday Times in April: "I came away with confirmation of a thought I first had 15 years ago: this isn't just high-class showbiz, Taylor Swift is a real poet." Beyond Belgium University courses looking at Swift have been popping up around the world. New York University's Clive Davis Institute launched its first-ever course on Swift last year, and Queen Mary University of London offered a summer school this year looking at Swift through a literary lens. In Arizona, PhD student Alexandra Wormley is hosting a course on the social psychology of Swift at Arizona State University this autumn. Critics online and even some media pundits have pondered just what it is about Swift that is so appealing. For Clio Doyle, an academic who hosted the summer course at Queen Mary, "Swift is a really fascinating songwriter". The lecturer in early modern literature added that another reason she looked at Swift was because of her popularity and the discussions surrounding her work. "A course about Swift would be an opportunity for students both to deepen their readings of Swift's lyrics and to think about what it means to study something as literature," Doyle, who runs a similarly-themed podcast about Swift, told AFP. The summer course will be offered again next year, and interest is not limited to the United States or Europe. The University of Melbourne will host a three-day "Swiftposium" looking at Swift's cultural, economic and global impact in February 2024, the same month her tour arrives in Australia. UK’s Prince William ‘sorry’ to miss World Cup final
Britain's Prince William apologized Saturday for not traveling to Australia to attend the Women's World Cup final on Sunday, in which England will take on Spain. The Prince of Wales -- the chairman of England's Football Association -- has faced criticism over the decision not to travel to Sydney to watch the match. "Lionesses I want to send you a huge good luck for tomorrow, we're sorry we can't be there in person but we're so proud of everything you’ve achieved, and the millions you’ve inspired here and around the world," he said in a video on social media that shows him sitting next to his daughter Charlotte. "So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves." Princess Charlotte, who has a football balanced on her lap, added: "Good luck Lionesses." When the Lionesses kick off at Stadium Australia in Sydney for Sunday's match they will attempt to do what no England side, men or women, has managed since 1966 -- win the World Cup. England's women were crowned European champions in 2022. Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will not travel to Australia for the game. The government will be represented by Foreign Minister James Cleverly and Culture Minister Lucy Frazer. Pope winds up Portugal visit with big outdoor Mass
Pope Francis celebrated an open-air Mass before a huge crowd on Sunday at a waterside park near Lisbon to wrap up an international jamboree of Catholic youth. Around 1.5 million people attended the service at the Parque Tejo on the eastern outskirts of the Portuguese capital, the Vatican said. The crowd waved national flags and cheered as the 86-year-old pope arrived at the park, which was built for the occasion on a former landfill site. Many had camped out overnight in sleeping bags or floor mats after attending a vigil there held by the pope. "You are the hope of a different world," Francis said in his homily as many national flags fluttered in the sea of pilgrims. The leader of the world's 1.3 billion Roman Catholics also urged the pilgrims to pray for those who could not come "because of armed conflicts and wars". "There are many of them in our world. In thinking of this continent, I feel great sorrow for beloved Ukraine, which continues to suffer greatly," he added to applause. With little shade in the park, pilgrims protected themselves from the blazing sun with umbrellas or makeshift tents made from sheets. "It's extraordinary to be able to be here to see our Pope Francis who has managed to gather people from the whole world," Pimentel Gomes, a 52-year-old priest from Brazil, told AFP as he sat for breakfast before the Mass. Unforgettable days The pope, who now uses a wheelchair or walking stick to get around, addressed some 24,000 event volunteers on Sunday afternoon to thank them before flying back to Rome. "You have made these unforgettable days possible," he said. Francis is expected to give a press conference onboard the papal plane, which is set to land in Rome at around 10:15 p.m. (2015 GMT) This was his first foreign trip since he spent nine nights in hospital after undergoing hernia surgery in June. Charlotte Bordas, a 26-year-old who came from Mont-de-Marsan in southwestern France, said she was moved to see the pope had made the trip despite his health problems. "We see he's really tired, weakened, but he still took the time to come to see us, talk to us, and it is particularly touching for me to see him," she told AFP. Francis arrived in Portugal on Wednesday for World Youth Day, a six-day international Catholic jamboree featuring festive, cultural, and religious events. It comes as Francis attempts to galvanize young Catholics at a time when secularism and priest pedophilia scandals cause some to abandon pews in Europe. Room for everybody The pope met 13 victims of clerical abuse at the Holy See's diplomatic mission in Lisbon during his first day in Portugal. He also met 15 youths from war-torn Ukraine, visited a community center in Lisbon's impoverished Serafina neighborhood, and prayed at the shrine of Fatima north of the Portuguese capital. During his visit Francis stressed his call for inclusivity, telling the World Youth Day opening ceremony on Thursday that "in the Church, there is room for everyone". He then led the crowd of half a million people in a chant of "todos, todos, todos" or "everyone, everyone, everyone" to press his point. "It has been an extraordinary moment of joy, of energy, with remarkable speeches by the Holy Father," Portugal's Socialist Prime Minister Antonio Costa told public television RTP. Francis received an enthusiastic welcome throughout his visit to the Catholic-majority country, with well-wishers lining the streets to see him go by. World Youth Day, created in 1986 by John Paul II, is the largest Catholic gathering in the world and features a wide range of events, including concerts and prayer sessions. This edition, initially scheduled for August 2022 but postponed because of the pandemic, is the fourth for Francis after Rio de Janeiro in 2013, Krakow in 2016 and Panama in 2019. At the end of Sunday's Mass, the pope announced that Seoul in South Korea would host the next edition in 2027. Ex-NBA All-Star Kemba Walker signs for Monaco
Former NBA All-Star guard Kemba Walker signed for next season with Monaco on Friday. A four-time All-Star between 2017 and 2020, Walker is one of the highest profile signings in the history of the French league. He was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets where he played for eight seasons before leaving in 2019, before spending two seasons at the Boston Celtics, then a season at the New York Knicks. Last season, the 33-year-old played just nine games with the Dallas Mavericks, who signed him as a free agent in November before cutting him in January. The experienced Walker played 750 NBA games during his career and is the all-time leading scorer for the Hornets. Monaco hope Walker he will line up alongside influential American guard Mike James, who joined in July 2021 and still has a season left on his contract in the Principality. Walker is the fourth signing by the reigning French champions as they attempt to improve on their third-place finish in the Euroleague -- Europe's top club competition -- last season. French internationals Terry Tarpey, Mam Jaiteh and Petr Cornelie have also been recruited. Monaco also confirmed the one-season extension of the contract of Lithuanian centre Donatas Motiejunas, 32. Jane Birkin, British-French celebrity and style icon, dies at 76
Jane Birkin, the British-born singer and actress who became a style icon in her adopted France, has died, a close source said on Sunday. She was 76. Birkin had been suffering from health problems in recent years that had forced her to cancel concerts. The cause of death and other details were not immediately available. Birkin catapulted to fame through her turbulent relationship with legendary singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg and her heavily accented French. With her flared jeans, mini dresses, and messy bangs, Birkin was a fashion icon in the 1970s. In 1984, Hermes named one of its handbags after her, which remains a sought-after status symbol. Turbulent love affair She crossed the Channel in 1968 at the age of 22 to star in a film alongside Gainsbourg, who was 18 years her senior. It was the start of a 13-year relationship that made them France's most famous couple, in the spotlight as much for their bohemian and hedonistic lifestyle as for their work. Birkin, with her soft voice and androgynous silhouette, quickly became a sex symbol, recording a steamy duo with a growling Gainsbourg in 1969, "Je t'aime… moi non plus". Banned on radio in several countries and condemned by the Vatican, the song was a worldwide success. "He and I became the most famous of couples in that strange way because of 'Je t'aime' and because we stuck together for 13 years and he went on being my friend until the day he died. Who could ask for more?" Birkin told CNN in 2006. "So Paris became my home. I've been adopted here. They like my accent," she said. Style icon The daughter of an actress and a naval officer, Birkin married James Bond composer, John Barry, with whom she had a daughter, Kate. The marriage lasted three years. She moved to France after meeting Gainsbourg on the set of a romantic comedy in which he was her co-star. They had a daughter, Charlotte, who became a hugely successful actress and singer. The musical and romantic relationship between Gainsbourg and Birkin was famously tempestuous. During one of their raging rows, Birkin tossed herself into the River Seine after throwing a custard pie in Gainsbourg's face. She blazed her own trail after walking out on France's favorite bad boy in 1980. In her around 70 films she has worked with leading French directors including Bertrand Tavernier, Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Resnais, James Ivory, and Agnes Varda. But she remained forever associated with Gainsbourg, who continued to write songs for her after their split, including "Les dessous chics" about lingerie being used to try to cover up a relationship on the rocks. "It's the most beautiful song about separation you could ever have," Birkin told AFP in a 2018 interview. Her oldest daughter, Kate Barry, a photographer, died in an apparent suicide in 2013. Birkin is survived by her daughter with Gainsbourg, Charlotte, and her daughter Lou Doillon, a singer, whom she had during a 13-year relationship with French director Jacques Doillon. Great Brown Hope
The entire nation erupted in celebration when Kai Sotto finally made his debut in the National Basketball Association Summer League. It was such a memorable performance. The 7-foot-3 Filipino posted six points, four rebounds, three blocks, and an assist in the Orlando Magic’s 88-71 defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers. Aside from washing away the bitterness from being benched in their first three matches against the Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, and New York Knicks, Sotto’s breakout performance could pave the way for him to land a two-way contract in the NBA. We, however, have to manage our expectations. The Filipinos’ road to the NBA is littered with tears, frustrations, and a lot of heartbreaks. Unlike the Chinese, Japanese, Iranians, and Koreans, no full-blooded Filipino has ever penetrated the NBA since its founding in 1946. Johnny Abarrientos came very close when he caught the attention of the Charlotte Hornets following Alaska’s grand slam season in 1996. In fact, the Hornets sent its international scout, Joe Bettancourt, to the country to watch the 5-foot-7 Abarrientos live and in action. Bettancourt was on the sidelines when Alaska battled Purefoods, hoping to give Abarrientos a 10-day contract that would have him replacing the injured Muggsy Bogues, the 5-foot-3 court general who ran the offense for Hornets coach Dave Cowens. Abarrientos, Bettancourt, and Alaska coach Tim Cone even had a “secret meeting” at the Manila Peninsula in 1997 to discuss the terms of Abarrientos’ contract and the possibility of him becoming the first Asian to play in the NBA. But it never happened. Cowens eventually pulled the plug on Bogues and sent him to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for BJ Armstrong, a 6-foot-2 playmaker who was part of the great Chicago Bulls squad that won three straight NBA titles. With Bogues gone, Abarrientos’s chance of making it to the NBA also vanished. Japeth Aguilar tried to revive the Filipinos’ NBA dream a decade later. After seeing action for Ateneo de Manila University in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines league, Aguilar moved to the United States to enroll at Western Kentucky University, a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I program that produced NBA players like Courtney Lee, Mitchell Robinson, and Jeremy Evans. But the 6-foot-9 Aguilar failed to adjust to the speed and physicality of American basketball that had him struggling in his two years with the Hilltoppers. Aguilar was invited to a two-day workout with the New Orleans Hornets but their scout, Don Sellers, said that he remained a “work in progress” and was not yet ready for the NBA. Then, he was drafted in the seventh round by the Santa Cruz Warriors in the NBA D-League but his run also didn’t last long as he was eventually relegated to being a practice player until he was waived. Aguilar’s Gilas Pilipinas teammates — Ray Parks and Kiefer Ravena — also tried their luck with the NBA but their journeys only brought them as far as the NBA D-League. Veteran international campaigner Jojo Lastimosa was spot on with his observation: In this time and age, making it to the NBA is harder than it used to be. It’s no longer height that matters, but the mentality, work ethic, international exposure, and overall skill set that are the most important. For Sotto to make it to the NBA, he has to develop a reliable outside shot and quicker feet that will make him deadly in pick-and-roll attacks and enable him to switch to smaller, faster players at the defensive end. He also has to spend a lot of time getting exposed to American basketball, where giants like Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokic are shooting, running, attacking, and dribbling like skilled playmakers. Sotto is a generational talent. He is our only hope to break the solid walls of the NBA, where only 450 roster spots are available. If he doesn’t make it, maybe — just maybe — it’s time for us to abandon our NBA dream. The post Great Brown Hope appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
No charges in Britney Spears incident with Wembanyama security: police
The member of NBA top draft pick Victor Wembanyama's security detail who allegedly struck pop star Britney Spears in the face will not be charged, Las Vegas police said Friday. Wembanyama is in Las Vegas this week ahead of his first game in the NBA Summer League, and was heading to a restaurant Wednesday night when he was spotted by fans -- and Spears. Media reports said that Spears was pushed away by Wembanyama's entourage, and the singer posted on Instagram that a security guard "backhanded me in the face... Nearly knocking me down and causing my glasses (to fall) off my face." Spears's husband Sam Asghari said the incident was "violent" and "out of control," posting on social media that his wife had been "hit in the face." But the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said Friday that officers had concluded their "investigation of the alleged battery." "No charges will be filed against the person involved," said a statement. Wembanyama, who is due to make his much-hyped debut against Charlotte on Friday evening, told reporters he only heard hours later Wednesday that Spears was involved. "I don't know with how much force but security pushed her away and I didn't stop to look so I kept walking and enjoyed a nice dinner," said the Frenchman. Spears said she had simply wanted to greet and congratulate the player. The post No charges in Britney Spears incident with Wembanyama security: police appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Review: ‘Sharper’ (2023): Terrific cast, plodding movie
From A24, home of award-winning indie gems, comes this visually gorgeous caper movie starring Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, and John Lithgow. [caption id="attachment_148673" align="aligncenter" width="642"] JULIANNE Moore and John Lithgow.[/caption] Sharper (2023), currently streaming on AppleTV+, opens like a romantic New York tale. In a small, quaint and dreamy Manhattan bookstore, the manager and owner Tom (Justice Smith) falls in love with a new customer — the bookish grad student Sandra (Briana Middleton). [caption id="attachment_148672" align="aligncenter" width="1021"] BRIANA Middleton and Justice Smith in ‘Sharper.’[/caption] It’s all cute, with moody, elegant cinematography from Charlotte Bruus Christensen (All the Old Knives). But considering it’s a crime thriller about con artists swindling their way in New York City, you brace yourself for the anticipated theft that will end their fairytale-like romance. The story is divided into four sections, each following a key character: Tom, Sandra, Max (Stan) and Madeline (Moore). All four people are connected. How they met, as well as their relationship, is slowly revealed as the story unfolds. Each chapter feels episodic, ending with a surprise. While the small and scattered plot twists are fun — albeit some of them predictable — they are not thrilling enough to get you excited for the big conclusion. In fact, after every chapter, I would pause to scroll through Instagram or Shopee, or play with the cat, then resume streaming when I’m too bored to do other things. But Sharper is not a bad movie. It has a terrific cast delivering competent, engaging performances, but it is often plodding, with its dry dialogue and twists that could have been more imaginative. Sharper is intentionally an understated crime drama. It is purposely slow-burn. No wild car chases, no explosive action sequences, just characters outwitting one another — with the movie trying so hard to outsmart its audiences. Who is sharper? Sandra or Max? Madeline or Max? The movie or you? Who is the biggest con artist? Written by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, the movie’s focus is also entirely on the business of conning, not so much on character development — hence you don’t find yourself sympathizing with any of the characters. But for a feature-film directorial debut, it’s not bad at all. This is Benjamin Caron’s first venture into directing a full-length film. The Golden Globe, Emmy and BAFTA-winning Caron previously helmed episodes of hit TV series such as The Crown and the soon-to-be-released Star Wars: Andor on Disney+. Sharper, though, is sharper than most mind-numbing new releases on any streamer. It is worth the look, especially if you’re a fan of Moore — and the prolific Sebastian Stan, who is almost in every streaming movie nowadays. Also, it’s an A24 film — so it is a safe pick if you can’t find anything entertaining to watch. Neither outstanding nor loathsome, Sharper is borderline mediocre, but a decent time-killer. 3 out of 5 stars On Apple TV+ The post Review: ‘Sharper’ (2023): Terrific cast, plodding movie appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
UK royal family unite for King Charles III’s birthday parade
Britain's royal family rounded off King Charles III's inaugural birthday parade Saturday with a balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace to watch a spectacular fly-past. Three of the king's young grandchildren -- future king Prince George, age 9, Prince Louis, 5, and Princess Charlotte, 8 -- joined the rest of the family on the balcony with the princes sporting red ties and blue blazers and Charlotte in a sailor suit with red trim. They were cheered by the crowds who gathered outside the palace and in The Mall, the avenue leading up to it. The air display of some 70 military aircraft, following a 41-gun salute from nearby Green Park in central London, came after bad weather cut short a planned fly-past at Charles's coronation on 6 May. It ended with the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force's aerobatic display team, trailing red, white and blue vapours. Earlier, Charles saddled up for the annual Trooping the Colour parade that marks the British sovereign's official birthday. It was the first time the monarch has ridden at the ceremony since his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1986. Charles, who also took the royal salute, was followed on horseback as he inspected the troops by his eldest son and heir, Prince William, Charles' brother Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, and sister Anne, the Princess Royal. Queen Camilla in a military-inspired red outfit, and William's wife Catherine, the Princess of Wales, who was dressed in green, followed in a carriage. The colourful display of regimental precision and pageantry was the first of 74-year-old Charles's reign. Charles's actual birthday is on 14 November but British sovereigns celebrate twice -- once in private and again in public. See more photos: Colorful display The June parade tradition began in 1748 under King George II, who wanted a celebration in better summer weather, as his own birthday was on 30 October. The televised event kicked off with a procession from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade. Some 1,400 soldiers, 400 musicians and 200 horses took part, led in the parade by Juno, a 10-year-old shire mare, alongside three other Drum Horses -- Perseus, Atlas, and Apollo. Drum Horses are the most senior animals in the army and hold the rank of major. They are traditionally named after figures from Greek mythology. The minutely choreographed event has its origins in the display of colours or flags of different regiments to allow their soldiers to identify them in battle. The 1st Battalion Welsh Guards trooped their colour up and down the ranks this year. The UK is currently experiencing a hot spell which would have made it difficult for the troops in their ceremonial black bearskin hats and thick red tunics. Unlike last weekend, however, when William inspected troops from the Household Division group of senior regiments, none of the soldiers appeared to faint. As Prince of Wales, William is an honorary colonel of the Welsh Guards. Charles -- who as head of state is commander-in-chief of the armed forces -- later led the soldiers back to the palace. Queen Elizabeth last rode her horse, Burmese, a gift from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, at the parade in the mid-1980s. After the horse -- which she rode for 18 years -- was retired in 1986, she decided to use a carriage for Trooping the Colour. Last year's parade was the last for the late queen and formed part of four days of events to mark her record-breaking 70th year on the throne. It was one of her final public appearances before her death, aged 96, in September. The post UK royal family unite for King Charles III’s birthday parade appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
