Mitigate climate change fast, says BBM
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appealed to government entities to swiftly implement solutions that are aligned with the challenges posed by climate change during his visits to flood-affected communities in Bulacan and Pampanga due to recent typhoons and the intensified southwest monsoon or habagat. The President said that the national government is also commencing its masterplan which includes building a big water dam to help stop floods and improve agriculture at the same time. “We won’t return to how things used to be; this is how climate change is now. We can’t do the things we used to do anymore,” Marcos said during the situation briefing in Pampanga. “If nothing is done, flooding will happen again and again even if we dredge.” Marcos also mentioned fixing the dredgers is just a short-term solution, saying that flooding will happen again if the government does not do anything to solve the problem. Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation president Rogelio “Babes” Singson, who previously served as the Public Works and Highways Secretary during the Aquino administration, suggested building a 200-hectare water storage space in the Candaba swamp in Pampanga. Singson, who was present during the situation briefing, explained that the initiative aims to mitigate flooding in the surrounding regions with lower elevations. Marcos’ plan vs flooding: water dam to catch floods, improve agri
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday called on government entities to implement solutions aligned with the challenges posed by climate change. Marcos made the appeal during his visits to flood-affected communities in Bulacan and Pampanga due to recent typhoons and the intensified southwest monsoon (habagat). "We won't return to how things used to be; this is how climate change is now. We can't do the things we used to do anymore," Marcos said during the situation briefing in Pampanga. Marcos said that the national government has a master plan which includes building a big water dam to help stop floods and improve agriculture at the same time. "If nothing is done, flooding will happen again and again even if we dredge," Marcos said. Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation president Rogelio "Babes" Singson, who previously served as the Public Works and Highways Secretary during the Aquino administration, suggested building a 200-hectare water storage space in the Candaba swamp in Pampanga. Singson, who was present during the situation briefing, explained that the initiative aims to mitigate flooding in the surrounding regions with lower elevations. However, Pampanga Representative Anna York Bondoc disagreed with the suggestion, saying that such a plan could negatively impact the livelihoods of local residents, particularly those engaged in rice farming. Marcos then guaranteed that the government would not do the project without their consent. "If there are people who will be displaced, I will personally guarantee each farmer that they will be transferred to another location that is equally good to ensure they won't encounter difficulties or losses," Marcos said. Marcos also said that the government is planning to raise the North Luzon Expressway bridge in San Simon by 5.2 meters to prevent a recurrence of flooding in the area, adding that they will study other alternative routes. "We'll raise the NLEX so that what recently happened will not happen again. And then we will study alternative routes," Marcos said. For his part, Singson vowed to fix the situation in the San Simon segment to avoid floods since that segment was "very low," with the longest stretch being only 200 meters and the highest point measuring less than 0.7 meters. "The DPWH agreed to let us raise that portion by 0.7 meters, and we will leave a clearance of 4.5 meters. This will allow legally sized trucks to pass through there," Singson said. Marcos also mentioned that fixing the dredgers is just as a short-term solution, as flooding will happen again if the government does not do anything to solve the problem. The latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council showed that more than 3.2 million individuals across the country had been impacted by Typhoons "Egay" and "Falcon" and the intensified southwest monsoon. The Department of Agriculture assessed the total agricultural damage resulting from the combined impact of the inclement weather at P4.66 billion. Preliminary evaluations by the NDRRMC indicated that the initial destruction to infrastructure is estimated at P3.6 billion. Senate inquiry on Afghans wasteful exercise
There is an obvious attempt at grandstanding and self-projection when a lawmaker proposed a Senate investigation on the issue of Afghans coming over for a temporary stay owing to their being persecuted in their country as former employees or allies of the United States government. It is being made to appear that the US has demanded from our country the acceptance of these Afghan refugees. It is being floated as well that their stay is a threat to national security with the implied innuendo that they could be terrorists or that they are being sent here to spy on us. The proponent of the senate inquiry is a re-electionist in the 2025 senatorial elections, hence like those who would seek re-election of their present positions, and those aspiring to be in the upper chamber of Congress, this senator is jumping at every opportunity to be in the news for the much-needed media mileage. In the first place, the US government is not demanding or compelling our country to give them shelter. This writer is no fan of the former colonialmasters but common sense will tell us that the US government will not dare compel us to do something against our will. It knows better than to employ such a crude and outrageous move which is tantamount to an assault on our territorial integrity and sovereignty. As officially and clearly explained by the Philippine Ambassador to the United States, Babes Romualdez, the matter of the Afghan refugees coming to the Philippines was a “ request that was made by the United States in October last year via a ‘concept note’ outlining the proposal for the Philippines to temporarily host Afghan nationals — especially those who were formerly employed by the US government and their qualified dependents — while they wait for the SIV application to be processed by the US Embassy in Manila.“ Contrary to what the initiator would like the public to believe, the proposal was not kept from the public. It was coursed thru the usual bureaucratic process. The request was made to the PMS (Presidential Management Staff), and the latter referred it to the Department of Foreign Affairs which, acting as the lead agency, in turn, endorsed the US proposal to various government agencies, e.g. Department of National Defense, Department of Justice, the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The National Bureau of Investigation and the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency were invited to assess the security implications of the proposal as well as to evaluate the background of the Afghan nationals. In other words, it was not a cloak and dagger thing. There was transparency at the very inception. In its request, the US government made it clear that the Afghan nationals applying for the SIV will only stay temporarily and at its expense. Perhaps it is important to consider the fact that these Afghans were formerly employed with the US government before the Taliban seized power, and for that reason their continued stay in Afghanistan put their lives and their families in peril. Our country has a history of giving succor to refugees and those displaced because of war and armed atrocities in their countries. It will be recalled that in 1934 President Manuel L. Quezon for humanitarian reasons gave haven to Jewish refugees fleeing from the Nazis. At the height of the Vietnam War, thousands of Vietnamese fled their country riding in boats. They found sanctuary in our country because our race cannot turn our backs on fellow human beings in dire need of refuge. Even without the request of the US government to house the Afghan nationals temporarily, by reason of their endangered situation, the Filipinos given their compassionate and generous hearts would welcome them if the Afghans themselves so request. And even if they don’t ask us, should other countries shut their doors to them, it is an absolute certainty that our country would invite them here for their shelter and safety. So what is the Senate investigation for, but a waste of time and the people’s money? It is also a venue for publicity and self-aggrandizement. We already have enough of that nauseous exercise. Instead of a useless legislative probe, legislation should take top priority. The post Senate inquiry on Afghans wasteful exercise appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Katya Santos prefers living-in to outright marriage
If she had her way, actress Katya Santos could have tried living in instead of marrying right away her now estranged husband. The 41-year-old Santos, known for her stint as front and center of the Viva Hot Babes, said she regretted marrying basketball coach Anton delos Reyes with whom she shares a daughter named Tala. "Nagpakasal ako knowing na akala ko fairytale. Naku, it's a nightmare!" said Santos in an interview. Santos has remained active in teleseryes and is now a mentor in the Vivamax sexy reality show “Pantaxa Laiya.” They married in 2013 but broke up after three years. "Sa akin lang, bago kayo magpakasal, e kilalanin niyo nang mabuti yung lalaking pakakasalan niyo. Kasi iba yung lalaking makakasama niyo 24/7 sa bahay, iba yung nagde-date lang kayo, hinahatid ka pa sa bahay,” she said. "Lalabas lang yung tunay na ugali niyo sa isa't isa kapag magkasama na kayo sa bahay," added Santos who bared that her parents didn’t approve of live-in situation back then. "Kasi masyado akong, 'Shucks, gusto ko magpakasal. Gusto ko ng happily ever after,'” Santos recalled. "Masyado ako napaniwala sa ganun kasi yun din sa family ko, e. Mga kapatid ko maayos (yung marriage), ganyan. So gusto ko ganun din.” But Santos said she has no regrets because she has a fulfilled life juggling her acting career and as a single mom. Britons party for King Charles III’s coronation
Ashley Green, United Kingdom — In the central English village of Ashley Green, Britons marking the coronation of King Charles III gathered Sunday to celebrate with traditional party food, patriotic songs and plenty of good cheer. After rain soaked people lining the coronation procession route a day earlier, organizers were taking no chances. The inside of the small village hall in Buckinghamshire, northwest of London, was decked out in red, white and blue bunting and balloons with long tables for 100 people. With people bringing their own savory food as well as a sweet dish to share, the dessert table was soon groaning under the weight of homemade delicacies. There were huge sherry trifles, plates of scones oozing with jam and clotted cream, “summer puddings” made from bread and red berries and endless meringues. Little girls dressed in festive colors and with Union Jack ribbons in their hair eyed the table longingly. “I think it’s lovely,” Annette Cathcart, 67, told AFP. “I think you need these things to bring the community together. People spend as much or as little as they want. It’s the perfect way to celebrate.” Across the UK, as many as 67,000 similar parties were taking place on Sunday as part of the coronation festivities. Rob Barnes, 42, a retail tech boss, who was part of the community association that organized the Ashley Green event, said the best thing about the street parties was that it didn’t matter if you were a monarchist or not. “I didn’t actually watch the coronation myself. My wife and my daughters did but I have mixed feelings about the royal family. It’s about coming together as a community,” he said, adding that it was a “very diverse group with people in their nineties and children and babes in arms”. Retired scientist and royalist Katherine Hyde told AFP the party represented the village at its best. The country needed more “community spirit”, she said praising King Charles for his charity work. Younger generations focused too much on the online world and risked “missing out” on the support that comes from meeting people in person and sharing a meal, she added. New Zealander Graeme Nation, 50, said he was “ambivalent” about the monarchy, describing himself as a “live and let live sort of person”. He said he had come to “celebrate a little bit, but mainly to support the community, be with friends and have a nice time.” The IT manager from the nearby town of Chesham said he felt the difficult economic times the country was going through were “all the more reason to celebrate”. As for the rain, he’d “come to learn that with the great British weather you just get on with it like they did yesterday,” he said. The meal over, another volunteer stepped forward to rig up a sound system for a singalong. Soon “Rule Britannia”, “Jerusalem” and “Land of Hope and Glory” were blasting out with the community joining in enthusiastically. “Sweet Caroline” had them up on their feet, waving their arms and swaying from side to side, before “Auld Lang Syne” and the national anthem wrapped things up. Outside on the village green, the dark rain clouds that had been threatening to strike all day finally gave way to some intermittent sunshine. Benilde seals perfect season
College of Saint Benilde crushed Lyceum University of the Philippines, 25-19, 25-11, 25-20, to retain the Season 98 National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball crown via sweep yesterday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan. The Game 2 victory in the best-of-three series was the Lady Blazers’ 29th stretching back to January 2020 and was made possible by the precious contributions of Gayle Pascual, who hit 15 points, and Finals Most Valuable Player Jade Gentapa, who had 13. Also making her presence felt was Cloanne Mondonedo, who had 23 excellent sets. The win, which culminated its perfect season, allowed Saint Benilde to hold a double celebration as it was also head coach Jerry Yee’s 49th birthday. “Honestly, this championship was harder. We had a few five-set games along the way and we had to adjust,” said Yee, who gave the school its third league title. “I’m happy that in the end, we were able to get the championship,” he added. Johna Dolorito was the only Lady Pirate to score in double digits with 11 points. Meanwhile, San Beda University clawed out of a 0-2 hole for a 17-25, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23, 15-11 win over University of Perpetual Help System Dalta in Game 2 of the men’s volleyball tournament. Kenrod Umali and rookie Ralph Cabalsa both scored 19 points each as the Red Spikers snapped the Altas’ 32-game winning streak that started back in Game 2 of the Season 93 Finals against Arellano University on 19 February 2018. Both San Beda and Perpetual will play for all the marbles on Sunday in the same San Juan venue. Red Spikers head coach Ariel de la Cruz said the team’s positive mindset despite the odds proved vital. “It has to start with me. I have to motivate them and elevate them so that whatever mistake that happens, we work together and fix it,” De la Cruz said. “It starts when you enter the court with a smile and enjoy the game.” San Beda started the fifth set with a 6-2 lead and never looked back as Cabalsa fired an off-the-block kill for the win. Season 98 MVP Louie Ramirez led the way for the losers with 32. An awarding ceremony took place before the matches kicked off with individual awards being given to the tournament’s other top performers. John Benedict San Andres of Mapua University was hailed as the 1st Best Outside Spiker while Emilio Aguinaldo College’s Joshua Ramilo took home the 2nd Best Outside Spiker award. Letran College’s Vinze Himzon won both Rookie of the Year and 1st Best Middle Blocker awards while Jethro Cabillan of Arellano University took the 2nd Best Middle Blocker award. Adrian Villados of the Chiefs was hailed as the Season 98 Best Setter with Perpetual’s Joshua Zareno taking the Best Opposite Spiker plum and Lawrence Briones of EAC getting the Best Libero honors. In the women’s tournament, Mary Rhose Dapol was hailed as both the MVP and the 1st Best Outside Spiker of Season 98 with teammates Shaila Omipon and Marian Anday picked the Rookie of the Year and Best Libero, respectively. Gentapa likewise took home the 2nd Best Outside Spiker while teammate Pascual got the tournament’s Best Opposite Spiker title. Lyceum team captain Venice Puzon picked up her second Best Setter diadem with fellow Lady Pirate Jaja Tulang voted as the 2nd Best Middle Blocker. Arellano’s Trina Abay took home the 1st Best Middle Blocker award. The post Benilde seals perfect season appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
