Aces of design
The search for the brightest and most creative interior designers and architects in the country continues after Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines Inc. turned on the green light with a theme launch of the Asia Young Designer Awards — a platform designed to inspire students to develop their skills through cross-learning opportunities and networking with key industry players, as well as with their fellow peers in the region. Held at the Quezon Hall 1 of Seda Vertis in Diliman, Quezon City, the event encouraged students of Interior Design and Architecture to use their talents in transforming future environments and creating a significant impact in the succeeding generations through practical design solutions that help address pressing issues of our time. Now on its 15th year, this year’s AYDA Awards carries the theme “Converge: Championing Purposeful Design,” which is a fitting reflection of Nippon Paint’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of creative excellence. This year’s theme is about finding your core and what you truly believe in before manifesting it into your design. It focuses on a designer’s journey in searching for a cause worth fighting for. What we believe, and invest in, may change over a period of time. The use of the word “converge,” on the other hand, refers to that situation when a point or a line meets — leading to a common result. “The AYDA Awards would like to help shape a future where designers from different backgrounds, cultures and regions can learn from each other and deliver the best possible solution to common and underlying social challenges,” explained Giselle Campos, sales and marketing manager of Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines Inc. “Today, as designers face the challenge of providing a balance between sustainability and urbanization, and at a time when digitalization has already taken over interpersonal bonding, we believe that going local should also be considered fit for global appreciation,” she added. Aside from formally jumpstarting this year’s awards program, and explaining the contest mechanics, the launch was also used to introduce some of the biggest names in the industry who have agreed to serve as judges for the awards program. Leading the panel of adjudicators this year are Ar. Eduardo Casares (architecture category head judge), the brains behind the structure of the Tutuban Center in Divisoria, and IDr. Wilmer Lopez (interior design category head judge), president and creative director of Space Encounters, an interior design firm that specializes in interior branding and mid-century modern furniture. US surgeons report longest successful pig-to-human kidney transplant
US surgeons who transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into a brain-dead patient announced Thursday they had ended their experiment after a record-breaking 61 days. The latest experimental procedure is part of a growing field of research aimed at advancing cross-species transplants, mainly testing the technique on bodies that have been donated for science. There are more than 103,000 people waiting for organ transplants in the United States, 88,000 of whom need kidneys. "We have learned a great deal throughout these past two months of close observation and analysis, and there is great reason to be hopeful for the future," said Robert Montgomery, director of the New York University Langone Transplant Institute, who led the surgery in July. It was the the fifth so-called xenotransplant performed by Montgomery, who also carried out the world's first genetically modified pig kidney transplant in September 2021. Tissue collected during the study indicated a mild rejection process had begun, requiring intensification of immunosuppression medication. By "knocking out" the gene responsible for a biomolecule called alpha-gal -- a prime target for roving human antibodies -- the NYU Langone team were able to stop immediate rejection. The donor pig in this experiment came from a herd cultivated by Virginia-based biotech company Revivicor. The herd has also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a source of meat for people with hypersensitivity to the alpha-gal molecule, an allergy caused by some tick bites. These pigs are bred, not cloned, meaning the process can be more easily scaled. Early xenotransplantation research focused on harvesting organs from primates -- for example, a baboon heart was transplanted into a newborn known as "Baby Fae" in 1984, but she survived only 20 days. Current efforts focus on pigs, which are thought to be ideal donors for humans because of their organ size, their rapid growth and large litters, and the fact they are already raised as a food source. In January 2022, surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical School carried out the world's first pig-to-human transplant on a living patient -- this time involving a heart. He died two months after the milestone, with the presence of porcine cytomegalovirus in the organ later blamed. Last week, Chinese scientists published a paper showing they had succeeded in hybrid pig-human kidneys in pig embryos, an alternative approach that also has the potential to one day help address organ donation shortages. But the development raised ethical issues -- especially since some human cells were also found in the pigs' brains, experts said. Back to life
Geppetto climbed a few steps in front of an eager crowd, in comic exaggeration of the difficulties of old age. Bent over and moving pendulously, he made his small audience giggle as he took each “labored” step. “Pinocchio, did you lie again?” one imagines him thinking. More likely: “Goodness, how many times shall I pose with this crowd today?” The fairy tale woodcarver brought to life at Tokyo DisneySea was hilarious, but to some of those who had come to that magical world, it looked too much like reality, creaking bones and all. Too much “life” had us scrambling for some “fiction.” Relentless optimism was no match for some harsh realities, the top ones being pain, anxiety, and recurring issues. It went so that I would stare for far too long at a blank page, my mind cloudy. Or I would start to think of a social media post, then change my mind. When I couldn’t even bring myself to share what should have been a mindless IG story (just too tired, or too sick and tired), I knew I had closed off again. A quick escape to the “happiest place on Earth” was just what the doctor ordered. Tokyo’s top two theme parks offer distractions that not only lift the spirits, but give a new lease to a deadened imagination. Rediscovering one’s inner child, remembering simpler times — it was much more than the usual break. It’s not entirely bad to want to escape reality if only to gain some equilibrium. An article by Orin Gray in lifehacker.com goes: “As the world somehow continues to spin despite everything, it can be vital to your sanity to take a step back, when you can, and distance yourself from the stress of work, the deluge of news, and the pressure of your responsibilities.” He then gives his top 10 ways to escape reality. Of course, escaping reality is only a good temporary measure for mental health. If anything, we need to learn to face our challenges head-on so that we can find the best solutions. Perennial problems in the country alone, however, seem too overwhelming — corruption, poverty, hunger, inequality, injustice. Various forms of these supposed aberrations pop into our consciousness too often these days, from child beggars carrying babies on the streets to expensive rice, disgruntled farmers and untended agricultural lands, luxury cars lording it over ill-maintained highways and motorcycles wending their way in and out of traffic that had returned in full force. Is there an end to corruption that robs our people of decent basic services, a cleaner environment, and a better life? Some countries show that this is possible to achieve. Travel opens our eyes and takes us out of realities we come to take for granted just because they have always been there. We had become numb enough to not ask for something better. We are stuck in cocoons we created just to shield our eyes from the truth. Disrupting our routines, doing something completely different, taking ourselves out of the usual — these can give a fresh infusion of imagination into our labored brains. We all need it sometimes.
