Muntinlupa, Imus still streaking in MPBL

The streak keeps on going for Muntinlupa and Imus even as last Thursday even as the two teams pulled off contrasting wins over their respective rivals in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta-Datu Cup at the Imus Sports Complex in Cavite. The Cagers survived a near meltdown before holding on for a 77-76 win over the Parañaque Patriots. Muntinlupa had to hold its breath before notching its seventh straight win as it squandered a 31-point lead in the third period and watched Parañaque chop the lead slowly but surely. The Cagers were still comfortably ahead, 73-50, inside the final seven-minute mark when the Patriots let their defense do the work, holding their rivals to just a lone field goal. Ryusei Koga came through with a triple then completed a steal, setting up Ivan Valenzuela for two free throws for a 77-74 count with only five seconds left in the game. Koga gave up a duty foul to stop the clock, but put more pressure on Chito Jaime to make at least one of his two free throws. The ex-pro forward missed the first, then made the second then Harold Arboleda let loose a triple that went in as time expired, making Jaime’s split charities earlier more significant. Arboleda led all scorers with 21 points, but also contributed 10 rebounds for his 10th double-double performance in the league, the most completed by any player in the young two-season history of the fastest growing regional amateur basketball league in the country.    Muntinlupa coach Aldrin Morante admitted that his wards relaxed too much when it built a big lead, but blamed himself as well for experimenting on using different combinations, particularly in giving more playing time to the second stringers. In the nightcap, Imus streaked to its fourth straight win after outplaying Pampanga, 88-76, to improve its win-loss record to 5-3 and forge a tie for second spot in the Southern Division. The Bandera, however, needed to survive a 36-point explosion from Juneric Baloria before extending its winning streak. Baloria’s 36 markers is the new all-time record for most points in a game......»»

Another big game from Vosotros sends Caloocan streaking in MPBL

Almond Vosotros, the newest Supremo, delivered once again to give Caloocan its second straight win in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta-Datu Cup. A longtime member of the Gilas Pilipinas program, Vosotros came away with 21 points, including a free throw in the dying seconds that ensured the Supremos' 74-69 triumph over the Imus Bandera last Wednesday at the Imus Sports Complex. Following back-to-back victories in the tournament, Caloocan has improved its win-loss record to 4-8 in the tough northern division. Vosotros, who had a brief stint playing in the PBA for the Blackwater Elite, made that possible after averaging 22 points per game in his first two outings. The loss was the first at home for the Bandera, who now slipped to 5-6 after suffering their third straight loss. Earlier, Valenzuela got back on the winning track and won its first game under new head coach Eric Samson as the Classic won over the Pampanga Lanterns, 90-82. Paolo Hubalde had a breakout game, finishing with 25 points. He capped his game-long brilliance by adding 10 rebounds to come away with a double-double effort. Kido Cabrera and Chris de Chavez added 11 points apiece while Floyd Dedicatoria and Ford Ruaya chipped in 10 each in a display of balance firepower by Valenzuela.   The win was also a promising sign for Samson, who filled in the void left by former PBA mentor Chris Gavina. Gavina stepped down form his post after the Classic struggled in the elimination round, paving the way for the entry of Samson......»»

MPBL: Munti tops San Juan in battle of unbeaten teams

Only one between Muntinlupa and San Juan was going to stay spotless at the end of their heavyweight bout in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta-Datu Cup. That only one proved to be the home team Cagers as Allan Mangahas rallied them to a well-earned 77-71 win over the Knights last Wednesday at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex. Mangahas dropped 21 points on top of five assists, four rebounds, and three blocks and was backstopped by Chito Jaime and Dave Moralde who scored 17 and 15 markers, respectively. Behind those three, the home team erased a 20-point deficit early in the third quarter. With that, Muntinlupa rose to 5-0 in the standings. They are now the only undefeated team in the tournament. For San Juan, Larry Rodriguez topped the scoring column with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and five blocks. John Wilson and Rian Ayonayon also chipped in 13 and 12 markers, respectively, as they suffered their first setback in six games. In the day’s other matchup, Imus downed Valenzuela, 81-71. Genmar Bragais poured in 20 points while Ian Melencio stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, eight rebounds, and eight assists as the Bandera improved to 3-3. Ford Ruaya paced the 2-3 Classic with 13 points and nine rebounds. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

MPBL: Navotas-Munti matchup suspended as Neypes triple try breaks ring

A faulty basketball ring has left the game between Navotas and Muntinlupa hanging after the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League decided to suspend the matchup at the Navotas Sports Complex last Saturday. Apparently, one of the rings got nearly disconnected following a three-point attempt by Navotas' Kyle Neypes at 1:34 in the fourth quarter of the matchup between the Clutch and the Cagers in the 2018 Anta-Datu Cup. The Clutch's Michole Sorela was still able to sink in a follow-up when game officials decided to halt the match for safety purposes. Muntinlupa was leading the game in overtime, 98-95, when it was suspended.  The Cagers could have walked away with a fourth victory if not for the stoppage. The Clutch's record, on the other hand, remained at 2-2. In the first game, the Bataan Risers turned back the Imus Bandera, 95-85. Former PBA cager Byron Villarias unloaded 25 points to lift the Risers past the Bandera. It was the fourth consecutive win by Bataan, which improved to 4-1. The loss was the third in four games for Imus......»»

At least 24 teams to do battle in MPBL’s second conference

The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) is just getting started in its aim of giving a bigger stage for players from all over the country the chance to shine. And now, the upstart league will have a 24-strong stable of squads all ready and raring to push it farther. “The vision of the league is to give a chance to homegrown players. Now may 24 teams tayo, we’re still striving to be a place for many more homegrown players,” commissioner Kenneth Duremdes said in the league-wide owners’ meeting on Wednesday at the Raffles Hotel in Makati. Last month, the MPBL closed the curtain on what was a successful first conference with the Batangas Athletics topping nine other teams to win the league’s inaugural championship. Then, the Bataan Defenders (now Risers), Bulacan Kuyas, Caloocan Supremos, Imus Bandera, Muntinlupa Cagers, Navotas Clutch, Paranaque Patriots, Quezon City Capitals, and Valenzuela Classic rounded out the leaderboard. Now, at least 14 new squads will be challenging both Batangas and the already established league hierarchy. Joining the MPBL are the the Cebu Sharks, Davao Occidental Tigers, General Santos Warriors, Laguna Heroes, Makati Skyscrapers, Mandaluyong El Tigre, Manila Stars, Pasay Voyagers, Pampanga Lanterns, Pasig Pirates, San Juan Knights, and Zamboanga Valientes. Rizal and Marikina are also new members of the league, but their monickers are yet to be determined. Meanwhile, Basilan and Sta. Rosa have also signified their intent to compete, but their memberships are yet to be finalized. Whatever the final number of teams is, Duremdes has no doubt that the league will only be bigger and better in its second conference tipping off in June. “You can expect every game to be a full-packed game. Yun yung naging initial success ng liga - yung nakakalaro yung sinasabi nating local heroes,” he said. League owners are still discussing the format, scheduling, and venues of the tournament as of press time. What’s sure is that the games will all be in Luzon. “Big thanks to our teams from the south kasi they all agreed na yung games nila, Luzon muna,” the commissioner said. If and when any from Cebu, Davao Occidental, General Santos, or Zamboanga make the playoffs, though, then the MPBL will have to consider granting them home games. “Kung nakapasok sila ng playoffs, who knows, yun yung chance nila to host home games,” Duremdes remarked. —— Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

MPBL: Zamboanga comes from behind to frustrate Caloocan

Zamboanga shackled Caloocan in the last seven minutes as the Valientes were able to hold their rivals without a field goal on their way to a 72-67 come from behind triumph in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup at the Strike Gymnasium in Bacoor. Trailing by seven, 62-55, after Rene Pacquiao scored on a lay up in the 7:08 mark of the final period, the Valientes then worked double time on the defensive end and shut down the Supremos. In between the stops made by Zamboanga, Reed Juntilla caught fire to complete the team’s comeback. The former Barako Bull player nearly single handedly outscored the Supremos  in the entire fourth period as he knocked in 13 of his 18 points. The Supremos could only come up with 13 markers in the fourth and all of their points in the last seven minutes came via free throws before Paul Sanga hit a buzzer-beating triple at the end of regulation for the final tally. With the win, Zamboanga got back on the winning track, picking up its sixth win in 13 games and moving up to the eighth spot of the southern division of this tournament.  The Supremos absorbed their first back-to-back losses since acquiring Almond Vosotros, the tournament’s leading scorer, who was just held to only eight points. They picked up their 10th loss in 14 games to stay at 11th spot. Parañaque survived Imus in a thrilling finish, 82-81, to move up to fifth spot in the southern division. Mac Montilla hit a backbreaking trey while Robin Roño played a career game and made the crucial free throws that ensured for the Patriots their eighth win in 15 games. Montilla’s triple in the 1:48 mark of regulation shoved the Patriots ahead, 80-76. After both teams traded unproductive thrusts, Gab Banal finally stopped the bleeding with a drive to the basket that put the Strikers within a basket. Forced to give up a foul, the Strikers sent Roño, who hit two free throws in the last 19 seconds, but Bacoor refused to quit as Mark Montuano knocked in a triple from deep right, putting his team within striking distance, 82-81, with six seconds to go. Off an inbound play, Montuano forced an error on Roño, who lost control of the ball at the baseline, allowing Bacoor to map up a final play.   Banal, who was playing steadily all game long, turned from hero to goat as he drove to the basket, but decided to pass it out at the last second as time expired......»»
