Disappointing end, promising future for Prescott-led Cowboys

STEPHEN HAWKINS, AP Sports Writer   ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is more convinced than ever that his rookie quarterback can play at the highest level. And that the Cowboys were good enough to maybe win the Super Bowl this season with Dak Prescott and fellow rookie Ezekiel Elliott. But another Super Bowl shot will have to wait for another season after an impressive Prescott-led comeback came up just short in the NFC divisional playoff game against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, who won 34-31 on a game-ending field goal Sunday. 'I know now that this team was capable of playing all the way through this thing, and even with rookies in key spots I know now we were ready to have a win,' Jones said. 'We didn't. That's very real. ... It hurts, it really hurts.' After the Cowboys were down 21-3 midway through the second quarter, their largest deficit in a season when they won 13 games and were the NFC's top seed, Prescott threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Dez Bryant. Prescott, who replaced injured veteran Tony Romo in the preseason, threw two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. After finding Bryant again, Prescott powered through the middle for the 2-point conversion that tied the game at 28. Then came the exchange of long field goals only 58 seconds apart after the two-minute warning before Rodgers and the Packers got one more shot, and set up Mason Crosby's 51-yard field goal. Asked about his emotions, Prescott responded, 'I think as low as they could get at this point. This is a terrible feeling.' Prescott threw for 302 yards while becoming the first rookie in the Super Bowl era with three TD passes in a playoff game. After his lone interception in the third quarter, the Cowboys responded with one off Rodgers. Elliott ran for 125 yards. With the loss, the Cowboys (13-4) have now failed to make it past the divisional game in their nine playoff appearances since winning their most recent Super Bowl 21 seasons ago. 'Once we put that behind us, I think there's nothing but good things looking forward in what this team can do,' Prescott said. Prescott had an 11-game winning streak during the regular season, and kept the starting job after Romo was ready to return from the back injury he suffered in the third preseason game. Jones wasn't yet ready to address the future for Romo, a starter for 10 seasons. 'We'll obviously look at what we're doing. We won't do it tomorrow. We won't do it the next day,' Jones said. 'We'll be looking at where we are relative to Tony and relative to other players, but not tonight.' After Mason Crosby kicked a tiebreaking 56-yard field goal for Green Bay with 1:33 left, Prescott was ready for another shot. 'He didn't blink. He didn't do anything but lead, as well as play, in a way that you can win championships,' Jones said. The only thing Prescott thought of was the two-minute drills that end Thursday practices. 'I don't think about what this means, what this exact drive means, just concentrate on each and every play coach called,' he said. Prescott had two completions for 35 yards to the 40 before spiking the ball to stop the clock. After a 7-yard completion to Cole Beasley, Prescott's third-and-2 pass was knocked down at the line. Dan Bailey then kicked his third field goal, but Rodgers — who with the Packers won a Super Bowl in the same building six seasons ago — still had 35 seconds. His scrambling 36-yard pass to a toe-dragging Jared Cook on the sideline set up the winning kick. 'It was a great game all the way around, just hate to be on the losing end,' Prescott said. 'These are games I dreamed of as a little kid of playing, and plan to play in many more of them.' .....»»

No masking truth that Cabagnot is Player of the Week

It seems like there’s no stopping San Miguel playmaker Alex Cabagnot these days - not even a depressed nasal fracture. Though advised by doctors to undergo surgery, Cabagnot managed to still get a green light to play, provided he wears a facial mask to protect his injured nose. Except for that mask, nothing has changed for the left-handed guard who averaged 15.0 points, 4.5  rebounds, and 3.0 assists as the Beermen went 2-0 in a span of three days to become the first Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week awardee in 2017. The 34-year-old Cabagnot beat the likes of fellow Beermen Arwind Santos and June Mar Fajardo, Rain or Shine’s Jericho Cruz, NLEX guard Carlo Lastimosa, and GlobalPort’s high-scoring gunner Terrence Romeo for the citation for the period of December 28, 2016-January 8, 2017. Although he felt uncomfortable playing with the facial mask the first time he wore it last Friday, Cabagnot managed to heat up fast, firing 10 points in the opening period to set the tone for San Miguel, which went on to clobber Blackwater, 118-93. The win helped San Miguel gain the first playoff spot in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup. The University of Hawaii-Hilo standout finished the game with a near double-double output of 14 points and 9 rebounds against the Elite. Two days later, Cabagnot helped San Miguel get the upper hand after banging nine of his 16 points in the third period as the Beermen scraped past Brgy. Ginebra, 72-70, and improved to a tournament-best 7-1. Opting for surgery would have forced Cabagnot to miss the rest of the conference, a scenario that the SMB guard wouldn’t want to happen. “And I'll miss part of the Commissioner's Cup (if he underwent surgery), but we're in the middle of the season now and there are certain things you gotta do and you gotta take care of. Put the priorities at hand first,” he said. .....»»

Hofmann retains middleweight title, three new URCC champs crowned

Reigning two-division URCC champ Chris Hofmann picked up where he left off in 2016, starting the new year with a gigantic TKO win over David Douglas to retain the newly-elevated URCC world middleweight title at URCC 29: Conquest, Saturday at the Kezar Pavillion, San Francisco, California.  Hofmann, who made history in 2016, capturing the URCC light heavyweight and middleweight crowns, made quick work of Douglas, arguably his most experienced opponent yet, stopping Douglas in the first round.  In the other title defense of the night, Will Chope's night wasn't as successful as he dropped the URCC world lightweight championship to Brazilian Fabricio Guerreiro via first round submission.  Two new interim world flyweight champions were also crowned, as Fil-American Derrick Easterling stopped Mefi Monterroso via second round submission to become the URCC interim world flyweight champion, while Jamie Thorton also submitted Jaymee Nievera in the first round to claim the URCC interim women's world flyweight champion.  Easterling and Thorton will likely meet reigning URCC flyweight and women's flyweight champions CJ De Tomas and Geli Bulaong to unify the titles. Catch the telecast of URCC 29: Conquest on Friday, January 13, 10:30 PM on S+A channel 23.  br />   .....»»

Rodgers on a roll and has Packers looking unstoppable

The Associated Press br /> Forget Dak Prescott, Tom Brady, and Matt Ryan. Aaron Rodgers has probably been the NFL's top quarterback since Thanksgiving in late November. He's re-established that dynamic connection with receiver Jordy Nelson for the Green Bay Packers, and Ty Montgomery's emergence as a receiver-turned-running back has been a revelation. Rodgers is on a roll, and when he gets going, the Packers look unstoppable, capable of building big leads and coming back from any deficit. After a 1-2 start in 2014, Rodgers famously admonished fans to R-E-L-A-X. This season, after a 4-6 start, he promised to 'run the table' and led them to another NFC North division title. They feature in the showcase of wild-card playoffs weekend, when they host Eli Manning and the New York Giants on Sunday. The playoff history between the Packers and Giants is rich. For the record, the Packers have a 4-3 edge. The Giants won the first matchup and the NFL title in 1938, beating the Packers 23-17. The Packers won the next four games and NFL championships in 1939, '44, 61 and '62. The Giants won the last two playoff games in 2008 and 2012, both at Lambeau Field, and went on to win the Super Bowls. The Packers' weakness is in defense, where the secondary is depleted. The offense has been on a remarkable run of mistake-free football during their six-match winning streak, but they could be hard-pressed to keep up in high-scoring games like they were during a midseason four-game slump. The Giants are showing elements of the frenzied pass rush and opportunistic defense that won them their last two NFL crowns. Over the last 11 games, opponents have averaged just 16 points against the Giants. They need that stingy defense because of their ineffective offense. The Giants didn't score 30 points in any game, and haven't even reached 20 points since Nov. 27 against the hapless Cleveland Browns. The running game is so-so, and Manning seems comfortable throwing only to Odell Beckham Jr. Not that it's a bad idea. In the other game on Sunday, Pittsburgh hosts the Miami Dolphins, who turned around their season with an Oct. 16 victory over the Steelers. But Miami is yet another team using a backup quarterback, Matt Moore, after starter Ryan Tannehill was ruled out on Thursday because he wasn't ready to practice on a sprained left knee. If Jay Ajayi can run wild again, Miami has a solid chance. However, the Steelers are a tested bunch and got to rest several key players in the regular season finale, including Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell. Wild-card weekend begins with the Oakland Raiders, one of the AFC's powers until the past three weeks, traveling to the Houston Texans on Saturday, followed by the Detroit Lions at the Seattle Seahawks. Raiders rookie Connor Cook will become the first quarterback in NFL history to make his first start in a playoff game. Derek Carr and Matt McGloin remain injured. Cook had 150 yards passing and a touchdown in his NFL debut last week. Meanwhile, the Texans are going back to the so-far-underwhelming Brock Osweiler after Tom Savage was concussed last week. Neither the Seahawks nor the Lions have been inspiring in the past month, with Detroit throwing away the NFC North crown with three straight closing defeats, and Seattle kicking away a bye by splitting its final six games. These are two of the worst running teams in American football, but Seattle has gotten back Thomas Rawls, which could make for a distinct edge. The Seahawks also have the better defense, though its been vulnerable against the pass since star safety Earl Thomas broke his left leg a month ago. Detroit's Matthew Stafford is the first quarterback to lead eight game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime since the 1970 merger, but he's been sacked an NFL-most 37 times. The Lions are also down to their third running back. .....»»

The beginning of Jesus’ Galilean ministry

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen. From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him. He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him. He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the Kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people......»»
