Ex-UK leader Johnson to join right-wing broadcaster GB News
Britain's former prime minister Boris Johnson announced Friday that he was joining the right-wing broadcaster GB News, the latest Conservative politician to take a presenting role on the contentious channel. The scandal-tarred Johnson, who was ousted from power last year by Tory MPs and quit as a lawmaker in June, will start his new "presenter, program maker and commentator" post in early 2024, GB News said. The channel was launched in mid-2021, billing itself as a right-wing, pro-Brexit competitor to mainstream broadcasters such as the BBC and Sky News, and has stoked controversy ever since. It has drawn comparisons to the US network Fox News for its unabashedly populist agenda, blurring the distinction between fact-based reporting and opinion while hiring high-profile right-wingers. In its latest setback, the channel sacked two of its presenters this month after an on-air sexism row that generated nearly 8,500 complaints to media watchdog Ofcom. Ofcom has opened several probes into GB News over alleged breaches of the broadcasting code of neutrality for TV news outlets after it hired several prominent members of the ruling Conservatives as presenters. Johnson, 59, said he was "excited" to be joining "an insurgent channel with a loyal and growing following", saying he would be offering his "frank opinions on world affairs". "I will be talking about the immense opportunities for Global Britain -- as well as the challenges -- and why our best days are yet to come," he said. GB News's editorial director Michael Booker called Johnson "the most influential prime minister of our generation". "As well as his political skills, he's an incredibly talented journalist and author," he said. Johnson, a former Daily Telegraph columnist who currently writes a weekly column for The Daily Mail, first worked as a journalist for The Times, where he was sacked for making up a quote. He moved on to become Brussels correspondent for The Daily Telegraph, where he made his name writing exaggerated claims about the European Union, including purported plans to standardize the sizes of condoms and bananas. He then entered politics, becoming an MP in 2001 and later serving two terms as London mayor before realizing his life-long dream of being prime minister in 2019. Ready for it? Belgian university offers literature course on Taylor Swift
A hubbub grips the class in the Belgian city of Ghent as university students eagerly discuss whether US pop star Taylor Swift is a "literary genius". The question elicits passionate responses from students, and it's an exercise their professor hopes will enliven their engagement with more traditional figures of the English Literature canon. The course is among a handful that have popped up at universities around the world as pop titan Swift has racked up hits and awards and as her Eras Tour is expected to set a record for the first billion-dollar tour. "To read her lyrics without the context of the song, it can feel like poetry," one student says, after the teacher opens the floor to discussion. Another student pipes up to suggest it's too soon to say Swift, 33, has had the same cultural impact as William Shakespeare, known around the world for many centuries. While Shakespeare wrote at least 38 plays, Swift has recorded 10 albums. Some will wonder what Shakespeare and his peers share in common with today's biggest US singer-songwriter. Well, they are all the subject of Elly McCausland's course called "Literature (Taylor's Version)" for Master's degree students at Ghent University, which will run until the end of the year. During the first class on Monday, assistant professor McCausland piqued the students' curiosity with controversial questions, including why certain authors and literature are considered timeless, while other books are not valued the same way. McCausland's goal? To make literature more accessible. "I'd like to get people excited about literature, thinking about literature in a new way and realizing that actually even literature from centuries and centuries ago still has something to add to our conversations," she told AFP at the class. 'Swift is a real poet' The 10-session course will use Swift's songs as references for themes and will focus on a series of historic texts including Charlotte Bronte's Villette, lesser known than Jane Eyre. The course has proved popular, with 61 students signed up, twice as many as usual. There are even students from other parts of Belgium. Zina Ringoot, 20, had learned just hours before that she could attend the course and made the 90-minute trip to Ghent from Antwerp in the northeast. "I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan," said Ringoot, an English literature Master's student. "I'm hoping to write my thesis on Taylor Swift's album 'folklore' and how it connects to romanticism. So I thought I would get a lot out of this class." Not everyone in the class is a Swiftie, as her fans call themselves. Joris Verschelde, 21, admitted he was "not that big of a fan" but wanted to "see the connection between the songs and what what we already learned" in the older texts. Laughter often fills the windowless auditorium, despite the fact that serious themes are on the agenda, including feminism, sexism and misogyny. When McCausland asks: "Who are the gatekeepers" of English literature, one student quips: "A bunch of old men!" Even if critics reject comparisons with the canonical greats, Swift has fans even among Shakespeare experts including British academic Sir Jonathan Bate. After attending a concert during Swift's record-breaking Eras tour, Bate wrote in the Sunday Times in April: "I came away with confirmation of a thought I first had 15 years ago: this isn't just high-class showbiz, Taylor Swift is a real poet." Beyond Belgium University courses looking at Swift have been popping up around the world. New York University's Clive Davis Institute launched its first-ever course on Swift last year, and Queen Mary University of London offered a summer school this year looking at Swift through a literary lens. In Arizona, PhD student Alexandra Wormley is hosting a course on the social psychology of Swift at Arizona State University this autumn. Critics online and even some media pundits have pondered just what it is about Swift that is so appealing. For Clio Doyle, an academic who hosted the summer course at Queen Mary, "Swift is a really fascinating songwriter". The lecturer in early modern literature added that another reason she looked at Swift was because of her popularity and the discussions surrounding her work. "A course about Swift would be an opportunity for students both to deepen their readings of Swift's lyrics and to think about what it means to study something as literature," Doyle, who runs a similarly-themed podcast about Swift, told AFP. The summer course will be offered again next year, and interest is not limited to the United States or Europe. The University of Melbourne will host a three-day "Swiftposium" looking at Swift's cultural, economic and global impact in February 2024, the same month her tour arrives in Australia. TOFA honors this year’s Presidential Volunteer Service awardees
The Outstanding Filipinos in America, an organization that honors the achievements of Filipinos in the USA, named the 2023 Presidential Volunteer Service Awardees during the recent awarding ceremony at the Triad Theater in New York City. Founded by New York-based journalist Elton Lugay, TOFA acknowledged individuals who rendered their talents and skills, expertise and wisdom in diverse community events around the United States. The distinction was acknowledged by the office of The White House in Washington, D.C. This year’s recipients included senior creative manager Angelene Coronel, healthcare worker Richie Garcia, special education teacher Deirdre Levy, public health expert Rachelle Peraz Ocampo, civil rights advocate Clifford Robin Temprosa and digital creators Dennis Almario, Chris Labaco, Jonathan Maravilla, Erwin Pajarillo and Eric Relucio. Dominating the roster were artists and performers Arianne Aldecoa, Denise Kara Almario, Bernice Bernabe, Eric Celerio, Marga Empress, Manilyn Gemproso, Asia Guzman, Melody Himarangan, Erno Hormillosa Jr., Gene Juanich, Hansel Mendoza, Morris Montilla, Marcus Oche, Bobby Ramiro, Ellis Young, Hannah Zapanta and Mark Anthony Atienza. Atienza, a graduate of Bachelor of Arts in Music Production from the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, recalled that he was surprised with the recognition. He thought he was just only attending the affair. “I feel honored and blessed to receive this award. It continues to motivate and inspire me to constantly give back to the community,” he said. Since residing in the US since 2021, he sang in Filipino restaurants, including Kabayan and Kusina Pinoy Bistro. Atienza was the opening act of some biggest celebrities’ concerts, such as Morissette Amon, Marcelito Pomoy, Erik Santos, Gary Valenciano and KZ Tandingan. He likewise has been part of special traditional Masses such as Simbang Gabi and social gatherings of the Philippine consulate and the Philippine Independence Day Council Inc. With his determination and passion, Atienza, along with his fellow TOFA singers Almario, Guzman, Relucio, Young, Zapanta, Neeko Delos Santos and Geo Rebucas, showcased their vocal prowess with the US National Anthem during the Filipino Heritage Night at a National Basketball Association game at Madison Square Garden in November 2022. They were also invited to serenade the White House for its Christmas Open House in December 2022. Despite missing his home country, Atienza shared that he temporarily decided to stay abroad because of the opportunities which opened up for his career. “As an independent artist during the pandemic, it was really hard for me because I had no place to perform,” he stated. “No way to somehow make a living with my music.” He lauded all musicians and digital creators in the industry for inspiring him to become a better person. “I hope and pray that with your art and contents that you’re making, you’ll continue to use it to make an impact on our society.” Atienza wrote songs for multimedia companies GMA Music and Viva Music. His original pieces were also featured in the movie Walwal, which was directed by award-winning filmmaker and Benilde Digital Filmmaking chairperson Jose Javier “Joey” Reyes. He recently released his debut album 20/20, which was based on his own experiences of love and heartbreak during the coronavirus pandemic. Logo redesign cheapest, says PAGCOR chair
The once-controversial redesign logo of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation that drew criticism from the public for costing P3 million in government funds is already the “cheapest,” said its chairperson Alejandro Tengco on Monday. Responding to Kabataan Rep. Raoul Manuel’s query during PAGCOR’s briefing on the 2024 national budget before the House Committee on Appropriations, Tengco justified the agency’s spending of P3 million for rebranding the logo was already a steal. In fact, he said, the graphic artist’s act of rebranding the old PAGCOR logo design for P3 million could be perceived as an act of charity. “That’s why that P3 million was very cheap,” Tengco said. During his interpolation, Manuel asked the top PAGCOR official why there was a need to spend such a vast amount, given that other international top brands such as Coca-cola, Twitter and Nike do not spend millions of dollars for such redesigning. “We, in the government, shouldn’t be saving more? And we claim we don’t have fiscal space for other budget items, but for that logo, there is,” Manuel said. The Makabayan lawmaker further noted that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which is also a part of the bureaucracy, did not spend millions of funds to redesign its 10-year-old logo, released in 2020. Manuel also said that the country has many graphic artists that could come up with logos that would not cost much. Tengco, on the other hand, countered that the P3 million paid by PAGCOR not only accounts for the logo itself since the graphic designer also has other deliverables, such as traveling the country to examine various divisions and departments of the agency to install the new logo. Moreover, the PAGCOR chief disclosed to the panel that the modification of their logo was to counter thousands of counterfeit licenses now in circulation. Tengco bared that there have been reports from various regions in the Philippines and other international jurisdictions that there are close to a thousand fake licenses going around now. These fake licenses, he said, are being used for illicit operations worldwide, particularly in London, Turkey, Curacao, and also within the country’s borders. “So we decided to redesign the logo immediately to be able to counter such,” Tengco said, brushing off allegations that the revision of the logo was solely for the luxury of the chairman and the board. “So we have to rebrand. When you rebrand, that means you don’t just do a logo specifically. One, the graphic designer, who was awarded the design, has to ensure that the said logo’s implementation and use will be properly done,” the PAGCOR chief told the panel. Meanwhile, Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez raised concerns that PAGCOR’s new logo could have infringed on the copyrights of Petron, which many believe have comparisons to PAGCOR’s logo. “It’s not only about the expedite of P3 million, but the fact that the logo that you have has a big similarity to the Petro logo. It looks the same,” Rodriguez said. Tengco, however, confidently answered Rodriguez that he himself examined the logo and denied claims that there was intent to duplicate Petron’s. “I have asked the artist, and we have also asked the artist of Petron. So far, nothing. Actually, eight logos were presented to the board,” he said. “Unfortunately, for some, that’s what the board chose. But definitely, the graphic artist had assured us that there was no infringement and there was no attempt to copy such,” Tengco added. From father to son, a staggering inheritance
It could as well have been a list of eligible bachelors. Mark Mateschitz ranks number 30 on the Fortune list of billionaires instead, and as a single 30-year-old, you could say it’s pretty much the same thing. As the only child of the late Austrian billionaire Dietrich “Didi” Mateschitz, who co-founded of the energy drink firm Red Bull in 1987 with Thai businessman Chaleo Yoovidhya (who himself died in 2012, and it must be noted, also handed his 51-percent majority share to his son Chalerm), Mateschitz inherited his father's 49 percent stake when the elder Mateschitz died in October 2022 at the age of 78. Ironically, Mark Mateschitz, who has been dubbed Europe’s richest millennial (estimated net worth: $39.5 billion), did not even carry his father’s name until recently, presumably as a protective measure. He used Gerhardter, his mother Anita’s surname, a ski instructor in her native Austrian. This is perhaps why little is known about his childhood except that he studied at the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg and was often seen with his father at Formula One races. Red Bull is such a prominent advertiser of motorsport, and this visibility is expected to continue under the younger Mateschitz’s helm. When Mark turned 18, his father invited him to work for Red Bull as a senior executive. He seemingly inherited his father’s zeal for drink innovation as Mark launched his own brand in 2018, dubbed The Organics under the Red Bull umbrella. As the name suggests, this includes a whole line of drinks (lemonade, ginger beer, cola, tonic water, etc.) made with alpine water from the Austrian and Swiss Alps. The Alps are known to be one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in the world. It is very reflective of the zeitgeist for brands to reflect millennial aspirations for a clean and healthy lifestyle. This recalls his father’s own epiphany when he was first served Krating Daeng (which translates to red water buffalo) in Thailand, a concoction truck drivers drank for long haul drives, which resulted in creation of Red Bull. After his father died, Mark Mateschitz left his position as Head of Organics at the company to concentrate on his role as a shareholder. He prefers a board of executives to run the company, a decision that has seen comparisons with his father, who was hands-on with the everyday running of Red Bull. Besides Red Bull, Mark is also a shareholder in an Austrian property business. Red Bull sold 11.6 billion cans worldwide in 2022, so Mark Mateschitz’s fortune is very well assured. As to what he will do with that staggering inheritance, shareholders and the world of business can only wait and see.
