Lester Pimentel Ong: The ‘Iron Heart’ director is also a restaurateur
When action films came to a screeching halt around year 2000 because of piracy, then stuntman Lester Pimentel Ong bravely ventured into the food business. For him, it was like wading into untested waters. “Nagsimula ako sa (I started in) Rice-In-A box 23 years ago. I started in the film industry as a stuntman. Nakatrabaho ko si Victor Neri, sa mga films ni direk Toto Natividad. Nawala ‘yung raket namin sa stunts kasi nauso ‘yung piracy sa film. Humina ‘yung action film so wala kaming raket. (I worked with Victor Neri, in the films of director Toto Natividad. We lost our stunt jobs because film piracy became prevalent. Action films slowed down, so we didn’t have a job). With his P80,000 savings, he started his rice-in-a-box business at Masagana City Mall, in Pasay, recalled Ong during the opening of the ninth branch of Wangfu, his Chinese-Singaporean restaurant that’s been up for 11 years now. That small rice-in-a-box business now has more than 100 stores consisting of food carts and food stalls. “That business financed all of our other businesses, all our other restaurants,” said Ong proudly. A foodie, Ong was exposed to street food when he was a wushu athlete who represented the country in many competitions abroad. He reveled in the street foods of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand. “I would go around to different places and tuwing may break kami, we would explore the street food market ng different countries. I fell in love with different kind of food, Asian food,” he said. Wangfu came about because, after shoots, “kapag late night, wala kaming makakainan. Nasa food business naman ako, so nagtayo kami ng restaurant sa Tomas Morato. Iyon ang first branch (of Wangfu),” he said. He was joined in the venture by business partner Ace Wang. Wangfu serves Singaporean cuisine like laksa, Hainanese chicken and salted egg fried chicken. From Sir Chief to Sir Chef Actor Richard Yap is also one of Ong’s partners in Wangfu. Yap disclosed that when he was young, he “used to cook at home because my mom cooks very well.” It was his love for food that drove him to study culinary arts. But he discovered along the way that cooking was not for him. “When I took up a culinary course, I found out na hindi pala para sa akin ang pagluluto (that cooking is not for me). Ang hirap ng preparations. It takes a long time. Kung ako ang magluluto (If I will do the cooking), it will take three to four hours if you do it by yourself,” he said. In college, Yap took up a pre-Med course, Medical Technology, for two years, and then stopped because his father asked him to take up Business Management instead. When he applied for Med studies at UST, he was told that he had to go back to first year again. “I said never mind. I’ll just finish my Business Management course at La Salle,” he recalled. Getting into showbiz 12 years ago was something that Yap didn’t see coming. “When I started out with “My Binondo Girl”, after that nagdadalawang isip ako (I had second thoughts). So, I had to ask around. One of my directors, direk Jeffrey Jeturian, said, ‘You know, you have to make a choice kasi it’s either you go full-time sa showbiz or not.’” Yap’s apprehensions were not without basis, since not a lot of people would make it at his age then, around 40. “Ako, sabi ko, late na ako (I’m late), wala pa akong experience. It would take me a lot of time to catch up with veteran actors and actresses,” he said. Fortunately, those around him told him he had a future in showbiz for as long as he persevered. And that he did — and now he’s Richard Yap, a popular actor and household name, forever remembered by many as Sir Chief of the blockbuster TV series Be Careful With My Heart. Davao City transport modernization
It’s fast becoming a reality — the Davao City Transport Modernization Project. A pet project of then Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, it was part of the many plans she envisioned for the southern metropolis when she was elected to office in 2010. She started with studies and the gathering of data and the evaluation of the project’s impact on the transport sector, safety, and the local economy. There were apprehensions and protests from the “multi-cab” operators and drivers but these did not elicit public sympathy given the fact that their public utility vehicles were the last things one would consider safe and comfortable modes of transportation. Multi-cabs are mostly smuggled in through the Davao City Customs port. These are mini-utility trucks salvaged from the car “cemeteries” in Japan. They come in chop-chopped, loaded in cargo container vans, and pass through Customs with the apparent connivance of the head office. Upon landing, the cut-up vehicles are welded back together and converted to left-hand drive by outfits that are licensed by the Department of Trade and Industry. Surprisingly, the Land Transportation Office registers these vehicles fashioned into public utility jeeps. Everyone is on the ballgame. Davao City has a few Sarao-made PUJs. Because multi-cabs are a lot cheaper, these veritable rolling coffins dominate Davao City roads. Last week, during the visit of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to Davao City to formally open the first segment of the city’s grand coastal boulevard, he and VP Sara witnessed the signing of a $1-billion loan agreement between the Philippine government and the Asian Development Bank represented by Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno and ADB Country Director Pavit Ramachandran, respectively. The dollar-denominated loan will finance the DTMP which will be the largest and the Philippines’ first road-based public transport project in the country. The amount will cover, among other things, the cost of 1,100 modern electric buses which under the DTMP concept will be operated by the private sector under performance-based contracts. Diokno was quoted as saying that “the DTMP will be a model for other cities’ public transit projects.” Take a bow, VP Sara. This was the second pioneering project she launched during her term as mayor of Davao. The first was the relocation of aerial power and communications cables underground which is a work in progress. The main streets of the city have been cleared of unsightly tangles of cables and in the process, the roads and pedestrian walkways are being improved to make them safe for senior citizens to walk on. As many as there are modern buses, there will be drivers to be hired permanently and they will come from the ranks of the displaced multi-cab drivers. They will be trained before they are allowed to drive the modern buses. Others will be employed in other jobs related to the DTMP. The transport project was in its gestation period after it was given the green light by the Department of Transportation during the past Duterte administration but the Covid pandemic caught up with it and it was placed in the freezer. Now PBBM has seen to it that the project will be accomplished with a set timeline by 2024. That will be three claps for President Bongbong, but seen beaming beside him was the proud VP Inday Sara, the brains behind the DTMP. A road network of about 700 kilometers linking 29 routes within Davao City and the adjoining Panabo City in Davao del Norte will worm through commercial districts and residential communities. There will be 1,000 bus stops along the route. It is expected that traffic in the downtown areas will be decongested with the fielding of the brand new, comfortable, and safe buses which can take in more passengers than the present rickety multi-cabs. A plus factor of the DTMP project is the radical elimination of carbon emissions and the smuggling of multi-cab carcasses from Japan through the Davao Customs port in container vans given the “code green” by the BoC head office. 1,350 riders apprehended on 1st day of motorcycle pillion riding policy — Eleazar
Police have apprehended a total of 1,350 motorcycle riders during the first day of the strict implementation of rules on motorcycle pillion riding on Saturday, the Joint Task Force COVID Shield disclosed on Sunday. (JANSEN ROMERO / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) Based on the data of the JTF COVIDShield, a total of 704 motorcycle riders were apprehended for failure to install barriers while back-riding their spouses or live-in partners—a total of 697 of them were cited for various traffic violations while seven were arrested and taken to police stations.Police Lt. Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, commander of the JTF COVID Shield, explained that several violators were taken to the police stations because of being disrespectful to the apprehending authorities, or, due to local ordinances that require violators to be taken to the police stations to arrange for a community service as a penalty.Back-riding married couples and living-in partners without the required barrier, not wearing face masks and not wearing helmets fall under Reckless Driving with penalties ranging from P1,000 to P10,000 depending on the number of the same offense committed; Also, a total of 580 more motorcycle riders were also accosted for failure to comply with the installation of barriers while having a back-rider other than their spouses or live-in partners. Of the figure, 551 were cited for violations while 29 were taken to the police station. For those who are not authorized to back-ride (those who are not married or living-in partners), Eleazar said the violation would be Overloading of Passengers with a penalty of P1,000.Meanwhile, a total of 66 motorcycles were also cited for violation even with the installed barriers since police found out that they were back-riding people other than their spouses or live-in partners. The penalty also falls under Overloading of Passengers.Eleazar said most of the violators were flagged down by the PNP Highway Patrol Group headed by Brig. Gen. Eliseo Cruz with 284. The Police Regional Office 7 also has the most number of apprehensions with 187, followed by Police Regional Office 5 with 158, Police Regional Office 9 with 129 and Police Regional Office 12 with 120.The 1,350 apprehended motorcycle riders on Saturday alone is on top of the more than 30,000 violators accosted during the July 10 to July 31 grace period given for motorcycle riders to comply with the installed barriers. The deadline for compliance was on July 31 and all those caught within the three-week grace period were just warned.Eleazar then urged motorcycle riders to comply with the rules, saying their defiance would just be met with appropriate sanctions based on the guidelines.“When our motorcycle riders repeatedly pleaded for them to be allowed to back-ride at least their spouses or live-in partners, the National Task Force Against COVID-19 listened to their appeal. What the NTF Against COVID-19 was asking in return is for them to install barriers because it is part of the safety measures against coronavirus infection,” said Eleazar. “As per Secretary of the Interior and Local Government Eduardo Año, we are not requiring all motorcycles to install barriers. But if they are going to use their motorcycles for back-riding, then they should follow the rules. The deadline for them to comply was extended twice and they were given a total of 22 days to install the barriers, we believe that it is more than enough time to do what is asked from them,” he added.Eleazar stressed that the continuous defiance of some motorcycle riders in the coming days would only compromise the NTF Against COVID-19 plan to eventually allow more people other than married couples and living-in partners to back-ride......»»
