Doja Cat recreates personal paintings in ‘Paint The Town Red’ music video
GRAMMY award-winning global superstar Doja Cat has released her new single and music video “Paint The Town Red” via Kemosabe Records/RCA Records. The music video, directed by Nina McNeely and Doja Cat herself and shot in Los Angeles, is based on three paintings that the artist designed. Each one of the scenes in the video is a recreation of the paintings. Last month, Doja Cat painted the artworks on her Instagram Live as she chatted with fans and previewed her new song. This is the first official single from Doja Cat since she announced her first North American headline tour, The Scarlet Tour, beginning this fall with special guests Ice Spice and Doechii. Before this, she dropped her track and video “Attention” to critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone calling it “scorching.” Doja Cat was also featured on the cover of V Magazine last month for “The Global Music issue.” Earlier this year, she was featured alongside label mate SZA on the remix of her #1 Hot 100 song “Kill Bill”. She was also named one of Time100’s Most Influential People of 2023, gracing the cover of one of four global Time Magazine April issues and performing at the exclusive Time100 Gala. With over 20 billion worldwide streams to date, Doja’s creativity and showmanship as a performer have been praised time and again. Her Grammy-winning album Planet Her came out in June 2021 and dominated the charts, debuting at #1 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and generating the highest first day Spotify streams for an album by a female rapper. TONY BENNETT : GRIT AND GRACE
Tributes have continued to pour in for Tony Bennett, the last of the great mid-20th-century American crooners who died on 21 July at 96, after outliving his fellow giants in popular music such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and gaining a whole new generation of fans in the era of social media with his number-one duets album with Lady Gaga. That 2014 late-career triumph had made Bennett, at 88, the oldest living American performer to notch a number-one album on the charts. It was more proof at the time of the extraordinary odds-defying grit that undergirded the grace and elegance of Bennett’s persona as the living embodiment of classic American standards, a sound that in the post-rock era many had banished to the dismissive-sounding “adult contemporary” category. Sinatra himself crowned Bennett as “the best singer in the business” in a 1965 interview with Life magazine. “He excites me when I watch him. He moves me. He’s the singer who gets across what the composer has in mind, and probably a little more,” said the Chairman of the Board. Fifty-eight years later, Elton John, decades and a whole music era removed from Sinatra, was moved to say at Bennett’s passing: “Without doubt the classiest singer, man, and performer you will ever see. He’s irreplaceable.” Indeed, Bennett was sui generis, from his singular sound to his defiant artistry. “Neither a fluid singer nor an especially powerful one, he did not have the mellifluous timbre of [Bing] Crosby or the rakish swing of Sinatra,” wrote the New York Times in its obituary. “If Louis Armstrong’s tone was distinctively gravelly, Mr. Bennett’s wasn’t quite; ‘sandy’ was more like it.” You can hear that sandy rasp even in his early, ebullient years, in signature hits like “Rags to Riches,” “Cold Cold Heart” (originally a country ditty by Hank Williams, remade by Bennett and sublimely covered 51 years later by Norah Jones), and of course, his timeless “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” Touch of roughness The touch of roughness was what gave Bennett’s sound a rich, warm quality sort of like the hiss and pop of a vinyl record, conveying a more grounded, open-hearted, truthful sense to everything that he sang. In later years, as his lung power diminished with age, he cannily pruned his singing to a more direct, compact style, the belts now occasional but always at surprising moments, the lovely loping line maintained along with the heartfelt near-whispers. He kept to that sound and refused to change his style in the face of the sea change in popular music that would engulf his generation of swinging, jazzy entertainers. “Mr. Bennett stubbornly resisted record producers who urged gimmick songs on him, or, in the 1960s and early ’70s, who were sure that rock ’n’ roll had relegated the music he preferred to a dusty bin perused only by a dwindling population of the elderly and nostalgic,“ wrote Bruce Weber in the New York Times. Eight decades Time an unprecedented eight decades in the business some 20 Grammy awards, and the reverence of his peers and the public ultimately proved Bennett right: that his music still had a place in the modern world, that he could stick to what he did best — sing like nobody else the Great American Songbook, that canon of masterworks by the likes of Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen — and people of whatever stripe and age, undeterred by his gentleman’s suit and courtly manners from a bygone age, would sit and listen. Because great songs are great songs no matter the era, and as he once put it, “I wanted to sing the great songs, songs that I felt really mattered to people.” Asked if he ever got bored of his repertoire, Bennett said: “No. Do you get tired of making love?” “I was taught never to compromise; to never sing a cheap song,” he explained. “I never look down at the audience and think that they are ignorant, or think that I’m more intelligent than they are.” Bennett said these words in 2012, when, at 86, he had just released a new album, was doing grueling concert tours, and was also dabbling in painting in his free time. His historic 11 o’clock peak was two years away — the Cheek to Cheek album with Lady Gaga that made him an octogenarian with a number-one album on the Billboard 200 chart. (Attesting to his longevity and range, before Gaga he had collaborations as well with other epoch-defining female performers such as Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand.) “Here I am today, at 86, and I’m even more passionate now than ever before. I feel that I’m at the top of my game, and things just keep getting better and better,” he said with characteristic cheer in his 2012 book Life Is a Gift: The Zen of Bennett. In announcing Bennett’s passing on Friday, the Twitter account under his name revealed: “Tony left us today but he was still singing the other day at his piano and his last song was ‘Because of You‘, his first #1 hit.” What grit. What grace. The post TONY BENNETT : GRIT AND GRACE appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Unstoppable Taylor Swift becomes first woman with 4 albums on U.S. Top 10 at once
Taylor Swift has become the first woman and only the third artist ever to have four albums in the Top 10 of the US Album chart at once. Swift’s latest album, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), debuted impressively at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, selling an outstanding 716,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. This achievement not only makes it the highest-selling album of the year thus far, surpassing all other releases in 2023 but also marks the best-selling week for any album since her previous release, Midnights, in October 2022. In a rare feat, the Grammy-winning artist has made history with a series of chart-topping albums. With Lover at number seven, Folklore at number ten, Midnights at number five, and now Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) at number one, she has achieved an unparalleled feat that establishes her as a powerhouse in the music industry. This remarkable achievement makes Swift the first woman in history to have four albums in the Top 10 since the charts’ inception in 1963. It also makes her the first living act in nearly six decades to accomplish this feat, a record previously held by Herb Alpert with his albums Going Places, Whipped Cream & Other Delights, South of the Border, and The Lonely Bull. After Alpert’s passing in 2016, Prince left an indelible mark with five albums in the top 10: The Very Best of Prince, Purple Rain, The Hits/The B-Sides, Ultimate, and 1999. Alongside this exceptional achievement, the singer-songwriter has also earned her 12th number-one album with Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). She now holds the distinction of having the most number-one albums by a female performer, surpassing the previous record set by Barbra Streisand, who has 11 chart-topping albums to her name. Swift’s albums dominate the list of the top five biggest debuts in the past five years, claiming four out of the five spots. Adele’s highly anticipated 2021 album 30 lands in the fourth position, narrowly ahead of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). With its release, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) has not only achieved the distinction of being the biggest debut among the three re-recordings Swift has released thus far, but also marks another milestone in her campaign to re-record all of her albums originally produced under her former label, Big Machine. She now holds the distinction of having the most number-one albums by a female performer, surpassing the previous record set by Barbra Streisand, who has 11 chart-topping albums to her name. Following its release in late 2021, Red (Taylor’s Version) took second place with a debut of 605,000 units. Meanwhile, the initial release in the series, Fearless (Taylor’s Version), had a more modest debut with 291,000 units in early 2021, partly due to the unavailability of the highly sought -after the vinyl version at the time of its general release. Nonetheless, like the rest, it secured the top spot on the charts effortlessly. On 7 July, the American singer-songwriter released the remake version of her third studio album titled Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), which includes popular hits such as “Mine,” “Dear John,” “Back to December” and “Ours.” This release consists of 22 songs, including six tracks “From the Vault,” adding to the excitement surrounding the new album. Taylor Swift sets women’s record for most number one albums
Taylor Swift now has more number one albums than any other female artist in history following the recent release of "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)," Billboard said Monday. The record debuted at the top of the Billboard charts, becoming the pop queen's 12th number one album and surpassing Barbra Streisand for the most among women. For male performers, Jay-Z and the Beatles both have over a dozen number one albums, though Billboard notes it has changed its album ranking system over the decades to include anthologies. Swift, 33, has also become the first living artist in nearly 60 years to have four albums in the top 10 at the same time, the organization added. They include "Midnights," "Lover" and "Folklore." Billboard said Swift had also become the first living artist to have 11 albums in the top 200 simultaneously. Swift's record-breaking feats come as she performs many of her best hits on the fan-frenzied "Eras" tour. The 106-date stadium concert series kicked off in March and is within striking distance of becoming the first billion-dollar tour. "Speak Now" was originally released in 2010. Swift has vowed to re-record her first six albums so she can control their rights -- a process she was contractually allowed to begin in November 2020. She has also re-recorded "Fearless" and "Red." Last October, Swift became the first artist ever to simultaneously nab all 10 spots on the top US song chart after the release of her tenth studio album "Midnights." The album would mark the group’s first full-length album in six years following the release of the critically acclaimed and chart-topping Perfect Velvet in November 2016. Their ‘golden hour’: SB19, JVKE live collab finally happens
P-pop global sensation SB19 finally got to share the stage live with JVKE, at the American singer-songwriter’s What Tour Feels Like finale show at the House of Blues Boston on 2 September. “What an honor sharing the stage with JVKE for his epic ‘What Tour Feels Like’ finale at House of Blues Boston! Thank you all for making it an unforgettable night!,” the quintet wrote on X (formerly Twitter). SB19 members Pablo, Josh, Ken, Stell and Justin released their collab track with JVKE titled “Golden Hour (SB19 remix)” in July. Their own spin on the singer’s hit song featured a Filipino verse after the chorus of the song. “SB19 are crazy talented. As an artist, when I open my art to others so they can add their own interpretation, I never know how I’m going to feel about what they contribute. With SB19, I was just blown away. I hope this isn’t the last time we work together,” JVKE said in a statement following the release of the remix. “Golden Hour,” also released in July, debuted in the Top 10 Billboard Hot chart and landed at the top spot on the Global Spotify viral chart. It has an orchestral version by Max Martin as well as remixes by artists Ruel, milee and Fujii Kaze. SB19 recently kicked off its Pagtatag! world tour with shows at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on 24 to 25 June, followed by shows in Chicago, Texas, California, New York, Washington, Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Edmonton. In Los Angeles, the group shut down Hollywood Boulevard to film a busking performance of their songs “Bazinga,” “Crimzone” and “Gento”, then gathered another large crowd for a similar act at the New York Times Square on 1 September. ‘Margaritaville’ singer Jimmy Buffett dies at 76
American singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, best known for his 1977 hit "Margaritaville," has died at age 76, according to a statement on his website. "Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs," the statement said. "He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many." The statement did not include a cause of death. Buffett's classic chill-out anthem "Margaritaville," about beachfront living with a drink in hand, spent 22 weeks on the Billboard chart, and helped launch his decades-long music career and a business empire. Known as the "Mayor of Margaritaville," he released nearly 30 studio albums of country, folk and tropical tunes, and also launched a line of resorts, restaurants and retail stores that capitalized on his laid-back, escapist image. Born December 25, 1946, in the US state of Mississippi and raised in Alabama, Buffett began playing guitar in college and later started performing on the streets and in the clubs of New Orleans, according to his website. He released his first record "Down to Earth" in 1970, and a year later traveled to Key West, Florida, a place that became synonymous with Buffett's paradise-themed music and lifestyle brands. Buffett also penned bestselling books, appeared in movies and on television, and had a brief Broadway run with his musical "Escape to Margaritaville." But his signature song -- and its refrain: "Wastin' away again in Margaritaville, searchin' for my lost shaker of salt" -- is what his legions of fans and beach holidaymakers remember most. "There are people out there looking for a good time for a few days a year," Buffett told Rolling Stone magazine in 1996, referring to his fans, known as "Parrotheads." "We come to town and we're the carnival or the Mardi Gras. People blow off steam and then go back and become basically law-abiding citizens," he said. "But to see them on those two days, you'd go, 'My God, this is the most drunk and boisterous maniac crowd you ever saw!'" "Rest in power @jimmybuffett," rapper LL Cool J wrote Saturday on social media platform X. "I'm glad we had time to vibe. You were and always will be a Truly inspiring human." Former US senator from Alabama Doug Jones said he was sad to hear of Buffet's death. "Following the election in 2017 he serenaded us in Key West with 'Stars Fell on Alabama,'" Jones posted on social media platform X, referring to Buffet's 1981 song. "He lived life to the fullest and the world will miss him." Buffett was preparing to release a new record this year, according to his website. sco/leg © Agence France-Presse The post ‘Margaritaville’ singer Jimmy Buffett dies at 76 appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
