Razon’s Bloomberry bares H1 profit surge
After returning to profitability last year, Bloomberry Resorts Corp., the operator of Solaire Resort & Casino, still sustained its momentum even throughout the first half of the year. In a report on Wednesday, the publicly listed holdings firm reported a P6.4 billion consolidated net income during the period, a 160 percent surge from last year’s P2.5 billion. San the impact of a P356.6 million one time gain on sale from the disposition of an asset, the company noted that consolidated net income would have increased by 145 percent. “All our business segments continued to deliver growth that pushed consolidated net revenues, EBITDA, and net profit in the first half to levels exceeding that of the same period in 2019,” Enrique K. Razon Jr., Bloomberry Chairman and CEO said in the report. Solaire gaming revenue surges “We anticipate that the growth momentum we have so far seen will continue well into the next six months and in the years ahead,” he added. In terms of consolidated net revenues, Bloomberry posted P25.6 billion, which represented a 48 percent growth against P17.2 billion in the same period last year. At Solaire, total gross gaming revenue soared 41 percent to P31.2 billion annually — driven by the recovery in domestic mass table games and electronic gaming machines segments. Compared to the pre-pandemic figures in 2019, Solaire’s first-half GGR represented a 110 percent jump. The casino’s non-gaming revenues from its hotel, food, and retail segments reached P4 billion, up 51 percent. As of the end of June, Bloomberry logged a consolidated cash and cash equivalents balance of P44.9 billion. Total outstanding long-term debt was P98.1 billion, which represented the balance of the current and non-current portions of the amended P73.5 billion and P40.0 billion Syndicated Loan facilities. Meanwhile, the total equity attributable to equity holders of the parent company was P39.9 billion. The company has already drawn P18.2 billion from the P40 billion Syndicated Loan Facility, higher by P8.7 billion as the company drew from the facility in the second quarter to partially finance the construction of Solaire Resort North scheduled to launch by the first quarter of 2024. GERI profits nearly P1B in H1 amid real estate boom
Buoyed by the robust performance of its real estate, rental, and hotel businesses, Global-Estate Resorts, Inc. or GERI, a subsidiary of Megaworld Corp., delivered a 17 percent growth in its first-half profits. In a stock exchange report on Tuesday, GERI disclosed that its net income during the first six months of the year reached P996 million—a significant improvement from last year’s P848 million. Likewise, net income attributable to owners during the period also increased by 13 percent to PP848-million from last year’s P748-million. Consolidated revenues, on the other hand, surged by 32 percent to P3.9 billion from P3 billion in the same period last year. According to GERI, its real estate arm, which accounted for 79 percent of its total revenues, led the entire company’s growth. From January to June, real estate sales climbed by 32 percent to P3.1 billion from last year’s P2.3 billion. Reservation sales also soared by 39 percent to P11.7 billion during the first half of the year. “Our focus on our tourism townships allowed our company to achieve remarkable growth through the first half of the year,” GERI president Monica T. Salomon said in the report. “The company’s core businesses, especially those in our destination estates, largely benefited from the increasing tourism in our country. This second half, we are determined to leverage our expertise and hope to continue capturing the increasing tourism opportunities in the sector.” Demand for GERI’s residential and commercial properties remained strong, particularly for its projects in Boracay Newcoast, Eastland Heights in Antipolo, Rizal, and Twin Lakes in Laurel, Batangas. Its newest project, the P817-million Ocean Garden Villas Cluster C in Boracay Newcoast, which was only launched earlier this year, is now 94 percent sold as of end-June. Hotel revenues, on the other hand, doubled to P308 million from last year’s P158 million due to higher occupancy and room rates as local tourism and travel recover. Leasing revenues, likewise, rose by 29 percent to P273 million from last year’s P211- million. The contribution of retail spaces to the company’s leasing income grew from the year-ago level as foot traffic and tenant sales already recovered from the slowdown. To date, GERI operates nine tourism estates and integrated lifestyle communities across the country covering more than 3,300 hectares of land. Must-do’s before buying a condo
Many urban-dwelling young professionals, commonly referred to as “yuppies,” often ponder their readiness for property ownership. This is particularly common among those who prioritize home ownership and prefer living close to their workplaces, leading to a noticeable surge in online searches for condominiums. However, moving into a new home is a significant milestone in adulthood that calls for thorough mental, financial and emotional preparedness. [caption id="attachment_163897" align="aligncenter" width="5333"] UNIT Studio at Sierra Valley Gardens.[/caption] Karen Cesario, chief integration officer of Robinsons Land Corporation Residences, said that the process of finding one’s first home can be “daunting,” emphasizing the importance of minimizing the “risk of regrets.” Aspiring homeowners should keep these things in mind as they work toward their goal: 1. Set a moving-out date. The process of moving out can be challenging and time-consuming. Thus, it is essential to set a date for the move while considering tasks like cleaning, packing and obtaining necessary permits. Buyers eyeing the newly launched fourth building of Sierra Valley Gardens in Cainta, Rizal, have until the targeted turnover date in 2028 to plan their move. This allows them to develop skills like cooking, laundry and budgeting before the transition. 2. Emotionally prepare your family. Transitioning away from the family home requires emotionally preparing one’s family, considering the tight-knit bonds you have made through the years. It is essential to allocate enough time for open discussions and explanations about the decision, providing reassurance to the family that the individual will continue to visit and invite them to the new home. 3. Build a budget. Budgeting is essential for successful independent living, ensuring that homeowners do not exceed their income and can manage daily and monthly expenses effectively. Sierra Valley Gardens offers flexible payment schemes, including monthly amortizations, to provide ease for millennials. Moreover, RLC Residences is offering a five percent launch discount for the new fourth building, enabling future homeowners to purchase their dream home. 4. Develop eating habits. Living with family often provides the convenience of prepared food. However, when moving out, individuals must learn to plan meals, explore recipes and shop for groceries and essentials. Sierra Valley Gardens, situated within a “destination estate”, offers convenient access to an upcoming mall and various retail stores and restaurants. Its direct access to Ortigas Ave. Extension also ensures easy movement outside the estate when needed. 5. Keep an administration and maintenance directory. Keep a directory of emergency service providers like hospitals and police stations. Moreover, condominium residents should keep a directory of administration and maintenance offices. Taking the big leap Moving out is one big leap that one must take. It signifies a transition into independence, adulthood and the pursuit of personal growth. However, this journey is not without its challenges. “This is why we have been extremely thoughtful in designing Sierra Valley Gardens such that it caters to modern needs and aspirations — from installing upgraded smart home facilities, a work from home nook in our units, to providing abundant green spaces and a multitude of amenities for young professionals to enjoy,” Cesario said. Sierra Valley Gardens, an 18-hectare mixed-use development by the RLC Residences, offers a spacious residential area that cultivates a “thriving and independent community.” It caters to young professionals, start-up families and investors seeking a place to establish their lives and form lasting relationships. With a wide range of amenities and a dedicated residential district, Sierra Valley Gardens provides the perfect setting for personal growth and new adventures. ‘Pambansang Pabahay’ projects break ground in CamNorte
The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development announced Monday that two more housing projects under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino (4PH) Program have broken ground, targeting 4,000 families from Camarines Norte as beneficiaries. DHSUD Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar and Camarines Norte Governor Ricarte Padilla led the groundbreaking ceremony in the towns of Vinzons and Mercedes. "This is another solid testament of the continuing nationwide rollout of the President’s Pambansang Pabahay," Acuzar said. "This signals the start of our close collaboration to help CamNortenos realize their dream of owning decent yet affordable shelters," he added. The housing czar highlighted the significant role of the local government units in the implementation of the 4PH – from project conceptualization, processing, and identification of beneficiaries up to the sustainability of the projects. For his part, Governor Padilla expressed gratitude to the President and the national government, particularly DHSUD, for looking after the welfare of CamNortenos. Assistant Secretary Daryll Bryan Villanueva said the two projects, facilitated by DHSUD Regional Office 5 headed by Director Richard Manila, target more than 4,000 families, including informal settler families, as beneficiaries. Located near Bagasbas Beach, the Mercedes housing project is enrolled with the Social Housing Finance Corporation, one of DHSUD’s key shelter agencies. It intends to construct 34 four-story buildings to accommodate more than 3,200 families. Meanwhile, the project in Vinzons is a township development composed of 18 four-story medium-rise buildings, targeting more than 800 beneficiaries. Around 30 LGUs have already broken ground for their respective housing projects under 4PH since the flagship program's launch in September last year. Puerto Princesa coastal dwellers relocation set
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — The local government here launched the “Save the Puerto Princesa Bays” project last Saturday which sets in motion a long-term objective of relocating around 5,500 families residing along the coast. According to Mayor Lucilo Bayron, the Barangay Mandaragat coastal-dwelling families bear significant responsibility for the degradation of the aquatic ecosystem in the area, and the situation was worsened by the untreated wastewater from 17 outfalls that directly discharge into the sea. Approximately 25,000 residents in Puerto Princesa Bay — accounting for average family sizes — contribute to daily pollution through improper waste disposal, including waste and urine excretion. Their activities, such as raising pigs, chickens, and dogs, also adversely affect the environment. “It’s critical to understand because human waste from these activities contains dangerous compounds that pollute the water. This pollution depletes oxygen levels and destroys the delicate ecological balance required for marine life to thrive in the bay,” Bayron said. In his address to the residents and barangay officials of Mandaragat during the early hours of the program’s launch on 15 July, Bayron stressed the importance of coastal dwellers refraining from polluting the Puerto Princesa Bay, the primary focus of the major conservation initiative, while they await their relocation. “The city government has already acquired two land properties in Irawan and San Jose barangays for their eventual move. These sizable land plots will be utilized for the construction of affordable and comfortable housing units,” Bayron said. He added that the program is in collaboration with the Pambansang Pabahay Program under the leadership of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. from the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development. The expansive Irawan property, covering 21 hectares, will feature residential or apartment buildings capable of accommodating 7,680 families. Additionally, the two-hectare San Jose property will also provide housing for 2,496 families currently residing in informal settlements. “We need two solutions — we need to relocate coastal dwelling families in the bay area and we need to properly address the flow of wastewater towards our ocean,” said Bayron, acknowledging that this will be a lengthy journey that cannot be accomplished within a span of two to three years. “What I see as a way to save that, the long-term solution is to relocate the coastal dwellers. Why? Because they are living in a danger zone. It’s not just a danger zone—it is an area that cannot truly belong to them because it is a salvage zone,” he added. Innovative architecture in Panglao Shores
Sustainability and innovation in architecture are intertwined and increasingly integral to responsible design, proving that they are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary aspects. Panglao Shores in Bohol, designed by XCO2, showcases the integration of sustainability and innovation in architecture. The project takes a proactive stance by prioritizing the reduction of energy, water and waste demands as core elements of its development approach. Despite pandemic-related challenges and supply chain disruptions, the design team for Panglao Shores showed exceptional resilience compared to other regional developers. Their self-sufficiency-oriented approach, utilizing local materials, aimed to achieve the highest standards of sustainable design. Through innovative yet straightforward design techniques, they effectively reduced energy demand, minimizing the reliance on advanced technology and lowering carbon dioxide emissions. “The design team had to look for innovative ways to do so without compromising guest comfort and experience,” XCO2 executive John Farrell told the Daily Tribune, adding that they were able to predict the energy-saving benefits of a variety of design techniques at once by using dynamic simulation tools. “Looking at ways to provide shading and reduce the ingress of unwanted solar heat into guestrooms and occupied spaces lead to a significant reduction in the cooling demand and therefore a reduction in the size of plant for cooling while also saving money on running costs,” Farrell added. XCO2 also emphasized the value of investing time in early-stage design to implement optimum strategies, eliminating unnecessary engineering. “By combining sustainable practices with innovative design thinking, architects can create buildings and spaces that are environmentally responsible, resource-efficient, aesthetically pleasing and supportive of the well-being of occupants and the surrounding community,” Farrell said. “We are likely to see a rise in the priority of designing buildings to promote better health and well-being for its users.” Panglao Shores, a masterplan development located on the picturesque Panglao Island in Bohol, offers stunning views of the Mindanao Sea and encompasses a wide range of amenities, such as retail and commercial areas, residential villages, hotels, international resorts and a beach club. This expansion project aims to enhance the existing South Palms Resort and bolster the tourism infrastructure of the Central Visayas region, recognizing the island’s significance as the 10th largest in the Philippines. Covering more than 57 hectares, the development prioritizes sustainability and adheres to international environmental standards, ensuring a competitive advantage in the industry. Wagner chief says his rebel troops ‘turning back’
The rebel Wagner mercenary force threatened to march on Moscow on Saturday before announcing a stunning pull-back, as Kyiv seized on the chaos to launch new assaults against Russian positions in Ukraine. The Wagner private army captured a key military headquarters in southern Russia, and sent a force north to threaten the capital, defying Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin's warning of civil war. But amid Russia's most serious security crisis in decades, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin delivered a surprise announcement, saying his troops were turning back to avoid bloodshed in the Russian capital. "We are turning our columns around and going back to field camps," Prigozhin announced after previously vowing to march on Moscow to topple the military leadership. He said understood the importance of the moment and did not want to "spill Russian blood." Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said he had negotiated a truce with Prigozhin "on stopping the movement of armed individuals from the Wagner group on Russian territory and further steps on de-escalating tensions." Kyiv revelled in the chaos, as Putin's former mercenary ally Prigozhin turned his Wagner force away from the offensive against Ukraine and made threats to topple the chiefs of Russia's military. "The man from the Kremlin is obviously very scared and is probably hiding somewhere," Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his daily address, adding that Putin has "created this threat himself." Separately, Ukraine's deputy defence minister Ganna Malyar announced that Ukrainian forces had gained more ground in the eastern region of the Donbas, launching new counteroffensives in several areas. Putin's spokesman insisted the Russian leader was still at work in the Kremlin and had not fled Moscow. Russian blood Before Prigozhin's apparent climbdown, Russian regular forces had launched what one regional governor called a "counter-terrorist operation" to halt the Wagner advance northwards up a main highway towards Moscow. The governor of the Lipetsk region, whose capital is just 420 kilometers (260 miles) south of Moscow, said Wagner's private military force was "moving across" the territory and urged civilians not to leave their homes. In the capital, the mayor urged Muscovites to stay indoors and declared Monday a day off work. "The situation is difficult. I ask you to refrain from travelling around the city as much as possible," Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a statement, warning of possible road closures. Prigozhin said his troops had taken control of the military command centre and airbase in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, the nerve centre of Russia's offensive in Ukraine. "We got to Rostov. Without a single shot we captured the HQ building," he said, claiming that local civilians had welcomed the operation and vowing to overthrow Russia's military command. "Why does the country support us? Because we went on a march of justice," he said, claiming his men had not killed any soldiers despite having been hit with strikes from army "artillery and after that from helicopters". Responding to the challenge in a televised address, Putin accused Prigozhin -- whose private army provided shock troops for Moscow's offensive in Ukraine -- of a "stab in the back" that posed a threat to Russia's very survival. 'Harsh measures' "Any internal turmoil is a deadly threat to our statehood and to us as a nation. This is a blow to Russia and to our people," Putin said, demanding national unity. "Extravagant ambitions and personal interests led to treason," Putin said, referring to Prigozhin, who began building his power base as a catering contractor. "All those who consciously stood on the path of betrayal, who prepared an armed rebellion, stood on the path of blackmail and terrorist methods, will suffer inevitable punishment, before the law and before our people," Putin vowed. Another Putin ally, Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, declared that he had dispatched his own units to help quash the Wagner rebellion, warning: "The rebellion must be put down, and if harsh measures are necessary, we are ready!" Latvia announced that it was tightening security on its Russian border and would not admit refugees fleeing the chaos. 'Civil conflict' After Putin's speech accusing him of treason, Prigozhin launched a second broadside. "On treason of the motherland: the president is deeply wrong. We are patriots of our motherland," Prigozhin said. "Nobody plans to turn themselves in at the request of the president, the FSB or anyone else." Armed Wagner fighters deployed around administrative buildings in Rostov and tanks had been seen in the city centre. As the insurrection force headed north through Voronezh and Lipetsk towards Moscow, the capital's mayor announced that "anti-terrorist" measures were being taken. Critical facilities were "under reinforced protection", TASS reported, citing a law enforcement source. While Prigozhin's outfit fought at the forefront of Russia's offensive in Ukraine, in recent months it has engaged in a bitter feud with Moscow's military leadership. He has repeatedly blamed Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov, chief of the general staff, for his fighters' deaths. Protecting civic spaces to improve in-city mobility
Mobility and public space are among the most challenging discussions in many modern cities. The discussions focus on issues such as the element of public space and its impact on the sustainability of urban mobility. And how does in-city mobility contribute to the habitability of the public realm? The massive use of public and private transportation has resulted in the progressive reduction of public space quality, which is one of the critical components to give life to the city itself and define its safety, accessibility and characteristics of good quality. To achieve sustainable development of the urban environment, city planners should seriously introduce targeted interventions to ensure the integration between mobility and urban planning. “We recognize the importance of civic spaces and in-city mobility enhancing the quality of life for Cebuanos. Thus, FLI is committed to creating a thriving community at City di Mare in Cebu City. As part of our dedication to the city’s goals, we will be developing these new features to benefit the community,” said Don Ubaldo, first vice president for Filinvest Townships. Filinvest Land, Inc. is planning to expand the civic spaces and improve in-city mobility at City di Mare, a green and master-planned community in Cebu City, to support the city’s environmental and resilience goals. The planned civic spaces at City di Mare are envisioned to serve Cebu City’s residents, similar to parks, and may even serve as emergency evacuation areas if needed. An area will be devoted to multi-use sports fields (approximately two football fields), while another area will be devoted to leisure spaces including but not limited to bazaars, cultural spaces, food stalls, and interim pop-up attractions. These spaces will add to City di Mare’s Open Park, which currently features brand-new recreational amenities including play and exercise equipment, and the City di Mare Events Grounds, the venue of the 2023 Sinulog Festival. Civic or public spaces have been described as extensions of community and great contributors to community health, whether socially, economically, culturally or environmentally. “These spaces will not only provide residents with recreational areas but also contribute to the overall resilience and sustainability of the city. We look forward to working closely with the local government and community to bring these plans to fruition,” Ubaldo added. On the mobility side, City di Mare residents, locators and patrons will also benefit from additional sidewalks, wider existing roads, new access roads leading into the development and a pedestrian bridgeway connecting City di Mare to IL Corso, FLI’s Lifemall in Cebu. The boardwalk along IL Corso will also be enhanced to support the Cebu City government’s goal to improve the area’s coastal experience. Nature-based designs are a common feature in all FLI developments. FLI residential subdivisions and midrise buildings, for instance, are characterized by lush greenery and open spaces for healthier living. City di Mare, Cebu’s Lifestyle Capital, is a 58-hectare premier development that fosters a complete and modern live-work-play lifestyle. It covers a 40-hectare mixed-used sector (a joint venture project of the Cebu City government and FLI) and a 10-hectare commercial component. It is also home to Cebu City’s first-ever pump track for active bicyclists. In addition, the Filinvest Group acquired 8.1 hectares of land envisioned to be a mixed-use project featuring residential, commercial, office and retail components in South Road Properties, Cebu City. Rockwell sets sight on 3 provinces

Visayan growth
This piece is being written as I traverse the Visayan region which is carrying greater prospects for future economic growth. For the past months, I’ve written on Mindanao and Central Luzon and how these regions have experienced rapid development thanks to the nationally elected political leaders who hail from their provinces, Vice President Sara Duterte and the former president now Deputy Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, respectively. At times neglected in the discussions is the Visayas region. This time around, I was able to spend time in Iloilo and Cebu – both highly urbanized regional growth areas outside of Metro Manila. Iloilo is a wonderful city as it exists harmoniously with its bodies of water. Esplanades and walkways allow everyone to enjoy the river, which serves as a leisure area, transportation hub, and entry for goods, which is quite uncommon in the Philippines. Usually, Philippine rivers are either for people or for goods, not both, since our rivers are easily polluted. But in Iloilo, as well as neighboring Guimaras, their rivers bring life to the province. The only eyesore in Iloilo would be the “sinking” Ungka flyover located in Pavia. This project cost the government P680 million but it was closed shortly after it opened because motorists experienced a “wavy” sensation while driving on it. It was later learned that some of its pillars were sinking at the rate of two centimeters per day. A study showed it would take an estimated P250 million to repair the flyover and make it safely usable to the public. One reason to be excited about Iloilo should be the proposed revival of the Panay Railway, which was mentioned by President Bongbong Marcos Jr. in his SoNA last year and included in the Infrastructure Flagship Projects approved by NEDA. On this trip, I learned that Panay used to have a working railway that connected Iloilo City to Roxas City, and that plans for its revival would further connect Iloilo to Caticlan thus, the resort island of Boracay. Imagine having tourists land in Boracay, spend a few days there, then take a train to Iloilo where they would further be immersed in Philippine culture in one of the oldest cities of the country. Cebu is an established gem of a city, with traffic nearing Manila levels. Walking around Cebu feels like being in Alabang or BGC. One thing missing in Cebu is tollways to connect its cities and municipalities. This may change soon with the inclusion of the Metro Cebu Expressway in the NEDA-approved IFPs. The 72-kilometer project, once completed, will connect Naga City to Danao City, cutting travel time from three hours to 50 minutes. The project was started years ago, but only a reported five kilometers of it have been finished so far due to lack of funding. At this rate of budget allocation, it will take 20 years to finish it. Now, the project will continue and be finished sooner via a PPP arrangement after Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. — the same company that built the iconic Cebu Cordova Link Expressway bridge — has expressed interest in it. Whenever I visit Cebu, it seems that a major development had taken place. This time was no different. Even in Iloilo, there are new buildings erected almost monthly. One notable building is the 14-story Stronghold Insurance Building in Mandurriao, Iloilo City, an area surrounded by Ayala, SM, Vista Land, and Megaworld developments. As this Administration has heralded, this time the purpose is to “Build, Better, More” for the benefit of all Filipinos nationwide. For comments, email him at darren.dejesus@gmail.com. Globe data center readies PHL as regional technology hub
With the flood of data across the globe from the ever-growing demands of a thriving digital landscape, data has become the new gold. The more data you have, the more gold you will get, according to Ivan Uy, the Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology. At the launch of the ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (Philippines), a joint venture between Globe, Ayala Corporation, and Singapore-based ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, Uy underscored the significance of harnessing the potential of data centers to catapult the Philippines’ hypergrowth and position the country as regional hub for information technology and digital innovations. “The Philippines is in a good position to take the front seat in the digital space,” Uy said, “we have the talent, the skillset, and the right motivation. Digitalization is one of the primary thrusts of the Marcos administration.” He added, “Traditional areas like Singapore and Japan are getting crowded. So the Philippines is an open field where they can see almost unlimited growth not just because of the untouched potential of our land but even our human resources.” Carlo Malana, STT GDC Philippines president, added the Philippines benefited from the geopolitical tensions in Europe and parts of the Indo-Pacific being at the heart of the ASEAN region. “Singapore has no available land and there is tension in the Taiwan Straits. But the Philippines has real estate space and power requirements to host data centers,” Malana said. The new data center campus, STT Fairview, will comprise over 83,000 square meters of gross floor area across four buildings. Once fully built, it offers a development potential of 124 megawatts of IT load capacity. It is strategically positioned within Quezon City with access to nearby substations and critical telecommunications, transportation links, and logistics, business, and industrial hubs. This data center is expected to store and manage various digital data of customers of nearly all types of businesses now operating in the digital age. Connected Filipinos with faster internet and high-technology smartphones, people now consume as much as they share data — texts, photos, audio, and videos online. According to a 2021 report by social media management firms Hootsuite and We Are Social, Filipinos have been the heaviest internet users in Southeast Asia and the world, surfing the web for an average of 10 hours each day, longer than that of Colombia, Thailand, and Indonesia. “Data is the fuel that will drive everything we do, from social to e-commerce. Data centers are growing at a phenomenal pace in the region. Still, the Philippines will be the center of growth in Southeast Asia,” Bruno Lopez, president and CEO of ST Telemedia Global Data Centres-International, said. In addition, Uy said the Philippines has the labor force, land area, and regulations to build the country as an efficient data center location. Uy said the government had launched programs to upskill Filipinos in data management, tapping the youth’s higher interest and knowledge absorption in technology. “Other countries’ aging population cannot cope with the future demand.” Half of the Philippine population is aged 25, while that of Japan is 48. Level of expertise Manala added, “There’s a different level required for running a critical facility. For example, a mechanic fixing your car and the other a Formula One are different mechanics.” For data protection and cybersecurity regulations, Uy said authorities would strictly implement data privacy laws and anti-cybercrime measures. “The DICT will provide companies guidelines for compliance and training to build their capacities. We will put these as our priorities for reliable data interoperability.” With these critical elements for operating an efficient data center, Lopez believes there will be at least 28,000 jobs for Filipinos and $5 billion more in national income for every 20-megawatt data center. “Data now is the new gold, and the data center is your vault. The bigger the data center, the more gold you have,” Manala explained. In the next three years, Lopez said there could be ten other data center providers in the Philippines as the digitalization of activities is accelerated by hyper scalers, which are companies engaged in various businesses like e-commerce, entertainment, and research. “I’ve worked with Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Before, each of them wanted just five megawatts. With data centers and mobile applications growing phenomenally, 124 megawatts is a drop in the bucket.” Aside from a significant land area, hyper scalers are looking for high power capacity to run their data-centric computers 24/7. Uy said the demand for more data centers and the interest in electric vehicles or EVs would rise. “I’m also initiating programs to retool our mechanics to become EV mechanics because our automobile industry will have a profound transformation in the next ten years because computers will power these EVs.” Located along Regalado Avenue in West Fairview, Quezon City, the data center’s first phase is expected to rise in 2025, while the rest in eight years or less. “We’ll scale the growth of the rest of the facility as the demand comes in. As the customers come in, we’re prepared to give them a strategic highway for their development and growth in their countries,” Manala said. Wolfgang Steakhouse Grill opens city of dreams branch, expands menu
The name alone sounds expensive and intimidating, but the owners of Wolfgang Steakhouse Grill swear it’s because they serve only the finest food. Known for its signature USDA prime dry-aged steak, the chain has opened a fourth restaurant in the Philippines with more grilled items on offer — the better to encourage people who love first-rate food and a relaxed atmosphere The new Wolfgang Steakhouse Grill at the City of Dreams Manila in Parañaque City had a grand launch Tuesday night attended by the founder himself, Wolfgang Zwiener, accompanied by wife Elena and son Peter, now the president of the world-renowned Wolfgang’s Steakhouse. The event was also graced by its local managing partners led by Raymund Magdaluyo (Red Crab Group of Restaurants) and Leina Bolinas (Excello Restaurant Management Group). The resto’s other outlets are in Resorts World Manila in Pasay City, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City and The Podium in Mandaluyong City. This is also the 32nd location of Wolfgang Steakhouse worldwide. What makes this new location extra special is that this is the only Wolfgang Steakhouse with grilled offerings. New grilled dishes have been added to the menu for diners to order from brunch to late night, such as Grilled Barbecue Short Ribs, Dry-Aged Brisket Pastrami, Beef Tartar and Grilled Lemon Caper Chicken. “Wolfgang Steakhouse is a classic steakhouse that serves the finest beef,” said Peter in his brief speech. “Here at the Grill, we are able to introduce more dishes using the different parts of the cow and the various ways of preparing it. This gives us an opportunity to offer those who want to eat other interesting and flavorful dishes, such as Lomo Saltado (a Peruvian dish) and chicken dishes. But, the good thing is, we still offer the regular full menu of Wolfgang Steakhouse.” Peter reflected on how the restaurant has come a long way from its first outlet in Manila in 2016. “Thanks to our fabulous partners like Raymund Magdaluyo and Leina Bolinas and their team,” Peter said. “We were very fortunate. I still remember the day I met Raymund in Japan after he called me to say he had a fabulous dinner at Wolfgang on Christmas Eve. He told me a beautiful story about his family and how they had a great dinner there. He told me he wanted to have Wolfgang Steakhouse in the Philippines. And it came to fruition many years later.” “After the pandemic, we are coming out stronger and we want to grow more rapidly in the Philippines and offer our steaks to everyone,” he added. Elegant, contemporary Boasting an intimate and cozy atmosphere with dark wooden interiors and an old-world charm, the 350-square-meter steakhouse features an intimate whisky lounge and impressive wine cellar. Popular among its steaks are the short loin, porterhouse and rib-eye. “Grill means basically direct fire. We offer more grilled items,” said Magdaluyo, adding that, “for us, the actual concept of the grill is that this place is a bit casual. Upscale but casual. Meaning, you can come as you are. You can wear shorts or beach wear and that’s perfectly fine.” Magdaluyo also shared that another Wolfgang Steakhouse Grill, with a sports grill theme, is opening at the Araneta Coliseum by October. “It’s a 40-seater place to serve the Quezon City market,” he said.
