Balik-Tanaw | The dissident love of Jesus
The readings for Palm Sunday begin with narrating the triumphant entry of Jesus and His disciples to Jerusalem. According to the story, Passover and the Feast of the Unleavened Bread is coming in two days’ time and a lot of Jews will go up to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. As observant Jews, Jesus and his disciples came to Jerusalem in observance of the feast that will take place (John 12: 12-16; Mark 14:1-15). When they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives, Jesus instructed his two disciples to go to a village where they will find an ass and to bring it to him. Jesus rode on the ass when he entered Jerusalem. The people accompanied him and they held palm branches while crying out, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our Father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!’ (Mark 11:1-10). The post Balik-Tanaw | The dissident love of Jesus appeared first on Bulatlat......»»

No call means no challenge
In basketball, whether in FIBA, NBA or PBA, there has to be a call before a coach is able to make a challenge during a game. When Scottie Thompson drove in and was fouled by Mark Barroca with eight seconds left in the Ginebra-Magnolia PBA game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last Sunday, no call was whistled. The foul was evident but coach Tim Cone couldn’t register a challenge even if he had the option. At that point, Magnolia led, 92-91......»»
Sustainable national sports program sought
Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro called for a sustainable national sports program to help young Filipino athletes achieve their full potential as he kicked off the opening ceremony of the 2023 Palarong Pambansa. “We want a sustainable national sports program for the Filipino youth,” Teodoro said. “We want to provide them with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed in sports and in life.” The mayor said that heavy rains in the past few days did not dampen the spirits of the delegates to the Palaro. They even braved the downpour during the grand parade. “Despite the heavy rains in the past few days, like the tests in our country, we are still here full of hope, have strengths, for a prosperous and stable country,” Teodoro said. The Palarong Pambansa is the country’s largest youth sporting event. This year’s games are being held in Marikina City from 1 to 5 August. Along with Teodoro, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte also graced the opening at the Marikina Sports Center. The Palarong Pambansa 2023 is anchored by the theme: “Batang Malakas, Bansang Matatag.” The opening ceremony commenced with a parade of student-athletes, starting from the Marikina River Park to the Marikina Sports Center. During the parade, the delegates were accompanied by marching bands and Marikina students who performed the regional dances of each delegation. Giving additional spectacle to the festive event was the dragon boat exhibition at the Marikina River organized by the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragon boat Federation. After all delegates converged at the MSC, the program proper kicked off with the Oath of Sportsmanship led by volleyball star Alyssa Valdez followed by the Oath of Officiating Officials led by Jonathan Oscar Jimenez, boxing tournament director. Volleyball player Bea de Leon, and basketball player Mark Barroca led the lighting of the Palaro Friendship Cauldron, together with the team captains representing the 17 participating regions in this year’s national games. Some Metro Manila mayors, provincial mayors, governors, members of House Representatives, and other national government officials graced the opening to show their full support to the student-athletes and to the City of Marikina. Casio plays hero as Alaska breaks bubble curse
Jvee Casio was excellent in crucial moments. (PBA Images) Alaska bounced back from two losses to open the bubble campaign by grinding out an 87-81 victory over Magnolia Saturday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center. Jvee Casio produced some of the keys in the final minutes as the Aces defeated one of the PBA’s top contenders to barge into the win column after falling short against the TNT Tropang Giga and Meralco Bolts. Casio finished with 17 points, including a three-pointer that put Alaska ahead 79-75 with 2:40 remaining in the fourth. He also blocked a rainbow attempt by Jackson Corpuz while the Aces were protecting an 85-81 lead. Jeron Teng scored eight of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Aces take the lead for good while Mike DiGregorio and Abu Tratter added 10 points apiece. The Aces won in the first game since announcing that forward Kevin Racal will miss the rest of the conference due to an ACL injury he suffered in their 100-95 loss to the Tropang Giga last Oct. 11. That game certainly was still in the mind of coach Jeffrey Cariaso, who told his team to carry a mentality as if the Aces had a 1-1 record. “When you approach that game than being 0-2, I think their mindset’s different,” he said. “We came to this game facing a well-coached and very tough Magnolia team. They have superstars that we really have to worry about and to be able to step up and be better defensively is my biggest take on this game.” Alaska bucked a 39-28 second quarter deficit to inch its way back into the game, cooling Magnolia’s offense after making 63-percent of its shots in the first quarter. Mark Barroca was one of the few bright spots for the Hotshots with 16 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals. Rookie big man Aris Dionisio scored 10 points in 17 minutes. But Magnolia saw Paul Lee being held to a 4-of-16 shooting despite 14 points, thus falling to a 1-2 record this conference. The scores: ALASKA 87 — Teng 19, Casio 17, Tratter 10, DiGregorio 10, Manuel 9, Herndon 7, Galliguez 6, Ebona 5, Brondial 4, Ayaay 0, Marcelino 0, Publico 0. MAGNOLIA 81 — Barroca 16, Lee 14, Banchero 13, Jalalon 11, Dionisio 10, Sangalang 8, De la Rosa 7, Corpuz 2, Reavis 0, Melton 0, Abundo 0. Quarters: 21-29, 43-45, 62-64, 87-81......»»
PBA: Beermen, Gin Kings, and Hotshots test negative for COVID-19
The COVID-19 test results are out for all three PBA teams under San Miguel Corp. The flagship Beermen, Barangay Ginebra, and the Magnolia Hotshots all tested negative. SMC had all its players and team officials tested for COVID-19 last week, with the results officially coming out Monday. "Kinakabahan papunta ng hospital and kinakabahan [during COVID-19 test] kasi first time ko lang ma-test," Magnolia's Mark Barroca said. Aside from all three of its PBA teams, SMC big boss Ramon Ang likewise sponsored the COVID-19 tests of PBA employees. All 41 of the league's regular employees were tested at the San Miguel headquarters last week. The PBA has since opened office operations, albeit on a limited capacity, this week as Metro Manila has been downgraded to a general community quarantine. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
