Jaymee Joaquin, ‘Games Uplate Live’ host, dies at 44
Filipina actress and host Jaymee Joaquin has passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 44 years old. Colleague-turned-friend Corss Ebora-Valenton paid tribute to the former actress on 19 October. “She was powerful not because she wasn’t scared but because she went on so strongly despite the fear. You will be dearly missed, Jayms,” Valenton wrote. Valenton added that she was grateful for the opportunity to work and be reunited with Joaquin the previous year for Jaymee’s passion project titled Beautiful Scars, which chronicles Filipina breast cancer “thrivers.” “Itutuloy at tatapusin namin ang proyekto natin. Your legacy lives on with the @beautifulscarsdocu,” she added. Meanwhile, Joaquin’s cousin, Erika Geronimo, also shared the news of her death. “It is with a heavy heart that our family announces the passing of my cousin, Jaymee Topacio aka Jaymee Wins or Jaymee Joaquin. She lived an extraordinary life filled with adventure, laughter, and love. She inspired and touched a lot of lives through her advocacy and talent. She will be greatly missed and will always be in our loving memory as a strong woman,” Geronimo wrote. “A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered,” she concluded. Joaquin’s acting and hosting career in the Philippines blossomed when she was the game show jock for the late-night interactive show Games Uplate Live. She also appeared in numerous television shows and movies, such as Super Inggo 2: Ang Bagong Bangis (2007), Shake, Rattle and Roll 9 (2007), My Big Love (2008) and Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat (2008). In 2016, the former Star Magic actress was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite her cancer recurring four times and forcing her to go through multiple surgeries, Joaquin maintained a healthy and positive mindset. She ventured into blogging, podcasting and writing two books, titled That Sh*t Called Cancer and No-Hair Mama, Don’t Care. Cebu Pink Paddlers make waves in US dragon boat scene
CEBU CITY, Philippines — The breast cancer survivors-turned dragon boat racers from the Cebu Pink Paddlers continue to make their presence felt in the United States after bagging a gold medal in the 2023 Nevada International Dragon Boat Festival in Henderson, Nevada, United States on Saturday, October 14, 2023. The Cebu Pink Paddlers ruled the 200-meter breast cancers survivor race category and earned the bronze medal in the 200m women’s championship division. It came less than a week after they also claimed a gold and a silver medal in the Santa Fe Dam Dragon Boat Festival 2023 in Irwindale, California. This time, the Cebu Pink Paddlers topped the 200m breast cancer survivor category with a time of one minute and 2.51 seconds to earn the first place. Warriors on Water came in second with a time of 1:02.63, followed by Dragon Divas of Minnesota at 1:02.85. The fourth and fifth placers were the Pink Phoenix (1:03.56) and the Pink Paddlers (1:06.98) in the 200m breast cancer survivor category. They were behind silver medalist Tilikum Dragons who clocked in 56.97 seconds, while Catch 22-Tsunami topped the race in 55.97 seconds for the gold medal. One of Cebu Pink Paddlers’ goals of competing in the United States is to inspire more women, especially breast cancer survivors, that there is so much to life after battling the dreaded disease. They showcase this by competing not just in an average dragon boat race, but in an elite level. ‘The Super Models’, the original influencers, come to Apple TV
Naomi, Christy, Linda and Cindy are back, recounting how they revolutionized fashion as the first supermodels in the 1990s in a new series for Apple TV. "The Super Models", which launches on the streaming platform on Wednesday, looks back on the four women who created a template for today's uber-influencers by injecting an element of personality into the job of modelling. Britain's Naomi Campbell, 53, Canada's Linda Evangelista, 58 and the two Americans, Cindy Crawford, 57, and Christy Turlington, 54, dominated the fashion scene during one of its most explosive periods. They worked with the top designers and photographers, though it was a music video, George Michael's "Freedom", which helped cement their status in the public consciousness as the first "supermodels". "(The 1990s) was a very unique time historically, where everything was converging -- fashion, music, you had MTV just starting -- ...right before the brink of the internet," said co-director Larissa Bills. "These women were like the original influencers. Prior to the internet, prior to social media, they were able to bring a whole world to the public in a way that hadn't been done before." It is the first time they have shared their story together. "The fact that they're all in their 50s now... it was the right time. They're in a more reflective space in their lives," said Bills. All from modest backgrounds, the foursome made millions of dollars and reveled in their stardom. But they also faced many of the horrific aspects of the fashion industry -- addiction, eating disorders, sexual harassment. Evangelista faced perhaps the most challenging moments, with a husband accused of rape by other women (the case was finally dropped in early 2023), breast cancer and a botched cosmetic surgery which she says left her "disfigured". Age is an under-current of their discussions, and was underlined again in recent days after the foursome featured on the cover of Vogue in the United States and Britain. The distinct lack of wrinkles led many to accuse the magazine of doctoring the images. For Bills, though, the series is a celebration. "They shouldered such a giant responsibility -- to be 16 years old and the face of a brand. The industry was not regulated at the time and they really did it on their own. Well done to them," she said. adm/er/gil © Agence France-Presse The post ‘The Super Models’, the original influencers, come to Apple TV appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Cervical, breast cancer awareness stressed
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna called on all women residents of the city to be aware of the illnesses common to women as she pushed for the early detection of cervical and breast cancer. Lacuna aired the message as she was joined by Manila Health Department chief Dr. Arnold “Poks” Pangan, Vice Mayor Yul Servo, Department of Public Health Undersecretary Ma. Rosario Vergeire and Philippine Cancer Society Inc. program director Romeo Marcaida during the Intensified Cervical Cancer Screening for Manila City Hall employees held at the City Hall’s Freedom Triangle yesterday. In the said event, Lacuna described as “alarming” the fact that breast and cervical cancer are among the top killers in the country nowadays. She said that public hospitals have the capability to detect cancer at an early stage but lamentably, it is usually too late for many when the said illness is detected. As she also encouraged all female employees to have themselves tested, the mayor expressed concern over the increase in cases of cervical cancer, which is considered a “silent killer,” which manifests in its late stage already. The lady mayor urged all women in Manila to have themselves checked as she also called on parents to have their children aged nine to 14 vaccinated against human papillomavirus, the virus that causes most cervical cancers as well as some cancers of the anus, vulva, vagina and oropharynx or the back of throat including base of tongue and tonsils. She urged women aged 30 to 49 to have themselves screened for breast and cervical cancer where any abnormality may be detected at once. Creation of OFW cancer allotment eyed
Senators backed the suggestion to establish an endowment fund for cancer-stricken overseas Filipino workers dedicated to the late Migrant Workers Secretary Ma. Susana “Toots” Ople recently died due to breast cancer. Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, who chairs the upper chamber’s committee on health, has expressed full support for the creation of a cancer endowment fund, as suggested by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, that would greatly help cancer patients across the country. Go was instrumental in securing a P500-million allocation for the Cancer Assistance Fund or CAF in the 2023 General Appropriations Act of the Department of Health. This was after, he noted that DoH did not include any allocation for the CAF in its proposed 2023 budget. This concern was raised in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. During the National Cancer Summit in February this year, Philippine Society of Medical Oncology president, Dr. Rosario Pitargue, reported that cancer is now the third leading cause of death nationwide, with lung cancer as the top cause of mortality, followed by liver, breast, colon, and prostate. There are 184 cases diagnosed in 100,000 patients and 96 deaths related to cancer are reported daily. Based on the estimates by the Glocal Cancer Observatory, about 153,751 Filipinos suffered from various types of cancer in 2020, with 27,163 patients diagnosed with breast cancer, 19,180 lung cancer patients, and 17,364 colorectum cancer patients. Hence, Go is pushing to double the current allocation of the DoH for the CAF in its 2024 GAA so the government could extend assistance to more cancer patients. PBBM to continue Toots Ople’s mission for OFWs
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. over the weekend assured the overseas Filipino workers that the government would carry on the late Migrant Workers Secretary Susan "Toots" Ople's unfinished mission of promoting their welfare. In his latest vlog, Marcos said he was disheartened over the death of the Migrant Workers chief due to breast cancer, describing Toots as a public servant who truly serves her fellow Filipinos. The President added that Ople's unwavering determination and care for Filipino workers serve as a source of inspiration for them to carry on with her incomplete mission. "Her commitment and concern will inspire us to continue the mission she left behind for our migrant workers. Our OFWs can rely on the fact that we will not stop, but instead, continue the work started by our beloved Susan Ople,” Marcos said. Because of her commitment to advancing the welfare of Filipino workers, Ople was, in Marcos' opinion, the only person he could have trusted to oversee the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). Marcos stated that when he became a senator in 2010, he and Ople collaborated to extend assistance to OFWs facing issues abroad. "I really saw that this person's life revolves around just this thing. (Ople) is always thinking about how they can work to protect our OFW," Marcos said. Hence, Marcos named Ople the first DMW secretary in 2022. Even though Ople had only been the DMW's secretary for a little over a year, the President claimed that she would be remembered for dedicating her life to Filipino workers. "Her entire life is a testament to the work she did for our migrant workers, laborers, and women workers. She is indeed the true champion of these sectors," Marcos said. Meanwhile, Marcos is expected to lead the necrological rites for Ople on Monday, 28 August, at the Kalayaan Hall in Malacañang. The Chief Executive will receive the DMW leader's remains along with members of Ople's family for the closed-door private service. Then, after leaving the Palace, her remains will be brought to the DMW for one last open viewing. The post PBBM to continue Toots Ople’s mission for OFWs appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
PBBM, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos arrives at Secretary Ople’s wake
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos paid their respect to the late Migrant Workers Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople on Wednesday evening. The First Couple arrived at the Heritage Memorial Park at 7:29 p.m. and left the venue at 8:05 p.m. Former President and current Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, former Senator Manny Villar, and his spouse Senator Cynthia Villar also visited Ople’s wake. House Speaker Martin Romualdez also joined the officials in paying respect to the late Migrant Workers secretary. Earlier this week, Marcos said he and the Philippines lost a friend after Ople succumbed to breast cancer at 61. “Secretary Ople is a special person with a deep compassion really really for the people that she had cared for, mainly the migrant workers,” Marcos said.
