Julie Anne thrilled to sing duet with Sarah one day
Julie Anne San Jose has long been GMA Network’s answer to Sarah Geronimo, but the “Maria Clara at Ibarra” star knows better than to claim that she’s in any way on equal footing with the “Popstar Royalty.” When asked playfully by Boy Abunda whether she’s willing to be pitted in a back-to-back concert with Geronimo, San Jose humbly replied: “Oh my God. Na- pressure ako. Unang-una, Tito Boy, hindi po ako lalaban because there is only one Sarah Geronimo. “There can only be one Sarah Geronimo. It would be an honor, of course, na maka-duet po si Miss Sarah. Because I really look up to her.” San Jose appeared as a guest in Abunda’s Fast Talk where she expressed her admiration for Geronimo whom she had never worked with before. “Kasi nga po she’s one of the people that I really look up to and isa siya sa mga naging influences ko rin sa music,” said San Jose. She recalled the first time she met Geronimo in person. “Actually, share ko lang, naging choir po ako sa isang church po namin sa may Mindanao Avenue, and then malapit po si Miss Sarah doon. Tapos nakita ko po siya sa church nag-perform siya kasi Christmas noon so, like, wala lang, fangirling. Nag-fangirl talaga ako. It would be such an honor. I love her,” said San Jose. Covid-19 is here to stay
No doubt waves of jubilation and sighs of relief greeted the recent announcement from the World Health Organization saying Covid-19 was no longer a global health emergency. At a meeting on the pandemic held last week, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesuss told a press conference that the pandemic had been observed to be on a downward trend. “This trend has allowed most countries to return to life as we know it before Covid-19,” said Tedros. “Our emergency committee recommended to me to end the public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice.” Despite the welcome announcement, the WHO official noted that the virus has not stopped spreading, although with a lower level of concern, and therefore, continues to be a global health threat. People should not take the recent WHO pronouncement as a signal to let one’s guard down and return to their usual pre-pandemic lifestyles. It has been observed that even before the seemingly welcome pronouncement, many have long discarded their masks, joined big crowds or assemblies, and have been quite careless in paying attention to hygienic practices. Saying that the virus will continue to transmit, Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, said that this is seen in terms of the virus’s evolution every day “in our communities, age vulnerabilities, protection vulnerabilities, and many other things.” The Department of Health, for its part, said the public should not be confident since the threat remains. “The WHO did not say the pandemic is over, “said DoH Officer-in-Charge Ma. Rosario Vergeire. As early as January of this year, the DoH official already said that if the state of a public health emergency is lifted, the country “will remain cautious and vigilant” and will still be imposing the same restrictions to prevent the spread of the dreaded virus. Although health authorities have not yet seen any reason to ring the alarm bells, a rise in Covid-19 cases has been reported lately. A DoH bulletin issued last week said new Covid-19 cases in the Philippines rose 112 percent in the first week of May. There were 9,465 additional infections, 50 severe and critical. An average of 1,352 cases a day were recorded in the past week. No need to panic, though, as the situation today has been manageable because of recent advances in technology and the availability of vaccines and bed space in hospitals, unlike the first months of the pandemic. The DoH attributed this state of affairs to “our effective and collaborative responses to recover and re-open our economy fully.” So why the increase in the number of cases? Many cite the recent incidences of long weekends that translate to more occasions involving reunions or meetings with families and friends, the opening up of more public spaces like malls, transport stations, cinemas and concert and fun event venues that are virtual crowd-drawers. The disease is not going away anytime soon and is here to stay, said Dr. Maria Van Kerkhave, head of the WHO’s program on emerging diseases. “We just need to make sure we are tracking the virus because it will continue to evolve.” And we must all do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more hospital confinements and, worse, deaths. Since it was declared a pandemic in early 2020, there have been more than 765 million confirmed cases and 7 million deaths worldwide. “Covid-19 continues to leave deep scars,” warns Tedros. “Those scars must serve as permanent reminders of the potential for new viruses to emerge with devastating consequences.” Despite being vaccinated, I got infected with COVID-19 early on during my stint as commissioner of the Bureau of Customs last year. The good thing was I quickly recovered and returned to work after my self-imposed quarantine ended. Recently, there have been reports of outbreaks in areas where people gather, particularly in crowded indoor settings where people talk loudly or breathe heavily, like gyms and music or choir practices. Be involved. Wear your mask again if you have dropped the habit. As health experts suggest, avoid the 3Cs: closed spaces, crowded locations, and close contact with people, especially in places with inadequate ventilation. Better, meet your friends outside. Isolate yourself when sick and follow your doctor’s prescriptions. Get vaccine/booster shots when necessary. The life you save may be your own. Opera icon Grace Bumbry dies at 86
Mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry, a pioneering Black opera singer who blazed trials and broke barriers, has died, her son and publicist announced Monday. She was 86. The artist died on May 7 at a hospital in Vienna, having suffered a stroke in October, according to her adopted son David Lee Brewer, who was speaking to the press agency APA. The decorated singer made her operatic debut in Paris in 1960, playing Amneris in "Aida," and became a favorite of US first lady Jackie Kennedy. Over a nearly four-decade career, Bumbry received great acclaim for her performances in roles that showcased her wide vocal range and singular star power. Grace-Melzia Bumbry was born in St. Louis on January 4, 1937, to parents hailing from Mississippi. A unique talent in the church choir, she grew up in an era of profound racial segregation and was barred from entering the local music conservatory. But she went on to study at Boston University and Northwestern University on scholarships, later going with her instructor Lotte Lehmann to the Music Academy of the West in California to hone her operatic and stage skills. Following fellow pioneering Black artists including Marian Anderson and Leontyne Price, Bumbry was a major figure in breaking down racial barriers entrenched in classical music. She gained international attention in 1961 when she became the first African American to perform at Germany's Bayreuth Festival, an institution dedicated to Richard Wagner, a figure acclaimed for his music but whose anti-Semitism and white supremacist views have complicated his artistic legacy. Wagnerites voiced some protest that she would perform, but the composer's grandson, Wieland Wagner, said "I require no ideal Nordic specimens," arguing that his grandfather's music was "for vocal color, not skin color." Across her storied career, Bumbry gained a reputation for glamour and high living, wearing dramatic gowns and jewels while sating a penchant for show dogs and luxury cars. In 2009 she was awarded a Kennedy Center Honor, among the highest American arts awards, in the presence of then-president Barack Obama. She lived for years in Switzerland and later settled in Vienna, retiring from opera in 1997 after gracing the world's most prestigious stages for decades. Bumbry remained professionally active as a teacher and concert performer, also founding the Grace Bumbry Black Musical Heritage Ensemble. Austria's Secretary of State, Andrea Mayer, hailed Bumbry as "a pioneer for generations of opera singers." "With her legendary debut at Bayreuth in the 1960s, she made a decisive contribution to equal rights in the world of opera," Mayer said in a statement. Palace concert showcases Pinoy talent
Malacañang Palace hosts its very first concert series, Konsyerto sa Palasyo, which aims to showcase the country’s new and upcoming performing artists every three months, one of its organizers said earlier this week. During the Laging Handa public briefing, KSP’s creative consultant Cris Villonco explained that the Office of the President launched the initiative to provide a platform for different genres of Filipino talent. “We are planning to showcase it every three months. This means that every three months, there will be a new program, a new show, a new set of artists, and hopefully, another part of the grounds of Malacañang,” Villonco said. Villonco said the concert series would feature various artists from all over the country. She added, “We were able to search high and low from all parts of the country for new artists.” The theme for the first KSP concert series is “Konsyerto sa Palasyo: Awit ng Magiting” in honor of the men and women of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The concert aims to pay tribute to these brave individuals who served the country during the Araw ng Kagitingan celebration held on 9 April. As a creative consultant, Villonco has been part of the team responsible for researching, developing the program, and directing the show. She worked with Undersecretary Franz Imperial of the Presidential Communications Office and the broadcast production team to put together the program. The first concert, which started on 22 April, featured various artists, including harpists and harp makers, vocalists, rappers, spoken word artists, and a choir. Villonco expressed her excitement for the lineup, saying, “We are so excited because many children would join and there are lively and energetic performers in the Palace.” The concert series has already garnered significant support, with KSP’s Facebook page and TikTok account receiving many likes and follows. The event is a joint effort of several offices, including the Office of the President, the Social Secretary’s Office, the Presidential Communications Office, and the Presidential Broadcast Staff-Radio Television Malacañang.
