Cargo Movers book semis ticket

Top seed F2 Logistics easily booked a spot in the Final Four after knocking out Iriga City, 25-19, 25-12, 25-17, Tuesday in the knockout quarterfinals of the 2017 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. The Cargo Movers only needed 79 minutes to dispose the no. 8 ranked Oragons and advance into the sudden-death semifinals against the winner between Cignal and Cocolife. American import Kennedy Bryan and Venezuelan reinforcement Maria Jose Perez had plenty of help from the local crew for the walk in the park win against the same team they dominated in their elimination round meeting. Bryan scattered 14 points with 12 coming off attacks while Perez hammered 12 markers with all but one coming off spikes for the Ramil De Jesus-mentored squad. Kim Kianna Dy contributed with nine points while reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player Majoy Baron and Aby Maraño combined for 10 points for F2 Logistics. Kim Fajardo tallied 18 excellent sets for the Cargo Movers, who got 27 free points off errors committed by Iriga City. F2 Logistics was just too much for the Oragons to handle, pouncing on Iriga City with missiles coming off all angles and keeping a choking defense at the net to build an early lead before cruising on each of the sets. Import Tamara Kmezic and Saam Miyagawa finished with 15 and 10 points, respectively, for Iriga City but received an anemic contributions from their locals. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Tennis star Venus Williams settles fatal crash lawsuit

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Tennis star Venus Williams has settled a wrongful death lawsuit related to a fatal car crash in Florida, court records show. Palm Beach County court records show that the case was closed Friday. Terms of the agreement between Williams and the estate of Jerome Barson, 78, weren't included in the documents. Palm Beach Gardens police previously cleared both Williams and Barson's wife, Linda, in the June 9, 2017 crash that fatally injured Barson. A police report said an unidentified third vehicle illegally cut off Williams as she tried to cross a busy six-lane highway near her home, setting off a chain of events that ended with a sedan driven by Linda Barson, 68, slamming into the passenger side of Williams' SUV. Jerome Barson died 13 days after the crash, and his wife suffered a broken arm and other injuries. Williams, 38, was not hurt. Officer David Dowling, the lead investigator, said in his report that video from a nearby security camera shows Williams legally entered the intersection from a road exiting her gated neighborhood on a green light. As she started to cross, a dark sedan cut her off, forcing her to stop. When the sedan cleared her path, Williams began moving forward in her 2010 Toyota Sequoia, but that put her in the path of the Barsons, who now had the green light. The Barsons' 2016 Hyundai Accent hit Williams' SUV at 40 mph (65 kph). Dowling said in his report that state law required Williams to exit the intersection and that even though Linda Barson had the green light she was obligated to make sure the intersection was clear. Williams has career on-court earnings of about $40 million, her own clothing line and endorsement deals with Ralph Lauren, Kraft foods, Tide detergent and Wilson sporting goods. She also owns a small percentage of the Miami Dolphins. Attorneys for Williams and the Barsons didn't immediately return messages seeking comment......»»

Playwright Alberto S. Florentino, 1931-2018

NEW YORK---I heard last month, from the fictionist Cecilia Manguerra Brainard, that the writer Alberto Florentino had passed away in late September. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia, complicated by the fact that he had had Alzheimer's for some time. At the time of his death, Bert had been living with his wife, Eva, in Portland, Oregon, where they had moved from New York about a decade ago, to be closer to their daughter Lisa and her family. I knew of Bert before I met him in New York. He had made a name for himself by winning a Palanca award for his play The World Is an Apple, when he was all of twenty-three years of age. Significantly, Bert had also been the publishe...Keep on reading: Playwright Alberto S. Florentino, 1931-2018.....»»

FEU made a final play for the Final Four in UAAP Season 81, dominating no. 2-seed Adamson, Saturday at the MOA Arena. The Tamaraws got the pivotal 8th win that they needed, forcing a sudden-death against La Salle for the last ticket to the playoffs. "Malaking bagay to of course," head coach Olsen Racela said. "We have one game to play to make it to the Final Four, we'll take full advantage of that," he added. FEU is yet to prepare for the Green Archers, obviously their focus lately has been Adamson. However, prep for La Salle immediately starts after this win and the Tamaraws vow to come ready Wednesday. Because this big win will be wasted if they turn out to be duds against the Green Archers.
