PSA launches 2022 Census on Agriculture and Fisheries
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) launched the 2022 Census on Agriculture and Fisheries (CAF) in provinces and barangays on Monday, 4 September. Target respondents for the 2022 CAF are operators of crops, livestock, poultry, insects/worm culturing, aquaculture, and/or fishing activity from 1 January to 31 December 2022, while at the barangay level will be the barangay chairpersons or any incumbent barangay official. Data collected from the census, which will run until 25 October this year, will serve as relevant bases for public leaders to create policies, plans, and programs to enhance the Philippines’ socio-economic status. The 2022 CAF will also provide an inventory of agricultural and fishery resources, basic information on crops and livestock, statistics on land distribution and operations, benchmarks for measuring progress, data for local area planning, a sampling frame for surveys, information for monitoring progress toward Sustainable Development Goals, and data needed by the United Nations Organizations for international comparability and observing the global food situation. “This milestone event signified the beginning of a comprehensive household and barangay data collection process. It underscores the PSA’s commitment to empowering our agricultural and fisheries sectors with accurate information, actionable insights, and a collective vision for the future,” said PSA Undersecretary and National Statistician Claire Dennis S. Mapa during the 2022 CAF press conference. The provinces of Pangasinan, Bukidnon, and Iloilo will have full coverage under the 2022 CAF due to the areas’ production volume and value in the country’s agriculture industry. Meanwhile, PSA enumerators will also make their rounds in cities, where urban farms and community gardens flourish. In line with the government agency’s bid for efficiency and accuracy, the PSA partnered with actress Bea Alonzo, who is also the proprietor of Beati Firma in Iba, Zambales, to encourage the farmers and fisherfolks to participate in the census. “We want to achieve ‘yung mileage, information, education campaign dito sa ating census. As you know, when we go to each of the houses during census time, not all respondents are so welcoming. With Bea here, she will help us,” PSA Deputy National Statistician Minerva Eloisa Esquivias said. “Alam ko po mga challenges ng farming: Masamang panahon, bagyo po talaga, minsan bigla na lang may babagsak na mga puno, minsan po mataas ang presyo ng binhi. So, ’yun po ang challenges sa pagiging farmer,” Alonzo said. Other modern steps that the PSA took to ensure the success of the 2022 CAF is equipping its enumerators with tablets to expedite the data collection and compiling process. It’ll also be the first time the government agency will use artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms developed by the Department of Science and Technology’s Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) to detect, map, and estimate the area for selected crops and aquafarms. Throughout the data collection period, the PSA also advises respondents to be vigilant in recognizing their legitimate numerators before giving out any relevant information about themselves, their families, and their properties. The PSA aims to release data gathered from 2022 CAF in the first quarter of 2024. The 2022 CAF is the seventh in PSA’s decennial agricultural and fisheries census series and is conducted every 10 years. Bong Go boosts fire victims’ recovery in Cebu City
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go has remained steadfast in his dedication to assisting disaster victims as shown by his team’s relief operations on Monday, 14 August, to communities affected by fires in Cebu City. Go’s team, in coordination with Mayor Mike Rama, Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), assisted 103 recovering fire victims gathered at the Atillo Gymnasium in Barangay Punta Princesa. DTI provided livelihood assistance through its Pangkabuhayan sa Pagbangon at Ginhawa (PPG) program which Go pushed for during the Duterte administration and continues to support its implementation in order to boost livelihood recovery of those affected by various crises. In addition to the livelihood support, Go’s team provided shirts and masks to all beneficiaries, and a pair of shoes, a watch, a cellular phone, and balls for basketball to select recipients. “Sa panahon ng kahirapan at pagsubok dulot ng iba't-ibang sakuna, nais namin sa inyo'y magbigay ng pag-asa at tulong na magbibigay daan sa inyong mga pangarap. Ang programa na ito ay hindi lamang simpleng tulong kundi isang oportunidad upang makabangon at makamtan ang mas magandang kinabukasan,” stressed Go. Go underscored the crucial role of DTI’s PPG program in providing opportunities for sustainable income generation and the agency’s dedication to assisting affected communities in their journey toward recovery and rebuilding their lives. “Palaguin niyo ang inyong negosyo. Kapag lumago ang inyong negosyo, dalhin niyo po ang mga kita sa inyong mga pamilya... mas masarap sa pakiramdam kapag pinagpawisan at pinaghirapan niyo po ang inyong pagnenegosyo,” he added. In a video message, Go highlighted his other efforts to enhance disaster preparedness, response, and recovery strategies on a broader scale. He also asked for support for the passage of Senate Bill No. 188, which aims to establish the Department of Disaster Resilience (DDR). The proposed legislation envisions a new government department led by a cabinet secretary, focusing on comprehensive approaches to strengthen disaster preparedness across the country. The DDR's core areas of concentration include disaster risk reduction, disaster preparedness, response and recovery, and the advancement of resilience. Iyan po ang Department of Disaster Resilience at restoration of normalcy kaagad,” he added. As chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Go initiated the Malasakit Centers program in 2018 in Cebu City after he personally witnessed the struggles of financially incapacitated Filipinos in getting medical assistance from the government. It was later institutionalized under Republic Act No. 11463, which he principally sponsored and authored. To date, there are 158 Malasakit Centers, including those at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), Cebu City Medical Center, and St. Anthony Mother & Child Hospital, that have helped over seven million Filipinos, according to the Department of Health (DOH). Other Malasakit Centers in the province are located at Cebu Provincial Hospital in Carcar City, Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital, Eversley Childs Sanitarium and General Hospital in Mandaue City, and Talisay District Hospital in Talisay City. Moreover, Go said DOH has identified areas to construct Super Health Centers (SHCs) in the province. SHCs were funded to be established in the cities of Bogo, Danao, Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue; and in the towns of Borbon, Cordova, Moalboal, Samboan, and San Francisco in 2022. This year, more Super Health Centers were funded in the cities of Carcar, Cebu, Talisay, and Toledo; and in the towns of Carmen, Consolacion, Liloan, Medellin, and San Nicolas. An additional SHC will also be established in Danao City. “Ang isang malaking bagay dito ay ang early detection kung may sakit ang isang pasyente. Dahil nasa kanilang komunidad ang SHC, madali na para sa kanya ang magpakonsulta. At kung malalaman agad ang sakit ng isang pasyente, mabibigyan siya ng primary care, malalapatan ng lunas, at lalaki ang tsansa na maka-recover siya sa kanyang sakit,” he explained. SHCs offer database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy, and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) service; oncology centers; physical therapy and rehabilitation center; and telemedicine. Go, vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance, supported the funding of various projects in the province, including the construction of multipurpose buildings in Barili, Cordova, Ginatilan, Pilar, Tabogon, and Talisay City; improvement of existing roads in Alcantara, Alcoy, Alegria, Asturias, Balamban, Boljoon, Borbon, Carmen, Madrilejos, Malabuyoc, Minglanilla, Moalboal, Pinamungajan, Sibonga, Sogod, Tabogon, Tabuelan, Carcar City and Naga City; improvement of flood mitigation structures in Catmon and Tuburan; installation of street lights in Asturias, Compostela, and Daanbantayan; and acquisition of ambulance units for Madridejos and Naga City. SBG assists typhoon victims in Benguet and Pampanga
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go’s team visited Macabebe, Pampanga and Tuba Benguet to distribute food packs on Saturday, 12 August. Go aided 500 flood victims at the respective barangay halls of Saplad David and San Roque, in coordination with Kagawad Julius Gabucay of Brgy. San Roque, former military officer Glen Agudo, and other volunteers in Pampanga. Meanwhile, Go also assisted 2,500 affected residents at Barangay 3 Hall and Barangay 6 gymnasium in Tuba, Benguet in coordination with Governor Melchor Diclas. Demonstrating his strong commitment to creating a more disaster-resilient nation, Go continues to advocate for the passage of two critical bills: Senate Bill No. (SBN) 188, which proposes the establishment of the Department of Disaster Resilience (DDR), and SBN 193, also known as the Mandatory Evacuation Center Act. These bills aim to enhance the government’s capacity to effectively respond to calamities and provide essential shelters for disaster victims. SBN 188 outlines the creation of DDR, an agency focused on developing comprehensive measures to bolster the government's disaster response capabilities. Similarly, SBN 193 emphasizes the importance of establishing evacuation centers equipped with proper facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of those displaced by disasters. Go emphasized the necessity of these measures, considering the various types of disasters that frequently impact the country, such as floods, typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and fires. He underscored his dedication to advancing the establishment of the DDR and the mandatory evacuation centers to address these challenges effectively. He emphasized the value of life and the importance of safeguarding the well-being of every individual. On 8 August , fire victims received relief from Bong Go’s team in San Fernando City in Pampanga. Go also supported the improvement of farm-to-market roads in Atok and Buguias, rehabilitation of roads in Kabayan and Sablan, acquisition of multipurpose vehicles in Bakun and Kibungan, and the construction of a public market in Kapangan in Benguet. DHSUD extends cash assistance to ‘Egay’ victims
Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar on Tuesday ordered the release of cash assistance for families who lost their homes following the havoc of Typhoon "Egay." In an emergency meeting, Acuzar directed Undersecretary Avelino Tolentino III and Undersecretary Randy Escolango to start downloading the fund to regional offices affected by the typhoon. The DHSUD Central Office is making available P23 million for emergency assistance to residents whose houses were totally damaged. "We must focus our efforts now in assisting families who lost their homes. Let's expedite the delivery dahil kailangan na ito agad," Acuzar said. "Kailangan proactive lagi tayo sa pagtulong sa ating mga kababayan na naapektuhan ng bagyo... Dapat maramdaman agad ang tulong at malasakit ng gobyerno," the DHSUD chief added. As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, a total of 1,954 residential structures had been totally damaged by the typhoon, mostly from Regions 1, 2 and the Cordillera Administrative Region. Acuzar also instructed DHSUD attached agencies, particularly the National Housing Authority and the Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG Fund, to start providing assistance. The NHA is initially allotting P50 million from its emergency housing assistance program. Pag-IBIG Fund, on the other hand, has started offering calamity loans with lower interest rate per annum to "Egay" victims. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Sunday announced that the government will be providing the necessary assistance to typhoon victims. "We will be working closely with local government units in the affected areas to ensure the timely and transparent delivery of our assistance," said Acuzar. So far, DHSUD, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration and the USAID, has already distributed 1,086 shelter-grade tarpaulins, and 600 solar lamps. Bong Go assists disaster victims in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan
"Mga kababayan ko nandito po ako para makabigay ng kaunting tulong sa mga apektado ng bagyo," Senator Christopher "Bong" Go said during relief operations for communities affected by the typhoon in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan on Monday, 31 July. On the same day, Go also extended assistance to typhoon victims in Santa Ana town. In light of the recent devastation caused by Typhoon Egay, Go emphasized his commitment to extending assistance to those affected to the best of his capacity. This comes as a response to the ongoing crisis, where several provinces have been declared under a state of calamity due to extensive fatalities and damage in the wake of the typhoon and the subsequent monsoon rains. "Gaya ng ginagawa ko po noon, tuwing mayroong bagyo, sinusubukan ko talagang makabisita dito at makatulong. Noon, sa Aparri at iba't ibang bayan pa,” Go said even as he assured residents that his office is committed to conducting relief efforts, just like what they did during previous calamities. Earlier, Cagayan was declared under a state of calamity due to destruction caused by Typhoon Egay, as recommended by its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council. Despite the somber situation, he expressed his hopes that the efforts of his office and the government can bring a slight smile to those grieving, underlining the importance of empathy and understanding during these trying times. "Alam ko malungkot ang mga kababayan natin, pero kapag nakikita kong masaya sila masaya na rin po ako. Kaya po ako narito para tumulong po sa abot ng aking makakaya, mapakinggan ang inyong mga hinaing, isulong ang mga proyektong makakapagpaunlad ng inyong lugar, ilapit ang mga serbisyo ng gobyerno na makakatulong sa inyong muling pagbangon, at makapag-iwan ng ngiti sa oras ng inyong pagdadalamhati,” he said. The senator also took time to express his gratitude towards local officials who have been working tirelessly to provide service to their constituents amid these trying times. He also acknowledged the unwavering commitment to public service of several officials including Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba, Sanchez Mira Mayor Abraham Bagasin and Vice Mayor Asela Sacramed. Go urged that the national government and the local government units must work hand in hand to aid the affected communities. "Nandito po ang ating gobernador, ang ating LGU, local government para makikipagtulungan po, maiahon po natin ang ating mga kababayan. Magtulungan lang po tayo,” said Go. Meanwhle, Go stressed the need to establish the Department of Disaster Resilience (DDR) in order to improve the country's readiness and ability to respond to future disasters. He emphasized that this department would consolidate and streamline efforts in disaster management, resulting in a more productive and efficient response to natural calamities. Go and his team held a relief activity at the municipal gym of Sanchez Mira, where they assisted 1,500 typhoon victims. The beneficiaries received food packs, masks, vitamins, and snacks. Cellular phones, shoes, bicycles, watches, shirts, and balls for basketball and volleyball were also distributed to several individuals. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Agriculture extended assistance to the beneficiaries. Bong Go provides support to flood victims in Davao City
In an effort to bolster the country's disaster preparedness and response capabilities, Senator Christopher "Bong" Go has been advocating for two crucial bills in the Senate that he earlier filed: Senate Bill No. (SBN) 188, which seeks to establish the Department of Disaster Resilience (DDR), and SBN 193, mandating the establishment of mandatory evacuation centers nationwide. On Saturday, July 29, Go led two relief operations for thousands of flood victims in Barangays Lasang and Bunawan in Davao City. In his speech, Go said that the government should remain proactive in its approach in dealing with disaster-related situations, considering that the country is highly vulnerable to natural calamities. SBN 188 proposes the creation of the DDR, an independent government agency dedicated to strengthening the nation's resilience against the impacts of natural and human-induced disasters. The DDR aims to consolidate disaster-related functions and resources from different agencies under a single, unified body. By streamlining disaster response efforts, the department can facilitate quicker and more efficient aid delivery to affected communities during times of crisis. Preposition of goods by the DSWD,” Go added. Restoration of normalcy kaagad at rehabilitation effort,” he said. The Office of Civil Defense has recently voiced its support for the establishment of the DDR, emphasizing the importance of such institution in improving operations in managing and responding to future crises. "Things can be better if there will be an independent authority or department, but it’s not that simple – tanggap po namin iyon… We leave it to Congress and we leave it to the Palace, to Malacañang. Meanwhile, kami naman, we are doing our best given the limitations, makakaasa po kayo," OCD Administrator Ariel Nepomuceno said in a past interview. Alongside the establishment of DDR, Go champions SBN 193, which calls for the creation of mandatory evacuation centers across the Philippines. These evacuation centers are designed to be equipped with necessary facilities to provide temporary shelter and essential services to evacuees during disasters. The senator noted that these evacuation centers will be strategically placed in areas less prone to hazards, ensuring the safety and well-being of evacuees during disasters. Furthermore, the centers will be equipped with essential amenities such as food, clean water, medical services, sanitation facilities, and temporary sleeping quarters. Go cited that the Philippines, located in the Pacific Ring of Fire and the typhoon belt, is no stranger to the destructive forces of nature. “Yearly, the country faces the threat of typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and other hazards. These disasters not only result in loss of lives and livelihoods but also impede economic progress and development,” shared Go. To minimize the devastating impact of disasters, Go underscored that comprehensive disaster resilience measures are imperative. The senator is confident that by supporting these priority bills, the Senate and the Filipino people can collectively work towards a safer, more resilient nation, where communities can recover swiftly and thrive even in the face of adversity. “Ang lugar natin nasa Pacific Ring of Fire tayo. Together with Councilors Dante Apostol, Marissa Abella, Diosdado Mahipus, and Al Ryan Alejandre, Go provided grocery packs, masks, vitamins, and snacks to 4,399 flood victims. The senator also extended shoes, mobile phones, bicycles, watches, and balls for basketball and volleyball to select recipients. Meanwhile, Go, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, urged those who have health issues to seek assistance from the Malasakit Center at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao City. The Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which Go principally authored and sponsored, brings together various government agencies, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Department of Health (DHOH), the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PHIC), and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), under one roof to provide a convenient process for availing medical assistance particularly for poor and indigent patients in public hospitals. There are now 158 Malasakit Centers nationwide which have assisted more than seven million Filipinos, according to DOH data. In SPMC alone, the Malasakit Center there has assisted more than 200,000 patients. On the same day, Go attended the ribbon-cutting of the multipurpose building in Brgy. Lasang and road concretion with drainage canal construction in Brgy. Bunawan, two infrastructure projects he supported the funding of as vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance. He likewise supported the acquisition of multi-purpose vehicles for the community, construction of various multipurpose buildings and local roads, rehabilitation of water systems, drainage systems and flood control structures in different barangays throughout the city, the construction of a 300-bed capacity infectious diseases building for SPMC and the acquisition of ambulances, among others. ### The post Bong Go provides support to flood victims in Davao City appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
