The coat that feels like a hug
This year, Teddy turns 10. Who, you might ask, is Teddy? Teddy is the “It Coat” of Max Mara. Made of 100 percent pure camel hair, the iconic coat has transcended time and trends. “It’s a ‘first love’ coat – you see it, you buy it, you keep it forever,” someone said of this must-have at the recent celebration of the coat’s 10th anniversary. Max Mara, a brand of quiet luxury, has its Fall/Winter collection’s key pieces tastefully displayed at its Greenbelt 5 store. Other colors in the collection -- like sand and gray -- are made of alpaca and wool. The reason for this, the brand explains, is that if they use camel hair for a color like sand, the result would not be pure. This standout fall/winter piece has a silk lining, which makes the coat lighter than it looks. The coat material, soft and fluffy, feels much like a teddy bear. To achieve this effect, they wash the fabric in a special way. [metaslider id=199894] “It feels like a hug,” might as well be the cocoon-shaped, oversized, double-breasted Teddy Coat’s mantra. The coat is a great choice for travel. It doesn’t get wrinkled; it’s light; and it can be squeezed in one’s luggage but it won’t lose its shape. The Teddy is one of Max Mara’s iconic coats, which are always produced every year. [caption id="attachment_199911" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] THE colors in the collection — like sand and gray —are made of alpaca and wool.PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOY ASAGRA FOR THE DAILY TRIBUNE[/caption] Another is the “perfect wrap coat” -- the more feminine Manuela, also made with 100-percent camel hair. This one is sleeker, the fabric’s zibeline texture giving it a different feel. Notice the visible Max Mara stitching, also seen in their pure cashmere iconic coat, that distinguishes the brand from others. The brand’s “art icon” is the Madame, or 101821, the only one which comes with its own hanger and personalized dust bag. With buttons made of real horn, and the “beaver”-like material made of cashmere and wool, this coat is said to be “the best-known Max Mara piece in the world, an icon of modern, contemporary design.” [caption id="attachment_199913" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] Max Mara, a quiet luxury brand, has its Fall/Winter collection’s key pieces tastefully displayed at its Greenbelt 5 store.[/caption] This coat, designed with “precise proportions,” has a special lining that is stitched with a label bearing a history of the coat. It reveals the designer Anne-Marie Beretta’s first sketch of the design in 1981. Until today, the coat has remained a classic, with only the addition of a belt in the latest release. All Max Mara coats are made in Italy. The post The coat that feels like a hug appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
London Fashion Week says sheer is back for spring, summer 2024
Transparent and revealing looks will make a comeback for spring and summer 2024, according to trends spotted at London Fashion Week, which wrapped up on Tuesday. Midriffs on display Crop top lovers can carry on baring their midriffs, and more, while staying bang on trend. Most designers had models in bralettes or bandeaus, or even simple bikini tops, worn with a jacket or open knit. Erdem had an elegant take on the look, pairing bralettes with high-waisted long skirts. All laced up A light yellow JW Anderson tank top used multiple ties at the front to give glimpses of skin without revealing too much. Di Petsa, whose collection was inspired by Venus the goddess of love, embraced lacing in a different way to reveal models' breasts and midriffs. Short and transparent Tiny skirts and dresses came thick and fast on the catwalks and even when they were long, they were very figure-hugging. Sheer looks were also in vogue, with Feben offering a completely transparent shirt in both lilac and black. Feben, a recent graduate of London's Central Saint Martins university, sent out a collection of largely transparent dresses made entirely of beads with long fringed skirts. Di Petsa's white draped dresses also had plenty of skin on show and Londoner Sinead Gorey showcased a green lace jumpsuit that left very little to the imagination. Frills and ruffles Frills and ruffles made a big appearance on the catwalks, whether on skirts, dresses or tops. Susan Fang used garnishes on a long tulle dress to give a lightness to the look, while Bora Aksu also went heavy on the frills in his show. Oversized trenches Burberry showed off reinventions of its famous trench coat, with artistic director Daniel Lee displaying variations that were both wider and belted low on the hips for men and women. An orange trench, a far cry from the classic beige, made a splash on the catwalk, while JW Anderson offered mid-thigh level bombers which could be worn like a dress. Catwalk diversity The days of catwalks being the exclusive preserve of slim, young, white models were long gone. British-Nigerian designer Tolu Coker used only black models in her show celebrating Yoruba culture. Models of all ages walked the runway at Eudon Choi's show, where some of the looks were presented by older women. Many designers also veered away from the size zero look, with Di Petsa embracing a variety of model sizes on the catwalk. After London, the shows continue in Milan and Paris. Savoy dynasty daily life on display with Geneva auction
Porcelain figurines, a white faux-leather sofa and a foosball table: these are among the items in a House of Savoy auction, providing a rare glimpse into the everyday life of royals. More than 200 objects are going under the hammer this week, drawn from the former Geneva home of Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy -- the son of the last king of Italy, Umberto II -- and his wife Marina. Royal aficionados may be interested in a delicate 18th century tea cup, a modernist game of chess, or two motorcycles owned by the couple's 51-year-old son, Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy. A portion of the lots are being sold off online until September 18, while others will feature in an in-person auction two days later hosted by the Geneve Encheres auction house. In all, the objects being sold by the couple are expected to fetch between 100,000 and 150,000 Swiss francs ($112,000-$168,000). But Cyril Duval, a partner at Geneve Encheres, told AFP the value estimates were not really important, since the collection was more about "falling in love". This auction, he said, "makes it possible for collectors to obtain certain objects they may have dreamt about after seeing them in magazines or on the screen". The collection comprises of historical memorabilia and some household items from the villa the Savoy family had built in the 1970s in Vesenaz, on the outskirts of Geneva. Vittorio Emanuele is the 86-year-old head of the House of Savoy, whose family was forced to leave Italy after the monarchy was abolished in 1946. 'Rock and roll' Among the items for sale is "a 19th century dinner set used during a ball hosted by Queen Victoria in London City Hall", Duval said. There are also objects linked to the Savoy family heritage, including engraved silver coat of arms and porcelain figurines, but also bronze statuettes recalling the modernist interior style of the Geneva villa. The collection also includes items that are "much more pop", Duval said. He highlighted one of the two motorcycles, a 1941 Indian Sport Scout, with an asking price of 15,000-20,000 Swiss francs ($16,800-$22,400). "It belonged to crown prince Emanuele Filiberto, a 20th century rock and roll prince with tattooed arms," he said. The grandson of Italy's last king, who is married to French actress Clotilde Courau, enjoyed riding his motorcycles with Johnny Hallyday, the late French rock legend, he added. Duval explained that the auction was taking place after "the prince and princess left and sold" the Geneva villa this year, opting to stay in their residence in the luxury Swiss ski resort town of Gstaad instead. Vittorio Emanuele was born in Naples in 1937, less than a decade before the monarchy ended and his family was forced to leave Italy. He and other male heirs of the Savoy family were sent into exile because his grandfather Vittorio Emmanuele III had collaborated with the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini on anti-Jewish laws during World War II. Vittorio Emmanuele III abdicated in May 1946 after 46 years on the throne, and his son Umberto II succeeded him, but only for a month before a June referendum abolished the monarchy. The Italian parliament only ended a constitutional ban on the House of Savoy's male heirs returning to Italy in 2002, after Vittorio Emanuele and Emanuele Filiberto swore loyalty to the republic, but they have continued living mainly in Switzerland. Confession of a skeptic cat parent
I used to be skeptical about owning a cat and didn’t see the appeal. I thought cats were distant and not affectionate based on stereotypes and my limited experience. Growing up, we didn’t have cats. I rarely saw one inside our house. Pet dogs are a different story. Having had several since my world began, I believed dogs were loyal and formed deep bonds with their owners, while cats appeared aloof and uninterested in forming connections. I didn’t want a pet that would only tolerate me without showing genuine affection. Am I to be blamed for having reservations about the cleanliness and upkeep involved in owning a cat? My mother and only brother were wheezers. The idea of handling cat fur, cleaning litter boxes, and the possibility of allergies brought uncertainty about having them as pets. I initially preferred a pet that required less maintenance, or at least I thought so. My viewpoint started to shift when a colleague in the government welcomed a cat into their home. Back in 2016, I observed a new aspect of having a feline companion that hadn’t crossed my mind previously. This cat displayed affection, playfulness, and sincere love towards its owner. I witnessed how the cat offered solace and companionship, particularly during challenging moments. One day in 2017, my daughter came home from school with an orange kitten – we guessed he was five months old. He was a “puspin” (short for pusang Pinoy or Pinoy cat) with a short coat that had lost its kitten fluff. The puspin had followed her from the condo gate like a child afraid of getting lost. Driven by my curiosity, I yielded to the temptation and chose to dedicate some time to interact with my daughter’s cat we named Sam. To my astonishment, I formed a strong connection with the feline in a short period. Sam’s tender purrs, lively behavior, and instances of cozying up disarmed the skeptic in me. It also dawned on me that cats could provide companionship and a distinct form of love that, although different from dogs, held an equally significant worth. American novelist Ernest Hemingway’s “One cat just leads to another” quote is spot on. More than five years after adopting Sam, we now share the house with nine other “puspins.” In time, I uncovered the cats’ diverse personalities. It is wrong to say that all cats exhibit independence and are reserved because they, too, are sociable and yearn for human interaction. It took more than five decades for me to realize that cats can forge profound connections with their owners, thereby transforming them into loyal companions. Together with my children, the responsibilities of litter box maintenance, grooming, and maintaining a cat-friendly home became part of our daily routine. We join other cat parents and feline enthusiasts across the globe on August 8 in celebrating one of man’s most common and ancient pets. International Cat Day, created by the International Fund for Animal Welfare in 2002, is an annual occasion that commemorates cats, advocates for their well-being, and promotes responsible pet ownership. In emphasizing the importance and worth of these remarkable companions in our lives, we discovered our other roles by respecting and communicating with the cat world. Chinese zoo denies rare sun bear is human in disguise
A Chinese zoo has been forced to deny that its sun bear is actually a human in a costume, after footage of one standing on its hind legs raised online accusations of a furry imposter. A video clip of a bear rearing up and interacting with a group of people at a zoo in eastern Hangzhou city went viral on Chinese social media. Many users posted comments doubting that the bear was real, with some alleging that its bipedal posture and wrinkled skin suggested that it was actually a human in costume. But the zoo dismissed the rumors, saying in a statement written from the bear's perspective on Sunday that the animal was real and its detractors "really don't understand me". "The zoo director called me after work yesterday and asked if I'd been slacking off by finding a two-legged beast to replace me," the bear, named Angela, said in the statement. "Some people thought the way I stand up looks too human... so I will stress again: I'm a sun bear!" Native to Southeast Asia, sun bears are named for a patch of bright orange or cream-colored chest fur that stands out against the rest of its jet-black coat. It is the smallest bear -- about the size of a large dog -- and is listed as a vulnerable species due to deforestation and the global wildlife trade. Other Chinese zoos have previously been accused of stocking their enclosures with animals that are not what they seem -- including a hairy dog passed off as an "African lion" and a pool filled with penguin-shaped balloons. Beauty is an avid art collector, should she have known better?
Beauty Gonzales and the jewelry she wore for the GMA Gala 2023 are being excoriated all across social media as it had been belatedly noticed (according to her Instagram) she was wearing "Centuries-old Gold Neck Piece and Earrings are Excavated Eye and Mouth Covers from distant places like Butuan and Surigao". The post of curator and art critic Marian Pastor Roces on Facebook called attention to the ethics of her accessories: Someone tell this woman that the orifice covers she is paying "homage" to are grave robber stuff. Because if these were legally excavated, the pieces would belong to the National Museum or the Bangko Sentral. If the pieces are not reproductions, how was the jeweler even able to get them? And re-fashioning these sacred gold pieces into a necklace feels just a smidgen of Cruella de Ville and her desire for coat of dalmatians, does it not? Beauty Gonzales is also a known art collector and her husband Norman Crisologo is an art dealer/curator. When she toured the Gold Squad of "Kadenang Ginto" around her home in 2019, she showed an affinity for reworked religious imagery and iconography as shown by the pieces there that she herself pointed out. Neither Beauty Gonzales nor the jeweler have made any statements amid growing criticism. Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion
By Jocelyn Valle and Ann Jenireene Gomez Ralph Lauren is easily one of the most mispronounced designer labels around. For the record, this American icon of fashion is pronounced this way: “Ralf LO-ren,” according to Martin Elmer Santos, the manager of Ralph Lauren’s Polo brand boutique at Greenbelt 5. That’s right, not the French-sounding “Ralf Lo-Rahn.” [caption id="attachment_160185" align="aligncenter" width="853"] AUBREY Miles and Troy Montero.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160186" align="aligncenter" width="1703"] Kieza Garra and Jeanette Ong.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160188" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] (FROM left) SSI Group Inc. president Anton Huang, Maricel and Donny Pangilinan, Nikki Huang, Ella and Anthony Pangilinan.PHOTOGRAPHS courtesy of Polo Ralph Lauren[/caption] Santos spoke to Daily Tribune at the store’s recent opening. “We have the different collections here,” he said. Aside from its signature Polo Shirt, which has been around since 1972, Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s line presents several collections to check out in Spring/Summer 2023. There’s the timeless collection called Heritage Icons, as inspired by The Hamptons’ preppy fashion. Another one, The Curator, is a refined sportswear merged with Manhattan’s Gallery tastemakers’ sophisticated gallery look. The Summit collection reinvigorates the Active line with archival styles and technical performance, while the Key West line displays a relaxed island lifestyle. Lastly, a diverse collection of vibrant seasonal fashion is showcased in the South America range. It suits perfectly in warm weather and blends well with exotic adventure vibes. Polo Ralph Lauren Women’s line, on the other hand, has a Spring/Summer 2023 collection that covers Mediterranean, California Modern and Laurel Canyon themes of undeniably timeless and classic style. Likewise not to be missed is the Polo ID collection, which showcases handbags, footwear and other leather goods that embody elegance and comfort. Star-studded affair The opening of the Greenbelt branch (the first at Shangri-La mall and soon at Rustan’s Makati and Solaire), was attended by some of the notable celebrities in the fields of fashion, beauty pageants and show business. They looked cool, chic and comfortable in Polo Ralph Lauren fashion pieces. Actor Maricel Laxa turned up with her husband Anthony Pangilinan, a media practitioner and management consultant, along with their daughter Ella Pangilinan and, later on, with their son, matinee idol Donny Pangilinan. “I want something comfortable and easy to carry. I don’t want anything elaborate. I’m a little bit stylish now because I have kids who are more exposed to fashion.” Aubrey Miles, also an actress and entrepreneur, came at the event with her husband and fellow celebrity Troy Montero. She had this to say on dressing up: “As long as it looks good on me and it flatters my body, I go for that. I’m more stylish when I go out alone. When I’m with Troy, I’m more on the sexy side. With our kids, just a long dress with pockets or with a sling bag.” For his part, Montero said, “I just always want to be comfortable. I think my fashion sense changed over the years. I’m definitely more into comfort than anything else. Once you feel good and comfortable, you can be confident walking around. Nothing makes you more uncomfortable and less confident if it’s not fitted. I like to keep up with the trends and things like that. Like today, I’m wearing this Polo shirt, and I kinda went for the one with a little bit non-traditional.” More actors talked to us about their fashion sense. Max Collins described her fashion sense as “laidback chic.” She explained, “I always wear something that I can move in, but at the same time it’s classic and simple. I love neutral colors as well.” Sofia Andres said she goes for “classic, simple and chic at the same time,” even when she's with her three-year-old daughter. “I only wear pants, shirts, sometimes a coat, blazer, that’s it. That looks amazing.” Young star Kyline Alcantara admitted letting her moods dictate her fashion choices. “Sometimes I’m into street style. Sometimes I’m into classy, simple. It really depends on my mood. I feel that’s what fashion is. It’s art also, how you describe yourself, what makes you feel confident.” Celeste Cortesi, who was crowned Miss Universe Philippines in 2022, declared, “I like wearing anything, depends on where I go. I just want to be comfortable and chic at the same time.” Fashion model-turned-actress and host Phoemela Baranda noted that having a baby (her second in 20 years) has changed her body type and she works around that. “I try to look whatever suits my body type now and I’m comfortable with. So, I’m comfortable with long dresses. But of course a little updated naman. I update with accessories or a body.” Myrza Sison, former top model and now a speaker, host, journalist and certified executive coach had this to say about her fashion sense: “Minimal effort for maximum impact. “So I believe in style, rather than fashion, and I think the more you know yourself, the more you can have personal style. Otherwise, you’re just gonna try every trend and you won’t really present a strong image to the world.” The post Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

A travel blogger’s tips on how to avoid having to pay airlines excess baggage fees have gone viral on social media. Chelsea Dickenson posted on her TikTok account, “Cheap Holiday Expert,” a video clip showing her transferring personal effects from her carry-on bag to the pockets of a fishing vest she was wearing before boarding her flight. Dickenson made it to her flight with no issues, she said, according to The Hill. Others took the cue from Dickenson with the same result. “The best thing about this tip is that it’s pretty legit,” Dickenson wrote of the fishing vest hack on her site, The Hill reported. “There’s absolutely nothing that says you can’t use your coat or jacket in this way and the pockets are really handy at sectioning things off.” Dickenson also tried stuffing things in a neck pillow and an extra-large bra, which also worked as she made it through the terminal boarding gate. A bag that guarantees flyers will be spared from paying for excess luggage is the one created by designer MSCHF based in Brooklyn, New York. A BBC report describes the “purse” as made of photopolymer resin and created using a 3D printer. You can be sure baggage checkers won’t spot the teeny-weeny bag which is the size of a grain of salt. Of course, nothing will fit inside it, that is if its owner can even see it with the naked eye. Anyway, the handbag is not practical for ordinary travelers because not only is it too tiny, but it’s also too pricey. The bag was bought at an auction for $63,750, according to BBC. In any case, the buyer of the expensive miniature bag will be able to see it as it came with a regular-size digital microscope. That bulky accessory, however, may cost an extra baggage fee. Slovenia celebrates UNESCO recognition for renowned Lipizzan horses
People watched in awe as the world-renowned Lipizzan horses put on a dazzling show this month in the village of Lipica in the small Alpine state of Slovenia. The home of one of the world's most distinguished horse breeds -- and seven countries in the region that once were part of the Habsburg Empire -- have reason to celebrate. Their shared tradition of Lipizzan breeding recently made UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The noble Lipizzans, also known as Lipizzaners, are descendants of long stallion lines crossing Spanish, Arabic and Berber horses and were first bred by the Habsburg court in the 16th century. They are famous for their "airs above the ground" classical dressage jumps -- a series of difficult movements requiring strength and precision, in which the horse's feet leave the ground. This rare breed -- featuring white hair but grey skin -- is also famed as a carriage horse. The name derives from tiny Lipica, nestled among Slovenia's verdant hills and lush forests. The picturesque village is home to one of the world's oldest stud farms, which dates back to 1580 and currently stables more than 400 blue-blooded horses. "This is the Lipizzan's home," said Slovenian culture minister Asta Vrecko, ahead of the UNESCO ceremony last weekend. The event was attended by the eight countries that jointly applied for recognition of their shared breeding heritage -- Austria, Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. For a moment, time stood still as horses and riders from the eight nations performed their dressage and driving exhibition. "They are phenomenal animals. The way that they've been trained and the level of skill of the riders is incredible," said 42-year-old horse farm owner Laura Highlander, who travelled all the way from the United States to see the horses. "I was super excited to be able to come... and see them in their training," she added after visiting the Lipica stud farm. Equine ballet Dark at birth, the Lipizzan horses' coat turns white by the time they are about four years old, which is also when their demanding training starts and the most promising stallions are selected. "Lipizzans can have a strong temperament. They are usually serene, sometimes shy. They are kind and it is up to us to recognize the quality of each horse," Miro Dragic, head of the Lipica stud farm riders' team, told AFP. If health permits, these athletic equine stars, can be worth up to several hundred thousand euros (dollars) each, and can remain active well into their mid-20s. Only the best stallions will be trained in the elitist "haute ecole" of classical dressage to eventually master an equine ballet of cantering, caprioles and pirouettes. The riders, who sport tailcoats and Napoleonic bicorne hats, must also be at the top of their game to get the best from their sensitive partners. "With horses it's like with people. There are many external elements -- weather included -- that can affect them," stableman Amadej Cej told AFP while grooming one of his elegant stallions. It's stablemen like Cej who spend quality time with these beautiful creatures, attending to their every need "from birth until their end".
