It’s all in the head

Pia Wurtzbach can act---and, given the right material and motivation, she can do it well. Her sophomore starrer proves that, while still rough around the edges, hers is a talent that's ripe for the picking. She acquits herself well beside her equally proficient but more experienced leading man. This much is obvious in Cathy Garcia-Molina's "My Perfect You," where the 2015 Miss Universe winner is tasked to make her offbeat rom-com's well-meaning but "insanely" implausible twist palatable. In the film, Gerald Anderson plays graphic designer Burn Toledo, who's desperately running away from a life that has had too many curved balls thrown its way. His girlfriend bre...Keep on reading: It’s all in the head.....»»

Philippines aims for top-three finish in 2019 SEA Games

After a very successful stint in the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia which saw the Philippines finish 19th out of 46 participating nations, the country aims to finish at least third when the 30th South East Asian Games roll along in the archipelago next year.  In the previous edition held in Kuala Lumpur last year, the Philippines finished sixth out of 11 nations, ending the Games with a 24 golds, 33 silver and 64 bronzes in the medal count. With the country hosting for the first time since the top overall finish in Manila back in 2005, Philippine Olympic Committee President Ricky Vargas aims to replicate the successful hosting of the events 13 years prior. "I hope it all works out. To perform well. Our goal is to host well. Our goal is to be in the Top 3," Vargas said in between PBA games on Sunday.  Vargas also added that Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who is also the SEA Games organizing committee chairman, had already presented the budget proposal to Congress for appropriation in the 2019 National Budget. With that said, all participating countries will meet again at Clark in Pampanga, which will be the center of the Games, this November to see the progress of the venues there, and possibly add an event, particularly skateboarding to the Games. "We'll surprise you in skateboard. There are two other skateboard artists we're looking at that will really play the game. So we are really blessed with skateboard."   __   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary. .....»»

ONE Championship: Rene Catalan still won t fight a fellow Filipino, not even for a championship

Veteran martial artist and ONE Championship strawweight contender Rene Catalan is standing his ground with regards to his statement about not wanting to fight a fellow Filipino.  In an interview with ONE Championship back in August, the former Asian Games Gold Medalist in Wushu stated that he'd rather not fight a fellow Filipino, regardless of the stakes.  Back then, Catalan and fellow pinoy strawweight contender Joshua Pacio were thought to be on a collision course, with both having put together respective winning streaks.  "I’d rather not face a fellow Filipino.” said Catalan. “Since 2003, I’ve been representing for the Philippines, and until now, I try to avoid having to compete against one of my countrymen.”  Both Catalan and Pacio were coming off impressive wins in Manila, but it was Pacio who was rewared the opportunity for the championship. The Team Lakay strawweight standout will challenge reigning ONE Championship Strawweight World Champion Yoshitaka Naito at ONE: Conquest of Heroes in Jakarta, Indonesia.  When asked about the possiblity of having to face Pacio with a world title on the line, Catalan's answer didn't change.  "Ibibigay ko na siguro kay Joshua 'yun," the 39-year old said. "Kung manalo siya, maraming foreigner na mag-hahabol sa kanya at sa belt. Andiyan si Hayato Suzuki, si Alex Silva, marami."  Catalan is also in Jakarta, cornering prized pupil Jomary Torres as she takes on Indonesia's own Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol.  "Naniniwala ako na may time din ako." he added.  Catalan even hinted at playing gatekeeper for Pacio, should the Baguio-based fighter pull off a victory on Saturday night.  "Pwedeng ako yung kalabanin nung mga ibang challenger, pero hindi talaga natin kakalabanin yung kababayan natin."  "Yung kapwa natin Pilipino, tutulungan dapat natin." he added.  Catalan was slated to meet Japanese submission specialist Hayato Suzuki at ONE's return to Bangkok in October, but had to pull out due to an ankle injury.  Taking Catalan's place against Suzuki will be his younger brother Robin.  Before anything else of course, Pacio will have to take care of business against Naito.  Saturday's main event will be a rematch of their 2016 title bout which saw Naito defeat Pacio in the third round via submission.    Catch ONE Championship: Conquest of Heroes on Saturday, September 22nd at 10:30 PM LIVE on ABS-CBN S+A channel 23! .....»»

PHI paddlers capture two gold medals in world championship

GAINESVILLE, Georgia --- The Philippines quickly snatched two gold medals in record-setting fashion during the opener of the prestigious 2018 ICF World Dragon Boat Championships at the Lake Lanier Olympic Park here. The national paddlers from the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat Federation ruled the 10-seater senior mixed 500-meter event on Thursday (Friday Manila time), defeating race favorites Hungary and host United States by a significant margin. With drummer Patricia Bustamante and steerer Maribeth Caranto leading the way, the Filipinos clocked two minutes, 7.5 seconds to improve on their bronze-medal finish in the same event during the 2016 world championships in Moscow, Russia. Arriving second were the Hungarians, who timed 2:11.36 in a narrow finish to nip the Americans (2:11.86) for the silver medal in the biennial meet featuring the best 16 countries in the world of dragonboat racing. “They really wanted to prove something out there and they never lost focus despite the strong opposition,” said PCKDF president Jonne Go. The Filipinos struck a second gold medal just a few hours apart after dominating the 20-seater senior mixed 500m race again at the expense of Hungary and the Czech Republic.  They timed 1:52.58, impressively beating their previous race-winning clocking by three seconds two years ago in Moscow. The Hungarians clocked 1:55.09 and the Czech Republic placed third (1:55.14). “We never doubted the team’s ability to win. Once again, they showed the world that we Filipinos are world-class in this sport,” said Go For Gold’s Jeremy Go, who helped bankroll the participation of the PCKDF with the Philippine Sports Commission. It was a rejuvenating feeling for the Pinoy paddlers after they went home without a medal in the recent Asian Games in Indonesia where the organizers veered away from international standards by using shorter but heavier boats. Head coach Len Escollante said the Philippines is on track to capture a third gold medal on Saturday when the national paddlers, led by Hermie Macaranas and Ojay Fuentes, compete in the 10-seater men’s 200 finals. Joining them again are Mark Frias, Reymart Nevado, John Paul Selencio and Oliver Manaig. Women paddlers Raquel Almencion, Rosalyn Esguerra, Rhea Rhoa and Christine Talledo completed the cast in the small boat mixed category along with Bustamante and Caranto......»»
