Christmas tree lighting kicks off holiday season at Peninsula Manila
Christmas Season 2023 officially kicked off on 6 October at The Peninsula Manila hotel in Makati City with the lighting of its 45-foot Christmas tree. The highly anticipated annual tradition that dates back in 1976 was held at the hotel’s famous The Lobby that has been festively spruced up for the most wonderful time of the year. The Peninsula Manila’s general manager Masahisa Oba led the ceremony, which aims to spread the message of hope and peace. He was joined by the children from Virlanie Foundation. “This will be my fifth Christmas in Manila,” Oba said in as statement, “but the buzz of excitement in the city, with its holiday parties and festive gatherings, never fades.” Before and after the formal Christmas tree lighting ceremony, a concert took place featuring the Lighter Side Movement Orchestra and The Peninsula Strings. A new generation of viewers will experience the 2004 classic chick flick 13 Going on 30 in a different light — as a musical adaptation. According to Variety, Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, the film’s original writers, will be in charge of the musical adaptation, while Andy Fickman will direct the show. “When we poured our middle school pain into the movie 13 Going on 30, we never quite imagined it would stick around to this day as a rom-com parents show their kids, a Halloween costume, a scene in an Ariana Grande music video and a teen sleepover staple. Now we’re thrilled to be bringing our pain across the pond with 13 Going on 30 The Musical,” said Goldsmith and Yuspa, who are thrilled to reinvent the story for the London stage. First announced in 2016, the show will premiere in the summer of 2024. The coming-of-age film revolves around the story of a 13-year-old girl named Jenna Rink, an average teenager who wishes to fit in with the popular crowd. After her 13th birthday party ends in a disaster, a disappointed Jenna prays to be a confident 30 years old, and her wish comes true. She wakes up 17 years into the future and discovers she is now a 30-year-old successful magazine editor with an expensive apartment and a fabulous life she didn’t see coming her way. Jennifer Garner played the iconic role of Jenna Rink. The 2004 romantic comedy film also starred Christa B. Allen, Mark Ruffalo, Brie Larson, Judy Green and more. The cast and details of the musical are yet to be announced, but with the source film’s cult classic status, it’s sure to generate major buzz among London theatergoers. Taylor Swift spotted as rumored beau Kelce’s Chiefs play NY Jets
Taylor Swift has remained mum on her rumored relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce, but the pop superstar was on hand again Sunday as Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs took on the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium outside the Big Apple. The 33-year-old "Lavender Haze" singer was spotted, clad in crystal-studded denim shorts and a long-sleeved black shirt, entering the building with actors Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Jackman. She was soon ensconced in a luxury suite, with one social media poster getting a cellphone video of her playfully sticking out her tongue as she was filmed. InStyle reported Swift had been seen dining in New York with Brittany Mahomes, wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the night before the game. Swift sparked a fan frenzy -- among NFL watchers and her own legion of "Swifties" -- when she attended the Chiefs' home game against the Chicago Bears last weekend, sitting in a luxury box alongside Kelce's mother, Donna. The 12-time Grammy winner, sporting a red and white Chiefs jacket, was treated to a 41-10 Chiefs romp and cheered wildly when Kelce, a two-time Super Bowl winner and one of the top tight ends in the league, caught a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Kelce himself said in his New Heights podcast on Wednesday that he "sure as hell enjoyed" the weekend. "Shout out to Taylor for pulling up. That was pretty ballsy," said Kelce, who was cagey about the exact nature of their relationship. "I know I brought all this attention to me," the podcast regular said. "I want to respect both of our lives." Swift's interest, however, has made Kelce the focus of a whole new set of fans. After a report Tuesday citing merchandise company Fanatics that his jersey sales had climbed more than 400 percent, Kelce said: "Sounds like the Swifties are also part of Chiefs Kingdom." The NFL, no strangers to celebrity spectacle, was quick to the buzz brought by Swift, posting plenty of pictures of Swift and friends as they enjoyed the Chiefs-Jets Game, which occupied the coveted "Sunday Night Football" slot. Broadcaster NBC was also on the bandwagon, airing a Swift-themed ad for the game that used Swift's hit song "Welcome to New York." Fans posting on social media platform X were poking fun at NBC early in the game for the numerous shots of Swift and friends watching the game. Quo Vadis Gilas?
Over the past week, basketball crazy FIBA co-host Philippines has been the mecca for world basketball. Hordes of foreign basketball fans eager to support their teams have trooped to our country, and along with thousands of local fans, including yours truly, have endured the hardships of hours long traffic, bewildering weather of humidity, heat and massive rainfall melding intermittently all within the day enroute to the venues, just to witness live the World Cup’s top hoopsters. Despite what I felt were atrociously expensive tickets for the lower box sections, being an incorrigible basketball fanatic, I just felt that I could not pass up the chance to be part of the once in a lifetime World Cup experience, particularly since I would be in the company of family friends, businessman basketball-sportscaster Dominic Uy who shared his insightful off-court commentaries and who was responsible for getting us some great seats, my erstwhile golfing partner Cookie la’O who had partnered with me decades back to bag the prestigious Mango Tee Tournament championship in Alabang, and my son-in-law, noted New Balance shoe designer Gabe la’O, who flew all the way from New Hampshire to watch some top-notch games. Never mind that they are all as La Salle Green as can be but their youthful energies in cheering their hearts out for every basket, block, steal and mad breakaway was infectious. I watched the US-Greece and Gilas-Italy games live and the experience did not disappoint. The highlights of those games in consonance with the tremendous roars of the fans will be replayed in my memory bank over and over again for a long time to come. But, of course, like all true-blue basketball aficionados, recounting and analyzing the wows of a won game and the what-ifs of a heartbreaker and the future of Gilas is par for the course. So here goes. Despite the four heartbreaking defeats to the Dominican Republic, Angola, Italy and South Sudan, the last game of Gilas winning against the undisputed Asian champion, China, has given us a slight glimmer of hope, again, to have a chance to make it to Paris next year. Although the win was masterfully achieved as a team effort, undoubtedly it was Jordan Clarkson who practically carried Gilas on his shoulders with his hot 3-point shooting in the third quarter. Even China’s coach Sasha Dordevic and NBA star Li Kaier of the Minneapolis Timberwolves pointed to Clarkson as the main reason for their never-before lopsided loss to Gilas. Because of this win, Gilas is ranked 24th out of the 32 participating countries, enough to allow us to participate in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and so the buzz over Gilas’ chances continues. What changes are needed? As far as the team composition is concerned, unless there are injuries, I believe the current line-up is as good as it can get. All are unquestionably standouts. On the other hand, as far as the coaching leadership is concerned, Chot Reyes already declared immediately after the win over China that he is stepping down because the incessant social media abuse from his critics has been “brutal” for him and his family. Kudos to Chot for his service to the country and for making this move rightly expected of any leader who has not delivered on the goals. The options, however, are limited. And worse, there is an extremely short timeline to make the choice because the Asian Games starts on 23 September. Tab Baldwin of course is the popular clamor, but the UAAP season begins as well this September and I don’t think he will leave the Blue Eagles coachless. Also it seems that there could be some pushback from certain SBA and PBA quarters who might not be too keen on Tab’s up front in your face style. Tim Cone is my own bet because not only is he an equally great coach but also for continuity since he is already in the Gilas coaching staff. Regardless of the choice, however, the problem of conflicting schedules of the players with their home teams will continue to be an obstacle to building a Gilas team that needs to be properly honed with significant playing time together. PBA and SBP will have to somehow firmly reach an understanding, otherwise Gilas fans will have to face up to the reality of more heartbreaks. Quo Vadis Gilas? Until next week… OBF! The cast of the upcoming iWantTFC series Senior High stole the spotlight in Sunday’s episode of ASAP Natin ‘To. Andrea Brillantes and Kyle Echarri choreographed a rousing dance routine for the group to the tune of SB19’s number-one single, “Bazinga.” The youth-oriented show boasts a constellation of fresh talents that are set to become the stars of tomorrow. Gilas poised to make a stand
About a week from now, the FIBA Basketball World Cup, one of the most anticipated sporting events on the global stage, is set to unfold to captivate basketball fans around the world. As teams prepare to showcase their skills and compete for the coveted title, the Philippine national basketball team, known as “Gilas Pilipinas,” has been generating significant buzz and raising hopes among its passionate fan base. With a rich basketball history and a growing pool of talented players, the Philippines is poised to make a statement in the upcoming tournament it is co-hosting with Japan and Indonesia. The Philippines has a deep-rooted love for basketball, often referred to as the national sport. The passion for the game runs through the veins of Filipino enthusiasts, making every international competition a matter of immense national pride. Although the country has faced challenges in recent FIBA World Cup editions, the fervent support of the fans and the dedication of the players and coaching staff continue to fuel hopes for a successful campaign this time around. Gilas Pilipinas has faced strong opposition in the past, often contending against teams boasting of NBA-level talent and sophisticated basketball programs. Despite these challenges, the Philippine team exhibited remarkable resilience, showcasing flashes of brilliance that demonstrated its potential on the world stage. In 2014, the country snapped 36 years of futility and earned a ticket to the FIBA World Cup in Spain, capped by a historic win over Senegal that meant all the world to Filipino fans. The upcoming FIBA World Cup presents another opportunity for Gilas Pilipinas to further evolve and make a lasting impression, with the potential to upset more established basketball powerhouses. One key factor contributing to the optimism surrounding the Philippine team is the growing talent pool of Filipino basketball players. The Philippines has produced numerous skilled athletes who have excelled in various basketball leagues both domestically and internationally. Led by Fil-Am Jordan Clarkson, 7-foot-3 Kai Sotto, and World Cup veterans Junmar Fajardo and Japeth Aguilar, the team boasts of skilled players with height, a big factor in the international circuit. Along with a slew of talented players, many of whom honed their skills in collegiate leagues and professional basketball circuits, many think that they will give the opposition a run for their money. Their experience, combined with their familiarity with high-level competition, positions the team to perform at their best during the World Cup. The Philippine basketball community is also benefiting from the increasing support and investment in grassroots basketball development. Basketball courts dot the Philippine landscape, serving as breeding grounds for young talents who aspire to don the national team’s jersey someday. The Philippine Basketball Association continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing homegrown talents, with initiatives aimed at fostering youth basketball and grassroots programs. While optimism is running high, it’s essential to acknowledge the fierce competition that awaits Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA World Cup. Teams from traditional basketball powerhouses, such as the United States, Spain, and France, will be formidable opponents. These teams boast exceptional talent, extensive experience, and robust basketball infrastructure that has consistently propelled them to the upper echelons of international basketball. To increase its chances of success, Gilas Pilipinas must focus on meticulous preparation, effective strategies, and a strong team spirit. The coaching staff, led by Chot Reyes, Tim Cone and Jong Uichico, will play a crucial role in devising game plans that will capitalize on the team’s strengths and exploit opponents’ weaknesses. In all, the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup presents an exciting opportunity for Gilas Pilipinas to showcase its skills, passion, and resilience on the global stage. While challenges abound, the spirit of competition, national pride and the love of the game will undoubtedly drive the team to give its all and leave an indelible mark on the world of basketball. Pretty in pink: ‘Barbie’ marketing blitz hits fever pitch
Hollywood A-listers have been walking red carpets in hot pink, glitter is back, and companies from The Gap to Burger King are doing rose-colored collaborations: "Barbie" mania is everywhere as the hotly anticipated film hits theaters worldwide. Toy maker Mattel, who first unveiled the iconic doll in 1959, has reached about 100 licensing agreements for everything from roller skates to toothbrushes in connection to director Greta Gerwig's summer flick. Of course, Barbie is big in the beauty world too -- lipsticks, blushes and mirrors all bear the famous logo. "In the 30 years that I have been tracking and analyzing box offices and trends, I've never quite seen anything like this before," said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore. "Barbie is tailor-made for marketing," he said. "It's perfect because Barbie is a toy, it's already a product, and beyond that, it's a lifestyle and a color." The movie, which stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as boyfriend Ken, has been hyped as one of the biggest blockbusters of the season, with numerous premieres held around the globe ahead of Friday's debut in US theaters. Of course, that promotion blitz has been curtailed at the 11th hour, with Hollywood actors now on strike over pay and other conditions. But the list of corporate partners is sure to keep the buzz going. Microsoft, Forever 21, Ulta Beauty, Hot Wheels, Chevrolet and even Progressive insurance are among the companies looking to cash in on Barbie mania. The influential color company Pantone even has a shade to match the zeitgeist: 219C is officially Barbie Pink. Mattel has even reached a deal with rival toy giant Hasbro, which will release a Barbie version of the classic board game Monopoly in the fall. In exchange, Mattel will showcase "Transformers" on its Uno card game in connection with a Hasbro film release. 'Irresistible' Robbie has embraced Barbiecore fashion at premieres around the world, recreating some of the doll's most iconic looks, but the Barbie lifestyle trend is also full steam ahead Airbnb is offering up a stay at Barbie's "Malibu DreamHouse" for two nights in connection with the film's debut. "Placed perfectly above the beach with panoramic views, this life-size toy pink mansion is a dream come true!" reads the listing. Singer John Legend and his model wife Chrissy Teigen took the plunge, posting a series of pictures on Instagram of their stay at the hot pink property. The most ubiquitous shade of pink used on the Warner Bros film's set, a retro bubblegum hue made by Rosco, was used in such great quantities that the shoot has been blamed for a global shortage. "It's just become a very irresistible proposition," said Dergarabedian, crediting both Warner Bros and Mattel with ensuring the buzz had staying power. Dergarabedian expects a strong opening weekend for Barbie, with around $75 million in North American ticket sales. 'Barbenheimer' The film is opening in parallel with another big Hollywood entry, the Christopher Nolan-directed "Oppenheimer," a biopic about the father of the atomic bomb. The unlikely face-off between the dark historical thriller and a fuchsia-tinted romp about a doll has created online buzz about a phenomenon dubbed "Barbenheimer." Dergarabedian said the coincidental timing of the openings had contributed to "unprecedented" fodder about the films on social media and beyond. Both movies are opening on the heels of another big-screen blockbuster, "Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning Part One," which led the domestic box office last weekend. A starry soundtrack includes tracks from Dua Lipa (who also appears in the film), Lizzo, and Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, who recorded a cover of "Barbie Girl," a 1997 hit by Danish-Norwegian band Aqua. The original recording actually prompted a lengthy but unsuccessful trademark lawsuit by Mattel. The company subsequently embraced the song. The movie's arrival has also not been without controversy. Barbie has been banned in Vietnam over a scene with a fictitious world map criticized for allegedly showing China's claims in the disputed South China Sea. The Philippines allowed the film to be shown -- but asked that the map be blurred. The post Pretty in pink: ‘Barbie’ marketing blitz hits fever pitch appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Moment of legacy’:Pinoy producers making B’way history with ‘Here Lies Love’
[caption id="attachment_157582" align="aligncenter" width="546"] Don Michael Mendoza and Georgina Pazcoguin.GIRLIE Rodis[/caption] [caption id="attachment_157584" align="aligncenter" width="193"] Giselle Tongi[/caption] [caption id="attachment_157583" align="aligncenter" width="351"] Adam Handyman, Bobby Garcia,[/caption] Here Lies Love, the Broadway musical about former First Lady Imelda Marcos and the People Power Revolution, is not only the first Broadway production to have a cast composed entirely of Filipinos. It is also the first to have so many Filipinos on its producing team. The latest HLL Pinoy producers are Black Eyed Peas singer Apl.de.Ap and DJ CherishTheLuv. They are part of a distinguished group that includes celebrated performers, renowned artists and accomplished advocates who are of Filipino blood and are proud to be part of the innovative show. Named as producers are Hal Luftig, Patrick Catullo, Diana DiMenna and Plate Spinner Productions, Clint Ramos, and Jose Antonio Vargas, with Aaron Lustbader as executive producer. They are joined by Lea Salonga (who is in the cast), H.E.R., Jo Koy, Bobby Garcia, Giselle “G” Töngi, Celia Kaleialoha Kenney, Girlie Rodis, Miranda Gohh, Rob Laqui, Georgina Pazcoguin, Don Michael H. Mendoza, Adam Hyndman, Yasuhiro Kawana, Triptyk Studios, Shira Friedman, James L. Nederlander, Kevin Connor, Patrick Trettenero, Elizabeth Armstrong, Cathy Dantchik, Wendy Federman/Suzzane Niedland, Luke Katler/Ryan Solomon, Laura Ivey/Janet Brenner and Hunter Arnold/TBD Theatricals. David Byrne, co-founder of the ‘80s New Wave group Talking Heads and the brains behind the concept and music of HLL, said to The Washington Post’s Gina Apostol that this was what he intended. The Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician explained, “I wanted producers who understand what it means, not just to them personally but to the Filipino community.” ‘Phenomenal musical’ Getting the producers on board was not difficult because of HLL’s history. In 2013, HLL premiered off-Broadway at New York City’s The Public Theater where it played until 2015. It also had runs at London’s National Royal Theatre from 2014 to 2015, and at the Seattle Repertory Theater in 2017. Tony Award-winning producer Adam Hyndman was among the audience of HLL’s off-Broadway debut. “I was so impacted that I saw it three times and brought everyone I knew!” he recalled. When he was invited to bring the project to the world’s most famous theater circuit — Adam had produced the Broadway musicals Aladdin, Once On This Island, Hadestown and The Inheritance — his response was immediate: “I jumped on board because I knew HLL would be more than just another show, but rather a moment of legacy.” G Töngi, who had made a name for herself as an actress/host/VJ in the Philippines in the 1990s, was likewise fired up when she witnessed HLL at Seattle Repertory. “I walked away from that experience feeling so seen,” she said. The musical brought her back to 1986 when she, as a child, marched in the streets outside Malacañang with her mother. Atlantis Productions founder Bobby Garcia, who mounted the Philippine productions of Rent and Angels in America, has been involved with HLL since 2014, when it premiered at London’s National Theater. Bobby said, “(Director) Alex Timbers kept me in the loop of potential productions. Patrick Catullo and Clint Ramos approached me about joining the team as co-producer and talked to me about how the show would have a revolving door of Filipino artists from Manila to play Aurora Aquino (the mother of Ninoy Aquino).” The opportunity was simply too good to pass up, said Garcia. “As an advocate of Filipino talent, I wanted to be part of bringing this phenomenal musical to the Broadway stage and opening the door for talent from the Philippines to cross the ocean and make their Broadway debuts.” Breaking ground Garcia’s friend, veteran talent manager and stage and film producer Girlie Rodis, certainly understands what he meant. “Whether you’re someone on stage or someone working behind the scenes, the big break doesn’t come often,” said Rodis. “So when Bobby talked to me in 2021 about joining him as co-producer, no questions asked. More than the prospect of giving breaks to our talented Filipino artists, it’s the chance to carve a legacy that made me tell Bobby, ‘Count me in!’ Who would have thought that a Broadway musical production would have an all-Filipino cast and depict the history of the Philippines? Now it’s finally happening.” HLL’s Broadway debut is set to break ground in American media and performing arts. “This visibility of Filipino performers in leading roles on Broadway just fills my heart,” said Georgina Pazcoguin, New York City Ballet’s first Asian-American female soloist and co-founder of the diversity initiative Final Bow for Yellowface. For actor and stage/TV/new media producer Don Michael H. Mendoza, the impact will definitely be long-term. “Like Hamilton does for actors of color, Here Lies Love will provide employment to countless Filipino performers, musicians and production staff for many years to come. Moreover, it will teach the audience about a people that was always in front of them for decades, but playing other ethnicities. Now it’s our turn to be seen and loved by the audiences for who we are as Filipinos. Not as anyone else.” Bayanihan spirit The bayanihan spirit, or cooperative spirit that Pinoys are known for, is very present among the HLL producers. A number of them are based outside of New York and a few — like Rodis — are outside the US. But thanks to technology and fueled by a united passion, they have formed a strong bond and have achieved their tasks outstandingly. “Being a Here Lies Love co-producer has, at long last, connected me with my culture in a way I’ve been craving. For the first time ever I’m surrounded by co-workers who share a part of my identity,“ said Pazcoguin. Rodis added, “Collaborating with this incredible group of Filipino co-producers has already given me so much. Tony award-winning designer Clint Ramos and producer Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, have been supportive and generous. It’s a blessing to be in this company.” A few days before Here Lies Love opens on Broadway, the producers already feel ecstatic. “We are excited that there is so much enthusiasm both in the Broadway and Filipino and Fil-Am communities to see HLL,” said New York-based creative producer Rob Laqui. “One of our jobs as producers is to translate this buzz to getting people to the theater so HLL will have a long and successful run… We are confident and have faith in our process, and in the incredible team assembled, that HLL will be the gold standard for what Broadway can be.” The post ‘Moment of legacy’:Pinoy producers making B’way history with ‘Here Lies Love’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Angry fans to Star Magic: ‘Janella deserves better’
Janella Salvador has sent the Twitter community into a frenzy after she penned a short, cryptic post that fans said appeared to be about the latest Star Magic catalogue. Ah k. Noted,” Salvador wrote in a Twitter post. While the actress didn’t provide any further explanation or context, her message quickly captured the attention and curiosity of her followers. Netizens immediately began speculating about the possible meaning of Salvador’s tweet. Many suspected that she was referring to the latest catalogue of Star Magic — the talent management arm of ABS-CBN Corporation — where Salvador’s photo is conspicuously absent on the cover despite the actress having starred in Mars Ravelo’s Darna, one of ABS-CBN’s most prominent projects last year. The hashtag #Janella DeservesBetter began trending on Twitter, with fans expressing their support for the actress. One fan tweeted, “We love you @superjanella, and everybody knows you are a superstar in your own right. Nobody can change that.” “We love you @superjanella. You’re an A-lister . You deserve better,” another fan said. The buzz surrounding Salvador’s tweet has come alongside rumors of a possible collaboration between her and Win Metawin, a well-known Thai actor. Fans have scoured social media for any clues or information regarding this rumored collaboration, following a video clip on 22 June from Win’s exclusive interview event for Lazada x Shiseido, hosted by Tamagodji, where Win hinted that he was working on a new project with a non-Thai celebrity, causing excitement among Salvador’s supporters. Beyond her professional endeavors, Janella is also known for being a loving mother to her baby boy named Jude. The actress and his ex-boyfriend Markus Paterson introduced Jude to the public via a YouTube vlog in January 2021. Jude was born in the UK in October 2020. Barbie movie opens to buzzy raves
If the review board needed any more convincing then perhaps the buzzy raves on social media after its initial release in the US will push them to decide to show it. The MTRCB has yet to decide if they will ban the Barbie movie over the 9-dash line map shown in a scene, but cineastes are hoping that the anticipation over this movie and Greta Gerwig’s reputation as a director of caliber, and this current buzz will have Philippine audiences seeing this on the big screen on its intended release. Advocating recovery, growth of Phl tourism
The recent efforts of the Department of Tourism or DoT clearly reflect the agency’s commitment to pushing the recovery of the industry. Through numerous travel fairs aimed at reawakening the wanderlust within the citizenry, people are again being enticed to travel and temporarily escape the humdrum of life, especially after the health and safety protocols were eased. Among the DoT’s newest initiatives is the launch of its new slogan, “Love the Philippines,” as part of the department’s 50th-anniversary celebration. “The campaign Love the Philippines is not a mere branding campaign, but rather a call to action to every Filipino citizen to remember the beauty of our country, to honor our past, and to look forward to the future armed with the virtues, values of being a Filipino,” Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said during the launch. The decision to finally retire the 11-year-old “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” slogan seemed to have sprung from the idea that the Philippines has so much more to offer beyond fun. Tourists, be they local or foreign, are in for an amazing culinary experience with the mouth-watering food found all over the country. Apart from this, we also have a very vibrant culture and rich history that are definitely worth sharing. Sparking significant buzz, the new slogan instantly became a trending topic on social media and other platforms after its unveiling. The volume of diverse reactions, opinions, and engagements regarding the new slogan demonstrated the citizenry’s passion for or against it. While some were very welcoming of the new slogan and have their sights set on using it as an official hashtag in their upcoming domestic travels, others didn’t find it catchy and enthusiastic enough, viewing it more as a command, written in the imperative form, rather than a call to action. Public Relations Society of the Philippines or PRSP president Harold Geronimo is one of the more neutral voices amid the hubbub. Sharing his insight as a PR practitioner, although the advertising slogan has a commanding tone at face value, he said it can be used for storytelling and sharing experiences that lead to expressing one’s affection for the country. Through the new slogan, one can create an impactful narrative that encapsulates reasons why we should love the Philippines. On the other hand, renowned Filipino broadcast journalist Howie Severino pointed out how the addition of a simple comma can transform the slogan into a declaration of love from the Philippines to the rest of the world. “Love, the Philippines” – there is a noticeable shift in perspective that mirrors hospitality, a cultural trait that the country is globally known and admired for. While the new slogan has been the center of everyone’s attention, we should all be reminded that the true recovery and success of the tourism industry lies heavily in the presence of tangible solutions. The government should maintain its focus on improving the infrastructure, operating an effective and reliable transportation system, and maintaining efficient airport operations. Once these are achieved, we can expect that local and foreign tourists alike will have a pleasant experience exploring and, perhaps, falling in love with the Philippines. Lest we forget, tourism was among the industries that hit rock bottom during the pandemic. It is therefore imperative that the government’s advertising efforts and infrastructure investments are aligned so the DoT can successfully attain a version of the Philippines that will not only truly captivate tourists, but also leave a lasting impression on the world. Like a phoenix emerging from ashes, the Philippines’ tourism industry aims to once again ascend to great heights with its new slogan as its wings — serving as a powerful invitation for tourists to experience the Philippines and cultivate a personal connection that will keep them coming back. Stronger support for Philippine folk music, dances
I just returned from a week in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where I represented the Philippines as a juror at Asia Folk 2023. Over 200 participants from more than 20 countries joined onsite and online to share their folk music and dances. Beyond the performances, the onsite participants in particular got to bond with each other and experience Mongolian culture through its people, language, music and musical instruments, dances and their equine movements, food, architecture, designs, clothing and costumes, architecture, museum visits et al. I hope that there will be greater Philippine representation in future editions of this festival. Though the Philippines does get represented in many other festivals around the world throughout the year, I kept asking myself and even on my Facebook posts why we do not have something of the scale of Asia Folk 2023 that is sustained. As I begin a new chapter in my professional life as the senior director of the FEU Center for the Arts, tasked to replicate the artistic programs and services I have instituted in FEU Manila in our other nine campuses, I would like to collaborate with these existing Philippine-based international folk festivals and other interested partners and stakeholders including the media, foreign embassies and government agencies and offices to create audiences starting with local communities, then expanding outwards to national, regional and even foreign tourists.
