Cagayan braces for ‘Goring’
BAGUIO CITY — The Cagayan Valley Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Friday disclosed that the province is on red alert status amid the possible threat of typhoon “Goring.” The CVRDRRMC — through the Memorandum Order 86 series of 2023 — is solidifying preparations in anticipation of the effects of the new weather disturbance. Local DRRM offices were also directed to conduct heightened monitoring in their respective Areas of Responsibility and strictly implement the “no sailing, fishing and swimming” policy in their AORs. All Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils were directed to submit reposts of their preparedness measures and incident monitoring while those who are in the areas not directly affected or are not affected at all are also advised to organize Humanitarian Assistance at Disaster Response Teams ready to extend assistance to the people. Local chief executives in the region were also told to perform their mandate in times of calamities. LDRRMOs are also to conduct Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment or PDRA. State weather bureau PAGASA, meantime, said that Goring continues to intensify as it moves southwestward of the country while another cyclone has been monitored near the Philippine area of responsibility. In its latest weather bulletin, PAGASA said that “Goring” will affect Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and mainland Cagayan, Isabela and the northern portion of Aurora, and Ilocos provinces until Monday noon with forecast rainfall are generally higher in elevated or mountainous areas. It also warned that flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities that experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days. Meanwhile, the weather bureau said the Southwest Monsoon or habagat will be enhanced by “Goring” and bring occasional rains over the western portions of Central Luzon and Southern Luzon beginning tomorrow and over the western portion of Visayas beginning on Sunday. What happened in Bali?
Instagram posts are pretty much how we find out where our favorite celebrities are, and the cake has barely been cut on the Maine-Mendoza and Arjo Atayde wedding in foggy and stormy Baguio that these same celebs are now arriving in sunny Bali, Indonesia for the wedding of award-winning actor and Crown Management CEO Maja Salvador and Public Relations bigwig Rambo Nunez. It remains to be seen whether newly minted bride Maine Mendoza is attending Maja’s wedding. Maja and Maine became very close friends when Maja brought her dancing and hosting skills to Eat Bulaga! in 2021. They have been openly affectionate about their closeness, even going on a girls’ trip to Singapore with MJ “ recently roasted on the ‘Barbie’” Lastimosa. Rambo has been detailing moments on his Instagram stories —their luggage, the resort, the welcome kits, and the arrival of some of their guests: Enchong Dee, designer Patty Ang, famed wedding photographer Pat Dy, Dr Aivee Teo and husband Alvin, Joshua Garcia, who Maja starred with on the hit teleserye “The Killer Bride”. In Maja’s Instagram stories, the arrival of husband and wife Richard Gutierrez and Sarah Lahbati are captured, along with ABS-CBN President and CEO, Carlo Katigbak. More are certainly expected with this combination of the celebrity world and public relations, already deeply entrenched now even more so with this pairing of Maja and Rambo. It appears that the wedding will be held at the Apurva Kempinski, a luxurious 5-star hotel resort, with a majestic open-air theater. Final bell rings for boxing chief Ed Picson
Philippine sports lost a pillar -- both inside and outside the boxing ring. Edgar “Ed” Picson passed away following a long battle with liver cancer, his friend and longtime colleague Joaquin Henson announced. He was 69. A Letran College alumnus, Picson started his television career as a semi-regular in "John N Marsha" -- a highly-successful sitcom featuring comedy king Dolphy and Nida Blanca in the 1980s -- while doing boardwork as a radio DJ. He made it into sports the following decade as he served as commentator for “Blow By Blow,” the weekly boxing program that launched Manny Pacquiao’s professional career. He also served as color commentator for the Philippine Basketball Association and wrote a regular column at the Manila Bulletin. In 2009, his biggest break came. With the group of industrialist Manny Pangilinan taking over the leadership of the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines from Manny Lopez, Picson was appointed as executive director who will man the day-to-day operations of the organization. A few years later, he was tapped as Vargas’ secretary general replacing Patrick Gregorio. Under Picson, Philippine boxing flourished as he retained the services of longtime coaches like Pat Gaspi, Ronald Chavez and Roel and Boy Velasco while expanding its talent identification program in major provinces like Cebu, Davao and Cagayan de Oro. To make the program more holistic, he hired a foreign mentor in Donn Abnett of Australia and provided the boxers with deep knowledge in strength and conditioning, psychology, nutrition and other sport sciences. The result was truly impressive as his leadership inspired Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam to win a silver medal while Eumir Marcial took home a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. His achievement was greatly rewarded when Vargas passed him the Abap leadership in November of 2021. To make up for his lingering battle with cancer, he tapped a young sport leader in Marcus Manalo to assist him as his secretary general. The boxers were preparing for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games at the Teachers Camp in Baguio City when news of Picson’s demise broke out at high noon on Wednesday. “It is with deep sadness that I confirm that ABAP president Ed Picson passed away this morning due to complications from cancer of the liver,” Manalo said in a statement. “ABAP will have a special board meeting tomorrow and will come up with an official statement.” Henson said branded Picson as a sports broadcasting “legend.” “ABAP president and dear friend Ed Picson passed away at 11 this morning due to complications from liver cancer,” Henson said in a social media post. “Ed was a legend in sports broadcasting and when Senator Manny revived ‘Blow By Blow’ late last year, he was invited to cover the fights but he declined. He will be missed.” Another broadcasting colleague in Bill Velasco said he will definitely miss Picson, whom he worked with in the PBA panel in the 1990s. “Lost another old friend today. Farewell, Ed Picson, my colleague from Vintage Enterprises in the early 1990’s,” Velasco said. “You were always articulate, level-headed, and spoke your mind. A great sportscaster, voice talent, and boxing official. God bless you, kind sir.” The post Final bell rings for boxing chief Ed Picson appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
DOH notes decreasing number of new COVID-19 cases; Pampanga tops latest daily count
The country recorded less than 2,000 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the national caseload to over 387,000. (JANSEN ROMERO / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) There were 1,772 new cases of COVID-19 detected in the Philippines as shown in the latest case update of the Department of Health (DOH), pushing the country’s cumulative total to 387,161. The DOH noted that only 30,876 are active cases, where 82.5 percent are mild, 10 percent are asymptomatic, 2.7 percent are severe, and 4.8 percent are in critical condition. Pampanga tallied the highest number of new cases with 154. Quezon City followed with 115 new infected residents, Laguna with 83, Baguio City with 70, and City of Manila with 69. There were 153 new patients who have recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total to 348,967, which is 90.1 percent of the nationwide caseload. However, the death toll jumped to 7,318 after 49 more fatalities were recorded. “Eleven duplicates were removed from the total case count. Of these, three were recovered cases. Moreover, 13 cases previously tagged as recovered were reclassified as deaths,” the DOH said. In a press briefing last Monday, Nov. 2, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire noted improvements in the country’s fight against the pandemic. “Ngayon nakikita natin yung pagbaba ng kaso (Now we are seeing a decline in cases), we are just averaging about 500 plus cases a day in the National Capital Region,” said Vergeire comparing it to previous months where the NCR had about 2,000 to 2,500 cases daily. “When we talked about the whole country, we were averaging also before, mataas na mga kaso, pero ngayon nakikita natin, yung ating averages for our country would just be about 1,800 in a day,” she added. Vergeire also expressed hopes that all localities in the country would be under a more lenient community quarantine level by next year. “Our target for our milestones would be… hopefully by next year, end of first quarter lahat na ng local governments natin nasa MGCQ (modified general community quarantine) status na,” she said. .....»»
Moviegoer: TWO WOMEN
JUST A THOUGHT: Music in the soul can be heard by the universe. —Lao Tzu TWO WOMEN: They were icons in their fields, one in the movie world, the other in lifestyle journalism. They ought to be remembered, not only for the marks they made in their lifetime, but just as importantly, for the color and vibrancy with which they lived their lives. Here’s hoping the heavens will still make women of their caliber, with that bravura, generosity, and sense of style, with matching humor, in the days to come. Marichu Vera Perez-Maceda and Ethel Soliven-Timbol, two feisty, accomplished women, died within days of each other this September. ‘’Manay’’ Ichu, as she was fondly called by all, was 77. Ethel T was 80. Both suffered from lingering illnesses. JOLLY GOOD FELLOW: For all her sophistication and pedigree, ‘’Manay’’ Ichu, industry pillar and heiress to the legacy of Sampaguita Pictures, was the easiest person I have had to deal with in the movie business. Marichu Vera Perez-Maceda She was always casual and jolly in her conversations, and showed genuine interest in the other person. She was simple as she was grounded. In the late 1970s, I joined her on a coverage of a movie her outfit, MVP Productions, was filming in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. On the first day of shoot—the film was “Dyesebel” — early the next morning, the set was filled with young actors and actresses, either half-naked or in swim suits. Dyesebel herself, Alma Moreno, wore pearly shells on her breast and a fishtail. Ichu surprised everyone by showing up at the beach, wearing high heels and a formal white gown. She said she dressed that way because she wanted to create a happy, glam-filled set. OLD SCHOOL, OLD WORLD: ‘’Manay’’ Ichu could be playful. She loved to laugh. Tell her a bad joke, and she’ll still laugh for you. I guess that’s her way of showing she cares for you and your presence. Or maybe, she was just being polite. Politeness comes with the territory. Marichu is so old school, so old world, that her death can be compared to the passing of an era, such as the Philippine Commonwealth. They don’t make men and women like them anymore. People who are gentle, genteel, elegant. To the end, she lived up to the demands of that bygone era she was brought up in. She wrote letters to friends by long hand. Her last letter to me was written in 2019, in which she enclosed a basket of tinapang bangus from Pangasinan. She sent Christmas cards delivered at your doorstep. She wrote sympathy notes when someone dear passes on. She was everything this new world has ceased from being. COLOR IN JOURNALISM: Throughout her lifetime, many couldn’t understand her. She wasn’t a woman for nothing. Ethel Soliven-Timbol, 80, who reigned as Lifestyle Editor of the Manila Bulletin from 1976 to 2007, was a tough nut to crack. She was feisty, all right, yet she could also be very funny and witty. Ethel Soliven-Timbol She gave color to journalism by speaking her mind, what first came to it, regardless of audience, location, or circumstance. Often, that remark could be biting, which sent people cowering in fear, or in awe. An old school journalist, Ethel demanded perfection from her writers. She screamed over wrong grammar or syntax, swore at PR persons who wrote bad press releases. On a good day, in the middle of editing and closing pages, we would hear her sing out loud, as if she was alone in the big newsroom, nonchalantly. But, that was Ethel, she could get away with most anything. She was queen, after all, and who cared if she couldn’t sometimes hit those high notes? SOFTY SIDE: We, Ethel’s long time colleagues at the Bulletin, also knew the lady’s other side. She could be soft and tender, like the slice of moisty chocolate cake she would offer me in the afternoons when her desk would be flooded with all sorts of pastries and food from everywhere, from people who worshiped at her feet for a square inch of space in her most sought after section. Dianne Feinstein said, ‘’Toughness doesn’t have to come in a pinstriped suit.’’ Ethel did one better. She dressed elegantly at all times, never forgetting she was one tough lady whose voice was to be taken seriously at all times, whether or not she was joking, or just being her spoiled-little-rich-girl self. Bye, Ethel!.....»»
Robredo cites gov’t data showing COVID-19 response is not working
Vice President and opposition leader Leni Robredo on Sunday pointed at government data to prove her claim that it’s doing something wrong in its response to the coronavirus pandemic. Vice-President Leni Robredo (OVP / Facebook / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) “Iyong datos—at ang datos galing sa pamahalaan—iyong datos ang ating basehan kung bakit natin sinasabi na kung ano iyong ginagawa natin ngayon, hindi siya nagwo-work,” she said on her radio show. Robredo reiterated her call on the administration to reassess its policies and improve in areas where lapses have been committed following the request of frontline health workers to revive strict lockdowns in Metro Manila and its adjacent regions. The vice president said the medical community’s appeal for comprehensive strategy against COVID-19 is a valid request that should be seriously considered. “Iyong lahat na punto nila, halimbawa na lang sinasabi nila na ‘iyong ginagawa natin ngayon is not working.’ Iyon din iyong punto ko, eh. Na hindi working iyong ginagawa natin ngayon kasi pataas nga nang pataas iyong bilang,” she said. As of August 1, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 4,963 additional COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of coronavirus infections in the country to 98,232. “Ito nga 98,000, validated lang dahil iyong for validation pa, kung hindi ako nagkakamali, nasa mga 37,000, 38,000 pa. Ito iyong discrepancy. So kapag dinagdag mo pa iyon, talagang unimaginable na iyong numbers natin,” she said. Robredo also cited the data from tracing czar Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong that showed only four of over 600 local government units have contract tracing capability. For each positive COVID-19 case, only eight persons are being traced on the average instead of the standard of 37, she said.“Iyong ina-announce na so much number of contact tracers, na 52,000 yata—52,000 na iyong na-hire, pero ang sabi ng WHO, dapat ang ideal para sa atin 132,000 iyong ma-hire na contact tracers,” Robredo added. She said the Philippines is now conducting 30,000 tests for coronavirus per day, but she noted it took the government two months to meet its target daily testing capacity in May.The vice president said she was surprised with the “mass recovery adjustment” after the DOH reported a record-high in recoveries of COVID-19 patients at 38,075.Robredo asserted the DOH must inform the public before changing its data system. “Kung magpapalit ng definition, kung magpapalit ng protocols, baka mas maganda na ina-announce iyon sa tao bago makita iyong numero kasi talagang nagulat lahat. Tapos ang pinaka-mahirap, pagkatapos noong one-time-big-time na isang araw, the following day balik sa dati,” she said......»»
