UP-United Auctioneers score first win

Games Thursday: (FilOil Flying V Centre) 2:00 pm — UE-Cherrylume vs Cocolife  4:15 pm — Foton vs UP-UAI 7:00 pm — Generika-Ayala vs Smart-Army   IMUS CITY -- University of the Philippines-United Auctioneers, Inc. (UP-UAI) and Foton hammered contrasting wins to book a battle for seventh place in the Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga (PSL) Invitational Conference Tuesday at the Imus Sports Center here. Isa Molde provided the much-needed firepower for the Lady Maroons, who recovered from rusty start to bag their first win at the expense of Cocolife, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-13. Earlier, Foton walked over University of the East-Cherrylume to punch a ticket for the consolation round. According to organizers, the Iron Lady Warriors could not travel to Cavite due to heavy rainfall and flood brought by Typhoon Henry. In fact, UE cancelled classes and office operations early in the day. The Tornadoes and Lady Maroons will clash for seventh place on Thursday when the league rolls back to Filoil Flying V Centre. Molde unloaded 17 points off 14 kills, two service aces and a block to put UP-UAI in the win column after a string of misfortunes in this tourney. “Our first win in the PSL is special. As I’ve said before our team is playing well. We just needed to find the perfect winning formula,” said UP-UAI head coach Godfrey Okumu after breaking out of a winless four-game preliminary round in Pool A.  Molde drew ample support from Marian Buitre and Abi Goc delivering 10 and nine points, respectively. Jessma Ramos added seven markers, while setter Ayel Estrañero had as many points on top of 35 excellent sets and 16 digs. “Today it went well and the team really deserves the results even though we started in a shaky way,” Okumu added. The Lady Maroons bucked a lethargic start falling short in the first set but caught fire in the next three sets dominating the Asset Managers in one hour and 35 minutes. Nobody scored in double figures for Cocolife with Justine Tiu and Cecilia Bangad tallying six points each.  The Asset Managers will take on the Iron Lady Warriors for the 9th place also on Thursday......»»

Even with busy schedule, National Team member Dawn Macandili gets to bond with family

De La Salle University Lady Spiker and Philippine Women’s Volleyball National Team member Dawn Macandili is one busy body. She once said hard work beats talent and put in the time to be where is she now. She recently the UAAP Finals MVP and was the first Filipino libero—a player highly specialized in defensive skills—to win the Most Valuable Player Award when she won it at the 2016 Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference. The diminutive but extremely skilled young lady has a daily routine that isn’t for the weak.  “A normal day would involve sprints, a warm-up with balls, six-on-six, then a focus on individual skills, one-man, sometimes, weights training, plyometrics. That’s an everyday cycle,” she says. Entire mornings take up this cycle. In the afternoon, she hops to the university to attend classes.  Dawn has persisted throughout the rigors of training for the sport. She now also lives away from her family as she has to be closer to school and training venues. It has become rare for her to come home. But she has found the time and opportunity to bond with her family. A typical bonding moment with her equally busy dad, a businessman, Donato, comprises of sharing a meal and watching television. “In college, I would hardly come home because of the time training takes up. So each time I see him, we eat,” she said.  And thankfully, technology has also caught up on her parents and has allowed them to have bonding moments the modern way. “Recently my parents discovered social media, so they also post and communicate with me through messaging” she said. Dawn says she finds that her relationship with her dad has also evolved. “He’s now more malambing,” Dawn says, “…compared to before when he was super strict and did not allow us to go out,” she added. And with technology now more accessible than ever, no schedule is too tight for any family to bonding or share moments with family. More families can also experience the same enriching moments made possible by connecting through One SKY’s fiber-powered broadband.  .....»»

LOOK: Kib Montalbo meets idol Chris Ross, then gets all sweet with Des Cheng

De La Salle Green Archers team captain Kib Montalbo was a happy camper earlier this week after finally getting to meet one of his basketball idols.  Montalbo took to twitter Wednesday evening and posted a picture of himself alongside PBA star Chris Ross of the San Miguel Beermen.  Finally with my idol! @cmross6 🙌🏻 pic.twitter.com/nrb7VWmjdp — Kib Montalbo (@kibmontalbo) June 27, 2018 Montalbo chose a pretty good basketball idol to look up to, given that Ross is a six-time PBA champion a two-time PBA Finals MVP, and a former PBA Best Player of the Conference Awardee.  Montalbo is doing good for himself in the collegiate ranks as well, having already captured two UAAP titles with DLSU.  With the Bacolod-born playmaker set to play out his final year with DLSU this coming UAAP Season 81, it won't be a longshot if we see Montalbo and Ross play with, or against each other in the PBA one day.  For now however, Montalbo has his sights set on the UAAP, and in preparation, he and the Green Archers are set to jet to Taiwan to defend their BLIA Cup championship.  Now, the picture with Ross is nice and all, but something that caught the fans eyes is the little exchange Montalbo had with...special someone...DLSU Lady Spiker Desiree Cheng following the photo.  Obviously happy for Kib finally getting to meet his hero, Des replied with a playful "Yieeee", followed by a subtle jab at excited eyes.  Saan na mata mu — Desiree Wynea Cheng (@itsmedescheng) June 27, 2018 As smooth as he is on the court, Montalbo has a pretty good comeback for Cheng.  Nasayo lang po 😍 — Kib Montalbo (@kibmontalbo) June 27, 2018 Yo.
