Jaymee Joaquin, ‘Games Uplate Live’ host, dies at 44
Filipina actress and host Jaymee Joaquin has passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 44 years old. Colleague-turned-friend Corss Ebora-Valenton paid tribute to the former actress on 19 October. “She was powerful not because she wasn’t scared but because she went on so strongly despite the fear. You will be dearly missed, Jayms,” Valenton wrote. Valenton added that she was grateful for the opportunity to work and be reunited with Joaquin the previous year for Jaymee’s passion project titled Beautiful Scars, which chronicles Filipina breast cancer “thrivers.” “Itutuloy at tatapusin namin ang proyekto natin. Your legacy lives on with the @beautifulscarsdocu,” she added. Meanwhile, Joaquin’s cousin, Erika Geronimo, also shared the news of her death. “It is with a heavy heart that our family announces the passing of my cousin, Jaymee Topacio aka Jaymee Wins or Jaymee Joaquin. She lived an extraordinary life filled with adventure, laughter, and love. She inspired and touched a lot of lives through her advocacy and talent. She will be greatly missed and will always be in our loving memory as a strong woman,” Geronimo wrote. “A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered,” she concluded. Joaquin’s acting and hosting career in the Philippines blossomed when she was the game show jock for the late-night interactive show Games Uplate Live. She also appeared in numerous television shows and movies, such as Super Inggo 2: Ang Bagong Bangis (2007), Shake, Rattle and Roll 9 (2007), My Big Love (2008) and Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat (2008). In 2016, the former Star Magic actress was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite her cancer recurring four times and forcing her to go through multiple surgeries, Joaquin maintained a healthy and positive mindset. She ventured into blogging, podcasting and writing two books, titled That Sh*t Called Cancer and No-Hair Mama, Don’t Care. Malunggay ice cream for lactating mothers
As mothers dive into breastfeeding, this path is filled with triumphant moments and challenges. They’re not alone on this journey as Fog City Creamery offers a delicious helping hand -- lactation ice cream with malunggay. UNICEF Philippines’ 2017 data highlights the importance of early breastfeeding initiation, with an encouraging 57 percent of infants being breastfed within the first hour after birth. This initial support is crucial for both mothers and babies. However, the numbers dip to around 34 percent for continued exclusive breastfeeding from zero to six months. This disparity underscores many mothers’ challenges in maintaining exclusive breastfeeding, such as managing low milk supply and work demands. “We partnered with Vpharma and used its Mega -Malunggay and Herbilogy products to formulate our lactation ice cream flavors, enriched with galactagogues, such as fenugreek, oats, malunggay and malt, to enhance milk production, and achieve breastfeeding goals,” Edy Gamboa-Liu, managing director of Fog City Creamery, said. Beyond nourishment, Fog City Creamery’s lactation ice cream is a gesture of self-care. You are taking a moment for yourself amidst the beautiful chaos of motherhood, as every spoonful is a celebration of your dedication to your baby and a tribute to the incredible bond you’re building through breastfeeding. Fog City Creamery’s lactation ice cream flavors are Mega-Malunggay, Herbilogy Breastfeeding Milk Tea and Herbilogy Choco Malt Oat Praline with Fenugreek. These are available at P1 Power Plant Mall in Makati City or by order via 0917 883 3344 or fogcitycreamery@gmail.com. Slovenia celebrates UNESCO recognition for renowned Lipizzan horses
People watched in awe as the world-renowned Lipizzan horses put on a dazzling show this month in the village of Lipica in the small Alpine state of Slovenia. The home of one of the world's most distinguished horse breeds -- and seven countries in the region that once were part of the Habsburg Empire -- have reason to celebrate. Their shared tradition of Lipizzan breeding recently made UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The noble Lipizzans, also known as Lipizzaners, are descendants of long stallion lines crossing Spanish, Arabic and Berber horses and were first bred by the Habsburg court in the 16th century. They are famous for their "airs above the ground" classical dressage jumps -- a series of difficult movements requiring strength and precision, in which the horse's feet leave the ground. This rare breed -- featuring white hair but grey skin -- is also famed as a carriage horse. The name derives from tiny Lipica, nestled among Slovenia's verdant hills and lush forests. The picturesque village is home to one of the world's oldest stud farms, which dates back to 1580 and currently stables more than 400 blue-blooded horses. "This is the Lipizzan's home," said Slovenian culture minister Asta Vrecko, ahead of the UNESCO ceremony last weekend. The event was attended by the eight countries that jointly applied for recognition of their shared breeding heritage -- Austria, Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. For a moment, time stood still as horses and riders from the eight nations performed their dressage and driving exhibition. "They are phenomenal animals. The way that they've been trained and the level of skill of the riders is incredible," said 42-year-old horse farm owner Laura Highlander, who travelled all the way from the United States to see the horses. "I was super excited to be able to come... and see them in their training," she added after visiting the Lipica stud farm. Equine ballet Dark at birth, the Lipizzan horses' coat turns white by the time they are about four years old, which is also when their demanding training starts and the most promising stallions are selected. "Lipizzans can have a strong temperament. They are usually serene, sometimes shy. They are kind and it is up to us to recognize the quality of each horse," Miro Dragic, head of the Lipica stud farm riders' team, told AFP. If health permits, these athletic equine stars, can be worth up to several hundred thousand euros (dollars) each, and can remain active well into their mid-20s. Only the best stallions will be trained in the elitist "haute ecole" of classical dressage to eventually master an equine ballet of cantering, caprioles and pirouettes. The riders, who sport tailcoats and Napoleonic bicorne hats, must also be at the top of their game to get the best from their sensitive partners. "With horses it's like with people. There are many external elements -- weather included -- that can affect them," stableman Amadej Cej told AFP while grooming one of his elegant stallions. It's stablemen like Cej who spend quality time with these beautiful creatures, attending to their every need "from birth until their end". Vigan City launches tourist passport as it celebrates its arts festival
[caption id="attachment_129307" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROEL HOANG MANIPON FOR THE DAILY TRIBUNE | Vigan City mayor Jose ‘Bonito’ Singson Jr., city and province officials and special guest, former senator Nikki Coseteng, led the launch of the Vigan City Tourist Passporton Calle Crisologo.[/caption] Vigan City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Ilocos Region, and its main draw is the handsome heritage houses, the Filipino bahay na bato, that date back to the Spanish colonial era. These old houses cluster around Calle Crisologo, the heritage center of the capital of the province of Ilocos Sur in northwestern Luzon Island, and the area, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, has highest concentration of heritage structures in the Philippines. The city also has several museums, extraordinary for regions outside of Metro Manila, and traditional crafts such as pottery and textile weaving still survive and had become tourist attractions. It also affords visitors a taste of the food of the Ilocano people, the dominant ethnic group in the region, such as pinakbet, poque-poque, tinubong, their version of the empanada and bagnet. [caption id="attachment_129306" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Iconic bagnet was one of the Ilocano dishes served during the passport launch.[/caption] The local government has been concocting touristic events and products to entice more visitors, especially now that tourism in the area is recovering from the lockdowns because of the coronavirus pandemic and the July 2022 northern Luzon earthquake, which damaged several old structures in the area including the 19th-century Metropolitan Cathedral of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle and the Saint Augustine of Hippo Church of neighboring town of Bantay, which remain closed until today. One of the city’s touristic efforts is its own tourist passport. Using a tourist passport has recently become a fun activity for tourists in several areas around the world. In Taiwan, for example, tourists earn cute stamps on their passports on every destination and landmark they visit. In the Philippines, the Department of Tourism issued Jose Rizal passports in 2011 in celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the Filipino writer and hero. Tourists earned stamps in sites associated with Rizal all over the Philippines such as his birthplace in Calamba, Laguna, and his place of exile in Dapitan, Zamboange del Norte. Tourists who completed their stamps earned prizes. [caption id="attachment_129308" align="aligncenter" width="525"] The tourist passport is said to have a rewards system, aimed at boosting local businesses, and holders earn stamps by patronizing stores, restaurants and other establishments.[/caption] In Vigan City, the passport is a way to boost local businesses, according to its mayor, Jose “Bonito” Singson, Jr., who is from the province’s most dominant political clan and who spearheaded the venture. The Ciudad de Vigan Pasaporte de Turista is said to have a rewards system, and holders earn stamps by patronizing stores, restaurants and other establishments in the city. The launch of the tourist passport on 28 April served as the opening event of the Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts, which ran until 5 May. The Binatbatan is one of three main festivals of the city, strategically scheduled throughout the year. The Longganisa Festival in the early part of the year is inspired by the city’s popular version of the Filipino pork sausage, while the Raniag: The Vigan Twilight Festival in October features the celebration of Halloween and the traditional local undas, which honors the departed. Binatbatan is in the middle of the hot, dry season, and highlights heritage, creativity and culture. The launch was held on charming Calle Crisologo led by Singson, a whole day affair starting with a motorcade in the morning and an al-fresco program with dinner in the evening. The event was attended by provincial and city government officials and employees, visitors and special guests such as former senator Anna Dominique “Nikki” Marquez-Lim Coseteng. [caption id="attachment_129303" align="aligncenter" width="525"] A beautiful setup for the launch of the Vigan City Tourist Passport on Calle Crisologo, famous for its heritage houses.[/caption] The tourist passports were readily made available to purchase through booths placed on the main street, at the city hall and online at www.vigancity.gov.ph. Singson hinted at more tourism projects to come. The Binatbatan Festival started rolling. A mural, a collaboration among local artists, has just been unveiled at the Plaza Burgos, where Art in the Park was held on 29 April, including an art exhibit and a painting contest. At night, several groups performed at the Vigan Dance Festival 7. The Food and Trade Fair, at the Boardwalk on Govantes Dike, by the banks of Mestizo River, and the Abel Product Expo were opened on that day. [caption id="attachment_129305" align="aligncenter" width="525"] An on-the-spot art contest at Plaza Burgos.[/caption] On 30 April, the Capture the Vigan Experience: On the Spot Photography Competition was held with the theme “Time Travel” for the Professional Category and “Ilocano Heritage Hospitality” for the Amateur Category, as well as the Television and Music Video Competition. While the Black and White Photography Exhibit was mounted on Calle Crisologo, the Abel and Recycled Costume Ramparade featured designs using recycled materials and the local hand-woven textile at the Vigan City Hall. Other festival events and activities included the Abel Iloco Fashion Show and Competition, the Damili Jar Painting Competition, Reynas ti Mayo, Kalesa Parade and Competition, Carabao Painting and Pasagad Dressing, Ramada Traditional Games, a skateboarding competition, and the Binatbatan Tattto and Band Festival. The festival concluded with the street-dancing and showdown competition, a regular fixture in recently created Philippines festivals. Contingents of young performers danced on the streets in colorful costumes carrying batbats or bamboo sticks, and mimicking the movements of the batbatin, the traditional process of taking the seeds out of the dried fiber of the kapok, or kapas in Ilokano, by beating the cotton-like material with sticks, which the festival memorializes and from which it derived its name. Diane von Furstenberg: From Brussels to the big time in the States
Diane von Furstenberg is a US fashion icon. But she never forgot her Belgian roots -- as evidenced by a return to Brussels, the city of her birth, to celebrate a half-century of her glamorous career. "I really lived an American dream as a young European and it was fascinating," the 76-year-old told AFP in an interview as the Belgian capital puts on an exhibition of her work. The show, at Brussels' Fashion and Lace Museum, is the first exhibition in Europe dedicated to the Belgian-American designer, organizers said. Naturally, pride of place goes to von Furstenberg's signature wrap dress, which made her famous as soon as it went on sale in 1973, three years after she made New York her home. Sought after for its simplicity and practicality, the soft jersey wrap dress has been made in several dozen iterations in bright colors, making it an enduring feature in celebrity wardrobes. "It makes a woman confident. And if you are confident, you are beautiful," von Furstenberg said with a wide smile. "The jersey: very practical. Doesn't crinkle. You put in a print that moves and moves with your body. That all of a sudden makes beautiful curves in your body. The shape: very simple." At age 25, von Furstenberg was making 25,000 dresses a week to keep up with demand. Her star never dimmed, enabling her to go into philanthropy and support her view of herself as "a big feminist". That's a theme informing the Brussels exhibition, which is titled "Woman Before Fashion". "What is most important to me is to use my voice, my experience, my knowledge, my resources, my connections in order to help other women to be the women they want to be," she said. 'A miracle' With her second husband, US media billionaire Barry Diller, von Furstenberg runs a foundation that annually hands out awards to personalities seen as inspiring other women. For her own sources of inspiration, she cites first above all her mother, a survivor of the Nazi concentration camps who incarnated, for her, combativeness and a desire for freedom. Liliane Halfin, nee Nahmias, came from a Greek-Jewish family. She was deported to Auschwitz in Poland and then to the Ravensbrueck camp in Germany as a young bride in her 20s. When she was freed in 1945 she weighed less than 25 kilograms (55 pounds) and was in such poor condition that doctors recommended she postpone having children. "She was a skeleton amongst ashes. She went to concentration camps and she wasn't supposed to survive," von Furstenberg said, adding that her own birth 18 months later was "a miracle". After the end of World War II her parents settled in Brussels, where the future designer, then named Diane Halfin, lived until age 14 before going to boarding school in Switzerland and England. It was during her university studies that she met her first husband, a jet-setting European prince named Eduard Egon von Furstenberg, whose name she kept after their divorce. That name is now indelibly linked to the world of fashion. For the curator of the Brussels exhibition, Nicolas Lor, one of the keys to the success of the Diane von Furstenberg label was the combination of a dress of typically European style with material that offered comfortable wear. "She mixed the concept of the little dress that was thought up in the 1920s with the principles of sportswear and comfort that clearly defined apparel in the United States," explained Lor, a French fashion expert who has worked at Chanel and Christian Dior. "For me, she was American," he smiled. The exhibition runs to January next year. The post Diane von Furstenberg: From Brussels to the big time in the States appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
