Pia Wurtzbach says the worth of a woman is not measured by childbearing capacity
Pia Wurtzbach is all about women empowerment in an interview with Arab interviewer and entrepreneur Anash Bukhash in a YouTube video on Wednesday, 2 August. The Miss Universe 2015 said she wants "to stand up for women who choose not to have kids," pointing out that the worth of a woman is not measured by being able to bear a child. Wurtzbach, however, made it clear that she would like to have children one day, after apparently hearing the 'when are you going to have a baby?' question after she got married. "I do want to have children one day. Not now... not at this point in my career and in my life. Jeremy is also fine with that, but in the future, we would love to have a family," Wurtzbach said. Indonesia volcano draws thousands for ritual sacrifice
Thousands of Hindu worshippers scaled an active Indonesian volcano on Monday to toss livestock, food and other offerings into its smoking crater in a centuries-old religious ceremony. Swarming the thin rim around the basin of Mount Bromo, devotees heaved goats, chickens and vegetables slung across their backs up to the dusty peak as part of the Yadnya Kasada festival. Every year Tengger tribe members from surrounding highlands gather at the top of the volcano -- famed for its stunning sunrise views -- in hope of pleasing their gods and bringing luck to the Tenggerese, an Indigenous group in eastern Java. Slamet, a 40-year-old farmer who like many Indonesians goes by only one name, brought a baby cow as an offering. "We have a lot of cows back home and this one can be considered excess, so we are bringing it here... to return it back to God," he told AFP. "This is also an act of gratitude to God for giving us prosperity... We return it back to God so we can come back here next year." The calf had a lucky escape as it was handed to a villager after Slamet's prayers instead of being sacrificed to the volcanic cauldron. Some villagers who do not belong to the Tengger tribe took to the crater's steep slopes equipped with nets in an attempt to intercept offerings thrown into the abyss and avoid them going to waste. Farmer Joko Priyanto brought some of his own produce in the form of cabbages and carrots to lob down into the smoky void. "I hope I will receive a reward from the almighty God," the 36-year-old said. 'Better income' Monday's ritual was the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic that authorities had allowed tourists to the site after the festival was limited to worshippers last year. The event has its roots in 15th-century folklore from the Majapahit kingdom, a Javanese Hindu-Buddhist empire that stretched across Southeast Asia. Legend has it that Princess Roro Anteng and her husband, unable to bear children after years of marriage, begged the gods for help. Their prayers were answered when they were promised 25 children, as long as they agreed to sacrifice their youngest child by throwing him into Mount Bromo. Their son is said to have willingly jumped into the volcano to guarantee the prosperity of the Tengger people. For shopkeeper Rohim, who travelled from a nearby Javan city on Monday to launch potatoes, leeks and cash into the lava, it was a chance to pray for good luck. He said his fortunes had improved following previous visits. "Business has been better than before, hence my coming here," the 32-year-old said. "I'm hoping my business can improve so next year I can come back." The post Indonesia volcano draws thousands for ritual sacrifice appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
REVIEW: ‘THE MOTHER’ (2023): Nothing new — except as fresh proof of JLo’s versatility
If The Mother was released 30 years ago, it would have been a clear stand-out in the film library of your mind. But after Liam Neeson’s cult favorite Taken (2008), followed by a slate of similarly themed action-thrillers, The Mother has been reduced to so-so Netflix fare. Released on the giant streaming platform just in time for Mother’s Day, the action-thriller centers on a mysterious but ultra-deadly woman only known as The Mother (Jennifer Lopez). The movie opens at an FBI safe house in a sleepy Indiana suburb. The Mother is being interrogated by the feds, led by Cruise (Omari Hardwick). After receiving condescending and doubtful stares, The Mother proves she knows best when she survives — with her DYI savviness — and even saves Cruise. Then, as the safe house explodes, it is revealed that she is very much pregnant. [caption id="attachment_131917" align="aligncenter" width="1404"] Photograph courtesy of Netflix/ Doane Gregory | Jennifer Lopez in ‘The Mother.’[/caption] Who is the father? Well, considering the dangerous world she’s in, it’s definitely not some random handsome dude. But two possible murderous arms dealers, played by Joseph Fiennes and Gael Garcia Bernal. The idea is sort of funny, but you ride along with it. So The Mother gives birth to a baby girl but has no choice but to hand her daughter who has arms-dealer-assassin genes to the FBI. It is safer that way. Then she hides in a remote, Instagrammable cabin, with her dormant killer skills and perfectly flawless skin. But The Mother won’t retire to a quiet life in the wilderness for too long. Deadlier than ever Twelve years after the bloody attack in the FBI safe house, her friend (Paul Raci of The Sound of Metal) tells her that her daughter Zoe (Lucy Paez), now a pre-teen, is in danger. And so violence ensues. The Mother, protective of the child she gave up more than a decade ago, suddenly becomes a true-blue action heroine, deadlier than ever, just to keep her daughter safe. Yep, don’t mess with Mom when it comes to her offspring. The action set pieces are decent: hand-to-hand combat, snowmobile chase, you name it. It does help that the movie, with its semi-stylish moody visuals, features visually pleasing locations: Alaska, Havana and Ohio. Lopez always has this magical ability to hold your attention toward the end regardless of whether you are enjoying the movie. Here, she showcases decent action moves, but you can’t help but think she’d be better off in serious drama. She has, for the longest time, exhibited mastery in nuances and depth, which is still very much evident in The Mother’s most quiet, tender moments. Working from a rather thin script by Misha Green, Andrea Berloff and Peter Craig, female director Niki Caro (she helped the 2020 live-action version of Disney's Mulan) delivers action with scant thrills. Without JLo as her star, this would have been relegated to the unvisited corners of the streaming platform. It looks nice, feels overlong and delivers nothing new. But at least it continues to prove JLo’s versatility. 2.5 out of 5 stars Premiered 12 May on Netflix The post REVIEW: ‘THE MOTHER’ (2023): Nothing new — except as fresh proof of JLo’s versatility appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Princes Harry, Andrew out in the cold at coronation
Princes Harry and Andrew will both attend the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday but will have no formal role in proceedings -- confirming they remain out in the cold. Charles's younger son Harry and his American wife Meghan quit royal duties in 2020 and have since unleashed a string of barbed attacks on the monarchy. Andrew, the king's brother, has been frozen out over his past association with the disgraced late US financier Jeffrey Epstein and a related sexual abuse allegation which was settled out of court. Harry, 38, the Duke of Sussex, and 63-year-old Andrew, the Duke of York, will attend the coronation service at London's Westminster Abbey but will not perform any duties. The pair will also be absent from the public procession behind the Gold State Coach carrying the newly crowned king from the abbey back to Buckingham Palace after the ceremony. But they may yet appear on the palace balcony. Harry is fifth in line to the throne, following his brother Prince William, and William's three children -- Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis of Wales. Andrew is eighth in line, coming after Harry and his children -- Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet of Sussex. After finally deciding to attend, Harry's every move will be heavily scrutinized. He rejoins his family for the first time since subjecting them to a torrent of stinging criticism in his memoir "Spare" and in a series of television interviews. Meghan has remained in California with the children, thereby avoiding potentially awkward interactions with her in-laws. At the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the royal dukes each paid personal homage and allegiance to the monarch, in a public vow of loyalty. They pledged to "become your liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship; and faith and truth I will bear unto you, to live and die, against all manner of folks. So help me God." But this time, only William, the heir to the throne, will speak "the words of fealty" and pay "the homage of royal blood", as the coronation liturgy calls it -- sparing Harry from having to kneel before his father. Buckingham Palace has not said whether Harry and Andrew will or will not appear on the palace balcony following the ceremony. At Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations last June for her 70 years on the throne, the balcony appearance was restricted to working royals only. But her coronation in 1953 featured multiple balcony appearances, so Harry and Andrew might potentially appear in a wider royal family gathering. Saturday marks Archie's fourth birthday, so Harry might make a swift exit back to his home in California. Andrew's links with Epstein -- boyfriend of the prince's friend Ghislaine Maxwell -- came back to haunt him. A US woman, Virginia Giuffre, said she was pressured to have sex with Andrew when she was 17 after being delivered by Epstein, who was convicted in 2008 of procuring a child for prostitution. Andrew denied the allegations in a November 2019 BBC interview that nonetheless went down badly. Within days, he stepped back from his patronages and in May 2020 he permanently resigned from all public roles. The case was settled out of court in February 2022, with Giuffre accepting a donation to her charity and no admission of liability from Andrew. Andrew took part in events surrounding Queen Elizabeth II's funeral but, beyond mourning his mother, Charles has shown no sign of allowing him a return to public life. Four dead, 28 injured in Alabama teen birthday party shooting
At least four people were killed and more than 20 others injured, mostly teens, in a Saturday night shooting at a birthday party in Alabama, officials said, in the latest spasm of American gun mass violence. Local news reports said the shooting occurred at a Sweet 16 party at a dance studio in Dadeville, a small town northeast of the state capital Montgomery. "There were four lives tragically lost in this incident, and there's been a multitude of injuries," Sergeant Jeremy Burkett, a spokesman for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), told reporters Sunday. He specified later that 28 people had been wounded, some of them critically, and urged residents to come forward with any information they might have related to the attack. But Burkett provided no further details on how the shooting unfolded or why. Annette Allen told the Montgomery Advertiser that her grandson Phil Dowdell was among those who died: he had been celebrating his sister Alexis's 16th birthday when gunfire ripped through the party. "He was a very, very humble child. Never messed with anybody. Always had a smile on his face," Allen said of her grandson, a high school senior and football player due to graduate within weeks. "Everybody's grieving," Allen said of the small community of some 3,000 residents. President Joe Biden, who was briefed on the shooting, said the nation was again grieving over young Americans killed in gun violence. "What has our nation come to when children cannot attend a birthday party without fear?" Biden, who has long sought tighter gun safety measures, asked in a statement. "Guns are the leading killer of children in America, and the numbers are rising -- not declining," he added. "This is outrageous and unacceptable." The nearby Lake Martin Community Hospital received 15 individual gun-shot wound patients, mostly victims in their teens, Heidi Smith, marketing director for the rural health facility's operator IvyCreek Healthcare, told AFP. Six of the patients were discharged and nine have been transferred to facilities with higher levels of care. Of those, five were in critical condition, Smith said. "It's been terrible," she said. More than 12 hours after the tragedy, neither Burkett nor other law enforcement officials provided any details on who may have perpetrated the shooting and why, or whether a suspect has been detained. "We can't share anything further at this time," the sergeant said, adding only that "it was tied to a birthday party." Dadeville Chief of Police Jonathan Floyd called the town "a tight-knit community full of wonderful people." The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said its State Bureau of Investigations has launched a probe together with Dadeville police and federal agencies including the FBI. Television station WRBL of nearby Columbus, Georgia reported heavy police activity overnight and crime scene tape around a building in Dadeville, where it said white sheets could be seen covering parts of the floor. State leaders took to Twitter Sunday offering prayers and decrying violence but they did not provide details on what happened. "This morning, I grieve with the people of Dadeville and my fellow Alabamians," Governor Kay Ivey posted. "Violent crime has NO place in our state." The United States, a country of around 330 million people, is awash with some 400 million guns, and deadly mass shootings are a regular occurrence. The latest deaths came on the 16th anniversary of the deadliest US school shooting on record, in which 32 people were killed at Virginia Tech in 2007. Separately, police confirmed two people were killed and four others wounded in a shooting late Saturday at a crowded park in Louisville, Kentucky, the same city where a bank employee slaughtered five people at his workplace last Monday. There have been 163 mass shootings in the United States so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The non-profit group defines a mass shooting as having a minimum of four victims shot, either injured or killed, excluding any shooter. Efforts to tighten gun controls have for years run up against opposition from Republicans, staunch defenders of the constitutional right to bear arms. The political paralysis endures despite widespread outrage over recurring shootings. The post Four dead, 28 injured in Alabama teen birthday party shooting appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
