MPBL: Risers steal spotlight from Capitals for fifth straight W

Bataan began the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League with a loss. Since then, however, they have been rolling. The Risers registered their fifth consecutive victory, this one coming at the expense of home team Quezon City, 101-68, last Wednesday at the Blue Eagle Gym in Katipunan Avenue. Gary David turned back the clock for a vintage performance of 21 points in 72 percent shooting. “El Granada” was on fire and his teammates only followed suit as they scored no less than 23 points in each quarter. He was backstopped by youngsters Jeepy Faundo and J-Jay Alejandro who had 12 and 10 markers, respectively, as Bataan rose to 5-1. Janus Collado topped the scoring column for the Capitals with 15 points. With a non-existent defense, however, they lost for the fourth time out of five games. Meanwhile, Zamboanga also stretched its streak by dispatching Navotas, 89-78. As always, Reed Juntilla showed the way with a 29-point, 11-rebound double-double as the Valientes improves to 4-2. Muntinlupa, Imus still streaking in MPBL

The streak keeps on going for Muntinlupa and Imus even as last Thursday even as the two teams pulled off contrasting wins over their respective rivals in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta-Datu Cup at the Imus Sports Complex in Cavite. The Cagers survived a near meltdown before holding on for a 77-76 win over the Parañaque Patriots. Muntinlupa had to hold its breath before notching its seventh straight win as it squandered a 31-point lead in the third period and watched Parañaque chop the lead slowly but surely. The Cagers were still comfortably ahead, 73-50, inside the final seven-minute mark when the Patriots let their defense do the work, holding their rivals to just a lone field goal. Ryusei Koga came through with a triple then completed a steal, setting up Ivan Valenzuela for two free throws for a 77-74 count with only five seconds left in the game. Koga gave up a duty foul to stop the clock, but put more pressure on Chito Jaime to make at least one of his two free throws. The ex-pro forward missed the first, then made the second then Harold Arboleda let loose a triple that went in as time expired, making Jaime’s split charities earlier more significant. Arboleda led all scorers with 21 points, but also contributed 10 rebounds for his 10th double-double performance in the league, the most completed by any player in the young two-season history of the fastest growing regional amateur basketball league in the country.    Muntinlupa coach Aldrin Morante admitted that his wards relaxed too much when it built a big lead, but blamed himself as well for experimenting on using different combinations, particularly in giving more playing time to the second stringers. In the nightcap, Imus streaked to its fourth straight win after outplaying Pampanga, 88-76, to improve its win-loss record to 5-3 and forge a tie for second spot in the Southern Division. The Bandera, however, needed to survive a 36-point explosion from Juneric Baloria before extending its winning streak. Baloria’s 36 markers is the new all-time record for most points in a game......»»

Bulacan beats Batangas in duel between MPBL pioneers

Jay-R Taganas imposed his will on the undersized frontline of inaugural champion Batangas before carrying Bulacan in keeping in step with the top teams in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. Taganas only fired eight points, but was a monster on the glass with 17 rebounds as the Kuyas downed the Athletics, 63-54, last Tuesday at home in the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium. The burly big man was backstopped by Hans Thiele who had 11 points and six boards of his own while Jerrick Canada guided the attack with nine markers and 13 assists. With everybody doing their part, the home team scored their sixth win in eight games – remaining well within striking distance of Northern Division pacesetters San Juan, Bataan, Manila, and Mandaluyong. For Batangas, Moncrief Rogado and Lester Alvarez scored 13 points apiece. They dropped to 2-5 in the season. Meanwhile, Basilan barged back into the win column by dropping Caloocan, 92-84. Complementary league to PBA, MPBL tipping off on August 25

A new regional league has been formed to stand behind and provide support for both the PBA and the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. The National Basketball League will feature 12 teams ranging from Central Luzon to Bicol, all of which will be parading fully homegrown players. The NBL aims to be another venue for lesser heralded players to be able showcase their skills on a national stage. “We are focused on grassroots development. It is our dream that our players will be noticed by professional and semi-professional leagues,” chairman Celso “Soy” Mercado said in the preseason press conference on Thursday in Mandaluyong. As such, organizers are hoping that the league will be a “complementary league” for the PBA, Asia’s first pay-for-play league, as well as the MPBL, the country’s fastest-growing regional league. The dozen squads making up NBL’s inaugural season are the Bataan Elite, Bulacan Makabayan, Camarines Sur Express, Dasmarinas Monarchs, Laguna Pistons, Marikina Shoemakers, Nueva Ecija Bespren, Pangasinan, Paranaque Aces, Quezon City Rising Stars, Rizal Spartans, and Taguig Generals. All 12 teams will have 18 fully homegrown players and will host home games – giving their respective communities a chance to watch their very own players up close and personal. Being fully homegrown is the greatest promise the league has – if commissioner Nandy Garcia is to be believed. “My life in basketball has gone full circle in now being the commissioner of the NBL. I’m looking forward to seeing new potential talents from our member teams,” the former pro said. The NBL’s inaugural season is scheduled to tip-off on August 25 in either Paranaque or Taguig. After the single round robin elimination round, the top two teams will automatically advance into the semifinals and the bottom two teams will be eliminated. The third to 10th ranked teams will then match up in the quarterfinals. At the end of it all, the first-ever champion will be crowned and will set a date opposite the kings of the Vietnam Basketball Association......»»

MPBL: Navotas-Munti matchup suspended as Neypes triple try breaks ring

A faulty basketball ring has left the game between Navotas and Muntinlupa hanging after the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League decided to suspend the matchup at the Navotas Sports Complex last Saturday. Apparently, one of the rings got nearly disconnected following a three-point attempt by Navotas' Kyle Neypes at 1:34 in the fourth quarter of the matchup between the Clutch and the Cagers in the 2018 Anta-Datu Cup. The Clutch's Michole Sorela was still able to sink in a follow-up when game officials decided to halt the match for safety purposes. Muntinlupa was leading the game in overtime, 98-95, when it was suspended.  The Cagers could have walked away with a fourth victory if not for the stoppage. The Clutch's record, on the other hand, remained at 2-2. In the first game, the Bataan Risers turned back the Imus Bandera, 95-85. Former PBA cager Byron Villarias unloaded 25 points to lift the Risers past the Bandera. It was the fourth consecutive win by Bataan, which improved to 4-1. The loss was the third in four games for Imus......»»

MPBL: Parks Jr. flirts with quadruple-double as Manda destroys Pasig

Mandaluyong did not take long to show just how hungry it was for its first-ever winning streak in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. Rampaging to a 16-0 start, the El Tigre buried Pasig in a hole it could never get out of for a 98-55 demolition job on Thursday at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezpn City. Ray Parks Jr. opened the floodgates and the rest of his teammates in the starting five only followed suit. It wasn’t just on offense that Mandaluyong was on-point from the get-go, however, as it did not allow a single basket for the first five minutes. Their lead would only balloon into as big as 50. With the game already decided, head coach Mac Cuan decided to rest key cogs Parks Jr. and Prince Rivero for the final frame. In their place, Kapamilya star Xian Lim was sent in and made good on his first-ever basket, a three from the top of the key early in the fourth. He wound up with six points, six rebounds, and one block. Still, it all wouldn’t have been possible if not for Parks Jr.’s brilliance. In just 23 minutes of action, he tallied a triple-double of 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. In fact, three steals more and we would’ve had a quadruple-double in the El Tigre’s second straight win following a season-opening loss. It wasn’t meant to be, however, as Cuan decided against putting him on the floor for too long. Despite the big win, though, Mandaluyong are nothing but confident they could do even better. For the Pirates, Bernzon Franco showed the way with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double. They remain winless in three games. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
