Rodriguez leads Colombia to win over Argentina

By Debora Rey, Associated Press SALVADOR, Brazil (AP) — James Rodriguez got the best of Lionel Messi in the Copa America, leading Colombia to a 2-0 win over Argentina in their opening game in the South American tournament on Saturday. Rodriguez set up Roger Martinez's opening goal in the second half with a high, diagonal pass across the field, and substitute Duván Zapata scored late to seal the victory that allowed Colombia to end a 12-year winless streak against the Argentines. Messi had missed a chance to put Argentina in front, sending a close-range header off target as his team opened the tournament with a loss for the first time since 1979. "Our best player was the entire team," Colombia coach Carlos Queiroz said. "The next match will certainly be more difficult, this is only the beginning." Both Argentina and Colombia are trying to end title droughts, with the Argentines winless since the 1993 Copa America and the Colombians without a trophy since the 2001 edition. Argentina lost the finals of the World Cup in 2014 and the Copa America in 2015 and 2016, where it lost both of the latter in penalty shootouts against Chile. Colombia's last win over Argentina was in South American qualifying for the World Cup in 2007. "It had been a long time (without beating Argentina)," Zapata said. "Everyone in Colombia is very happy, but there is still a long way to go in the Copa, we still have important matches ahead." Messi and Rodriguez had a mostly quiet match in Salvador, although Rodriguez provided the assist for Martinez's 71st-minute opener. The playmaker gained possession inside Colombia's own half before picking out Martinez with a long pass. The forward brought the ball down on the left flank before cutting into the penalty area and shooting into the far corner of the net. "We are disappointed because they scored a great goal when we were playing better," Messi said. "It will take some time to accept this defeat, but we have to take the positives from today and move on to try to win the next match. We still have plenty of chances." Argentina's first loss in a Copa America game in regulation time since 2007 was confirmed in the 86th minute. Five minutes after entering the match, Zapata converted from Jefferson Lerma's cross. Argentina striker Sergio Aguero and Colombia veteran Radamel Falcao also couldn't do much to help their teams break through their opponents' defense in a tense opening match in Group B. "We improved in the second half and created chances," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, who complained of the bad field conditions at the Arena Fonte Nova. "We still have two matches left and if we win them we will certainly advance." Argentina will next play against Paraguay in Belo Horizonte, while Colombia will face Qatar in Sao Paulo. Paraguay and Qatar meet in the other Group B match on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro. Earlier Saturday, Peru was held by 10-man Venezuela to a 0-0 draw in Group A, a result that left both teams two points behind host Brazil, which opened with a 3-0 win over Bolivia on Friday in Sao Paulo......»»

San Juan starts MPBL title defense with thrilling triumph over Bacoor

San Juan wasted no time proving that all those after the MPBL Lakan Cup trophy will have to go through it, silencing fellow powerhouse Bacoor, 77-76, in its home court Strike Gym on Friday. Mike Ayonayon led four Knights in double-digits with 22 points on top of 10 rebounds, four assists, and two steals. John Wilson and Jhonard Clarito then contributed 16 points apiece for San Juan which retained most of its championship core for its title defense. PBA: Red-hot KaTropa go for solo lead in Commissioner’s Cup

TNT will look to take over as the no. 1 team in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Saturday. The KaTropa enter their 4:30 p.m. showdown against the Meralco Bolts as one of the hotter teams in the league with a three-game winning streak. With a 5-1 record, TNT is tied with idle Northport for the lead but a win against the Bolts allows the KaTropa to grab solo first in the mid-season joust. Meanwhile, the Bolts are at at even 3-3 after a recent two-game run came to an end at the hands of the Alaska Aces last week. The main game of the Petron Saturday Special is the 6:45 p.m. meeting between Alaska and Phoenix. Also armed with a three-game winning streak, the Aces are at fourth place with a 4-2 mark while the Fuel Masters are at 1-3 with a three-game losing skid.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Australia beats Brazil 3-2 with aid from an own goal

MONTPELLIER, France (AP) — An own goal gave Australia a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Brazil at the Women's World Cup, even after Marta added a record 16th career tournament goal. Marta, who sat out Brazil's opening game with a left thigh injury, became the first player to score in five different World Cups when she converted a penalty kick in the 27th minute of Thursday's game. Cristiane scored a header to put the Brazilians up 2-0. Caitlin Foord scored before the break to pull Australia within one. Chloe Logarzo's shot from distance in the 58th minute tied it and then Australia went ahead on the own goal, an error by Monica that snapped the stalemate in the 66th minute. Sam Kerr appeared to be offside but the goal was awarded after video review, and the Brazilians fumed. Australia, just the second team to win a World Cup match after going down two goals, needed a good game after dropping its opener 2-1 to Italy. Brazil won its tournament opener against Jamaica 3-0 on Cristiane's hat trick. It was the first loss in the group stage for the Brazilians since 1995, snapping a 16-match unbeaten streak. Brazil's Formiga, the oldest player in the tournament at 41, collected her second yellow card during the match. She will have to sit out the final group match against Italy. American Abby Wambach and Germany's Birgit Prinz rank behind Marta on the World Cup goals list with 14 each......»»

MPBL: Helterbrand never says die as career continues now in Imus Bandera

Jayjay Helterbrand was nearly two years into his retirement from professional basketball. The keyword being, was. That's because the Ginebra franchise icon has decided to play ball once more, this time in the MPBL with the Imus Bandera. And those about to enjoy watching "The Fast" back in the basketball court can thank the UNTV Legends Cup for this development. "I was playing with the legends group and I think that got my juices flowing," he told reporters in the MPBL Lakan Cup's opener last Wednesday. "That made me think I can play again." Indeed, judging from what he has been doing with the Ginebra Legends, Helterbrand still got game. In fact, he even put up a triple-double in their rivalry game opposite the Purefoods Legends last February. The now 42-year-old made it clear, however, that he has never lost his love for basketball. "Actually, I still got the passion for the game. Just to make it simple and sweet, I just miss playing," he said, talking about his decision to suit up yet again. Helterbrand also made it clear, though, that of course, he is far from 100 percent just yet. "As of now, I've only had one practice under my belt. This ain't no joke because you're going to be running up and down the court so there's no way I can be able to keep up after two years," he shared. He then continued, "But it's a long season so hopefully, I can get in shape slowly and surely." Yes, make no mistake about it, the Gin Kings' legend is in Imus to stay. "I'm here for the long haul," he expressed. And he is nothing but grateful for the Cavite-based team for this brand new opportunity. "They were all very supportive. They welcomed me with arms wide open so I'm really excited to play and be part of Imus," he said. For that, Helterbrand promises to do nothing but repay the Bandera's trust. "I told the other guys that I'm just here to help the younger guys. I just want to be a good example to them and guide them," he said. He then continued, "Whatever I can add on the court itself is just a bonus." Jayjay Helterbrands makes his MPBL debut later at 9:00 p.m. against the Caloocan Supremos. Kapamilyas all over the world will be able to witness it on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, and iWant. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

PVL: Angels secure at least a playoff for semis spot

Unbeaten PetroGazz picked up from where it left off in the first round as the Angels secured at least a playoff for a Final Four seat after taking down BanKo, 25-23, 25-11, 22-25, 25-20, on Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. The Angels extended their winning streak to six straight – albeit dropping a set for the first time in the import-laden conference – to put a foot inside the semifinals. PetroGazz can formally clinch a Final Four slot with another victory. Imports Wilma Salas of Cuba and American Janisa Johnson carried the Angels to an elims sweep the Perlas Spikers, who showed grit despite playing with an all-Filipino lineup for most of the match with reinforcements American Kia Bright and Yasimin Yildirim logging in limited minutes. Salas finished with a personal league-best 37 points built on 35 attacks and two kill blocks while adding 13 excellent receptions for the Angels. Johnson added 24 markers with all but one coming off spikes laced with 16 digs and 13 excellent receptions for PetroGazz, which punished the Perlas Spikers with 70 attack points with nine kill blocks. Jeanette Panaga had nine markers while Cherry Nunag and Cai Baloaloa combined for 10 points for Angels. BanKo pulled a surprise in the third set as they stunned the Angels early on to build a 15-5 cushion. PetroGazz rallied for a final push in the frame as the Angels saved a set point, 24-22, off a Salas attack but setter Djanel Cheng served short in the next play to surrender the frame. The Perlas Spikers caught PetroGazz off-guard in the opening frame with veterans Nicole Tiamzon, Dzi Gervacio and Sue Roces leading the way to take a 22-17 lead only to see the Angels close it out with an 8-1 blitz. PetroGazz controlled the second frame to cruise to a 2-0 match lead.     The Perlas Spikers suffered their second straight loss for a 2-4 win-loss slate. Tiamzon had 20 points off 16 spikes, three aces and a kill block with 17 digs while Gervacio and Kathy Bersola finished with 13 and nine points, respectively, for BanKo. Yildirim had three points while Bright played for only two sets with only one point under her name for the Perlas Spikers.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
