Makati cruises to eighth win in a row in MPBL

Makati kept its streak going and notched its eighth straight win in its last elimination game of the year in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup at the Batangas City Coliseum last Wednesday.   The Super Crunch outplayed the Pasay Voyagers, 67-59, to fortify their chances of moving up further in this tournament. After picking up their 14th win in 18 games, the Super Crunch are now within striking distance of the third-seed San Juan Knights in the northern division. But host team Batangas City was not as successful in extending its winning run, this after Manila played the spoiler’s role.     The Stars turned to Chris Bitoon to lead them in a thrilling 80-79 win over the Athletics that stopped the host team’s seven-game win run.   Bitoon finished with 13 points, including the go-ahead layup that propelled Manilato its 15th win in 18 games, just a game behind tournament leader Bataan Risers.   The loss was the seventh in 18 games for the Athletics.     Bitoon, the spitfire guard, delivered the crucial basket in the last five seconds of the game as his getaway layup proved to be the difference..   The Athletics had one last chance of salvaging a win, but Jhaymo Eguilos missed a jumper, allowing the Stars to snatch their third straight since losing to San Juan......»»

Bataan stays hot in MPBL with 12th win in a row

Bataan and Bulacan carved out contrasting victories last Monday to bolster their respective chances in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup   The Risers of Bataan continued their sizzling performance and their latest win – a 108-77 dumping of the Basilan Steel – extended their winning streak to 12 games. They improved their win-loss record to 12-1, the best in the 26-team cast. But for head coach Jojo Lastimosa, their latest win gave his squad a glimpse of what they can do when playing their A-game. The team posted a franchise best in points while also dealing the Steel their worst beating since joining in the league. Basilan absorbed its fourth straight beating and fell to a 4-9 card. Four players finished in double figures for the Risers led by Byron Villarias with 23 points. Fellow ex-pro Pamboy Raymundo added 15 while former PBA scoring champion Gary David chipped in 14 and Vince Tolentino contributed 10 in a display of balance firepower by Bataan. Bulacan, on the other hand, had to grind it out before arresting an alarming skid and winning over host team Pampanga, 67-65. The Kuyas turned to JR Taganas and Jorey Napoles who delivered the crucial baskets that ensured the team’s ninth win in 14 games that also snapped back-to-back setbacks. Taganas, the tournament’s leading rebounder, picked up a loose ball and made a basket with less than a minute to go and shoved the Kuyas ahead, 65-61. After Levi Hernandez put the Lanterns within striking distance with a short stab, Napoles beat his man to the basket and scored for a 67-63 lead with 37 seconds left......»»

Bataan too hot to handle in its 10 straight MPBL win

There's no stopping Bataan as it continues to rise in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Anta-Datu Cup as they were able to extend their winning run to 10 here at the People's Center in Bataan last Tuesday. Pamboy Raymundo and John Villarias combined for 24 points to power the Risers to their 10th win in 11 games, beating Bulacan in a low-scoring affair, 63-49. It was the third home win of the Risers, whose 10-game winning streak is the longest in the tournament. Bataan kept a hold of the solo lead in this tournament and bolstered its chances heading to the halfway stretch of the elimination round. The Risers were able to make stops when needed as they kept the Kuyas out of their comfort zone, proof of that was Bulacan's paltry shooting from the field. The Kuyas were held to only 28-percent shooting from the field (20-of-70) with only Hans Thiele ending up in double figures, resulting to the team's  fourth loss in 12 games. Bataan didn't shoot better either, hitting only 38=percent from the field (27-of-71), but got 35 points off the bench, 11 more than its counterpart. Earlier, Parañaque outplayed Rizal, 59-47, as the Patriots notched their seventh win in 13 games.  They were able to take advantage of the error-prone Crusaders as the team from the east committed 23 errors. That resulted to Parañaque to score 21 points off its rival's miscues......»»

MPBL: Risers steal spotlight from Capitals for fifth straight W

Bataan began the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League with a loss. Since then, however, they have been rolling. The Risers registered their fifth consecutive victory, this one coming at the expense of home team Quezon City, 101-68, last Wednesday at the Blue Eagle Gym in Katipunan Avenue. Gary David turned back the clock for a vintage performance of 21 points in 72 percent shooting. “El Granada” was on fire and his teammates only followed suit as they scored no less than 23 points in each quarter. He was backstopped by youngsters Jeepy Faundo and J-Jay Alejandro who had 12 and 10 markers, respectively, as Bataan rose to 5-1. Janus Collado topped the scoring column for the Capitals with 15 points. With a non-existent defense, however, they lost for the fourth time out of five games. Meanwhile, Zamboanga also stretched its streak by dispatching Navotas, 89-78. As always, Reed Juntilla showed the way with a 29-point, 11-rebound double-double as the Valientes improves to 4-2. Bataan keeps rising in MPBL

The Bataan Risers are now beginning to pick up their second wind in the 2018-2019 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup, this after the squad posted yet another tough win last Monday at the packed People’s Center in Bataan.   Bataan has added Muntinlupa to its growing list of victims as the up and coming squad repulsed last season’s runner-up, 67-63, to continue staying on top of the standings. The win enabled the  Risers to improve their win-loss record to 19-2. They are the No.1 seed in the tough northern division and are already assured of a top four berth and home court advantage in the playoffs.   But head coach Jojo Lastimosa would rather want to see his team staying on top for a better reason.   “If we get the No.1 spot, we’ll be having home court advantage in each round in the playoffs,” added Lastimosa. “We want to win our remaining games as we want to carry the momentum all the way to the playoffs.”   Beating Muntinlupa was a great test and the Risers were able to live up to the challenge posed by the formidable Cagers team that battled the host squad toe-to-toe.   The biggest play of the night happened in the closing seconds of the game made possible by prized guard Yvan Ludovice.   Picked up in the free agency after being released by Pasay, Ludovice challenged the defense of Muntinlupa then fed Rob Celiz for the marginal basket that ensured the Risers’ victory.   Muntinlupa suffered its third straight loss and fell to a 12-8 card. It’s the second time this season that the Cagers have lost three in a row and the latest setback put them just half a game ahead of closest pursuer Batangas City Athletics in the southern division.   Earlier, Laguna turned to Ralph Olivarez and frontliner Raymond Ilagan as the Heroes outplayed the Valenzuela Classic, 74-66, in    Olivarez finished with 20 points while Ilagan had a double-double performance of 15 points and 17 rebounds as the Heroes stayed in the hunt for a playoff berth by improving their win-loss record to 10-13, good for eighth spot.   The loss was a crucial one for Valenzuela, which dropped to an 8-14 record and fell to 11th spot. Its chances of catching a top eight berth has been reduced from slim to none at all. .....»»

Makati s MPBL win run goes on; QC gets payback on Manda

Makati picked up where it left off in the latter stretch of 2018 and started the new year on a winning note to extend their streak in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup. The Super Crunch outlasted the Pasig Pirates, 76-71, to sustain their winning run and notch their ninth straight victory.  With the win, Makati has improved its win-loss record to 15-4 to climb into a tie for third spot with idle San Juan in the tough northern division of this tournament. But in picking up their latest win, the Super Crunch had to endure a hard test and head coach Cholo Villanueva admitted his squad’s struggles. “You can see that we’re a bit sluggish. This is our first game in three weeks and most of the players are still on a vacation mode,” added Villanueva. “But this win means a lot because we were able to climb to third spot and has a chance to improve further.” Leading the way for the Super Crunch was veteran Mark Isip, who knocked in 11 of his 19 points in the opening quarter to keep a hold of the rest of the team. The Super Crunch extended their winning run to nine a row and they are the second hottest team in the tournament after the Tigers of Davao Occidental, who are having a 12-game winning streak. Joseph Sedurifa added 12 while Jeckster Apinan and John Rey Villanueva had 11 apiece for Makati. Pasig absorbed its 15th loss in 18 games to stay at the cellar. Earlier, Quezon City settled an old score with Mandaluyong by winning, 86-76, in the other game. It was a rematch of the game that was ordered to be replayed after the Capitals filed a protest on the El Tigre for fielding in Ronjay Buenafe, who was ineligible to play......»»

Road to 2020 Olympics via 3x3 basketball now underway

The Philippines' road to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics via 3x3 basketball has started. National team backer Chooks-to-Go, in partnership with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, is opening up the first-ever 3x3 league in the Philippines order to help the country pile up points in FIBA competitions. The end result is to have more than enought points to qualify for the Summer Games in 2020. "We are very excited with this 3x3 league backed by Chooks-to-Go. Ito yung unang pagkakataon natin na magkaroon ng liga for 3x3," said league commissioner Eric Altamirano Friday. "Though the point system of FIBA is complicated, it all starts by having a league," added Altamirano. "Then when we have a league, we can now join the World Tour which comprises of forty events. That's where all the points come from." To get the league starting, the first season will have 12 teams in total from MPBL club teams Manila Stars, Go for Gold-San Juan Knights, Bataan Risers, Bacoor Strikers, Valenzuela Classic, Marikina Shoemasters and Bulacan Kuyas. Also committing are the Zark's Burger-backed Quezon City, the Dondon Hontiveros-owned Cebu, and a team from from Davao Occidental and Pasig. The opening season will have six total legs to be played mainly in SM Malls. Each leg will have its own champion and after those six, the 12 teams will be ranked according to points and the top 4 are seeded to the quarterfinals. The rest will then figure in a knockout round. The champion team will win a nice P1,000,000 cash prize and will be given priority for the FIBA tour events abroad to represent the country. Pre-season starts January 14 at Ynares Pasig and in order to help the country earn points, Chooks-to-Go will also sponsore a grassroots program in Cebu early next year.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
