Turkish city centenary holds special significance
Standing at the foot of the cliff overlooking Kemaliye, the golden statue of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the father of the nation, evokes the glorious past of this small town in eastern Turkey. Ataturk rewarded the loyalty of the town, nestled between the mountains and the sources of the Euphrates, by giving it his name ahead of creating the Turkish republic out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire 100 years ago. “The whole country would have wanted to bear his name but he would never have accepted!” said retired hotelier Haci Omer Yalcinkayalar, referring to the modest nature of Ataturk, who will be celebrated on the nation’s anniversary on 29 October. General Mustafa Kemal, hero of the Dardanelles war against the Allies, in 1919 began confronting the Westerners who occupied the dismembered empire to found the independent nation he longed for. His forces found themselves nearing disaster at the gates of Ankara in 1921 when he received a telegram from Egin, a trading town at the crossroads of Anatolia and the Caucasus, with an Armenian population. The telegram read: “Dear Pasha, we have 500 horsemen ready to leave at your command,” recounted Yalcinkayalar. Situated on the caravan routes heading towards Baghdad, Iran and Georgia, the town was prosperous. This is evidenced by the persisting stone and wooden houses that were built along the steep slopes of the mountainside, which town authorities requested to be classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. The entire district had around 20,000 inhabitants including some 6,000 in Kemaliye itself in Ataturk’s time, compared with 1,500 residents today. “In the end, they didn’t have to do it,” Yalcinkayalar said of the offer to send horsemen. But Ataturk did not forget the gesture and, a year later, he wrote to the Egin municipal council to offer his name. “It was given to us as a gift,” said the 73-year-old who has devoted his retirement to his town’s history. “It honors us: With the republic, we joined the civilized world.” Kemaliye has been home to many celebrations including concerts, football tournaments and banquets on every October 29 since the birth of the republic in 1923. In Guzide Tufekci’s family, the story is passed down with enthusiasm: The 60-year-old former literature professor, an enthusiastic Kemalist, recalled what Turkish women owe to Ataturk and the republic. “He opened the way for enlightened Turkish women, intellectuals, to have access to education, to have a profession. We’re proud of him,” she said. Facing a small train station that has served Kemaliye since 1938, a modest cafe is decorated like a museum. Erdal Erdurk, 59, has hung portraits of Ataturk on all the walls — in color, in black and white, in a soldier’s uniform, in a tuxedo or wearing his Astrakhan hat — and hung a huge red flag bearing his image above the entrance. Red Velvet’s third full-length album out in November
Red Velvet is set to release its highly anticipated third full-length album in November, as confirmed by the group’s agency SM Entertainment on 18 September. “Red Velvet is preparing a full-length studio album with the goal of [releasing the album in] November,” the agency said. The album would mark the group’s first full-length album in six years following the release of the critically acclaimed and chart-topping Perfect Velvet in November 2016. Red Velvet was consistent last year in releasing hit after hit. The phenomenal South Korean girl group previously released two mini albums with The ReVe Festival 2022 — Feel My Rhythm in March 2022 and The ReVe Festival 2022 — Birthday in November 2022. The group also released its first Japanese studio album, Bloom, in April 2022. Recently, Irene, the group’s leader and main rapper, was rumored to be not renewing her contract with SM Entertainment. However, no official confirmation followed the rumor. Another member, Yeri, had previously hinted that they were preparing to release a new album during the group’s anniversary live broadcast in August. Red Velvet is a wildly popular South Korean girl group composed of Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri. The quintet is recognized for unique, distinctive concepts and enchanting music that has captured the attention of a global audience and a massive fandom called ReVeluv. Debuting in 2014, the group has given birth to such hits as “Happiness,” “Bad Boy,” “Psycho,” “Feel My Rhythm” and more. Mediatrix controversy
Author’s note: In the last column, I wrote that the 1951 Pius XII decree that said the Mediatrix apparitions had “no supernatural character or origin” is not binding because it was never promulgated officially. Pope Francis recently appointed a new Prefect of the Dicastery, Cardinal-to-be Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez, SJ. Like his predecessor, Fernandez is a Jesuit and an Argentinian. He is the “theological alter ego” of Pope Francis. How will controversial Archbishop Fernandez handle the 70-year-old Mediatrix issue? Will the current Dicastery, which is vehemently anti-Mediatrix, under the helm of Archbishop Fernandez tone down its stance? As a background, there was a decree of the Dicastery but not of Pope Pius XII. The Dicastery of 1951, whose members have died, claimed Pope Pius XII directly approved its decision (not to recognize the Mediatrix apparitions), but it was never formally entered into the Acta Apostolicae Sedis, the official Vatican publication, a requirement of Canon Law for it to take effect. What are the implications if the 1951 Pius XII decree is in truth non-existent? Under the domino principle, this implies that technically all subsequent declarations and orders of the Dicastery for 70 long years are also not binding, including the latest, wherein Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera was ordered by the Dicastery to ban all celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the Mediatrix apparitions. However, the Dicastery never authenticated the Mediatrix apparitions, so the apparition celebrations are rightfully banned. But there is a contradiction that must be resolved — since the original 1951 Pius XII decree is in question. The members of the Dicastery in 1951 were caught in a lie because then apostolic administrator Bishop Rufino Santos stated in his decree of 12 April 1951 that he was still awaiting the Vatican decision regarding Lipa — when the Dicastery reported in its Protocol 226/1949 that a decision had been made, contradicting Bishop Santos. Archbishop Fernandez has to resolve this issue because the evangelization of Asia, which is the focus of Pope Francis, is at stake. Pope Francis looks to the Philippines, the only Christian nation in Asia, as the launch pad for the evangelization of Asia and the “conversion” of China. Conversion means stopping the persecution and massacre of Christians in China, permitting churches there to open, reuniting the Underground Church (who are the target of assassinations) and the Vatican-led Church, and finally, changing China’s belligerence to benevolence in the South China Sea to prevent a full-blown US-China confrontation. The Virgin can bring peace to Asia better than any military solutions. A well-publicized message of Our Lady Mediatrix of All Grace was a warning about China: “Pray hard for China’s dream is to invade the whole world. The Philippines is one of its favorites.” (17 October 1949). There is a Mediatrix shrine in a chapel in a small village near Nanjing that was built by Metropolitan Bank when it was commissioned by the Chinese government to develop two villages. This “foothold” in China is evidence the Virgin Mediatrix is fulfilling her mission of evangelization and conversion. Archbishop Fernandez and Pope Francis must be informed of the history of the Mediatrix to sharpen their perspectives on its geopolitical ramifications. The continued suppression of Mediatrix devotion and of the entire Philippine Church may hamper the Church’s efforts to evangelize Asia. In truth, Satan is scared of the Mediatrix, that is why, in his panic, he tortured Mediatrix visionary Sr. Teresing Castillo, as she wrote in her second diary that the Vatican failed to destroy but which is now available on the Internet. Is Satan behind the suppression of the Mediatrix by using Cardinals in the Vatican without them knowing it? For centuries, Satan has been penetrating the sacred halls of the Vatican and using the Cardinals without their being aware of it. That Satan works in the Vatican is nothing new. Historically, the Spanish Inquisition in the Middle Ages beheaded on mere suspicion about a thousand “heretics.” The ongoing “apostasy” (civil war) within the Vatican, which Fatima prophesied, is another sign of Satan’s works. It is thus in the interest of the Vatican to consider the Marian evangelization that it is suppressing — to have a change of heart. In the end, the Virgin will triumph over the Vatican, if need be, as revealed in the Bible. The Lord said, “I will put enmity between you (Satan) and the Woman (Mary), and between your offspring (demons) and hers (Jesus). Her offspring will crush your head and you will bruise His heel.” Genesis 3:15. “A huge red dragon stood before the Woman about to give birth, to devour her Child. She gave birth to a Son destined to rule all nations. In utter rage, the serpent waged war against the rest of her offspring, those bearing witness to the Son born of Her womb.” Revelation 11:1-17 (excerpts). *** eastwindreplyctr@gmail.com The post Mediatrix controversy appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

‘Intimate Audrey:’ An up-close and personal look at a Hollywood and fashion icon
First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos led the ribbon cutting ceremony on 31 July to formally open the first Asian stop of Intimate Audrey, the bespoke exhibition on the life of the late Hollywood and fashion icon Audrey Hepburn that was created by her son Sean Hepburn Ferrer. Ferrer himself attended the ceremony, with his daughter Emma in tow, held at The Museum at S Maison, located at the Mall of Asia complex in Pasay City, where the exhibition will run until 29 October 2023. The exhibition was brought to the Philippines through the partnership of FashX, a fashion trade and licensing company, and SM Supermalls, as represented at the opening by Hans Sy and Teresita Sy-Coson. It first opened on 4 May 2019 in time for Hepburn’s 90th birth anniversary and held in her birthplace in Brussels, the capital city of Belgium. It then made a stop in what she considered her home country, Netherlands, specifically in its capital, Amsterdam, where she spent much of her youth during the war years. The exhibition features over 800 photographs, memorabilia, fashion items, drawings, writings, movie posters and trophies that were thoughtfully curated and laid out around the 730-square meter space at The Museum at S Maison. There are also videos playing in strategic spots to highlight specific chapters in her life and at the screening room to show clips from her timeless movies Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, to name a few. At the end of the exhibition — which covers Hepburn’s life from childhood to ballet training to conquering Hollywood, getting married, becoming a mother and finally doing humanitarian work as UNICEF ambassador — there’s a fashion tribute put up especially for the Manila stop. Titled Audrey: An Homage from Filipino Fashion, this section highlights the works of celebrated Filipino designers who got inspiration from Hepburn’s films and documentaries on her life. The participating designers include Pepito Albert, Ivar Aseron, Vic Barba, Mike Dela Rosa, JC Buendia, Len Cabili, Auggie Cordero, Rhett Eala, Jun Escario, Ben Farrales, Cesar Gaupo, Rajo Laurel, Jojie Lloren, Dennis Lustico, Randy Ortiz, Frederick Peralta, Puey Quiñones, Patrice Ramos-Diaz, Philip Rodriguez, Cary Santiago and National Artists Salvacion Lim-Higgins and Ramon Valera. Brazil’s Embraer to build flying taxis in Sao Paulo
Brazilian aeronautics company Embraer and its urban mobility subsidiary Eve said Thursday they would build a factory near Sao Paulo to manufacture electric flying taxis that could take off as soon as 2026. The factory for "electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft" or eVTOL, will be built in the city of Taubate in Sao Paulo state, the companies announced on the 150th anniversary of the birth of Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont. Taubate is a city of some 310,000 inhabitants about 140 kilometers (87 miles) from Sao Paulo, Brazil's economic capital. The drone-like passenger vehicles, which resemble small helicopters, will initially be used in taxi fleets, with the first flights costing about $50 to $100 per person per trip, company sources told AFP. The initial flights will have a pilot, but a later rollout of self-piloted vehicles is also on the cards. Each eVTOL can carry four to six passengers. The vehicles will be 100 percent electric, allowing for emissions-free flights. Embraer said it has already received orders for 2,850 eVTOLs worth about $1.5 billion from 28 clients in several countries, including helicopter operators, airlines and flight-sharing platforms. Listed on the New York Stock Exchange, Eve Air Mobility, which has not yet reported revenues, recorded a net loss of $25 million in the first quarter of 2023, due in particular to expenses related to research and development of the eVTOL. Sao Paulo, a megalopolis of 11.5 million people with monster traffic jams, has the largest helicopter fleet in the world. "We believe in the enormous potential of the global Urban Air Mobility market," Embraer president Francisco Gomes Neto said in a statement. Added Eve vice president of program management and operation, Alice Altissimo: "We are equipped to efficiently scale the production volume sustainably to meet the demands of a growing market." Maharlika bill in Marcos’ hands
Malacañang on Wednesday confirmed that the controversial Maharlika Investment Fund Bill has already been transmitted to the Office of the President. The Palace made the confirmation through Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil after the office of Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said on Tuesday that House Speaker Martin Romualdez signed the final version of the MIF bill. Zubiri’s office added that the MIF bill was transmitted to the OP on Tuesday through the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office. “Maharlika bill received yesterday by Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Legal Affairs,” said Garafil in a Viber message to reporters. The bill now solely requires President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s endorsement and signature to be enacted as a law. However, Garafil said there is no announced date yet for Marcos to sign the Maharlika bill. To recall, Marcos mentioned last month that he would “immediately sign” the bill once he received it, but he clarified that he would still need to review the changes made in the Congress’ approved version of the proposed sovereign fund, which he said should be independent of the government to become successful. In an interview following the 85th anniversary of the Securities and Exchange Commission last month, Marcos underscored that the MIF would be “independent” from the government once established through law. “Even I proposed to the House was to remove the president as part of the board, to remove Central Bank chairman, to remove the Department of Finance because it has to operate as an independent fund, well managed professionally,” Marcos said. The MIF bill introduces a sovereign wealth fund that aims to invest in various assets such as foreign currencies, fixed-income instruments, domestic and international corporate bonds, commercial real estate, and infrastructure projects. This initiative is intended to boost economic development. The bill calls for the creation of the Maharlika Investment Corporation, which will serve as the exclusive entity responsible for mobilizing and utilizing the MIF for investment transactions, with the goal of generating optimal returns on investments. According to the proposed legislation, the MIF will not utilize the funds of the Social Security System, Government Service Insurance System, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or Home Development Mutual Fund. PBBM on 125th Phl Independence Day: Unite, protect our freedom
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Monday called for unity among Filipinos in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence. In a statement, Marcos said that the Filipino people, while incredibly diverse in culture, have constantly displayed solidarity in fighting for freedom across the archipelago and across generations. “In honor of our ancestors' valiant displays of nationalism, I join our people within our shores and all over the globe in commemorating the 125th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence," Marcos said. "This historic day confirmed what our forebears have religiously kept in their hearts: That we are the inheritors of the glorious heroism and nobility that our ancestors have demonstrated throughout our long and storied history," he added. Marcos said that the flag, national march, and proclamation in writing affirmed the victory that was brought forth by battles won and sacrifices made, which gave the mighty Filipinos the guidance and confidence to move forward united. He added that the Filipinos remained defiant with the new oppressors and challenges, which affirmed that it is in the Filipinos’ core to defend what is ours. "And with all that this occasion symbolizes and entails, we understand better now that liberty will not flourish on its own; freedom will not materialize unless it is declared boldly, believed sincerely, and demonstrated passionately," Marcos said. Marcos then challenged each Filipino to assert their liberty day by day. "In everything we do, let us pursue excellence and integrity with the knowledge that we are living out the visions our predecessors held on to and the comfort they toiled for," he said. "As we look towards a bright future, I urge all of us to take ownership of the fight that gave birth to the independence of our noble and indomitable republic," Marcos added.
