Face first for OFW entrepreneur
Self-made entrepreneur Marzen Salazar remembers the many moments when she would catch her grandmother in front of the mirror, filling in her eyebrows faded by time. Humans are said to be capable of nearly 10,000 facial expressions. The slightest twitch of facial muscle, the direction of the eye, and the movement of eyebrows all mean a plethora of emotions — the non-verbal cues that make up the unspoken daily chatter. Yet as one grows old, it becomes more difficult to do so; the muscles loosen, but most significantly, the eyebrows thin along with the lashes. “My grandmother always draws about her eyebrows. She would try it but (I) would never be satisfied,” remembers Marzen. “When I was growing up in the '90s, eyebrow tattooing was a popular solution to the fading of the brow for the elderly and people with thin strokes — but even tattoos have their limits.” Today, as Marzen recalls her time growing up in Laguna with her lola, Marzen is gradually and decisively building her own business to provide a better solution for eyebrows, lashes, and other facial care woes. In 2020 during the beginning of the pandemic, Marzen boldly launched Miss Derm — a clinic specializing in eyebrows, lashes, and facial treatment services, including microblading. A relatively new technology for Filipinos, microblading uses small needles to create soft and subtle hair-like strokes and deposit pigment on the skin. It is a form of cosmetic tattooing but, unlike the traditional tattoo that embeds pigment deep into the skin, microblading only injects pigment superficially on the body and thus is only semi-permanent. At Miss Derm, microblading is only done by certified microblading artists. Artists undergo intensive training to provide the highest level of quality and care for customers. More than just a business From one clinic in Makati, Marzen expanded Miss Derm to two more locations: Las Pinas and Quezon City —one additional business address each year. Despite travel restrictions, Miss Derm’s number of patrons have grown through word of mouth, attracted by the quality of premium services to help customers with their facial care needs. “I’ve always been motivated by the fact that the services we do at Miss Derm directly affect our customers’ disposition. If eyes are the windows to the soul, eyebrows and lashes are the frames that help define what you want to express and how you want to be seen. We want to help our customers increase their confidence and wear a brighter face every day,” says Marzen, a former wedding photographer-turned communications manager in Oman. Aside from its popular Elite Brows/Lips Package, Miss Derm offers a wide range of microblading, microshading, eyeliner and blading solutions. Customers will also find a menu of no-needle procedures, including Brow Lamination, Lash Lift, Lash Extensions, and HIFU Skin Tightening for the face, neck and the body. Miss Derm’s complete facial care and skincare solutions prove to be perfect for customers who desire convenience and a highly personalized level of care. At Miss Derm, artists converse with customers about their needs and suggest ways to achieve how they want to look. This level of service and hospitality is the product of Marzen’s entrepreneurial instincts, of putting customers at the heart of the process, and ensuring that employees are taken care of. Despite Marzen’s location in Oman, she has overseen the growth and initial success of Miss Derm with flying colors remotely, flying to Manila to visit the clinics when needed, but talking directly with her clients on a daily basis. “When customers chat on our social media channels for feedback or bookings, they’re likely talking to me. “I always had a passion for talking with customers, especially women. As a wedding photographer in Laguna and Oman, I deal with women on a regular basis. One should listen and be attentive; they know what they want. When you delight them with great service and you build a positive working relationship, they will come back for more and they will treat you like family,” says Marzen. ‘All eyes’ on Albert Kurniawan
June is a significant time for our friends in the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s Pride Month, an “annual celebration of the many contributions made by the LGBTQ+ community to history, society and cultures worldwide,” according to History.com. Among their many notable contributions to society is their artistry in cosmetics. Think Drag Queens like Drag Race Philippines winner Precious Paula Nicole, Drag Den Philippines winner NAIA Black and their show sisters who displayed their astonishing talents of shape-shifting through makeup. There are also members of the community who established their own makeup lines with inclusivity as one of its core values. Enter Albert Kurniawan, makeup artist and founder of Téviant. [caption id="attachment_139387" align="aligncenter" width="525"] KURNIAWAN applies brow tint to his model.[/caption] Born and raised in Indonesia, Albert flew to the Philippines 15 years ago in search of his purpose in life. And he found his purpose through makeup artistry. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most sought-after makeup artists in the country. However, it wasn’t a smooth journey at the beginning. Arriving in a country without knowing the language or knowing anyone was a struggle, but his peers welcomed him with open arms. Albert’s first brush with cosmetics started when he struggled to look for faux lashes that fit his taste. He took matters into his own hands when he visited a factory, hand-weaved his own sets and shared them with his co-makeup artists. It was a light bulb moment for him to put up his own business. While he slowly found success in his business, he felt something was still missing. “I was having an anxiety so I decided to take a break for a while,” he said. “I was in Milan having dinner when I saw a girl I used to work with. I didn’t remember her at first so she introduced herself to me and told me she follows me on Instagram. She then asked me why don’t I open my own makeup line,” Albert recounted. He continued: “I was on the other side of the globe, a stranger approached me and gave me an opportunity. She worked with a good factory and tried to put my name on the lineup of new clients.” Thus, the birth of Téviant in 2018. It was officially launched in 2019. The brand name was inspired by his mother Tevianty, whom he watched putting makeup on while growing up. Téviant’s products are the Multi-Glaze, a versatile and easy-to-use eyeshadow pen duo with two formulas that can help achieve subtle to full glam eyes; and the Brow Tint, a four-pronged, super fine eyebrow liner that creates hair-like strokes on the brows to produce a 3D microbladed look. [caption id="attachment_139388" align="aligncenter" width="525"] MULTI-GLAZE eyeshadow.[/caption] Aside from being a business, Téviant is also Albert’s love letter to the people who welcomed him in the Philippines. It’s also his way of empowering Filipinos “in all possible ways.” Each product is meticulously developed and made in Europe. Available in teviantbeauty.com, department store counters, Look branches, Lazada, Shopee, Zalora, BeautyMNL, Edamama and TikTok Shop. Start your self-love journey
I asked some of my closest friends about what their own definition of self-love is. For Jan, self-love is about “giving importance to one’s total well-being by constantly practicing self-care habits, particularly ensuring proper hygiene and grooming that will give you enough confidence to present yourself.” Maria, on the other hand, considers self-love as “taking care of yourself, your well-being and happiness.” She also likes doing facials “because it is therapeutic and makes me feel alive and confident.” [caption id="attachment_133792" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF pexels/antoni shkraba | LEARN to love yourself, one eyebrow at a time.[/caption] Finally, Moreen practices self-love by “engaging in activities that bring you joy… that nurtures your mind, body and soul,” as well as “cultivating a positive inner dialogue. It means replacing self-criticism and negative self-talk with self-encouragement and positive affirmations.” It really does pay to have a genuine kind of self-love. I say this because all of the aforementioned people are some of the most confident and self-assured individuals that I know. [caption id="attachment_133793" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF pexels/COTTONBRO STUDIO | NAIL care is joy.[/caption] I wasn’t one to really consider this act. I thought I was already loving myself because I’m happy and the people around me are happy as well. But really, life has a funny way of making us realize things. Now that I was forcefully schooled by life, I picked up a couple of things: (1) Self-love shouldn’t be solely based on other people’s emotions. Rather, it should be of your own. (2) It’s okay — it’s best, really — to put yourself first above everything else. (3) Be wary of false encouragements, especially from people you thought had your best interest in mind. (4) Don’t fall for the words and actions of people who will shame you for doing what you have to do in order to have peace of mind. With that, give yourself grace. We’ll get the hang of it eventually. [caption id="attachment_133794" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF pexels/GUSTAVO FRING | TAKE extra steps to treat your skin.[/caption] Pampering is self-love Jan, Maria and Moreen have one thing in common in their self-love practices: Pampering sessions. Whether it’s at home or at salons, making yourself feel good by getting facials, lash extensions and hair treatments, among others, is one way of showing yourself you are worth the effort. R2 Group established the Self Love Club where they encourage its patrons to go on a wellness journey to uplift themselves. They created the Self Love Club app where customers of Ohh La Lash, Nail-A-Holics, Hey Sugar, Happy Brows and Sports Barbers can avail services for less through deals and rewards or points that can be consumed at the aforementioned brands to lessen the weight on their wallets. It encourages others to invest in themselves and love themselves without stress and hassle. Download the Self Love Club app to start your self-love journey.
