Valenzuela City kicks off joint Christmas and 400th-anniversary celebration
Welcoming two momentous events in one, the City of Valenzuela held its annual “Tree of Hope” lighting ceremony at the Valenzuela City People’s Park on 30 September, an event graced by special guests Jose Mari Chan, Patrick Quiroz and Itchyworms. The ceremony also marked the beginning of the three-month-long celebration of the 400th founding anniversary of the city. The “Tree of Hope” lighting ceremony, a city tradition since2004, sees the lighting of a 50-foot Christmas tree and the installation of holiday decor to set the Christmas spirit early for Valenzuelanos. This year, the lighting ceremony is coupled with another historical commemoration — the kick-off celebration of the 400th founding anniversary of the City of Valenzuela. It is a modern Pinoy Christmas theme bridging the past and future. Mayor Wes Gatchalian was joined bythe CDO Foodsphere and SM Supermalls in lighting up the Tree of Hope this year. The city also welcomed PWD children as the primary beneficiaries of the event, along with students from PLV and VALPOLY. Singers from PLV performed Christmas carols, while the local government invited Christmas icon Jose Mari Chan to sing his signature song, “Christmas in Our Hearts”, while the Tree of Hope was lit amid fireworks. A colorful and dashing fountain display provided the finishing touches to the occasion. Multiple attractions in the city such as Valenzuela City Family Park, WES Arena, Fatima Avenue and Polo Family Park are also set to turn on their Christmas installations in the coming days. A post-lighting concert took place at the Valenzuela City Amphitheater where guests Patrick Quiroz and The Itchyworms livened up the crowd. The city's 400th founding anniversary celebration happens on 12 November, following Pueblo de Polo’s founding date of 12 November 1623. Back-to-back celebrations awaits the city with the Polo Fiesta and Casa de Polo inaugurations as two of the grand events slated for #Valenzuela400 this month. Other huge events unfolding in the following months include the Oktoberfest, Polo Fiesta activities, Mass at San Diego de Alcala Church, Casa de Polo blessing and inauguration, Industry Summit, Gawad Dr. Pio Valenzuela Awarding, Cultural Night, Valenzuela’s coffee-table book launch, a visit from delegates of Bucheon, South Korea, Food Fiesta, and a Christmas Bazaar. Over the past 400 years, the City of Valenzuela has never stopped evolving. From an agricultural provincial town of Polo, it has become a highly urbanized, industrial and livable city, recognized as one of the progressive urban centers in the country. Thus, reaching four centuries of growth and progress is a milestone worth celebrating for all Valenzuelanos, and an inspiration to continuously commemorate and honor the rich history that established the city. Friendship among nations
How important is the friendship between two countries? I guess it is the same as with two or more people. Every Filipino appreciates a friend, whether a compatriot or a foreigner. This is also common to the Chinese, which is why former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and five others were cited recently for bridging and advancing Philippine and China relations. Duterte and former Special Envoy of the President to China, Ambassador Carlos Chan, were hailed as “Hall of Fame” laureates for promoting Philippines-China understanding. The awarding ceremony held at the historic Manila Hotel on 8 June was attended by President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. The Award for Promoting Philippines-China Understanding, or APPCU, which honors individuals who advanced ties between the neighboring nations, creates awareness not only for Filipinos but other nationalities as well that both countries are on good terms contrary to what others may claim. APPCU organizers cited Duterte’s role in the “re-establishment of trust relations with China, which led to the stabilization of the South China Sea issues.” Other awardees were Rigoberto Tiglao, Dr. Jaime T. Cruz, Jose Ong Tajan and Regina Rosa D. Tecson. APPCU is “also recognized by other Asian leaders, allowing for the reopening of our fishermen’s access and the expansion of tourism, trade, employment, and international investments in the Philippines.” In addition, it acknowledged the Chinese help given to Filipino front liners with the early delivery of millions of vaccine doses to the Philippines during Duterte’s term. Duterte was represented by former Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and PDP Laban president and Palawan 2nd District Rep. Jose Alvarez. In his speech, Medialdea said, “It is indeed a great honor coming from this great organization whose main goal is to strengthen the relationship between (the Philippines and China).” “I am sure former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will always cherish this award with the thought that both countries must continue to move forward in order to achieve what is best for all its people,” he added. Association for Philippine-China Understanding chairman Raul Lambino said the award conferred on the six laureates was a celebration of their “invaluable contributions” that not only elevated bilateral relations between the two states but had also “sown the seeds of friendship that will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.” “In this increasingly interconnected world, building bridges between nations and fostering mutual understanding is paramount,” Lambino said. “The relationship between the Philippines and China has always held tremendous significance given our shared history, cultural exchanges, and ever-growing economic cooperation,” he added. For his part, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian said the world today is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century that call for solidarity among nations. “We firmly believe that upholding mutual respect and trust, cherishing good neighborliness and friendship, keeping the direction of our mutual understanding and mutual accommodation in settling our differences serve as the fundamental principles in our bilateral relations,” Huang said. “So long as the consensus between our two top leaders is implemented in real earnest and the above principles followed, we will be able to uplift China-Philippines relations to a new level, bring more benefits to our two peoples and contribute more positive energy to regional peace and stability,” he added. The APPCU organizers have the wisdom to hold such an activity that is not politically motivated but deeply rooted in their zeal for justice and peace to reign in the hearts of both Filipinos and Chinese. Gilas Women wary of Malaysia
Malaysia will be the biggest thorn in its path when Gilas Pilipinas Women squad shoots for its third straight gold medal in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games. Gilas coach Patrick Aquino admitted that they are now feeling the pressure of winning a SEA Games three-peat, especially now that the Malaysians are already in the thick of their preparation for their mission to reclaim the title. A 13-time gold medalist, Malaysia is serious in reclaiming the SEA Games glory. Since the inclusion of the event in 1977, the Malaysians have asserted their might in the same manner that the Filipinos dominated the men’s event with 18 gold medals. In the coming biennial meet in Phnom Penh, the Malaysians are training in Taiwan, where they are playing against top university squads, a strategy done by Aquino and the Gilas girls when they won the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Championship in 2016 in Malacca City in Malaysia. Headed by head coach Tarcy York, the Malaysian squad brought in 14 players composed of Yap Fook Yee, Pang Hui Pin, Chong Yin Yin, Magdalene Low Phey Chyl, Rajintiran Kalamaithi and Foo Suet Ying. Other members of the team include Hon Ai Wen, Toh Ke Hui, Tan Sin Jie, Saw Wei Yin, Carmen Chan, Tai Chia Qian, Chia Mun Yi and Lee Phei Ling. Two new additions in the coaching staff joined York in the Taiwan buildup: Tan Ee Shya, the head coach of the Selangor women’s team, and Adrian Wong, former assistant coach of the KL Dragons in the Asean Basketball League. The Malaysians went up against Jinou Girls High School, Pumen High School, Shih Hsin University, Nanhu High School, National Taiwan Normal University, Taiyuan and University of Taipei as they gear up their preparations for the biennial meet set from 5 to 17 May. “Malaysia and Indonesia went there in Taipei and competed against the teams that we faced seven years ago,” Aquino said, adding that winning the SEA Games gold medal is very important to the Malaysians. “That’s because Malaysia has a long running professional basketball league while, on the other hand, we don’t have a consistent basketball league program in the Philippines.” “Also, the women players in Malaysia are even more popular than their men counterparts. They’re more decorated than the men’s team because they’re the winningest team in the SEA Games.” The post Gilas Women wary of Malaysia appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Belga stars in OT as Rain or Shine continues good run inside bubble
Beau Belga delivered when it mattered most in the overtime period. (PBA Images) Beau Belga had the last laugh with a stirring performance Tuesday night as Rain or Shine grinded out an 85-82 overtime win over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center. Belga scored five of his 20 points in the five-minute extension, a follow-up after missing a layup and a three-pointer that gave the Elasto Painters an 83-78 lead, and added 10 rebounds and four assists as the Elasto Painters pulled out a win while handing the Kings a second straight loss following a 4-0 start. But Rain or Shine needed one lucky break to secure its fourth win in five games inside the bubble known as Smart Clark Giga City after Ginebra cut the deficit to 83-80. Jewel Ponferada retrieved the ball after Rey Nambatac slipped before hitting a running one-hander for his only points with five seconds to go to make it an 85-80 lead for the Elasto Painters. Rain or Shine bounced back after falling short against Alaska, 89-88, last week while needing an extra day of rest when Sunday’s game with Blackwater was cancelled due after one of the Elite’s players initially tested positive for COVID-19. No one motivated coming into the game more than Belga, who was out to prove something after seeing a social media comment earlier in the day. “May isang hater na binatikos ako sa social media na puro pananakit lang daw ginagawa ko sa PBA and I just to prove him wrong,” Belga said during a postgame interview on One Sports. Coach Caloy Garcia was also glad that Belga was not the only player to step up for the Elasto Painters. Mark Borboran scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds while James Yap earned a starting role and produced a season-high 13 points. Nambatac only had eight points, but produced one of the game’s biggest shot with a three-pointer that tied the knot at 76-all with 2.1 seconds to go in regulation. Kris Rosales also scored all of his eight points in the first quarter that saw Rain or Shine take a 24-15 lead and forced Ginebra to play catch up throughout. Ginebra had to slowly inch its way back from being down 39-24 in the second behind Stanley Pringle and Scottie Thompson. Pringle’s jumper put the Kings ahead, 74-73, with over two minutes remaining in the fourth before Borboran missed two free throws and Gabe Norwood muffing a medium-range jumper. LA Tenorio got fouled and made a pair of charities for a three-point Ginebra lead before Nambatac continued his knack to have the ball in the clutch with the game-tying triple on the next play. Thompson finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks and Pringle had 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists but Ginebra couldn’t recover from Sunday’s loss to sibling rival Magnolia. The scores: RAIN OR SHINE 85 — Belga 20, Borboran 13, Yap 12, Nambatac 8, Rosales 8, Onwubere 3, Norwood 3, Ponferada 2, Wong 0, Torres 0. GINEBRA 82 — Thompson 21, Pringle 20, Aguilar J. 13, Tenorio 10, Devance 6, Caperal 5, Mariano 3, Chan 2, Dillinger 2, Tolentino 0. Quarters: 24-15, 45-36, 61-57, 76-76 (Reg), 85-82 (OT)......»»
