Retamar shines as Pinoys notch first tune-up match win

Philippine national men’s volleyball team head coach Dante Alinsunurin stuck with his battle-tested players and an up-and-coming playmaker to carve out a morale-boosting win over Chiba Zelba, 27-29, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, on Sunday in a tune-up match at the Kelai Gakuen High School Gym. Setter Joshua Retamar worked wonders piloting the offense of the Nationals, who made great strides in their Japan training camp made possible by Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. and the Philippine Sports Commission as they build up for the 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila next month. The playmaker from National University made wingers Marck Espejo, Ranran Abdilla and skipper John Vic De Guzman look good, utilizing the firepower of the Nationals while Kim Malabunga, Francis Saura and liberos Jack Kalingking and Ricky Marcos, who rotated on floor defense, played their roles well for the team’s first win in four straight tune-up matches. “Nagdedepende kami talaga sa setter. Sinubukan ko lang talaga na mag-stick sa isang setter kasi based doon sa three games namin namomroblema kami sa blocking sa dulo,” said Alinsunurin. “Every time na lang maglalaro kami yun ang problema namin. Ngayon sabi ko mag-adjust tayo subukan natin si Owa kung pwede na si Owa tapos ayun nag-adjust.” The Filipinos showed great chemistry inside the court and their communication was key to their success. They left the gym with wide smiles on their faces knowing that they’re moving on the right track.   “Siyempre high na ang morale namin ngayon dahil nandito kami. Hindi kami na-zero ba, ang importante pa rin is yung nanalo kami,” said Alinsunurin. “Malaking bagay ito pagdating sa susunod namin na (tune-up) games at pagdating sa SEA Games na etong sitwasyon is nakapanalo kami sa Japan.”.....»»

PBA: KaTropa sorely miss Castro after losing another game

TNT is most definitely feeling the absence of Jayson Castro. In basically two games without their star point guard, the KaTropa have lost both games. TNT won seven straight with Castro leading the attack. As such, the KaTropa have lost grip of first place in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup, dropping to 7-2 for a share of second place with sister team Meralco. “Malaking bagay talaga, lalo na pagdating sa mga crunch time na ganun, dun mo mami-miss si kuya Jayson,” guard RR Pogoy said after TNT lost by three points to Ginebra Friday. “Pero ganun talaga eh, di naman natin control yan na ma-injure siya,” he added. Outy with a strained muscle, Castro is expected to return to TNT in time for the playoffs. The KaTropa clinched their spot weeks ago, and the only question now is what seed TNT is. If the playoffs start tomorrow, the flagship MVP team is still the no. 2 seed. With two games left in the elimination round, the KaTropa will need to recalibrate to maximize the current pieces they have available. “I think it’s just the guys’ understanding, the shots they’re going to get. That all changed [with Castro’s injury],” active consultant Mark Dickel said. “We desperately need his presence out there and it’s not easy for the other guys when they’ve been used to playing a certain role and now you’re asked to play a different role,” Dickel added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Desiderio proud UP’s ‘Atin ‘to’ spirit is alive and well in UAAP 82

The University of the Philippines is yet to have a double-digit margin of victory in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament. In their nine wins, the Fighting Maroons' biggest winning margin was six at the expense of Far Eastern University and University of the East. Even more, six of their wins have come by three points or less. Without a doubt, State U has found itself in more close contests than any other team in the tournament. And yet, again and again, they fought - and more often than not, they won. With that, it's safe to say that the battle cry Paul Desiderio breathed life into is alive and well - even as he is now making his alma mater proud with the Blackwater Elite in the PBA. "Oo. Kitang-kita mo pa rin yun sa kanila," he answered after being asked if he could still sense "Atin 'to" in this iteration of UP's men's basketball team. "Basta close games, hindi sila nagpapatalo, hindi sila sumusuko. Laban lang hanggang sa dulo." Of course, nobody would ever forget that it was behind Desiderio that the Fighting Maroons announced they are now a force to reckon with. With him leading the way, they ended a 21-year Final Four drought and then ended a 32-year Finals absence. Now, State U is in prime position to build on that momentum as it boasts of the second-seed and a twice-to-beat advantage for the first time in school history. "Malaking bagay na naabot ng UP yung no. 2 kasi dati, nasa baba lang kami, wala pang nanonood. Ngayon, kitang-kita mo yung suporta ng community," Desiderio said. He then continued, "Sobrang happy kami kasi talagang makikita mong umangat yung programa. Malaking credit yun kay Coach Bo para madala yung team sa back-to-back na Final Four." Still, the Diliman legend also reminded that the job is far from finished. "Kailangan nila, be more disciplined and mag-focus on their roles. Kailangan, yung eyes nila, nasa bigger picture," he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Pinay spikers prime up for Tsukuba showdown

Ces Molina uncorked 17 points to lead the Philippine national women’s volleyball team to a 25-12, 25-18, 25-18, victory over PSL Team Sparkle in the Philippine Superliga Super Cup at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan on Thursday. Molina displayed her all-around game with 12 kills, two kill blocks and two aces with 11 digs to lead the Nationals in their second straight win in the penultimate playdate of the pocket tournament put up to help the Pinay spikers in their preparation for the 30th Southeast Asian Games. Jovelyn Gonzaga had 13 markers while Eya Laure scored 12 for the Nationals, who missed the services of Kalei Mau because of a strained muscle. Head coach Shaq Delos Santos had the luxury of fielding his second unit led by Laure, Maddie Madayag, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Roselyn Doria and Mika Reyes for exposure    “I think siguro yung adjustment din nung second six namin, and then syempre alam naman namin na nandun pa rin sa process ng pagbuo ng team so good thing lang nakakapag-deliver kami nang maayos,” he said. Delos Santos hopes that the Nationals will sustain its momentum heading to its clash against Japanese team University of Tsukuba on Friday. “Good thing we have a chance to practice tomorrow morning. So kailangang panoorin muna namin yung team kasi meron naman kaming video nila dun sa last two games nila. And then aral lang especially yung service kasi nila, hard service talaga,” said Delos Santos. The Japanese squad defeated Team Shine, 25-10, 25-16, 25-16. Ami Yamashiro unleashed 17 points for the Japanese team. Moeka Kinoe had 12 points for Tsukuba while Kurumi Takama and Syuri Kurata had eight markers apiece. “Kailangan naming paghandaan mabuti. And I think best thing is ilaro lang namin kung ano talagang meron yung team namin and syempre kailangan ma-enjoy namin,” Delos Santos said. “Hopefully maipakita namin na medyo used na kami pag kalaban namin is Japan kasi galing kaming Japan, so malaking bagay yan na makakaharap nain sila. Good thing yung continuation ng ganyang klase ng kalaban, malaking bagay for us.”.....»»

PHI squad shows promise despite loss in first tune-up match

Philippine national men’s volleyball team head coach Dante Alinsunurin saw his wards yield to Saitama Azalea, 20-25, 23-25, 23-25, Thursday evening in their first tune-up match in Japan. But the mentor felt that his squad displayed a lot of promise and moving on the right direction in their build up for the 30th Southeast Asian Games.   “Ang laking bagay sa amin sabi ko nga e yung adjustment lang makita namin, yung nangyayari, yung sistema nila na-adopt namin,” said Alinsunurin after the game at the Ejimi Gym. The Nationals, who opened their 16-day training camp with morning workout before travelling on a 2-hour bus ride to the match venue, were plagued with errors but still gave the Division 2 club a good fight in front of good crowd. “Nandoon naman yung gusto naming mangyari kaya lang hindi naman medyo nabaguhan, yung sistema kasi nila talagang mabilis, yung adjustment (namin) mabagal,” Alinsunurin said of his wards, who shook of a sluggish start but still came up short. “Lumalabas pa rin ‘yung unforced errors namin like ‘yung service namin halos nag-error kami ng seven to eight points.” Power-hitters Marck Espejo and Ranran Abdilla tried to rally the Nationals, who gave the Japanese squad quite a scare in the last two sets only to bow down in the end.  “Masaya hindi naman basta-basta sila kalaban ayun nakadikit kami isa na rin yun sa magandang potential ng team na ito,” said Abdilla. “Kasi ang Japan isa sa pinakamagaling lalo na yung depensa nila nahirapan lang kami magadjust nung first two sets pero nung third set nakaadjust kami, kaya lang kulang pa rin.” The Filipinos will take on Tsukuba United on Friday. “Sana lang magtuloy-tuloy every time na sino yung makakaharap namin maka-adjust kami,” said Alinsunurin. “Kailangan naming mag-adjust, kailangan namin matuto, kailangan namin makakuha ng experience dito sinabi ko naman sa mga bata, 'pupunta tayo dito para maglaro or magsakripisyo sa lahat ng gagawin natin para sa SEA Games'.”      .....»»
