A new ‘Exorcist’ takes possession of North America box office
Fifty years after the original, newly released "The Exorcist: Believer" topped the North American box office this weekend with an estimated $27.2 million in ticket sales, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said Sunday. Analyst David A. Gross called that "a good opening for a horror sequel," the best of any of the "Exorcist" movies, despite what he said were poor reviews and lukewarm audience scores for Blumhouse and Universal's Halloween-timed film. Like the original, "Believer" features possessed victims convulsing, covered in sores, and speaking in tongues. It also has a decidedly interfaith exorcism. Leslie Odom Jr. and Ann Dowd star, with an appearance by Ellen Burstyn from the 1973 original. "Believer" was to have opened on Friday the 13th, but the studio moved up its release to avoid conflicting with the release that day of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," a concert film certain to generate big numbers, Variety reported. Last weekend's box office leader, Paramount's family-friendly "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie," slipped slightly to second, at $11.8 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period. The Paw Pups, using new superpowers as they fight to protect their city, are voiced by actors Taraji P. Henson, Chris Rock, Serena Williams, and McKenna Grace. In third, also down one spot, is Lionsgate's horror flick "Saw X," at $8.2 million. This latest in the "Saw" series, again with Tobin Bell as the infamous Jigsaw, has received strongly positive reviews. The fourth spot, down from third, went to 20th Century sci-fi thriller "The Creator," at $6.1 million. John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, and Allison Janney play humans in a world at war with artificial intelligence. Holding steady in fifth was Fathom Events' faith-based movie "The Blind," at $3.1 million. It portrays the real-life struggles of swamp-dwelling reality TV star Phil Robertson with addiction and romance. Rounding out the top 10 were: "A Haunting in Venice" ($2.7 million) "The Nun II" ($2.6 million) "Dumb Money" ($2.2 million) "The Equalizer 3" ($1.8 million) "Hocus Pocus: 30th Anniversary" ($1.5 million) The post A new ‘Exorcist’ takes possession of North America box office appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Iran women’s activist Narges Mohammadi wins peace Nobel
The Nobel Peace Prize was on Friday awarded to imprisoned rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi, honored for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran. Mohammadi's award comes after a wave of protests that swept Iran after the death in custody a year ago of a young Iranian Kurd, Mahsa Amini, arrested for violating Iran's strict dress rules for women. Mohammadi, a 51-year-old journalist and activist, has spent much of the past two decades in and out of jail for her campaign against the mandatory hijab for women and the death penalty. She is the vice-president of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre founded by Iranian human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi, herself a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2003. Mohammadi was honored "for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all," said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo. "Her brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs. Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes," Reiss-Andersen said in the jury's citation. Speaking to reporters after the announcement, she called for Mohammadi's release. "If the Iranian authorities make the right decision, they will release her. So she can be present to receive this honor, which is what we primarily hope for," she said. The recent protests in Iran "accelerated the process of realizing democracy, freedom, and equality in Iran," a process that is now "irreversible", Mohammadi told AFP last month in a letter written from her prison cell. She and three other women held with her at Tehran's Evin prison burned their hijabs to mark the anniversary of Amini's death on 16 September. Iran is ranked 143rd out of 146 countries on the World Economic Forum's gender equality ranking. Iranian authorities cracked down harshly on last year's "Woman, Life, Freedom" uprising. A total of 551 protesters, including 68 children and 49 women, were killed by security forces, according to Iran Human Rights, and thousands of others were arrested. The movement has since continued in other forms. In what would have been unthinkable a year ago, women now go out in public without the headscarf, in particular in Tehran and other big cities, despite the risks. Wearing the hijab is one of the pillars of the Islamic Republic. Authorities have stepped up controls, using surveillance cameras among other things, and have arrested actresses who post pictures of themselves on social media without the hijab. No prospect of freedom In September, Iran's conservative-dominated parliament announced heavier penalties for women who refuse to wear it. "This year's Peace Prize also recognizes the hundreds of thousands of people who in the preceding year have demonstrated against the theocratic regimes policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women," Reiss-Andersen said. Offenders will face heavy prison sentences if the "Hijab and Chastity" bill is approved by Iran's Guardian Council. Incarcerated this time since November 2021, Mohammadi has not seen her children, who live in France with her husband, for eight years. Considered a "prisoner of conscience" by Amnesty International, she told AFP in her letter that she had "almost no prospect of freedom." The prize comes on the 20th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Ebadi, who was honored "for her efforts for democracy and human rights", especially those of women and children. This year's prize also symbolically coincides with the 75th anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 2003, Ebadi defied conservative Iranians by refusing to wear the hijab when she received her prize in Oslo. If she remains behind bars, Mohammadi will not be able to make the trip to Oslo to receive her award, consisting of a diploma, a gold medal, and $1 million, at the annual prize ceremony on December 10. The Peace Prize has on several occasions honored jailed activists, including last year when it went to Ales Bialiatski of Belarus, whose prize was accepted by his wife, and Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo in 2010, whose chair remained empty. Lee Seung-gi declares ‘Manila is the best!’
South Korean actor-singer Lee Seung-gi brought happiness to his Filipino fans, collectively known as PH Airen, as he made their dreams come true during his ongoing 2023 Lee Seung-gi Tour (Boy Walks the Road — Chapter 2) Asian tour. The multi-hyphenate star reunited with his Pinoy fans on 27 May at the New Frontier Theater in Quezon City. It was his highly anticipated comeback event in Manila after a sold-out fan meeting in 2019. As the lights dimmed, Lee Seung-gi’s captivating presence filled the theater as he stepped into the spotlight. He donned a stylish blue suit. His first song, “The Dreamer’s Dream,” set the tone for an amazing night, which was then followed by heartfelt versions of the songs “Wind” and “Return.” The 36-year-old performer was overjoyed and couldn’t help but express his enthusiasm for the Philippines. “Kamusta kayo, na-miss ko kayo,” he greeted his fans. He also repeatedly emphasized that Manila holds a special place in his heart, saying “Manila is the best!” The versatile star also shared that he is now working on a new record to mark his 20th anniversary. “Next year, it will be my 20th anniversary,” said Lee Seung-gi. “For the anniversary album, I’ll be collaborating with many artists — junior and senior. Please expect a lot from it. After the album, my dream is a world tour and, of course, I will come back to the Philippines,” he promised. The “Ballad Prince” entertained the audience for two hours with his soulful songs like “Forest,” “Circle” and “Delete.” Lee Seung-gi was moved by the audience’s reactions to his songs and quipped: “I’m singing ballad songs, but I feel like singing rock songs because all of you are energetic.” “Seung-gi, saranghae,” the audience chanted in unison in response. Lee Seung-Gi also performed “Losing My Mind,” an original soundtrack from the popular drama series My Girlfriend is a Gumiho — not once but twice, much to the delight of the ecstatic crowd. The audience erupted in applause, rose to their feet and rocked the New Frontier Theater. “Walang uuwi,” Lee Seung-gi told the crowd. He ended his performance with songs from his album, “The Dream of a Moth,” “Encore” and “Music Time.” For the encore, Lee Seung-gi rendered his debut song, “Because You’re My Woman.” He concluded the night, declaring to his fans: “I will continue to do my best for you.” The post Lee Seung-gi declares ‘Manila is the best!’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Teacher Georcelle shares her side of story
G-Force's Teacher Georcelle addressed the budding controversy regarding her and the G-Force dance group's non-appearance at the recent 20th-anniversary concert of the Popstar Royalty Sarah Geronimo. In her statement sent through a text message to Ogie Diaz, the choreographer said, "We've been training her and G-Force have been dancing with her for 16 years. She's looking for growth as an artist and as a person. She wants to try other things. There were artistic differences and I wanna support her as she embarks on this new chapter even if it means stepping out for a while. Mama Ogs, I did everything out of love and respect for her as an artist and a friend. Parang love team kami for 16 years, but this year gusto niya to try other things. This process was painful for G-Force. Most of them cried, especially the choreographers who have been training hard to bring out the best in her. It's like a break up. SG wants something else, I want her to exercise that artistic freedom. But it's also my right to exercise my artistic freedom. I had to pull out two months ago in March of course my team will always understand and respect my decision. This is me encouraging SG to experience that creative freedom and to be the ultimate decision maker in producing and directing her 20th anniversary concert." Teacher Georcelle also cleared that no demand letter came from her, instead, she wrote a personal letter saying that her dance steps are copyrighted under her name thus, giving her the right to quote a price for the use of her copyrighted works. The 20th-anniversary concert of Geronimo was a success and she happily wished her the best. She also emphasized that her personal relationship with Geronimo will not be affected by their profession, they still remain friends.
