No pressure for Kai despite being surrounded by Gilas stars

For the towering Kai Sotto, widely-regarded as the can't-miss future of Philippine basketball, there is no reason to be shy or nervous even though his young 15-year-old self is already practicing with pretty much a collection of All-Stars in the national team. Kai attended his first Gilas training session for the year Monday. He ran drills with the likes of Jayson Castro, Gabe Norwood, Calvin Abueva and posed pictures with June Mar Fajardo and Japeth Aguilar. All in the day's work for the 7'2" phenom of Ateneo. "Wala naman," Sotto said when asked if there's pressure for him while in the company of the country's brightest basketball stars. "Di ko naman nilalagay sa utak ko yung mga ganun. Focus lang ako sa ginagawa ko." "Hindi naman," he added when asked was he shy to participate. "Kasi parehas naman kami ng nilalaro kaya di naman kailangan mahiya." One thing Kai will admit though, is getting a little bit starstucked while in the presence of his basketball idols. But that's normal and he says it's on him to learn as much as he can from those who are ahead of him right now. "Siguro lahat naman ng makaka-practice sa kanila may mararamdamang ganun," he said. "Tina-try ko makisama sa kanilang lahat kaya gusto kong matuto ng marami from each and every one of them," Sotto added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Richard Corminal happy to be fighting on the same card as idol Ben Askren

Not everyone can say that they've gotten the chance to meet their idols.  Even less can say that they'll be fighting on the same card as their idols.  On Friday night at ONE Championship: Immortal Pursuit at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, Corminal can say that he's part of the latter, as he'll be fighting on the same fight card as his idol and main eventer Ben 'Funky' Askren.  "Malaking pagkakataon ‘to para makapag-selfie selfie." Corminal said with a laugh.  (This is the perfect chance to get a selfie.) Askren, who'll be coming out for his retirement bout, will be main eventing Friday's fight night in Singapore, putting his ONE welterweight world championship on the line against MMA legend Shinya Aoki.  Corminal meanwhile, will be fighting in the undercards, taking on returning Arnaud Lepont. According to the The Malaysia-based Pinoy, he idolized Askren because of the unbeaten American's grappling prowess.  "Magaling yung wrestling niya talaga, yun yung pinaka-[gusto] ko talaga, yung wrestling niya. Ang galing niya mag-control ng tao sa ground." (His wreslting's really good, that's what I really like about him, his wrestling. He's so good with controlling people on the ground.) And when asked if he's gotten to talk to Askren during fight week, Corminal says that he hasn't had the chance to do so.  "Hindi pa naman, kasi laging salisi kami sa hotel." (Not yet, we always just pass each other at the hotel) Hopefully, Corminal gets a chance to finally meet and talk to Askren after the fights.    Legends collide as Ben Askren defends his ONE welterweight championship against former ONE lightweight champion Shinya Aoki at ONE: Immortal Pursuit.  Catch the exciting MMA action LIVE on Friday, November 24th, 8:30 PM on S+A channel 23! .....»»

Blazers in familiar territory but with 2 new additions

By Anne M. Peterson, Associated Press PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers find themselves in much the same position as last season heading into the post-All-Star break stretch run. They’re coming off a confidence-boosting win over Golden State. One thing is new this year, however. The Blazers made a couple of key moves before the break to shore up their bench and to help propel them into the playoffs. Portland resumes its season Thursday (Friday, PHL time) at the Brooklyn Nets, the first of a grueling seven-game road swing. The game will likely mark the Blazers debut of Enes Kanter, signed just before the break. Kanter was waived by the Knicks following the trade deadline. He was once a starter in New York but he fell out of the rotation when the team turned its focus to younger players. The center from Turkey averaged 14 points and 10.8 rebounds in 115 games over two seasons. “As far as the rotation, that should be pretty seamless. He’ll get the backup five minutes,” Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. “He’s a proven NBA player. He can score, he can rebound. He’s played in big games. So it shouldn’t be too difficult.” Kanter will join a second unit that, as it stands, includes Jake Layman, Seth Curry, Evan Turner and another newcomer, Rodney Hood. Acquired at the trade deadline in a deal with Cleveland, Hood has played in four games with the Blazers, averaging 9.72 points a game. The moves give Portland better depth as the team heads into the critical part of the season. The Blazers are 34-23 and in fourth place in the Western Conference. They’re seven games back of first-place Golden State, the team they bested by 22 points last week. “To go into the All-Star break and be confident knowing that we beat one of the best teams, if not the best team in the NBA, it’s huge for us,” forward Zach Collins said. There are still 25 games left, but for the past two years the Blazers have mounted post-break rallies. Last year at this time, Portland was 32-26, sitting in sixth place in the West, and also coming off a victory over the Warriors. The win touched off a 13-game winning streak that helped the team secure the West’s third seed for a fifth straight playoff appearance. The team’s streak matched the franchise record. The previous season, Portland lost three straight games to go into the break at 23-33, and an overtime loss at Detroit shortly thereafter put the Blazers 11 games under .500. But Portland caught fire from there and went 13-3 in March. Damian Lillard was named the conference’s Player of the Month, averaging 29.1 points in 16 games, and Stotts was named Coach of the Month. Following the latest victory over the Warriors, Lillard said he was happy with the team’s position heading into the remainder of the season, even if they let a few slip away. “I like it, I think it’s better than it has been in the past going into the break,” he said, referring to the team’s current record. “A big win going into the break. So that’s a positive, but obviously for us we look back at the opportunities we let slip away. The Dallas game, the Miami game at home. ... But all things considered, I think we all like where we are.”.....»»

Advertising to US Millennials, Don’t Put Them All in the Same Group

US millennials -- the generation of people aged 17-35 -- are a popular target for advertisers and brands, but companies risk missing out by approaching them as one homogenous population. From Gillette razors to McDonald's and American Express, every major American company is touting its efforts to attract these young people, considered the workforce of tomorrow and the new generation of consumers. ExxonMobil and Chevron no longer hesitate to highlight their late and forced conversion to the fight against climate change, a subject important to millennials, who will suffer its most serious consequences. Vettel makes strong start to F1 preseason for Ferrari

By Joseph Wilson, Associated Press MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — For Sebastian Vettel, the opening day of the Formula One preseason couldn't have gone any better. Vettel, the runner-up to the title last season, clocked the fastest time, was the busiest driver with 169 laps and, most importantly, felt right at home behind the wheel of his new Ferrari. "We couldn't have hoped for a better day," Vettel said after setting a session-best lap time of 1 minute, 18.161 seconds. "It was unbelievable. The car was working very well. We had no issues slowing us down. "It is obviously very early and this will be meaningless in a couple of weeks, but for now, a huge compliment to everyone at the factory. What they put on the track today was very close to perfection." Vettel has the daunting goal of ending Mercedes' five-year dominance of F1. Defending champion Lewis Hamilton shared time behind the wheel for Mercedes with Valtteri Bottas and ended up with the ninth-fastest time, but it is more very likely that Mercedes was not aiming to top the leaderboard. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff acknowledged that Ferrari looked quick, but downplayed the importance of lap times in the preseason. "That is not what tests are about," Wolff said. "It's about going through all the parts and looking at all the data." Carlos Sainz put in the second-quickest lap in his first ride with McLaren, followed by Haas' Romain Grosjean and Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Renault's Daniel Ricciardo, who joined the team from Red Bull, and Nico Hulkenberg put in the slowest times of the day, finishing more than 2.8 seconds slower than Vettel. Williams, which finished last in the team standings last year, missed the first day of testing and is likely to miss Tuesday's session as well. Alfa Romeo, previously known as Sauber, unveiled its new burgundy-and-white car in the pit lane before testing began. Kimi Raikkonen, who joined the team from Ferrari, had the fifth-best time but also went off the track twice without damaging his car. The main focus of these tests is for teams to adapt to rule changes for their cars' front wing design. The goal is to make racing more exciting by facilitating overtaking. The new regulations should reduce the turbulence hitting trailing cars, which has slowed them down and made passing more difficult. Red Bull boss Chris Horner said that the new rules mean "there is a blank canvas this year." Testing will continue through Thursday and then again from Feb. 26-March 1 at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, home to the Spanish Grand Prix in May. The season-opening Australian GP is on March 17......»»
