Turkish city centenary holds special significance
Standing at the foot of the cliff overlooking Kemaliye, the golden statue of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the father of the nation, evokes the glorious past of this small town in eastern Turkey. Ataturk rewarded the loyalty of the town, nestled between the mountains and the sources of the Euphrates, by giving it his name ahead of creating the Turkish republic out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire 100 years ago. “The whole country would have wanted to bear his name but he would never have accepted!” said retired hotelier Haci Omer Yalcinkayalar, referring to the modest nature of Ataturk, who will be celebrated on the nation’s anniversary on 29 October. General Mustafa Kemal, hero of the Dardanelles war against the Allies, in 1919 began confronting the Westerners who occupied the dismembered empire to found the independent nation he longed for. His forces found themselves nearing disaster at the gates of Ankara in 1921 when he received a telegram from Egin, a trading town at the crossroads of Anatolia and the Caucasus, with an Armenian population. The telegram read: “Dear Pasha, we have 500 horsemen ready to leave at your command,” recounted Yalcinkayalar. Situated on the caravan routes heading towards Baghdad, Iran and Georgia, the town was prosperous. This is evidenced by the persisting stone and wooden houses that were built along the steep slopes of the mountainside, which town authorities requested to be classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. The entire district had around 20,000 inhabitants including some 6,000 in Kemaliye itself in Ataturk’s time, compared with 1,500 residents today. “In the end, they didn’t have to do it,” Yalcinkayalar said of the offer to send horsemen. But Ataturk did not forget the gesture and, a year later, he wrote to the Egin municipal council to offer his name. “It was given to us as a gift,” said the 73-year-old who has devoted his retirement to his town’s history. “It honors us: With the republic, we joined the civilized world.” Kemaliye has been home to many celebrations including concerts, football tournaments and banquets on every October 29 since the birth of the republic in 1923. In Guzide Tufekci’s family, the story is passed down with enthusiasm: The 60-year-old former literature professor, an enthusiastic Kemalist, recalled what Turkish women owe to Ataturk and the republic. “He opened the way for enlightened Turkish women, intellectuals, to have access to education, to have a profession. We’re proud of him,” she said. Facing a small train station that has served Kemaliye since 1938, a modest cafe is decorated like a museum. Erdal Erdurk, 59, has hung portraits of Ataturk on all the walls — in color, in black and white, in a soldier’s uniform, in a tuxedo or wearing his Astrakhan hat — and hung a huge red flag bearing his image above the entrance. Vive Versailles! A right royal welcome for British monarchs
For his first state visit as sovereign to France, which had to be postponed for six months due to riots, Britain's King Charles III will receive the gold standard of French welcomes -- a reception at the Palace of Versailles. The palace, which was the seat of the monarchy before the French Revolution of 1789, is now a museum, but it is still used by French presidents to host leaders they want to impress, from Queen Victoria to Vladimir Putin. 'Long live the king!' France, which beheaded its own king and queen, has a long-running love affair with the British royal family and over the past 170 years has often wined and dined them at Versailles. Emperor Napoleon III threw a ball for 1,200 guests at the royal opera in Versailles when Queen Victoria visited in 1855, the first trip to Paris by a British monarch in 400 years. In 1938, as Europe stood on the threshold of another world war, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II swept into Paris to cries of "Long live the king!" and were too hosted at Versailles, in this case for lunch. Less than two decades later, President Rene Coty pulled out all the stops for the young Queen Elizabeth, Britain's longest-serving monarch who died last year, on her first state visit to France with her husband Prince Philip. After a night at the Paris Opera, the pair had lunch in Versailles' Hall of Mirrors, where the World War I reparations treaty was famously signed in 1919. Fondness for foie gras The land where food is king has served up an eye-popping array of delicacies for its British visitors. But Victoria, known for her voracious appetite, had only faint praise for French cuisine, writing that while "the fowl and bouillon are quite delicious" French cooking has "less variety than ours". Her son Edward VII was treated to a 16-course feast in 1903, complete with fattened chicken, quail and glazed ducks. By Elizabeth II's time, the menu had been slimmed down to four or five courses, with one recurring staple: foie gras. The Francophile queen had a fondness for the controversial pate obtained by force-feeding ducks or geese, but it is unlikely to feature on the menu for Charles, who has banned it from his household. Open for business Versailles has hosted many distinguished commoners as well. In the post-war years, President Charles de Gaulle used it to host John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon when they were US presidents, as well as the Shah of Iran. Socialist president Francois Mitterrand threw open the palace gates to communists when he used it to host Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. By contrast, Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande rarely used Versailles, with the exception of late Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi for the former and Chinese President Xi Jinping for the latter. In 2017, before Moscow's invasion of Ukraine turned him into a pariah, Russian President Vladimir Putin was welcomed there by his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. Macron has also used Versailles to tout France's charms to foreign investors, including Tesla founder and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk who was invited to a business summit there in May. Proudly Filipino Fashion, Arts and Music
Our tradition lives on, thanks to the Philippine Heritage Society. We capped May off with a grand soiree for National Heritage Month entitled “Tertulia Flores de Mayo: A Celebration of Fashion, Arts & Music.” And that we did with aplomb. It was also a great setting for our photo ops as we strutted our stuff in Filipiniana outfits. Some went for classic, while others like me went for a modern twist to Filipiniana. Either way, every look was 100 percent fab! The fashion continued into the program featuring society’s beauties in glamorous gowns inspired by the Santacruzan. These were all designed by Oskar Peralta, Lito Perez, Frankie de Leon, Peri Diaz, Ole Morabe, Ronaldo Arnaldo and Shiela Apostol; while the opulent jewelry was all care of Gerry Sunga. [caption id="attachment_169529" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] Ronaldo Arnaldo, Frankie De Leon, Oscar Atendido, Oskar Peralta and Pando Manipon.[/caption] Even the live music took us back with nostalgic melodies and kundiman from the Lyric Opera of the Philippines. I kept my own dance moves to the music modern though! Good thing the UP Filipiniana Dance Group was there to represent the traditional dances. Comedian Prinsipe Makata also kept the night on a high note with an entertaining poetry reading. Brava to the head hermana, Prima Mache Torres-Ackerman! Plus to the Manila Hotel and the Intramuros Administration for their support. I heard through the grapevine (a.k.a. over wine) that the Society’s founders are already planting the seeds for a bigger and better Flores De Mayo 2024. Sign me up in advance! I just know it’s going to be amazing. Cheers, my amigos and amigas! The post Proudly Filipino Fashion, Arts and Music appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Coard Collection Exhibit
You know what they say… Paris is always a good idea, from fashion, food and even art! And the most recent exhibit by talented Parisian, Patrick Coard, got me saying “Ooh la la” and totally curious about his collection of bronze-patina brass sculptures. Our children really are our greatest gift and inspiration. Excited to experience his sculptures and lighting creations, I headed for W/17 in Makati. And who else to welcome me but some of my fave people? Glad to go around the exhibit with them and, of course, drinks were on the house. Huge cheers to dear Kaye Tinga for having us enjoy this experience. We want to see more collections from Coard, oui oui! Cheers!
