Manny Pacquiao says Floyd Mayweather Jr. rematch is for the benefit of the fans

After his WBA (Super) Welterweight World Championship-clinching win over Keith Thurman in Las Vegas last July 20th, it didn't take long for Manny Pacquiao to start getting into it with rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. on social media.  The two welterweight stars crossed paths back in 2015 with Mayweather getting the unanimous decision win, but it left a lot of people with a sour taste in their mouth, believing that the undefeated star played a little too safe.  Since then, a rematch has been teased over and over again, and it looks like it has gotten to the now-retired Mayweather JR.  It was 'Money' who fired the first jab with a post that essentially said that Pacquiao was living off his legacy.  The Filipino boxing icon, while not one for too much trash talk, responded by calling Mayweather out for being at the Thurman bout.  Of course, Mayweather Jr. wasn't going to let Pacquiao have the last word and responded by claiming that he was a bigger draw and higher up on the PBC totem pole.  Pacquiao responded again, with another invitation for a rematch.  The social media back-and-forth, while has slowed down in the recent days, could go on for a bit, as fans continue to clamor for a rematch between the two boxing greats.  Whether or not it comes to fruition remains to be seen, but for Pacquiao, the ball is in Mayweather's court.  In an interview with Migs Bustos of ANC Gametime, the eight-division world champion explains why he believes people continue to call for a sequel to Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. Pacquiao believes that fans continue to ask for a rematch because they don't believe that Mayweather Jr. won the first match.  "I think hindi naman magtatanong yung mga fans ng ganun kung naniniwala sila na talo ako. For example, do you think the fans will ask the questions kung alam nila na talo ako sa fight? Hindi naman siguro ganun." "The fans are asking over and over [for a rematch] because they don’t believe na natalo ako during the last fight," he continued.  Of course, the fact still remains that Mayweather Jr. maintains that he is retired and has no desire to come back to the ring.  "On my part, I have no problem with that because I’m still active in the sport. That question is for him because he’s retired, so he needs to come back and announce that he will be fighting again with me." Check out the whole interview below: .....»»

I beat you, then I signed you - Floyd Mayweather Jr. responds to Manny Pacquiao on social media

Oh boy, it looks like Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn't done talking smack on social media.  The undefeated and retired former champion responded to Manny Pacquiao's tweet by posting - this time on Facebook - another lengthy rant, unloading on the eight-division world champion and even throwing shade at Japanese star Tenshin Nasukawa along the way.  "Let's stick to the facts! Bob Arum is no longer your promoter, so when it comes to Mayweather Promotions & PBC events I’m the HNIC!" Mayweather said.  Pacquiao was promoted by Bob Arum and Top Rank Boxing for the better part of his two-decade career before jumping over to Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) late last year.  PBC, of course, has been the long-time promoter of Floyd Mayweather Jr, hence the rank-pulling.  "Bottom line, I make more money than you; I beat you, then I signed you! I was only at your fight supervising you, my employee, as any real BOSS would do," Mayweather Jr. continued, referring to his attendance at Pacquiao's 12-round decision win over Keith Thurman over the weekend to capture the WBA (Super) Welterweight World Championship.  The 50-0 boxer even took a shot at Nasukawa, whom he defeated in a three-round exhibition match at RIZIN 14 in Japan back in New Year's Eve. Mayweather needed less than a round to dispose of the smaller Nasukawa in the unsanctioned bout.  "You made $10Million for 12 rounds, when I just made $9M in under 3 minutes playing around in an exhibition with a pizza delivery guy!"  Poor Tenshin.  Now, again, whether or not this exchange ultimately leads to a rematch is unsure.  Let's see what Manny has to say about this. .....»»

Manny Pacquiao admits he relaxed during middle rounds against Keith Thurman

Eight-division world champion and newly-crowned WBA (Super) Welterweight World Champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao once again put on an impressive performance in his split decision win over previously-undefeated Keith "One Time" Thurman in Las Vegas last July 20th.  While it was another win for the Filipino boxing icon, it didn't come as easy as he would have liked, as Thurman proved to be a tough customer.  In fact, the 30-year old American was the more active fighter in terms of punches, as he landed 210 punches compared to Pacquiao's 195 throughout the 12-round contest.  Early on, it was Thurman who was more aggressive, but everything shifted when he got clipped and dropped by a left hook in the latter part of the first round.  "Yung first round, siguro yun yung magandang advantage natin, dahil in that early round, naipakita natin na hindi mo pwede akong i-underestimate or taking me lightly, taking me easy sa fight. Parang doon natin na-tatak sa isipan niya na ‘mag-ingat ka.’, Pacquiao shared in an interview with Migs Bustos for ANC's Gametime.  Pacquiao continued to outwork Thurman in the succeeding rounds, but admitted to taking some rounds off, essentially allowing Thurman to catch up and land more punches.  "Nag-relax kasi ako sa 6, 7, 8, 9," Pacquiao revealed. "Nag-relax ako nung mga rounds na iyon, so medyo sinamantala niya yung pag-rerelax ko, and the nung 10, 11, 12, nag-sigurado ako, hindi ako nag-relax, kumbaga nag-ikot-ikot ako, nag-hanap ako ng mga strategy na hindi ako matamaan and kailangan ko sumuntok ng maraming punches." Round 10 proved to be another momentum-shifting round, as Pacquiao landed a solid body shot that had Thurman visibly in pain and on the retreat.  "Pacman" explained why he opted to go to the body this time around.  "Mailap kasi sa mukha, umaatras siya pag-sumusuntok na ako, pag-gumalaw na ako," he said. "Siguro may nakapag-timbre na sa kanya, basta pag gumalaw na ako, nag-footwork na ako, umaatras na siya, so alam na niya yung strategy ko, so ginawa ko body shot, tapos napuruhan ko siya. Ayun, medyo tumiklop siya tapos tumakbo." In the end, the two most-impactful shots came from Pacquiao in the opening round and in the tenth round, which likely swayed the victory in his favor.  All in all, Pacquiao said that he was happy with how the fight went and he was able to stick with the gameplan.  A big part of the success, he adds, was the fact that he was very motivated heading into the bout, thanks to the trash talk from Thurman.  "Really big difference, kasi my opponent is a good talker, tapos sabi ko naman na it will not help him, it will help me because it will give me more motivation to work hard, to focus on training, yun yung naka-ganda, kasi na-momotivate tayo sa mga sinasabi niya and then nakaka-tulong sa atin."
