Environment advocates urge: Save Masungi
At least 70 leaders from various sectors penned an open letter urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to protect the Masungi Geopark Project — the 2,700-hectare reforestation project in the Upper Marikina Watershed and its defenders. With looming threats to cancel the MGP 2017 memorandum of agreement between the Masungi Georeserve Foundation and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the signatories called on the Marcos administration to uphold its commitment to achieving the country’s climate and biodiversity targets. The group also criticized the DENR’s apparent attempts “to discredit, undermine or altogether scrap the MGP,” stating that such moves go “against our national agenda and international commitments.” They also expressed “hope that a resolution will be made in a constructive way and not through strong-arming faithful sustainable development partners.” In recent hearings in the House of Representatives on a resolution sponsored by Rizal congressmen, the DENR stated its recommendation to cancel the MoA which created the MGP, citing the “perpetual land trust” provision as unconstitutional. In a position paper submitted to the House Committee on Natural Resources, the MGFI countered the claims of the DENR: “Strictly speaking, the objectives of conservation activities will not allow development, exploration or utilization of natural resources. This is why MGFI forwards that the 2017 MoA should be read as an agreement for a perpetual land trust for conservation, and not a perpetual license that is limited to 25 years by Section 2, Article XII of the 1987 Philippine Constitution,” said the letter.
