Icy Europe, warm North Pole: the world upside down

PARIS, France --- Not for the first time in recent years, Europe has descended into a deep freeze while the Arctic experiences record high temperatures, leaving scientists to ponder the role global warming may play in turning winter weather upside down. The reversal has been dramatic. A Siberian cold front has spread sub-zero temperatures across Europe, carpeting southern cities and palm-lined Mediterranean beaches with snow. On Sunday, meanwhile, air temperatures at the North Pole -- which won't see the Sun until March -- rose above freezing. "In relative terms, that's a 30 C (54 degrees Fahrenheit) temperature anomaly," Robert Rohde, lead scientist at Berkeley Earth in ...Keep on reading: Icy Europe, warm North Pole: the world upside down.....»»

After turning positive in January, foreign investors resumed the repatriation of their so-called "hot money" in the first two weeks of this month and bringing the six-week year-to-date level of net portfolio investments back in the red.   Documents from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas showed that $59.95 million in cash were withdrawn by overseas fund managers from the local equity, bond and money markets in the first week of February 2018.   This was followed by a much faster pace of "hot money" repatriations in the second week of the same month with a net amount of $159.21 million leaving the Philippine financial system---for a total of $219.1 million in outflows. ...Keep on reading: ‘Hot money’ flows turn negative in February.....»»

DLSU setter Michelle Cobb to take on new role one game at a time

Second-year player Michelle Cobb knows that big expectations will be set on her as she is set to become the DLSU Lady Spikers' starting setter, replacing the big void left by Kim Fajardo. The St. Scholastica College Manila product knows how hard it is to replace a collegiate legend in Fajardo, and is ready to take the challenge one game at a time. In one year playing with Fajardo, Cobb admitted that there was not much time to bond with her, but the 18-year old has learned and will try to emulate an admirable characteristic from the decorated setter this season. "The biggest lesson that I got from her was yung "puso" ni ate Kim. Sobrang buo ng puso niya. Very solid niya sa court, yun ang gusto ko i-carry this coming season." As the triumvirate of Dawn Macandili, Majoy Baron, and Kianna Dy is set to play their final season donning the green uniforms, Cobb hopes that their farewell tour will be as successful as it had been the previous two years, just by being themselves. For herself, the 5'4” Cobb is setting lofty expectations in Season 80. "I expect myself to be more mature, comparing to the other years, knowing myself better more throughout the three to four months," Cobb said.  With maturity in mind, Cobb admits that it cannot be built and developed by simply preparing, but comes out suddenly and viciously.  "Yung maturity, it comes with every situation sa game. Yung maturity, nabubuild mo lang siya thorugh those situations sa games. So I feel throughout the three months, may composure ako, I get to build my composure. I need to becomee come more mature." --- follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary.  .....»»

De Lima: Duterte turning PH into China’s satellite state

Detained Sen. Leila de Lima on Tuesday accused the Duterte administration of turning the Philippines into a "Chinese satellite state" with the impending entry of a Chinese telco company into the country. De Lima warned that the entry of China Telecom Corp. Ltd., China's largest telecommunications company, posed a security threat to the Philippines' information and communication infrastructure. "Do we really want a country who has most interest in undermining our national security to have a major role in our public utilities, especially communications?" De Lima said in a statement. Avenido receives first-ever ABL lifetime achievement award

Now heading into its eighth season, the Asean Basketball League has just given out its first lifetime achievement award. And there is no better recipient other than the player who has won a championship, won an MVP, and won the hearts of four different countries in the region. Leo Avenido was handed the first-ever ABL Lifetime Achievement Award on Tuesday at the Shangri-La at the Fort in Taguig City. “’Pag lifetime, ibig sabihin, parang matanda na talaga e no,” he joshed with reporters afterward. Turning serious, however, he said, “Siyempre, grateful ako sa ABL na nabigyan nila ako ng chance na (makuha itong award).” Avenido showcased his wares in the league for six seasons and won both the championship and the Local MVP plum with the San Miguel Beermen in 2012. “Siyempre, yung championship yung pinaka-memorable kasi kaya nga naglaro sa ABL, gusto kong makakuha ng championship. Hindi goal lang na para kumita, para mag-import, goal talaga yung championship,” he shared. He then continued, “Tapos nag-MVP pa ako. MVP tapos championship, grabe, ‘di ba?” He compiled 1, 627 total points, tops in all-time scoring, and saw action in 117 total games, fourth most in league history. Along with representing his country, the shifty guard also suited up and starred for Brunei’s Barracudas, Vietnam’s Saigon Heat, and Thailand’s Mono Vampire. And that experience, spreading the love for basketball across Southeast Asia, is another source of pride for Avenido. “Nag-mold talaga sa akin na siyempre, overseas kaya mahirap. Kaya talagang dapat makapag-focus nang maganda doon,” he said. He then continued, “Dahil doon, naging role model ka rin sa iba, naging inspiration na maglaro nang mabuti, magtrabaho lang nang mabuti, ganyan.” Still, the Lifetime Achievement Award isn’t the end of the road for the now 38-year-old – if he had his way. As he put it, “Siyempre, gusto ko pa rin maglaro kung papayagan. Pero kung hindi na, siguro ipa-pass ko na yung torch sa mga young guys.” Apparently, a new team, meaning a new country, is interested in the services of Avenido – whether it be player or mentor. “Ngayon, Indonesia, ita-try raw. Siyempre, marami ring nagta-tryout kaya sabi ko, subukan muna nila,” he shared. He then continued, “Baka bumagsak, assistant coach na lang. depende lang kung anong gusto nila.” If this pushes through, then the CLS Knights will be the only team in the league who can brag that they have a Lifetime Achievement Awardee with them. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Padda mum on Adamson's collapse in battle for third series opener

Adamson University head coach Air Padda was a picture of disappointment, as she emerged from the locker room inside the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan shortly after the Lady Falcons’ straight sets beating Wednesday. She declined to comment on Adamson’s 23-25, 24-26, 14-25, loss to Arellano University in the best-of-three series opener of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference battle for third. “Not today,” said Padda, who was obviously upset with how her team performed against a squad they swept in the elimination round. It was the Lady Falcons’ third straight loss after dropping their last two matches in the best-of-three semifinals series against Far Eastern University including a sorry four-set defeat in Game 3, Monday. Adamson never got its usual aggressive game going and unraveled in the third frame after squandering a five-point lead, 15-20, in the second that proved to be the turning point of the match. It didn’t help that Padda sat out Adamson’s top scorer Eli Soyud, who took over the scoring role for the Lady Falcons after Jema Galanza was ruled out of the contest due to a dislocated right ankle in the team’s fourth game, in the second and third sets. Soyud, who averaged 19.6 points in the semis, scored only seven points. Asked for the reason why she was shut down by Padda early, the De La Salle University transferee just shrugged her shoulder and refused to grant an interview. Game 2 of the series is on Saturday. If needed, Game 3 is on Monday.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles        .....»»

Camp time! Warriors, Wolves prepare to open training camp

em>By Jon Krawczysnki, Associated Press /em> The Golden State Warriors were the last team standing when the NBA season closed in June. Thanks to a preseason trip to China, they are one of the first teams to get going this season as the league gets up and rolling again. The Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves will hold their media days on Friday and open training camps Saturday, a few days ahead of the rest of the league as they prepare for an early October trip to China for games in Shanghai and Shenzhen as part of the league’s ongoing efforts to grow the game in the basketball-crazy nation. Golden State will be the headliner in China, just like it has been in the NBA for the last three seasons. And the Warriors open camp this season with a major advantage over everyone else that goes above and beyond the sheer talent the organization has assembled with Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. While the rest of the league spent the entire summer scrambling to upgrade in a desperate attempt to enter Golden State’s stratosphere, the Warriors return almost the entire roster from the team that won its second championship in three seasons. In fact, Golden State should only be better this year because it will not have to spend part of the early season figuring out how to incorporate Durant’s game with three other All-Stars. Meanwhile, teams like the Rockets, Cavaliers, Thunder, Timberwolves and Celtics will need all of the preseason and then some to get on the same page with the new stars in town. There will be no such orientation process in Golden State. Free agents Nick Young and Omri Casspi will have to acclimate, but that is a lot easier to do when Durant and Curry are showing them around. ___ So as media days and training camps get up and running, here are a few things to watch at the outset: strong>HARD FEELINGS? /strong> It appeared that Durant was on his way to mending some fences in Oklahoma City after he left the organization to join Golden State last season. But the fence posts may have been torn down again when Durant disparaged the Thunder team and coach Billy Donovan as the biggest reasons he left to join the Warriors. Durant has since apologized , but the topic will likely come up again when he speaks to the media on Friday. And it should be interesting to see if Russell Westbrook has anything to say about it when the Thunder open early next week. strong>CP3 ARRIVES: /strong>The most intriguing roster experiment this year may be in Houston, where GM Daryl Morey is teaming James Harden with Chris Paul in a star-studded backcourt. Harden finished second in the MVP voting last season after moving from shooting guard to point guard and now will have to move back to accommodate Paul. Both players are used to having the ball in their hands and orchestrating the offense, so there will likely be some feeling-out that needs to be done in camp. The two have already appeared in a television commercial together, so they’re off to a running start. strong>KYRIE’S MOVE: /strong>The biggest headline in a wild offseason was Kyrie Irving’s request for a trade from the Cavaliers. He landed in Boston in a move that could define his legacy, the All-Star who didn’t want to play with LeBron James. Irving did little to shed light on his motives in an enigmatic interview with ESPN and likely will be bombarded with questions about it at media day. How the Celtics handle the early crush of attention and move past Irving’s exit from Cleveland could play a big role in their ability to truly challenge the Cavs in the Eastern Conference. strong>CRASH COURSE: /strong>The Timberwolves are one of the teams that made significant roster changes this summer after a disappointing 31-win season in Tom Thibodeau’s first year as coach. They added Jimmy Butler, Jeff Teague, Taj Gibson and Jamal Crawford while trading away Ricky Rubio in an offseason overhaul aimed at ending the league’s longest active playoff drought at 13 seasons. Thibodeau asked owner Glen Taylor to allow the team to hold training camp in San Diego before they head out to China to get them away from the distractions of home and allow them to bond in a preseason that only includes three games. That Butler and Gibson played for Thibodeau with the Bulls should help that transition, but it will no doubt be a process worth watching. strong>RULES CHANGES: /strong>When players start taking the court for exhibition games, it will offer an opportunity for them to start to adjust to rules changes and points of emphasis that are new every season. One notable difference this year will be the “James Harden rule,” a change in the way the game is called aimed at reducing the number of instances a player tricks a defender into fouling them and then goes into a shooting motion to try to earn free throw attempts. Harden is the master , though dozens of players do the same thing. .....»»
