Condé Nast hails Phl islands as world’s top destinations
Readers of the world-renowned luxury and lifestyle travel magazine, Condé Nast, have personally picked the Philippines’ pristine islands of Boracay, Palawan and Siargao as their preferred islands among their choices. Based on the results of the survey, asking about half a million readers who registered to vote online, Boracay, Palawan, and Siargao placed third, sixth, and tenth, respectively. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco elated the good news, affirming how the world-renowned islands continue to mesmerize global travelers. “We welcome the resounding message tourists from around the world say: They Love the Philippines! From the charm of our islands, pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, lush landscapes, rich heritage and culture, and the excellent hospitality of the Filipino people, the Philippine experience is always one that is filled with love and happy travels,” she exclaimed. According to Condé Nast Travel, some 600,000 readers who registered to vote took part in the survey conducted online, making the Readers’ Choice Awards sought-after by the travel industry and often seen to forecast travel trends. Taking the third spot in Asia, Boracay garnered a total of 90.74 points, while Palawan got 89.71, and Siargao with 87.37 in readers’ votes. Frasco said: “This achievement reflects the hard work, dedication, and sustainable tourism efforts of our country, from our local communities, national and local government agencies, and stakeholders who have strived tirelessly to preserve and enhance the beauty of these islands.” Asked how this latest recognition will help position the country, Secretary Frasco said, “The awards inspire us to continue developing and promoting the Philippines as a premier travel destination in Asia and the world.” “Our commitment to sustainable tourism practices has not only captivated the hearts of travelers but has also contributed significantly to the growth of our nation’s tourism industry,” the Tourism chief concluded. It is said that Boracay and Palawan are no strangers on the said recognition, making an appearance in the list in the previous years. Last year, Boracay topped the list of islands in Asia, with Palawan ranking eight. The post Condé Nast hails Phl islands as world’s top destinations appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
The joy of eating
There is almost always a restaurant opening in the metropolis — either to excite the taste buds or simply elevate the Filipino dining experience. Yes, from Filipino dishes to American-Italian fare and specialty steakhouse, there will always be something for everyone to discover, relish and enjoy. LOCAVORE AT ESTANCIA MALL A cozy, contemporary space ensconced inside the Estancia Mall in Pasig City, Locavore is given true Filipino touches with its warm woods, rattan chairs, rustic pendant lights and an expansive glass window that provides an exceptional view of the surrounding environs. [caption id="attachment_192645" align="aligncenter" width="771"] OLIVE Garden’s Herb Roasted Chicken.[/caption] Opened last May, Locavore at Estancia Mall is the seventh branch of the restaurant, which catapulted to prominence in the culinary arena in 2014 after it opened its first branch at Brixton Barrio Kapitolyo, also in Pasig City. It then opened at Forbestown in Taguig City, Valero Street in Makati City, S’Maison in Pasay City, Eastwood Mall in Quezon City and SM City Bacoor. With the talented chef Mikel Zaguirre and his team at the helm, Locavore takes the homey heartwarming flavors of Filipino cooking gives a more sophisticated interpretation. And with the newly opened branch comes an expanded menu and new dishes exclusively in the Estancia outlet. For starters, have the crisp BBM or Bagnet, Buro and Mustasa — a platter filled with thinly sliced, crispy pork bagnet chips that you wrap in mustasa leaves (Samgyup style) seasoned with burong (pickled) hipon and burong mangga with gochugaru (Korean chili flakes). Follow it up with Bistek Pintxos, toasted bread decked with bistek-style beef tenderloin, grilled quesong puti, truffle aioli and red onions. [caption id="attachment_192646" align="aligncenter" width="525"] OLIVE Garden’s Purple White Cocktail.[/caption] “The new dishes are presented on slate plates because they are mostly bar chows,” says Alejandro Pahan Jr., operations manager. “That’s our new concept. We were thinking of madaling kainin (easy to eat) and something fun. Because samgyup is trending, we came up with pintxos.” The resto also has Bulalo Pintxos, roasted bone marrow with pickled labanos and pares jam; Yakitori Platter, grilled skewered chicken wings, chicken thigh meat, gizzard and liver served with annatto aioli, tocino butter, miso butter and spiced suka; Bagnet Chips, housemade bagnet chips served with spiced vinegar; and Inasalitos, inasal chicken with salsa, labuyo aioli served in lumpia taco shell. All these dishes are paired with seven new signature cocktail drinks, crafted by its in-house mixologist. Pahan says the new refreshing drinks heavily relies on the food being served at the restaurant. They complement the taste of the meals. Locavore serves alcohol and spirits. The drinks include Hardin, a hybrid between gin tonic and Tom Collins, with tonic water and botanicals and floral notes like blue pea and elderflower (which has a similar taste notes of lychee), garnished with rosemary and black pepper; Kinilig, a combo of Disaronno amaretto, honey, lemon juice and rum, with rice paper art design on top; Diwata, a blend of Bombay Sapphire gin with Giffard Lychee liqueur, sugar syrup and lemon juice, dressed with basil sprig and forget me not flower; and Antibayotiko, a whiskey-based mix of bourbon, ginger liqueur, honey and lemon juice. Locavore at Estancia Mall has a seating capacity of 120 people and targets bar goers in the area. It’s open until 1 a.m. from Wednesday to Saturday. The rest of the week, it follows the mall hours. OLIVE GARDEN AT THE VERVE A visit to the newly opened third branch of Olive Garden at The Verve in BGC, Taguig City, is a journey of discovery into a world of delicious and affordable pasta, bread, salad, chicken and pizza sensibilities. The menu is broad and touches base with all the departments of classic Italian-American fare. Upon arrival, diners are swiftly delivered a basket of freshly baked breadsticks, which are widely popular in all 900 Olive Garden stores all over the world, including the Philippines. They are buttery, a bit garlicky, moist and chewy. The unlimited breadsticks, including the never-ending soups and salads, come free with every order of an entrée. What a treat! [caption id="attachment_192647" align="aligncenter" width="525"] LOCAVORE’S BBM (Bagnet, Buro, Mustasa).[/caption] The refreshing salad is a merry mix of healthy greens, tomatoes and olives with a light house dressing, while the soup selection includes Pasta E Fagioli, Zuppa Toscana, Minestrone and Chicken & Gnocchi. Olive Garden first opened at the Mall of Asia on 12 September 2022 and at Glorietta 3 in Makati City on 9 January 2023. “It is, more or less, the same menu that we have for our first branch in MOA and also the same menu all over the United States,” Rechele Tiongson, chief operating officer of The Bistro Group, the company responsible for bringing in Olive Garden which was founded in 1982 in Orlando, Florida. “We never changed anything aside from modifying some of the portions that would fit the Filipino market, but the taste and flavor are the same. We use the finest ingredients like imported cheeses.” She adds: “Just to be clear, we did not reduce the portions but we introduce the smaller ones like solo version for those will smaller appetites. The big portions remain the same.” Browsing the menu uncovers more inviting dishes, such as the signature item, Tour of Italy (a huge platter of everything good — Chicken Parmigiana, Lasagna Classico and Fettucino Alfredo pasta), Amazing Alfredos (made from scratch using imported cheeses, not just heavy cream) and an Italian classic, Shrimp Scampi. Just recently, four new dishes were introduced — Mediterranean Chicken, Chicken Tuscany, Roasted Herb Chicken and Italian Braised Short Ribs, all served with a choice of mashed potato or steamed rice. “We are happy with the response of the public to Olive Garden,” shares Tiongson. “It was extremely unexpected when we first opened in MOA. We were busy for the next six months of the restaurant. The queue was really long. People had to wait for 30 to 45 minutes, which we felt bad for our customers, but that was how they responded to the first opening of Olive Garden in the Philippines.” Olive Garden’s vibe is casual, light and bright yet it is warm and comforting with olive green accents. The design of the interiors is an allusion to the Italian countryside through earth tones and natural textures. It can accommodate 150 people. Olive Garden at The Verve in BGC is open from Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. [caption id="attachment_192648" align="aligncenter" width="525"] LOCAVORE’S Sizzling Sinigang.[/caption] ASTON’S SPECIALITIES AT ARCOVIA Tron Ng, Astons business development executive based in Singapore, flew to Manila last, 22 September, in time for the opening of the third branch of Astons Specialities, a Singapore-based restaurant chain renowned for serving affordable steaks and Western cuisine, at Arcovia City in Pasig City. Astons is a casual steakhouse which first opened in the Philippines last year on the 4/F of Mega Atrium in SM Megamall. The second branch was at Trinoma Mall in Quezon City early this year. Silver Lush Food Corporation brought in the Singapore brand to satisfy the cravings of steak lovers and those who enjoy more seafood, chicken, sausages, burgers and pasta dishes. “This is our third outlet in the Philippines in a span of 16 months,” says Ng. “We have been around since 2005 when it was founded by Aston Soon. We started as a very small coffeeshop in Singapore. Eventually, we managed to draw a lot of attention because we offer quality food at affordable prices.” He adds: “Within a year, we opened our own restaurant and we continue to grow and expand. We have introduced many different brands under Astons and we have over 40 restaurants only in Singapore alone.” [caption id="attachment_192649" align="aligncenter" width="525"] OLIVE Garden Pasta Twirl. (From left) Zachary Reams of Darden Int’l Learning and Development partner; Marc Buencamino, Fort Bonifacio Development Corporation operations director; RC Tiongson, The Bistro Group chief operating officer; Lourdes Reyes, FBDC chief financial officer; and Lisa Ronquillo-Along, The Bistro Group chief marketing officer.[/caption] Aside from the Philippines, Aston Specialities can also be found in Myanmar and Malaysia. It was also recognized by the AsiaOne’s People Choice Awards and Asian Enterprise Brand Awards for its service and offerings. “I believe Astons will do well in the Philippines because the locals lean more on western food,” Ng says. Of course, the piece de resistance of Astons revolves around its steaks and meat, as it should be. The different cuts of meat from prime sirloin and New York strip to prime ribeye steak do not disappoint. Each has wonderful marbling with the juiciness of the meat, coating your tongue with every bite. The perfect grill marks immediately excite one’s appetite and invite you to dig in with your own side dishes — potatoes (baked, mashed, wedges or fries), Mexican nachos (chicken or beef) or Mac & Cheese. Other items on the menu are also a treat, such as Surf & Turf and Chargrilled Salmon Fillet, Grilled Porkchops and Honey Bourbon Ribs. Cocktail drinks are also aplenty — Piña Colada, Tequila Sunrise, Daiquiri, Orange Margarita and Sangria, to name some. With its industrial chandelier, brick accents and dark wood touches, the place takes on the air of an upscale roadhouse, but softened by the muted walls and expansive glass windows. Astons Specialities at Arcovia City is open daily, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. All told, a trip to any of these newly opened restaurants guarantees a truly gratifying dining experience. Homebuyers shifting to mixed-used properties
Mixed-used development, including townships and communities that feature commercial, residential, and recreational areas is commanding strong popularity among homebuyers. The Spectrum, a mixed-used condominium development, has gained recognition for its top-tier housing options. It was named “Mixed-Use Development of the Year—Luzon” at the prestigious Lamudi Outlook Awards 2023. The Spectrum’s win not only solidifies its status in the real estate industry but also highlights the Ortigas Central Business District as a prime site for mixed-use developments. Located on Julia Vargas Avenue corner of Garnet Road, The Spectrum places its residents right at the heart of the Ortigas CBD, and close to the best lifestyle destinations that urbanites seek. Teresa Tumbaga, division head, asserts that the recognition given by the Lamudi’s Outlook Award 2023, sets the stage for even greater prospects for The Spectrum and its role in Luzon’s urban development. “We are immensely proud of this achievement, which will spur us to craft even more exceptional living spaces for Filipino urban professionals in the metropolis and beyond.” Indeed, with The Spectrum’s proximity to multiple leisure dining, shopping and entertainment options, residents are spoiled for choice. The development is within striking distance of multi-national companies’ corporate headquarters, upscale hotels and restaurants, sprawling shopping malls, hospitals like Medical City, and some of the country’s renowned learning institutions like Saint Pedro Poveda College, La Salle Greenhills, and the University of Asia and the Pacific. The Ortigas CBD is likewise strategically close to the Makati CBD and BGC towards the south and the Araneta City towards the north. Still, while The Spectrum provides its homeowners with a prestigious address, equally important is how the condo features trademark amenities that include enhanced security measures; walkable swathes of greenery and landscaped spaces; swimming pools; fitness centers, and children’s play areas. “If you covet the ultimate condo lifestyle, look no further than The Spectrum, which lies at the crossroads of luxury and convenience,” Tumbaga enthuses. “On this note, we are gratified to know that Lamudi Philippines, a leading digital real estate marketplace, has found The Spectrum deserving of its Outlook Awards this year.” The post Homebuyers shifting to mixed-used properties appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Horror, whodunit, action, inspiration
We are drowning in content from gazillions of platforms, and it’s hard to pick which movie is worth your time. Here’s a rundown of popular picks now playing in cinemas and on the streamers. ‘A Haunting in Venice’ (2023) If you are a fan of Agatha Christie and Christie’s fictional Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, then indulge yourself in A Haunting in Venice, the third installment in the Poirot cinematic universe and the sequel to Death on the Nile (2022). The first Poirot movie was Murder on the Orient Express (2017). Kenneth Branagh directs and reprises his role as the mustachioed detective in A Haunting in Venice, a stylish, dark, eerie whodunit mystery set in post-World War II Venice. I saw this at the luxurious Venice Ultra Cinema at the Venice Grand Canal — the perfect venue to enhance the movie’s Venice-canal mystery feels. Here, the retired Poirot is forced to solve a spooky murder by attending a séance at a haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, you’ll have fun solving the mystery with him. (Now showing in cinemas) ‘Immersion’ (2023) From Japanese filmmaker Takashi Shimizu, best known as the creator of Ju-on: The Grudge, comes another horror film, Immersion. Utilizing modern technology to incorporate into his supernatural tale, Shimizu takes viewers to a VR-reality research facility where all the horror takes place. Starring Daigo Nishihata, Noa Kawazoe Rina Ikoma and Yûta Hiraoka, Immersion uses grisly murder, rape, adultery, vengeance and redemption as themes in this modern tale of terror. (Now showing in cinemas) ‘The Equalizer 3’ (2023) [caption id="attachment_185049" align="aligncenter" width="525"] DENZEL Washington in ‘The Equalizer 3.’ | photograph courtesy of SONY PICTURES[/caption] As long as it’s Denzel Washington, the film is bound to be important. The vigilante action film directed by Antoine Fuqua is the action-packed sequel to The Equalizer 2 and the final installment in The Equalizer trilogy. Washington reprises his role as retired US Marine and DIA officer Robert McCall, who is now settled peacefully in a small town in Southern Italy. He’s made new friends, life is good, life is violence-free. But when McCall discovers that his new friends are under the control of the local mafia, then he has no choice but to unleash his government-assassin skills and wipe them all out. With action-man Fuqua directing and Washington’s star power, The Equalizer 3 makes for one hell of a finale. (Now showing in cinemas) ‘Tár’ (2022) [caption id="attachment_185046" align="aligncenter" width="525"] CATE Blanchett as Lydia Tár. | photograph courtesy of UNIVERSAL PICTURES[/caption] In Todd Field’s Oscar-nominated psychological thriller, Cate Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, a world-renowned conductor facing accusations of misconduct. The riveting, thought-provoking film delves on cancel culture and the #MeToo movement from a compelling angle. This film, one of the best from last year’s Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, also won Blanchett the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. Field’s superb film is restrained yet thick with tension. It’s for cinephiles who enjoy deep conversations and discussions on art versus artists, among other issues. (On HBO Go) ‘A Million Miles Away’ (2023) [caption id="attachment_185051" align="aligncenter" width="525"] MICHAEL Peña in ‘A Million Miles Away.’ | photograph courtesy of AMAZON PRIME[/caption] Inspired by a true story, A Million Miles Away stars Michael Peña as NASA flight engineer José Hernández. The biopic follows the life of the flight engineer from his hometown in Mexico to his life on the International Space Station. The stirring tale reveals to viewers how Hernandez started out as a farm worker before becoming an engineer, then an astronaut. If you feel that your dreams are impossible, then get your motivational shot from this movie. The post Horror, whodunit, action, inspiration appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Irony of corruption
Corruption has become so pervasive and brazen. Masusuka ka na (you would puke),” moaned the mayor of Dumaguete City, Felipe Remollo, at the convening Thursday of a coalition of over a hundred chiefs of local government units calling for good governance and an end to corruption at all levels of government starting within their own turfs. The coalition was sparked by Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, a former Philippine National Police official who, in a virtual speech delivered during a PNP flag-raising ceremony last July, said he was “shocked” by the gargantuan increase in the country’s national debt to nearly P14 trillion. Said Magalong: “When President Duterte started his administration, our national debt was at P5.7 trillion, accumulated over the past decades. In just seven years, our national debt increased by 142 percent; we’re now at P13.86 trillion (actually P14.10 trillion, as reported by the Bureau of the Treasury in May 2023).” He quoted then-NEDA Secretary Karl Chua as saying that the country’s ability to pay the national debt is dependent on “‘our ability to manage financial leakages.’ And so I ask, ano ba yung financial leakages (what are financial leakages)? And Sec. Chua replied, ‘ang financial leakage na sinasabi ko (that I’m telling you), a big chunk of that is attributed to corruption.’” Beyond shock, he said he was also alarmed that none of the members of Congress then and now seemed to be concerned enough to “raise hell” about the country’s tremendously rising national debt. Interviewed over local television, he said he had spoken with contractors whom he asked, “Assuming I take cuts from infrastructure projects, how much will my take be? Their answer? From 10 percent to as much as 20, 25 percent — it’s up to the mayors and lawmakers to decide how much.” Bids and awards committee members, among others, also receive commissions, thus only about 45-50 percent is left for the contractor to do the project, he learned. If the project is worth, say P100, they’ll settle for from P42.50 to P55, including their profit, so they’ll have no choice but to make sub-standard projects. Having spent 38 years of exemplary service in the Philippine National Police, retired in 2016 as Deputy Chief of Operations with a total of 166 medals to his name, including the Distinguished Conduct Star, Distinguished Service Star, and PNP Gold Cross for combat and law enforcement achievements, he said: “We in the uniformed service are willing to give up a reasonable percentage of our pension to help the national government address this huge deficit, to address this big national debt; but we have yet to hear from our legislators that they too are willing to give up their pork barrel. Let’s wait and see what our brave legislators have to say.” In the interest of objectivity, it should be said here that Baguio, in two instances, was the subject of a Commission on Audit flag-down. One instance involved Magalong’s admission that rules were eased by City Hall in the purchase of food for city residents and disinfectant at the height of the Luzon lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021. He said, however, that all the lockdown expenses were properly accounted for. CoA likewise flagged the city government on allegations that it had diversified funds to complete an infrastructure project. City Administrator Bonifacio Dela Peña maintained that the local government used the DPWH fund for its intended purpose, explaining that city hall only had a P341-million budget for a Convergence Center and it needed P50 million more to complete the project. “The word ‘misuse’ is not true. The fund was well-audited and it went to where it was allotted,” said Dela Peña. It is heartening to see that a cry in the wilderness sparks action among mayors. Theirs is a cause worthy of support by all sectors, including business and the citizenry, and we wish them all the luck in what is certain to be “an uphill climb” of sincerity and political will. Kadayawan sa Dabaw now on its 38th year
Today, 20 August, is the culmination of Kadayawan sa Dabaw, touted to be the festival of all festivals in Mindanao. Now on its 38th year, the official festivity of Davao’s most colorful and bonggacious celebration started last 10 August. [caption id="attachment_173332" align="aligncenter" width="784"] street dancing at the festival. | Photographs By Henrylito Tacio For The Daily Tribune[/caption] [caption id="attachment_173333" align="aligncenter" width="763"] Floralfloat.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_173334" align="aligncenter" width="898"] The streets of the city were on fire as dancers stomped their feet, swayed their hips and cheered in their loudest voices.[/caption] A week later, 17 August, Kristine Claire Tar of the Bagobo-Klata was crowned as this year’s Hiyas ng Kadayawan. “Hiyas sa Kadayawan is a great avenue for us to show not only for our strength as a tribe but to show as a woman that we are powerful, we have a voice and that we are talented,” she answered when asked the question: “How does Hiyas sa Kadayawan empower the women of Davao City?” “The Hiyas sa Kadayawan,” she further explained, “is a showcase of different diversity, the unique beauties of the 11 ethnolinguistic tribes of the city. It is a way for us to showcase our uniqueness and our diversity, and I am an example for that.” Tar then concluded her reply, “I, as a Hiyas, have experienced the great opportunity to show and share my voice, in sharing my advocacy and my plans as a tribal youth president, and as a woman.” First runner-up Juhana Sultan of the Maranao ethnic group was chosen as Hiyas sa Panaghiusa while Althea Asnawi of Taosug tribe settled for second runner-up as Hiyas sa Kalambuan. Sultan also got the following special awards: Eastern Smile of the Night, The Spectrum, Pau-Pau Choice, Hiyas of Mr. D.I.Y and Best in Cultural Presentation. Street dances On the 19th, the streets were filled again with contingents from the city itself and even those from other provinces of Davao and even other regions with the execution of Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan. Some streets of the city were literally on fire as street dances stomped their feet, swayed their hips and shouted with their loudest voice ever during the event. Moving colors — mostly red, yellow, orange and green — flooded the streets. For the Davao City School-Based Category, there were six contingents: Apo Duwaling Dance Company of the Mabini National High School; Tribung Lacson Performing Arts and Ensemble of Lacon Integrated School; Sining Sayon Dawet Cultural Ensemble of Davao City National High School; Hinugyaw Dance Performing Arts of Don Enrique Bustamante National High School; Sining Mananayaw Ensemble of Catalunan Pequeno National High School; and the Performing Arts Company of Lapu-Lapu Elementary School. There were 13 entries in the Open Category or those contingents outside of Davao City. Davao Oriental was represented with four entries: Caraga Matimawa of Caraga National High School (from Caraga), Tribu Maganahay Matiao National High School (from Mati City), Banayan Performing Arts (from Banaybanay) and Rise and Shine Caraga of San Luis National High School. (also from Caraga). Davao del Norte had two entries: Madyaw Samalikha Cultural Dance Troupe (from Island Garden City of Samal) and Asuncion National High School Performing Arts Guild (from Asuncion). There was a lone entry from Davao de Oro: Indak Elizalde Performing Arts Guild of Elizalde National High School (from Maco). Entries outside of Davao Region were as follows: Tribung Balovebagueño (from Balabagan, Lanao del Sur), Agusan del Sur Artists’ Guild (from Agusan del Sur), Landan National High School Performing Arts Group (from Polomolok, South Cotabato), Kalingawan Dance Troupe (from Sto. Niño, South Cotabato), Gagandilan Akbar Performing Arts Guild (from Akbar, Basilan) and Sindac Anib Performing Arts Guild (from Bislig, Surigao del Sur). “The Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan is wildly popular because of the distinctively Mindanaoan beat and costumes,” one pundit commented. “Several tourists come to Davao to watch hundreds of people dancing with vigor in the streets, clad in their native attire and carrying extravagant props that would give Hollywood studios a serious run for their money.” Unlike in the past, the street dancing was moved to the afternoon instead of the usual morning. When asked why, Second District Council Al Ryan Alejandre, the festival spokesperson, told Davao media: “So, it will not be too hot for the children, and we have a good vantage view since it will be in the afternoon and the evening.” (Editor’s note: By the time this feature came out, the winners were already announced.) ‘Pamulak sa Kadayawan’ Also today, August 20, the Pamulak sa Kadayawan will be held. It is a sight to behold as it is patterned after the Pasadena Parade of Roses in the United States — where flowers and fruits are set in colorful floats by business establishments, community assemblies and peoples’ organizations as they promenade on the streets symbolizing all the bounty sustainably enjoyed by the city’s residents. This year, the Daku Category has nine entries: Ipi Kadayawan Float, Kadayawan Kaleidoscope: A multicultural Float Gala, The Fruits of Love and Caring the Nature, Kahayas sa Kalipay (XVI Global Holdings B.V.), IQOR Nurturing Hands, Nurturing Hearts, Harmony in Motion: Vista Estates and Vista Mall Tribute, Fly with the Champions — Philippines Air Asia, Inc., The Davaoeño Spirit (Aeon Blue), and National Food Authority Region XII. The Gamay Category has 13 entries: Guardians Anti-Crime Phil, International Inc., Barangay Councilors League of the Philippines First District, Teleperformance, Kababaihan Group, Duterte Squad Solid Supporters Group, Hudyaka sa Sutherland, Black Hawk Extreme Riders of Davao, Inc., Eng Seng Products, Tahawrog Tribe, Own Your Future — Alorica Teleservices, Inc., The Cause and Effect — A and L Marketing Solutions Hub, Inc., and Balangay — Philippine Retirement Authority. The Non-Competing Category has 14 entries. Perhaps not too many know that the festivity actually started in the 1970s when then Mayor Elias B. Lopez initiated tribal festivals featuring the lumad (native) and the Muslim tribes of Davao City where they showcase their dances and rituals of thanksgiving. It was then called “Apo Duwaling,” in honor of the three royalties for which Davao is famous for — Mount Apo, durian and waling-waling. In 1988, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte renamed “Apo Duwaling” to “Kadayawan sa Dabaw.” Kadayawan is derived from the friendly greeting “Madayaw,” a term taken from a Dabawenyo word dayaw which means “good,” “valuable,” “superior” or “something that brings good fortune.” “As the longest-running community festival in Mindanao, Kadayawan sa Davao has metamorphosed into a grand celebration that honors Davao’s rich cultural heritage and the many blessings bestowed on the city,” the Davao Tourism Office said. “Kadayawan’s sights and sounds remain unparalleled.” The post Kadayawan sa Dabaw now on its 38th year appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Cinemalaya acting winners mostly first-timers
The Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, which this year had the theme “IlumiNasyon,” concluded its 10-day run on 13 August with the awarding ceremony held at the grand lobby of the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City. Jasmine Curtis-Smith hosted the ceremony and sweetly reminded everyone of the goal to conclude it in less than two hours. Iti Mapupukaw made history in Cinemalaya's 19 years of operations by being the first animated entry and winning Best Film in the full-length category. “Gusto kong ibigay ito sa lahat ng mga Eric na inalisan ng bibig at hindi nakapagsalita,” said the movie’s director, Carl Joseph Papa, in his acceptance speech. He was referring to the lead character named Eric (played by Carlo Aquino) who literally has no mouth and can’t speak but goes on to overcome a traumatic experience. In the short film category, Januar Yap’s Sibuyas ni Perfecto was named Best Film for its “quiet but coruscating take on social iniquity and how the poor’s exploitation by the rich is driven by their own denigration and self-abasement.” The top-grossing Iti Mapupukaw also won the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific) award for “its finely nuanced, masterfully crafted tale of healing, friendships and young love, effectively utilizing state-of-the-art technology that is integrate to its storytelling.” The NETPAC for short film went to Hinakdal for “its pithy, layered and strong social commentary lace with dollops of humor.” Dolly de Leon, who plays Eric’s mother Rosalinda, won Best Performance of a Supporting Actress. She thanked Papa “for your beautiful script, your beautiful story,” adding“Kung hindi dahil sa ’yo, talagang hindi ito mangyayari.” The internationally acclaimed actress also thanked the movie’s producers Antoinette Jadaone and Dan Villegas of Project 8 Projects film production company, as well as costars Carlo Aquino and Gio Gahol. She then exclaimed, “Grabe, first time kong makatanggap at magsalita ng award dito sa Pilipinas. Ang sarap pala ng feeling.” She later clarified to media outlets covering the event that she meant giving an acceptance award here in the Philippines. She wasn’t able to do that when she won the Famas Best Supporting Actress award in 2020 for the film Verdict. Newcomer Pat Tingjuy, who played the lead role in the coming-of-age volleyball movie Rookie, bagged the award for Best Performance of an Actress in first-ever acting project. She was understandably speechless when she accepted her award. “I don’t know what to say,” she said, but went on to thank the producers, who are also from Project 8 Projects, and then admitted, “Naiyak ako.” Tingjuy’s costar Mikoy Morales won the award for Best Performance of an Actor for his other entry, the sexually charged Tether. “This means so much to me,” said the GMA-7’s homegrown artist in his acceptance speech. Rounding up the acting awards was Bon Andrew Lentejas for Best Supporting Actor, who was singled out for his “engaging portrayal of a young man trying to under his best friend’s difficult ways” in another coming-of-age movie, Huling Palabas. Tingjuy, Morales and Lentejas are all first-time acting award winners. The stellar cast of Ang Duyan ng Magiting — including de Leon, Agot Isidro, Bituin Escalante, Joel Saracho and Paolo O’Hara — was given the special award for Best Ensemble Acting. Dustin Celestino’s full-length feature film got the Special Jury Prize for presenting, among others, a “trenchant portrait of the wages of political violence.” Its counterpart in the short film category went to Sam Villa-Real and Kim Timan’s Hm Hm Mhm for “its boldly experimental verve to depict a woman revisiting the darker aspects of her childhood.” The Best Director awards were bestowed on Ryan Espinosa Machado for Huling Palabas (full-length feature) and Mike Cabarles for Makoko sa Baybay (short film). Machado was commended for effectively harnessing “the resources of art to come up with a deeply personal film that evokes fond memories of pre-digital cinema while paying homage to one’s small-town roots, and how all of this contributes to fashioning self-respect and self-identity.” Cabarles was lauded for employing “the resources of cinema in effectively evoking the loneliness of two brothers missing their mother whom they have lost to the sea.” The awards for Best Screenplay were given to Jopy Arnaldo, who also directed Gitling (full-length feature film), and Arvin Belarmino, the cowriter, along with Kyla Romero, of Hinakdal (short film). Gitling was cited for “its very tender tale of two persons bridging the divide between races and cultures and, through constructed language and through silence and even evasion, coming to a poignant understanding of the heart.” On the other hand, Hinakdal got the jury’s nod for the “very striking narrative that remakes the horror genre while humanizing and endowing them with heart and soul.” Kevin Mayuga’s When This Is All Over won three technical awards: Best Cinematography for Martika Escobar, Best Production Design and Best Original Musical Score for Kindred. Kindred is composed of Justin Punzalan, Vince Dalida, Luis Montales, Jaime San Juan, Moses Webb, Fern Tan, Jorge Juan Wieneke V, Othello Intia. Samatha Lee’s Rookie nabbed the Best Editing award for Ilsa Malsi while Gian Arre’s Tether got the Best Sound for the filmmaker who’s also responsible for this technical aspect. Rookie also received the Audience Choice award for full-length feature film, along with Hinakdal in the short film category. While everyone was very quiet, our leader Tony Fernandes was able to finish conceptualizing the Superapp. He started it even before the pandemic,” airasia Superapp managing director Ray Berja told Daily Tribune. The AirAsia Superapp takes the hassle out of booking the best value travel deals and is very useful not only for domestic trips but also international travel. From flights on over 700 airlines, the best accommodation packages, to ride hailing, food, deliveries and more, the app aims to be every traveler’s one-stop shop for all of their preferred travel needs. The app is partner to over 900,000 hotels across the globe. Currently, the Superapp has around 50 million active users. The number continues to grow exponentially in an annual periodical basis. “It’s for everyone. When we flew our first aircraft in 2001 with our founders, it was to really let everyone fly. Continuing that is a vision and aspiration for everyone to actually travel and go wherever they want to go,” Berja said. Japan remains the top choice for Filipino travelers, followed by Korea, Bangkok in Thailand, Bali in Indonesia, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Hong Kong. “Our number of flights are almost on the 100 percent frequency, equivalent to when we were flying before the pandemic. Internationally, we already saw the opening of Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. China is going down, but we expect to see an increase in the next months or so. We are almost at par with our pre-pandemic level. We are hoping to get back on a strong growth year on year,” Berja said. The Superapp is nominated as Asia’s Best Travel Booking App at the World Travel Awards. Vote at worldtraveltechawards.com/award/asia-best-travel-booking-app/2023. “To be vetted across the world’s best is overwhelming, given that we are only on our first year. This nomination is something really close to our hearts,” Berja concluded. Download the Superapp via App Store for ios, Play Store for android or App Gallery for Huawei. Hollywood set for first shutdown strike since 1960
Hollywood actors were poised to go on strike Thursday, joining writers in the first industry-wide shutdown in 63 years after last-ditch talks failed, with nearly all film and television production likely to grind to a halt. The Screen Actors Guild, which represents 160,000 performers including A-list stars, said negotiations late Wednesday had ended without a deal on their demands over dwindling pay and the threat posed by artificial intelligence. Its negotiators have unanimously recommended a strike to its national committee, they are expected to vote on Thursday morning. The vote opens the door to a "double strike" with writers, who have already spent 11 weeks on the picket line -- which would trigger the first Hollywood shutdown since 1960. Popular series set to return to television this year would face lengthy delays. And, if strikes continue, future blockbuster films would be postponed too. Actors, like writers, are demanding better pay, and protections against the future use of AI in television and films. "As you know, over the past decade, your compensation has been severely eroded by the rise of the streaming ecosystem. Furthermore, artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to creative professions," a SAG-AFRTA statement said after the talks fell through. Industry executives have "refused to acknowledge that enormous shifts in the industry and economy have had a detrimental impact on those who perform labor for the studios," it continued. "We are deeply disappointed that SAG-AFTRA has decided to walk away from negotiations. This is the Union's choice, not ours," the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said early Thursday. Hollywood studios had called in federal mediators to help resolve the deadlock -- a move described by SAG-AFTRA as a "cynical ploy." SAG-AFTRA represents A-list stars such as Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, and Glenn Close. All members have pre-approved industrial action if a deal was not struck. The last time the union went on strike, in 1980, it lasted more than three months. Premieres and parties A strike would immediately prevent stars from promoting some of the year's biggest releases, right at the peak of the movie industry's summer blockbuster season. In London, a premiere Wednesday night for Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" was brought forward by an hour, so that cast including Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt could attend without breaking union rules, Variety reported. But a strike would derail the much-hyped film's US premiere, due to take place in New York on Monday, as well as a red-carpet launch this weekend at Disneyland for the new "Haunted Mansion" movie. And the annual Comic-Con pop culture gathering in San Diego next week could be stripped of its stars. Even the Emmy Awards, television's version of the Oscars, which is due to take place on September 18, is reportedly mulling a delay to November or even next year. Swift resolution While the writers' strike has already dramatically reduced the number of movies and shows in production, an actors' walkout would shutter almost everything. Some reality TV, animation, and talk shows could continue. On Wednesday, Hollywood unions representing directors, behind-the-scenes film workers, and writers issued a statement of "unwavering support and solidarity" with the actors. "While the studios have a collective worth of trillions of dollars, billions of viewers globally, and sky-high profits, this fight is not about actors against the studios," it said. Workers "across all crafts and departments" stand together "to prevent mega-corporations from eroding the conditions we fought decades to achieve." Actors and writers are demanding higher pay to counteract inflation, and guarantees for their future livelihoods. In addition to salaries when they are actively working, actors earn payments called "residuals" every time a film or show they starred in is aired on network or cable -- helpful when performers are between projects. But today, streamers like Netflix and Disney+ do not disclose viewing figures for their shows, and offer the same flat rate for everything on their platforms, regardless of its popularity. Muddying the waters further is the issue of AI. Both actors and writers want guarantees to regulate its future use, but studios have so far refused to budge. Hollywood actors poised for strike after studio talks end without deal
The union representing Hollywood actors said Thursday that crunch talks with studios to avert a major industry shutdown had ended without a deal, paving the way for a vote on the first actors strike in more than four decades. AirAsia tagged best low-cost airline
AirAsia has been voted the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2023 or Skytrax for an unprecedented 14th consecutive time. The final award results covered 325 airlines ranked according to quality and excellence, with AirAsia taking first place in its category. From September 2022 to May 2023, when AirAsia progressively expanded its network to over 130 locations, more than 100 different nationalities of visitors participated in the online poll, with 20.23 million entries. AirAsia said that the recognition comes as a resounding testament to the airline’s recovery and robust growth in its routes and passengers carried, along with an unwavering commitment to innovation and providing exceptional service despite the challenges brought about by the global pandemic. As a result, AirAsia once again remains the top low-cost airline for travelers seeking the best value and choice. Capital A CEO Tony Fernandes said that in accepting the honor on Tuesday at a ceremony held at the Paris Air Show 2023 in France: “We are incredibly proud and grateful for this meaningful award given to us by the Skytrax coordinators, voters, and the incredible supporters of AirAsia. Receiving an award of excellence for 14 years running is a remarkable achievement, one that fills our hearts with joy and humility. This is an extraordinary feat for any company in any industry, even one as competitive as aviation,” Fernandes added. Respondents’ favorite Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said that AirAsia is a survey passenger favorite and has delivered a remarkable degree of consistency year-on-year since the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline category was introduced to the awards program in 2010. The recognition from customers should be a great source of pride for the airline management and staff in what has been a difficult period as travel returns after the Covid pandemic.
