Cops on alleged teen slay disarmed
The Philippine National Police on Wednesday disclosed that six police officers assigned in Navotas City were already disarmed and placed under restrictive custody following the death of an 18-year-old boy at the hands of cops due to a “mistaken identity.” PNP Public Information Office chief Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said that a police executive master sergeant, three staff sergeant, two corporals and one patrolman involved in the incident were slapped with administrative and criminal charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. He added that based on the Navotas Police report, their operatives were conducting a hot pursuit operation on 2 August in relation to a murder incident when they chanced upon the victim identified as Jerhode Jemboy Baltazar who was then on board a boat. Police said they commanded Baltazar and his companion to surrender but instead, he jumped into the river which prompted the law enforcers to shoot, hitting the victim. The police admitted that Baltazar was not the suspect they were looking for but instead a certain Reynaldo Bolivar. “They have no real intention to harm and they have no reason to do the incident to the person while that is still part of the investigation because their firearms because we collected them will be subjected to ballistic examination so that we can determine if the firearms are newly fired or not newly fired,” said Maranan. “The way we look at it, the report does not say that the person is armed, so we will look at the manner of why the police opened fire but one thing again is for sure, we will not tolerate the lapses and the error of our police,” he added. Guard ‘killer’ nabbed
Operatives from the Manila Police District arrested an individual who allegedly killed a security guard inside the Magat Salamat Elementary School in Perla Street in Tondo, Manila early Monday morning. The suspect, identified as Christopher John Marqueda — believed to be a member of the Sigue-Sigue Commando — was arrested at the corner of Quezon and Dandan Streets in Barangay 116, Tondo, Manila on Tuesday afternoon. The victim, identified as Ricky Dasco y Rieza, was a security guard at the school. He was stabbed multiple times in the body and died at the scene. Police said Marqueda entered the school premises at around 5 a.m. on Monday and stabbed Dasco, who was unaware of his presence. Marqueda then fled the scene with some stolen items. Investigators tracked Marqueda using CCTV footage from several adjacent barangays and also interviewed barangay officials, who helped them identify the suspect. When Marqueda was spotted standing at the corner of Quezon and Dandan Streets, police officers carefully approached him and arrested him without incident. Marqueda admitted to killing Dasco, but he said it was an old grudge and did not elaborate further. He is now detained at the MPD-Homicide Section and will be charged with murder at the Manila City Prosecutors Office. The post Guard ‘killer’ nabbed appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Bike riders press safer roads for all
One death too many. About 88 cyclists held Saturday a “mass mobility ride” to honor hero traffic enforcer Jeffrey Antolin who died last month in a freak road accident while saving a pedestrian. Calling themselves Mobility Advocates for People-Centered Streets, the bikers rode from the Philippine Science High School at Agham Road to the Ayala Cloverleaf. Antolin died last 23 March when he got run over by a truck along A. Bonifacio Avenue in Quezon City after pushing a pedestrian away from the path of the vehicle. Citing statistics that bicycle owners in the country outnumber car owners by 4 to 1, the group expressed surprise that the government has not updated “car-centric infrastructures and regulations.” They pushed accommodating along roads both pedestrians and non-motorized road users like bikers and scooter riders. Alternative mobility through the use of bikes and scooters is an environmentally sustainable means of transportation if road safety for all users can be assured, they added. The mass ride, they said, is not just to honor Antolin but to press the need for all people to share the road, stop reckless driving and for authorities to implement road regulations. “Recklessness while driving should not be tolerated, and road use and safety policies should be reviewed and properly implemented,” they said in a statement. The cyclists belonged to the Make It Safer Movement, or MISMO, QCklista and PARA, short for Advocates for Inclusive Transport and Road Safety Awareness Campaign. Antolin, 35, was directing traffic flow when a pedestrian did not heed his hand signal not to cross. Seeing that the truck would hit the pedestrian, Antolin pushed the pedestrian out of harm’s way, but he was in turn hit by the truck. The traffic enforcer was pulled from under the truck and was rushed to the MCU Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. The truck driver, Joel Dimacali of Tondo, Manila was arrested and charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
