PSA to fete country's top sports achievers next month

Top achievers of the year 2016 share center stage once as the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) honors them during its traditional Awards Night presented by MILO and San Miguel on Feb. 13 at the LE PAVILION in Pasay City. Hidilyn Diaz, who ended the country’s 20-year medal drought in the Olympics by winning a silver in weightlifting of the Rio De Janeiro Games, looms as the leading choice for the coveted Athlete of the Year award during the formal affair. Last year pro boxers Nonito Donaire Jr., and Donnie ‘Ahas’ Nietes along with golfer Miguel Tabuena were the joint recipients of the highest honor bestowed by the Philippines’ oldest media organization composed of editors and sportswriters from both the print and online portals. President Duterte has been invited to be the guest speaker of the night. President’s Award, Lifetime Achievement honor, Executive of the Year, National Sports Association of the Year, Mr. Basketball, Mr. Golf, Mr. Football, and Ms. Volleyball will also be handed out as part of the two-hour program backed by Smart, Foton, Mighty Sports, Philippine Basketball Association, ACCEL, Gold Toe, SM Prime Holdings Inc., Globalport, Rain or Shine, ICTSI, and MVPSF. Athletes who earned Olympic berths through qualifying tournaments are likewise to be cited, among them tracksters Eric Cray, Marestella Torres, and Mary Joy Tabal, weightlifter Nestor Colonia, Ian Lariba, boxers Roger Ladon and Charly Suarez, taekwondo jin Kirstie Alora, and golfer Miguel Tabuena. The PSA will also recognized major awardees in different sports and citations to various personalities and entities in the annual rite backed by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, and Federal Land. Not to be missed out are the organizations recognition to young promising achievers such as the Tony Siddayao Awards and the Milo Male and Female Junior Athletes of the Year, as well as posthumous awards to those dearly departed friends of the local sportswriting community.  .....»»

PVL: Selimovic back for unfinished business

Bosnian Edina Selimovic is back to settle unfinished business. The 6-foot-3 middle blocker makes her return to the Philippines two years after her last stint, this time, for newcomer Motolite in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference. Selimovic debuted in 2017 playing for Pocari Sweat, but the towering import saw action in just two games before going down with a torn hamstring that abruptly ended her stint. She was replaced by American Krystak Rivers, who eventually helped the Lady Warriors win the inaugural import-laden conference crown.         “I don’t really want to remember that. It’s really hurtful for me but yes I’m back and I really hope that I’m not gonna have the same issue again. I will finish this season,” said Selimovic, who after recovering from her injury helped her club team in her country win the championship. Selimovic also welcomes the chance of playing with good friend Myla Pablo, whom she played with during her short stint with Pocari Sweat.   “I’m really excited. Myla is a good friend of mine and we became really close here,” she said. “I’m happy that I’m with the same team with her again. I’m excited to play with her.” Selimovic and her partner Cuban Gygy Silva, who is yet to arrive, together with Pablo will lead a relatively young squad composed of the core of University of the Philippines and Adamson University.     “I’m used to play with younger players or even older players so I’m fine, I’m adjusting fine. I don’t have that problem,” said Selimovic, who flew in a few days ago. Looking at the six-team field, Selimovic knows that it won’t be an easy task to bring Motolite to the big stage but it is a goal that the team will try to achieve. “We’re not gonna look at the other teams, we’re gonna look at what’s best for us. Do our work and do our best and play 110% every game. It doesn’t matter who we play against,” she said. Motolite will debut on June 1 against returning BaliPure, which was the last team Selimovic played against in her first foray in the PVL.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Mbappe hints at move away from PSG

PARIS (AP) — Kylian Mbappe has opened the door for a move away from Paris Saint-Germain. Just after receiving the award for the French league's player of the season, the 20-year-old World Cup winner said he wants more responsibility, either at PSG or "elsewhere with a new project." Mbappe, who joined from Monaco in 2017 for 180 million euros, had never speculated before on a possible transfer away from the French champions. "I feel it may be the right time to take more responsibilities," Mbappe said after succeeding Neymar as the league's best player. "Hopefully it will be at Paris Saint-Germain, it would be with a great pleasure. Or maybe elsewhere, with a new project." After winning the World Cup in Russia, Mbappe followed up with 32 league goals this season, becoming the first French player to reach at least that tally since 1966. Mbappe has been linked with a possible move to Real Madrid, where Zinedine Zidane returned as coach earlier this season. PSG sealed a sixth French league title in seven years but failed to defend its French Cup and French League Cup crowns this season. PSG was eliminated in the Champions League last 16 for the third straight year. Mbappe was also named the young player of the season for the third straight year. After leading Lille to a second-place finish, Christophe Galtier won the coach of the year award......»»

Caduyac, Nzeusseu power LPU past Letran

Raymar Caduyac poured 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as Lyceum of the Philippines came back from 13 points down to beat Letran, 101-96, Friday in the 2019 FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament. The Pirates recovered from a shaky first half to remain unbeaten in three games in Group B while handing the Knights first loss in four games. Caduyac provided the much-needed offensive firepower in the pivotal stretch of the fourth frame but it was Mike Nzeusseu who dropped the hammer with a one-handed and one slam with nine ticks left to wrap the win. “We beat ourselves in the first half,” said Pirates coach Topex Robinson. “Nabulaga kami with a very good first half from Letran.” Nzeusseu led LPU with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Jaycee Marcelino had 18 points, four boards and two steals while Jayson David contributed 11 markers for the Pirates. Letran saw its winning run snapped for a 3-1 card despite  the 30-point explosion of Allen Mina. Fran Yu got 15 points, five rebounds and three assists while Tommy Olivario had 10. In other results, De La Salle University weathered Centro Escolar University’s upset scare, 71-67, for a 3-1 win-loss record in Group A while San Sebastinan College beat University of the Philippines, 73-64. Encho Serrano led the Green Archers with 18 points while Justin Baltazar finished with a double-double with 14 markers and 10 boards. Aljun Melecio chipped in with 11 points for the Taft-based squad. The Scorpions cut DLSU’s lead to 69-67 with just a minute left off a Jan Formento triple. The Green Archers came up empty in the next possession but Formento missed his triple before Serrano drilled a layup to secure the win. Formento scored 22 for CEU, which slid to 2-1 mark. RK Ilagan posted 18 points while Allyn Bulanadi finished with 16 for the Stags. Ricci Rivero scored 19 points, Jun Manzo got 12 while reigning UAAP MVP Bright Akhuetie had 11 markers in a lost cause for the Maroons.   Meanwhile, College of St. Benilde defeated Jose Rizal University, 79-56. Yankie Hanruna caught fire as he steered the Blazers to its first win in  three outing, scoring 19 points in 7-of-10 field goal shooting to go with five rebounds. Justin Gutang and James Pasturan added nine markers each as CSB dictated the tempo of the game early with a backbreaking 18-4 first quarter blitz. The Bombers were no match to the guns of the Blazers as they dropped to 0-2 mark in Group B.
