Samante: Parent s crucial role in sports
Engaging in sports is more than just physical activity; it is a comprehensive experience that shapes character, instills discipline, and fosters valuable life skills. While coaches and teammates play vital roles, parents also have a crucial role to play in their children's athletic journeys. Commitment is one of the key aspects of effective parental involvement in sports. Parents are their child's first and most influential role models, and when they demonstrate commitment to their child's sports activities, it sends a powerful message about the importance of dedication and hard work. This helps children internalize these values and apply them in sports and other aspects of their lives. Building a strong foundation for success in sports requires commitment from parents. Committed parents create a stable and encouraging environment by attending practices, cheering from the sidelines during games, and supporting their child through victories and defeats. This stability is crucial for a child's emotional well-being and overall enjoyment of the sport. Sports often require long-term commitment to see significant improvement and success, and parents who prioritize consistency by ensuring their child attends practices, maintains a healthy lifestyle, and stays focused on their goals contribute to instilling discipline and a strong work ethic. Consistent commitment from parents also helps children understand the value of perseverance and the rewards it brings. While success and achievement.....»»
No court appearance needed for adoption
The adoption process in the Davao Region has become easier and more streamlined, as it is now solely administrative and no longer requires a court appearance. According to Sheena Lyka Dollolasa, a social welfare officer at the Regional Alternative Child Care Office-Davao Region (Racco-Davao), prospective adoptive parents only need to undergo administrative proceedings and coordinate with social workers to adopt a child. This change is due to the Republic Act (RA) 11642, which established the Domestic Administrative Adoption and Alternative Child Care Act. While the socialized fee for adoption has not been determined yet, Dollolasa assured that it would not be expensive, as the law states that adoption should not be costly. In addition to adoption, Racco-Davao also provides foster care for neglected, abandoned, foundling, and abused children. Foster parents must meet certain qualifications, including being of legal age, physically healthy, and financially stable. The government provides subsidies for the basic needs of children under foster care, with different amounts allocated depending on the child's age and special needs......»»
Trafficker mom offers own kids for online sexual exploitation
A 32-year-old woman from Talomo District, Davao City has been sentenced to four life imprisonments and ordered to pay a total of P6 million for multiple violations, including the violation of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act and the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act. The woman was arrested after offering to sexually abuse her six-year-old son and one-year-old daughter in exchange for money or other considerations. The presiding judge found her guilty of qualified trafficking, child abuse, and offering child sexual abuse material through a computer system. In addition to the life sentences, she was also sentenced to an additional 14 years in prison and ordered to pay fines and damages. The arrest and rescue operation were carried out by law enforcement agencies in collaboration with social workers. The conviction is seen as a testament to the government's efforts to combat trafficking and online sexual abuse and exploitation of children. The International Justice Mission-Philippines estimates that nearly half a million Filipino children were victims of this crime in 2022 alone. Convictions like this are crucial in deterring such crimes and the community's vigilance in reporting cases is essential. To report information about child abuse, contact the Davao City Hotline or the Philippine.....»»
NGOs question occupational permits given to prostituted women
NGOs in Davao City question the occupational permits given to prostituted women, stating that selling one's body for sex should not be classified as legitimate work. Referring to prostituted women as 'pokpok' or 'sex workers' only exacerbates discrimination against them, rather than addressing the root cause of the issue. Jeanette Ampog, executive director of Talikala Incorporated, argues that the term 'sex workers' fails to accurately portray the exploitative situations these women face, and instead, glamorizes their predicament. There are existing laws against prostitution, such as Republic Act (RA) Number 11930 (Anti-Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children), RA 7610 (Special Protection of Children Against Child Abuse), RA 9710 (Magna Carta of Women), and a local ordinance in Davao in its second reading for OSAEC, but Ampog expressed hope that it would pass the final reading. This, she believes, would signal the commitment of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Davao to fund programs for prostituted women. Lawig Bubai and Talikala called on government bodies, non-government groups, and faith-based organizations to address the root causes of prostitution.....»»
