Filipinos should not forget the heroes, heroines who fought for freedom—PBBM
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called on Filipinos to celebrate National Heroes Day with renewed pride and determination as he urged the nation to remember the sacrifices and contributions of its heroes. In his message on Monday, Marcos Jr. said Filipinos should not forget the "many heroes and heroines" who fought for the country's freedom and sovereignty. "From the defiance of our ancestors against the first invading forces to the diligence that our soldiers and statesmen held to see the last of them off, our unsung champions prove that heroism is not limited to the Herculean; it also includes the honest, earnest, and compassionate living that we do every day," Marcos Jr. said. The president also stressed that each Filipino can be a hero for their families and communities. "Hence, on this year's National Heroes Day, I enjoin every Filipino across the globe to celebrate with a renewed understanding and sense of pride for the fortitude that is naturally abundant in our hearts as a people," Marcos Jr. said. "As we recognize our forebears whose uncelebrated legacies our society is built on, let us also realize our power to become heroes for our families and communities. May this consciousness then ignite us to be dedicated to creating a new Philippines that is strong, prosperous, resilient, and secure for present and future generations," he added. National Heroes Day is a public holiday in the Philippines that commemorates the sacrifices and contributions of the country's heroes. It is celebrated on 28 August, the anniversary of the execution of José Rizal, a national hero executed by the Spanish colonial government for his advocacy for Philippine independence. AFP: WPS arbitral ruling a validation of Phl sovereignty
As the Philippines commemorates its 7th anniversary of the Permanent Court of Arbitration win on the West Philippine Sea, the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Western Command has committed to continue protecting the country’s territory, including the maritime domain. AFP WesCom Commander, Vice Admiral Alberto Carlos, said the Philippines is one with its neighboring countries and allies in enforcing the rules-based order to keep structural peace as well as freedom of navigation, trade, and commerce. “The 2016 PCA ruling gave credence and validation to Philippine sovereignty, sovereign rights, and entitlements in the West Philippine Sea. As the frontline in enforcing this ruling, the AFP Western Command remains the dominant force in protecting every inch of the country’s territory and the riches in our exclusive economic zone,” Carlos told reporters on Wednesday. Carlos said WesCom is adamant to maintain its presence in the country’s sovereignty. “In our remotest outposts at sea, very few dare to go because of the unpredictability of the temperament of the forces of man and nature. There, the WesCom soldiers raise the Philippine Flag without fail and proudly fly, sail, and stand guard to defend what is definitively ours,” he stated. Carlos, meanwhile, said that they are “heartened by the solid fact that the decision is now part of international law, is recognized by the international community, and has become the basis for policies and actions in the WPS.” “The gifts of nature will continue to flourish to be enjoyed by all future generations,” he added. In a separate radio interview, AFP spokesperson Col. Medel Aguilar cited that the arbitral ruling on WPS provides the country the right to defend its maritime territory under its exclusive economic zone. “This is a peaceful means to resolve conflict among countries,” he said, to further the claim that the National Task Force on the WPS are the best people to be asked regarding concerns on the Philippine territorial claims over the portion of the so-called South China Sea. Aguilar reiterated the AFP’s shift to external security operations which include the strengthening of defense posture in the Philippine EEZ—with more aerial and surface maritime patrols to be conducted by the AFP’s naval, air, and ground assets. Japan renews call on China to recognize the 2016 Arbitral Award
Japan on Wednesday joined the growing pressure on China to recognize the 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands that cemented Manila’s claims in the West Philippine Sea. In a statement, Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshima called on both the Philippines and China to “comply” with the arbitral award which he described as “final and legally binding.” “As the Tribunal's award is final and legally binding on the parties to the dispute under the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the parties to this case, the Philippines and China, are required to comply with the award,” Hayashi said. “The claim by China that it will not accept the award is against the principle of peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law, in particular UNCLOS, and undermines the rule of law as a fundamental value of the international community,” he added. He issued the statement as the nation commemorates the seventh anniversary of the landmark victory, a ruling which China continues to reject by insisting on its historic rights in the West Philippine Sea. On 12 July 2016, the Philippines won the arbitration case it filed against China in the PCA. China, however, rejected the arbitral ruling and stood by its historic rights nine-dash line claim. According to Hayashi, Tokyo “strongly hopes” that the parties' compliance with the award will “lead to the peaceful settlement of disputes in the South China Sea.” “Upholding and reinforcing the free and open international order based on the rule of law will be the benefit of all countries, large and small,” he said. Likewise, he noted that Japan renews its objection to China’s maritime claims in the South China Sea, saying that these are “inconsistent” with UNCLOS. He also said that it remains “seriously concerned” about the current situation in the area. “Recalling that the Japan-Philippines Joint Statement issued in February 2023, G7 Hiroshima Leaders' Communiqué in May 2023 and G7 Foreign Ministers' Communiqué in April 2023 underscored the importance of the free and open international order based on the rule of law, Japan reiterates its strong opposition to unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion,” he said. “Japan will continue working in coordination with ASEAN and other countries concerned to maintain and strengthen the free and open international order based on the rule of law,” it added. Last week, Chinese Coast Guards vessels allegedly blocked and carried out “dangerous maneuvers” against Philippine Coast Guards vessels in the Ayungin Shoal. Ayungin Shoal is located 105 nautical miles west of Palawan and is part of the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of the Philippines. BSP serves Palawan through new branch
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas inaugurated a branch in this city on Thursday to provide banking services and drive more economic activities while boosting financial inclusivity. The BSP main building office is in a 5,000-square meter lot at the corner of North National Road and Sampaloc Road in Barangay San Jose. It houses the financial and administrative offices, cash operation units and security management. BSP Governor Felipe Medalla said the branch, designed to reflect the modern architecture of their latest generation buildings, aims to enhance accessibility primarily in obtaining clean banknotes and coins. “It would become easier for banks to deal with the BSP. Those who needed BSP’s service do not need to charter flights to Manila,” he said. Major event Medalla and other BSP officials were joined in the new branch opening by Palawan governor Victorino Dennis Socrates, Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Bayron, and Vice Mayor Maria Nancy Socrates. During his brief address, Socrates expressed the significance of the opening, noting that its occurrence coincides with the month-long celebration of Palawan’s 121st anniversary of its civil government establishment. He highlighted that the province would also be saying “goodbye, dirty money.” Bayron also highlighted that the funds to be distributed from the branch would effectively address the recurring cash shortage experienced every December. This is of great importance to the city, which serves as a pivotal hub for trade and financial services. “December is withdrawal time, a charter plane of the Bangko Sentral has to fly here to send money. This time, that will not happen anymore because of this branch,” Bayron said. 33 banks get quick service He said the branch will cater to the requirements of approximately 33 banks within the city and an additional 25 banks located in various towns throughout the province. With the establishment of BSP Puerto Princesa, the central bank’s presence now extends to a total of five regional offices covering the Greater Manila Area, North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao regions. Additionally, it encompasses 21 branches situated in various provinces and cities including La Union, Batac, Cabanatuan, Dagupan, San Fernando Pampanga, Tuguegarao, Legazpi, Lucena, Naga, Puerto Princesa, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Roxas, Tacloban, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cotabato, General Santos, Ozamiz and Zamboanga. This expansion further solidifies the comprehensive reach of the central bank across the country. BSP regional offices are responsible for overseeing the operations of branches within their respective jurisdictions. They also conduct regional economic surveillance, facilitate financial literacy programs, and advocate for financial education. Additionally, these offices are involved in the administration of cash and gold-buying operations. On the other hand, BSP branches primarily handle cash operations, which include services such as withdrawals, deposits, currency exchanges, and retirements within their designated regions or provinces. In select areas, they also engage in gold-buying operations. During the inauguration ceremony, those present included Monetary Board members Peter Favila, Antonio Abacan Jr., V. Bruce Tolentino, and Anita Linda Aquino. In addition, BSP Deputy Governors Mamerto Tangonan, Eduardo Bobier, and Bernadette Romulo-Puyat were present, along with BSP Senior Assistant Governor and General Counsel Elmore Capule, SAG Edna Villa, and Sector-in-Charge Thomas Benjamin Marcelo. Furthermore, Puerto Princesa City Vice Mayor Maria Nancy M. Socrates graced the occasion. The event also saw the participation of BSP officers from the Manila Head Office and South Luzon branches, as well as representatives from the Palawan Bankers Association, and local bank managers. North Korea says it tested new solid-fuel ICBM
North Korea said Friday it had successfully tested a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile, which state media hailed as a key breakthrough for the country's nuclear counterattack capabilities. South Korea's military said Thursday that the North had likely tested a new type of ballistic missile, with the launch briefly triggering an evacuation order in parts of Japan. Photographs released by state media showed leader Kim Jong Un -- accompanied by his young daughter -- watching a black-and-white missile blast off in a cloud of smoke, and smiling in jubilation after the purportedly successful launch. "A new type of intercontinental ballistic missile 'Hwasung-18' was test fired on Thursday as the key means of strategic military force," the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said. "The purpose of the test launch was to confirm the performance of the high-power solid-fuel multi-stage engines, the stage separation technology and the reliability of the control systems with different functions, and to evaluate the military effectiveness of the new strategic weapons system," it added. Kim said the new weapon "will greatly reorganize our strategic deterrence and reinforce the effectiveness of our nuclear counterattack," according to KCNA. "We will strike with deadly force and respond aggressively until the enemy gives up its idle strategy and foolish behavior and so that it will suffer in endless fear," he added. Wish list All of Pyongyang's known intercontinental ballistic missiles are liquid-fuelled, and solid-fuel ICBMs that can be launched from land or submarines have long been at the top of Kim's wish list. Such missiles are easier to store and transport, more stable and quicker to prepare for launch, and thus harder to detect and destroy pre-emptively. At a military parade in Pyongyang in February, North Korea showed off a record number of nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missiles, including what analysts said was possibly a new solid-fuel ICBM. North Korea has "repeated again its pattern of provocation with its new weapons," Go Myong-hyun, researcher at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, told AFP. "First, it tested a solid-fuel motor before showcasing the missile at a military parade in February and now they carried out an actual test," he said. "The reason North Korea is obsessed about solid-fuel missiles is because it will significantly reduce the preparation time before launch," Go said. "This is important as the longer it takes after bringing out the missile from a silo or a tunnel, the higher the possibility of destruction before launch." The announcement comes a day before North Korea is set to mark one of its most important political anniversaries, the Day of the Sun on April 15. The date commemorates founding leader Kim Il Sung's birth anniversary and has typically been celebrated with significant weapons tests or military parades. Relations between the two Koreas are at one of their lowest points in years, with Pyongyang declaring itself an "irreversible" nuclear power last year, effectively ending the possibility of denuclearization talks. Kim also ordered the military this year to intensify drills to prepare for a "real war". Washington and Seoul have ramped up defense cooperation in response, staging joint military exercises with advanced stealth jets and high-profile US strategic assets. North Korea views such exercises as rehearsals for invasion and described them on Tuesday as "frantic" drills "simulating an all-out war against" Pyongyang.
