Toxic? Britney tells of troubles in new memoir
Britney Spears, the dewy-eyed child star who became a global pop phenomenon and then melted down in full view of the world, tells her story Tuesday with the release of her already bestselling memoir. "The Woman In Me" is the pop princess in her own, unvarnished words, shot through with the anguish of a family she believes has failed her at every step of the way, in an industry that mercilessly devours its talent. From sharing daiquiris with her mother as a young teenager -- two years after she became a regular on "The Mickey Mouse Club" -- to the 13 years she spent as an adult in a conservatorship, the memoir details how she struggled to escape the influence of her controlling father. Until two years ago, when she got out from under the conservatorship legal relationship that she says dictated everything from her birth control choices to the set list at lucrative Las Vegas gigs. In the intervening months, Spears has married a former dancer, announced then lost a pregnancy, and is now on the road to her third divorce. The book, whose pre-orders catapulted it to the top of the Amazon best-seller list, was produced too early to include that coda with husband Sam Asghari. But readers will still have plenty to chew on. 'Harlot' Tidbits that have leaked ahead of publication include news of an abortion Spears says fellow Mickey Mouse Club alum Justin Timberlake urged her to have after she became pregnant while the couple was together. When the pair split, and his hit "Cry Me A River" appeared to be about the way he felt she had betrayed him, Spears was painted as the "harlot who'd broken the heart of America's golden boy," she writes. In reality, he was "happily running around Hollywood" while she was "comatose in Louisiana." Readers have also learned of a brief but intense affair with Irish actor and Oscar nominee Colin Farrell, what she calls "a two-week brawl." "Brawl is the only word for it -- we were all over each other, grappling so passionately it was like we were in a street fight." The noughties brought fame and notoriety to Spears in equal measure, with a passionate fan base eager for every last scrap of news about her. That collided with an aggressive paparazzi culture that delighted in capturing her partying alongside hell-raisers like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. Spears insists there were never hard drugs and that she did not have a drinking problem, but admits that she was taking Adderall, the ADHD medication. A publicly played-out bust-up with second husband Kevin Federline, and an ensuing custody fight over their two children, presaged the emotional low watermark: shaving her head and attacking a photographer's car. "Flailing those weeks without my children, I lost it, over and over again," she writes. "I didn't even really know how to take care of myself. "I'd begin to think in some ways like a child." A year later, the courts appointed her father Jamie Spears to control her money and her personal life. Over the next 13 years, she was told who she could see, and how much she could spend, and even ordered not to have more children. Yet under Jamie Spears, she would still perform as a pop icon. "Too sick to choose my own boyfriend and yet somehow healthy enough to appear on sitcoms and morning shows, and to perform for thousands of people in a different part of the world every week." "From that point on, I began to think that (my father) saw me as put on the earth for no other reason than to help their cash flow." Jamie Spears has always insisted that he had the best interests of his daughter at heart and was seeking to protect her from exploitation. The conservatorship was dissolved in 2021, but -- aside from collaborations with Elton John and will.i.am -- it has not heralded a return to creativity for Spears. "Pushing forward in my music career is not my focus at the moment," the now-41-year-old Britney writes. "It's time for me not to be someone who other people want; it's time to actually find myself.".....»»

Knife-wielding man arrested
A patrolling cop from the Manila Police District Police Station 1 prevented a brawl that could have possibly led to a stabbing after he arrested one of the two men involved in the fight, who was holding a bladed weapon, on Saturday evening in Tondo, Manila. MPD Chief P/Brig. Gen Andrei Dizon identified the suspect as Alvin Flores, a resident of Barangay 112 in Tondo, Manila. Initial reports disclosed that while cops were making a night patrol aboard their motorcycle, they chanced upon a commotion wherein two individuals were brawling. One of the men ran and the other, who was armed with a bladed weapon, chased his opponent. This caught the attention of the police, who also gave chase to the suspect in possession of a knife. After cornering him, they ordered him to drop his weapon and lie down on the ground. The suspect, after seeing uniformed police, yielded to the command and peacefully followed their instructions until he was arrested and handcuffed. Seized from the suspect was one sharpened screwdriver with a length of more or less 12 inches, including the handle. The suspect is currently detained at the MPD-PS1 station and will face charges for violation Article 282 of the Revised Penal Code or Grave Threat, Alarm and Scandal, Illegal Possession of Deadly Weapon and violation of the Omnibus Election Code at the Manila City Prosecutors Office. Thirty-five more people charged after fatal stabbing of Greek football fan
Greek prosecutors on Sunday charged 35 more people in connection with the fatal stabbing of a young Greek football fan before a Champions League game, taking the total to face charges over the incident to 105. Of that number, 102 are from Croatia and suspected of links with the 'Bad Blue Boys', hardline supporters of Dinamo Zagreb who traveled to Greece last Monday, the day before their side's Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens. The others are two Greeks and an Albanian. Authorities are hunting for another Greek national, also suspected of being involved in the fatal attack, according to the same judicial source. Michalis Katsouris, 29, died after being stabbed in a mass brawl that erupted on the streets of the Greek capital. Following his death, UEFA postponed Tuesday's third-round qualifier between the two sides until 19 August. Those remanded in custody have all denied involvement in the death of Katsouris. Charges they face include murder, involvement in a criminal organization, and illegal possession of weapons. ‘MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING’ REVIEW MISSION TO ENTERTAIN FAILS
It’s not that Tom Cruise has significantly aged in the seventh, and possibly the penultimate entry, to the Mission Impossible franchise that makes Dead Reckoning - Part One one of the worst films of the year. [caption id="attachment_158075" align="aligncenter" width="525"] TOM CruisePHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF PARAMOUNT PICTURES[/caption] The 61-year-old actor is still lithe and agile and runs like Speedy Gonzales. But it’s the eerily bad script that is rather painful here. You’d think ChatGPT — in its beta-testing phase — could probably generate a better screenplay. Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct his third MI installment, co-writing a story that understandably jumps into the realm of Artificial Intelligence, given it›s the popular thing these days. Here, Cruise’s superspy Ethan Hunt is embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with clowns to get hold of a powerful physical key that holds immense power and can be weaponized on an unimaginable scale. One of the enemies is a rogue AI called The Entity that looks like plain disco lights, or a generic animated desktop screensaver, when shown on a computer. AI, in real life, is a terrifying threat. But in this movie, you don’t experience the danger of its sentience. Except for a mildly interesting precognition from a cipher-locked explosive, the most “exciting” thing The Entity can do here are some CCTV tricks, which we have seen a gazillion times, even way back in the past with the famous bus scene from Keanu Reeves’ Speed (1994). The similarly rogue and sentient AI in two X-Files episodes in the ‘90s, The Ghost in the Machine and Kill Switch, are ten times more thrilling than Dead Reckoning’s plot. Nothing new The Targaryen-haired Vanessa Kirby returns as arms dealer Alanna, as well as Ethan’s usual IMF gang Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji (Simon Pegg) and Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson). A new major supporting female character is introduced, Grace (Hayley Atwell), a professional pickpocket that quickly (quicker than a Tinder swipe) becomes Hunt’s new love interest. The “biggest” human villain here is the laughable terrorist Gabriel (Esai Morales) who looks more like a bored dad who enjoys lame tricks to amuse his kids, such as hiding inside a coffin-like treasure chest or walking stiffly behind doors, furniture and airport facilities. Even more unintentionally hilarious is when Gabriel’s assistant, the cosplayer-like Paris (Pom Klementieff), opens doors for him or unlocks latches for him to give him some semblance of a grand entrance. You may argue that you’re in it for the stunts and the action set pieces. After all, MI is known for its spectacle — stunning intercontinental locations where Cruise does all his heart-stopping stunts. Sure. Yawn. Here, the action scenes are nothing new. Hand-to-hand combat on top of a train? We’ve seen a thousand versions of this already. A car chase in Rome? A similar sequence in the kiddie movie Madagascar 3 is way more thrilling. Unintentionally funny The fight choreography, too, is often lazy and too zippy, with quick cuts that deprive you of the power seen in Rogue Nation’s raw, organic bathroom brawl between Cruise and Henry Cavill. The action scenes are overstretched and uninspired that you can easily stand up for a bathroom break — heck, you can even do your groceries — and when you come back, it’s still the same stuff happening on screen. The famous motorbike scene? We’ve seen it go viral on TikTok already, so it doesn’t cut it anymore. The dialogue, too, is often unintentionally funny, with surprisingly hammy acting, even for Cruise. There is a scene, at a “dangerous” meeting at a Venice party, where Ethan and Grace, surrounded by their enemies, are using their eyes to communicate, yet they are being so obvious that the film feels like a B-movie, or a deepfake of Mission Impossible, or I am in a James Corden MI parody with Lalo Schifrin’s theme music just thrown in. The movie’s jaw-dropping score of 96 percent at Rotten Tomatoes, as of writing, feels like AI sabotage. Nearly three hours long, Dead Reckoning - Part One is a disturbing example that humans are no longer imaginative and that AI›s threat is becoming real, what with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. At this point, AI just might entertain us better. 1.5 out of 5 stars Now showing in cinemas The post ‘MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING’ REVIEW MISSION TO ENTERTAIN FAILS appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Na-shock yung tatay ni Awra’
"Galit ba si Vice kay Awra?" That was the question posed to Ogie Diaz in a recent episode of the showbiz writer-vlogger's YouTube show -- whether superstar Vice Ganda, who had served as "elder sister" to Awra Briguela, was mad over the latter's involvement in a brawl in a Makati pub that led to Briguela being hauled off to jail and slapped with charges. Vice had jokingly described a rowdy moment in his show "It's Showtime" as "pang-Poblacion", and viewers interpreted that as a subtle show of disapproval by Vice toward his wayward "anak-anakan". Ogie, a good friend of Vice, only said: "Alam ni Vice na mali si Awra." The more juicy revelation had to do with Awra's whereabouts. If true, Vice has a justifiably bigger reason to be mad at Awra than the young star's involvement in a bar fracas, which, per Ogie -- citing a source of his -- even led to the young star losing a project already in the bag. "Ang nakakaloka, June 30 naganap 'yung insidente sa Pobla, July 1 dapat kasama sa launch si Awra sa isang show," he said. But Awra ended up in jail and with huge controversy around her neck, so she was dropped from the project. "Big lesson" for Awra, added Ogie. He also revealed that Awra, his father and Vice are set to have a meeting to sort things out. “So magmi-meeting daw sina Vice, Awra at ‘yung tatay. Sana maayos. Sana ‘yung nangyari, e, magsilbing aral at sana iwasan ni Awra ang sobrang barkada, sobrang inom.” The post ‘Na-shock yung tatay ni Awra’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
